Giants hire Joe Schoen as GM: Here’s how Twitter reacted

Here’s a look at how Twitter reacted following the announcement that the New York Giants have hired Joe Schoen as their new general manager.

The New York Giants brought to a close their general manager search on Friday, officially announcing the hire of Joe Schoen.

“We are pleased and proud to name Joe as our general manager,” said Giants president John Mara. “Throughout our search, Joe impressed us with his ability to communicate a progressive and comprehensive vision for our team. His philosophy and collaborative approach to building a roster and coaching staff align with what we were looking for in a general manager.”

“Joe is the kind of exceptional leader we sought to oversee our football operations,” said chairman Steve Tisch. “We will do whatever it takes to support Joe’s vision and strategic plan for success. We are excited to begin this next chapter with Joe as our general manager.”

Here’s a look at how Twitter reacted to the news:

Giants hire Bears GM candidate Joe Schoen as general manager

One Bears GM candidate is off the market as the Giants have hired Joe Schoen as their new GM.

The Chicago Bears are in the middle of their search for a new general manager and head coach, but one team already has a step on them.

The New York Giants, one of three other teams looking for a new GM and head coach, have hired Joe Schoen as their new GM. Schoen interviewed with the Bears for their GM vacancy last Sunday. Five days later, he’s now with the Giants.

Schoen was considered to be a top GM candidate this cycle. He served as GM Brandon Beane’s assistant in Buffalo, and he’s developed plenty of experience on the scouting and personnel side of things.

While there are still plenty of GM candidates in the mix for Chicago, the bigger concern is the head coaching pool, which isn’t as deep as GM.

With Schoen now in place at GM, the Giants are set to begin their search for a new head coach, where they’re set to interview Brian Daboll, Brian Flores, Leslie Frazier and Dan Quinn among others. All four of those candidates have interviewed or are set to interview with the Bears.

While the Bears are doing their due diligence in casting a wide net of candidates for GM, you have to wonder if they’re actually helping their case or hurting it. Especially as two other teams, the Vikings and Raiders, also have GMs to hire.

Chicago’s GM interviews are expected to stretch into next week, where guys like Morocco Brown, Rick Smith, Omar Khan and Ryan Poles are still on the docket.

Giants set to hire Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen to replace Dave Gettleman

#NFCEast news: #Giants set to hire #Buffalo #Bills executive Joe #Schoen as the new GM

The Giants appear set to name a new general manager and the organization could be set for an AFC East-style shift in philosophy after Joe Schoen beat out two other candidates.

Schoen’s journey isn’t your typical route to the NFL, as the 42-year-old landed his first job as a ticket office intern with the Panthers in 2000.

After holding various jobs around the NFL, including stops as a player personnel guy with the Dolphins before joining the Bills front office in 2017.

After learning on the job next to Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane, he’ll lead another Giants coaching change and his hiring could see former Dolphins coach Brian Flores return home to New York City as a head coach.

Giants plan to hire Bills’ Joe Schoen as general manager

Report: #Giants plan to hire #Bills’ Joe Schoen as general manager:

The Buffalo Bills likely have a vacancy within their organization. It’s near the top.

According to multiple reports on Friday, the New York Giants plan to hire Joe Schoen as their new general manager:

The news on Schoen’s hiring comes only days after the Giants announced that he had a second interview with the team for the job.

With Schoen heading to New York, now the spotlight shines on Buffalo’s assistant coaches. Both defensive and offensive coordinator, Leslie Frazier and Brian Daboll respectively, have had interviews with other teams this offseason regarding coaching vacancies.

Between those two it’s Daboll that’s more closely connected to the Giants’ vacancies.

Just earlier on Friday, a report stated that GM candidates were specifically being asked for their thoughts on Daboll as a head coach. Such a suggestion makes sound as if the Giants have a large interest in the Bills OC.

On Schoen, he came to the Bills via the Miami Dolphins where he was their player personnel director. Beane made Schoen his first hire when he was appointed to his position in 2017.

Giants to hire Joe Schoen as next general manager

The New York Giants will hire Buffalo Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen as their next general manager.

The two-week search that included nine original candidates and 12 total interviews has come to an end. And the New York Giants have decided to hire Joe Schoen as their next general manager.

Ian Rapoport was the first to report the news.

Schoen was the favorite going into the GM search and it comes as little surprise that he was both a finalist and the ultimate choice for New York.

The 42-year-old Schoen has been Brandon Beane’s right hand man for the Buffalo Bills since 2017, serving as their assistant general manager. In total, he has more than 20 years of scouting and executive experience.

Prior to joining the Bills, Schoen broke into the NFL as a ticket office intern with the Carolina Panthers in 2000. He then got bumped up to scouting assistant and was later promoted to southeast and southwest scout.

Schoen also spent five years as the Miami Dolphins’ national scout before being promoted to assistant director of college scouting. He then spent four years serving as their director of player personnel.

Born in Elkhart, Indiana, Schoen graduated from DePauw University with a communications degree in 2001. He played quarterback and wide receiver throughout his college career, and was even named a team captain during his senior season.

Schoen takes over for Dave Gettleman, who “retired” at the conclusion of the 2021 regular season.

Giants complete second GM interview with Ryan Poles

The New York Giants met in-person with Ryan Poles on Wednesday, bringing to a close their second interview with the Chiefs executive.

The New York Giants announced on Wednesday that a second interview with Kansas City Chiefs executive director of player personnel Ryan Poles has been concluded.

Like Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen before him, Poles met with the Giants in person this time around. Previously, he was among nine who interviewed for the vacant GM job virtually.

As part of his second interview, Poles met face-to-face with team co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch, vice president of player evaluation Chris Mara, who has “no authority,” and several other members of the organization.

Poles is currently in his 12th season with the Chiefs and first as executive director of player personnel.

Prior to 2021, Poles served as a scouting assistant (2009-2012), college scouting coordinator (2010-2016), director of college scouting (2016-2018) and assistant director of player personnel (2018-2020).

A native New Yorker who was born in Canandaigua, Poles graduated from Boston College in 2007 with a degree in communications.

San Francisco 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters will meet with the Giants in East Rutherford on Thursday.

CBS Sports predicts Brian Flores will be Giants’ next head coach

CBS Sports predicts that the New York Giants will hire Brian Flores as their next head coach.

The New York Giants are currently interviewing finalists for their general manager position and that search should wrap up in the coming days. Once it does, the team will shift their attention to the available head coaches.

There are plenty of options out there at the moment, including several men that are either reportedly interested in the job or that the Giants are reportedly interested in.

With as many as eight teams looking for a new head coach, it’s tough to guess who will land where. But Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports tried to make those predictions anyway.

In an article designed to match team with new head coach, Kerr has the Giants ultimately hiring Brian Flores.

New York Giants: Brian Flores (former Dolphins HC)

Flores is arguably the biggest name on the market and Giants owner John Mara reportedly has “great respect” for the former Dolphins coach. The Giants have yet to interview Flores (they’re still searching for a general manager), but New York needs a significant culture change in the locker room.

Flores had his issues in Miami, from coaching changes to his handling of Tua Tagovailoa — but he is the only head coach to start a season 1-7 and finish with a winning record (2021). The Dolphins went 24-25 in his three seasons, with two winning campaigns. Flores went 24-18 in his final 42 games as a head coach.

Hiring another Belichick assistant may not be ideal for the Giants, but Flores seems cut from a different cloth than the others. The Giants need to rebuild the culture in order to build a winner. Players respect Flores and will appreciate his leadership.

While Flores makes sense as an option, the Giants appear to be trending toward Joe Schoen as their next general manager. That’s significant because most seem to believe that if Schoen is hired, Brian Daboll is likely to come with him as head coach.

In the event Schoen is somehow passed over or takes another GM job, that opens the door to Ryan Poles and potentially Joe Hortiz. In that scenario, Flores becomes a more likely hire — although not necessarily a sure thing.

The situation remains fluid and very much up in the air. It’s going to be an interesting few days/weeks for the Giants.

Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen had a second interview with the New York Giants regarding their vacant general manager job on Tuesday.

Schoen chatting with New York again comes as unsurprising news. He was their first interviewee after former GM Dave Gettleman stepped down from the job last week.

The second interview was reported by the New York Post.

A follow up from Monday called Schoen one of the “strongest candidates” for the position.

Last offseason, Schoen was a candidate for the Carolina Panthers then-vacant general manager post but he was not hired in the end.

Schoen came to the Bills via the Miami Dolphins where he was their player personnel director.  Bills general manager Brandon Beane made Schoen his first hire when he was appointed to his position in 2017.

In addition to the vacancy in New York, Schoen has been connected to the vacant GM job with the Chicago Bears.

Stay tuned to Bills Wire throughout the winter as we will provide all updates regarding Buffalo assistants and front-office members that are connected to other NFL teams.

Giants kick off in-person GM interviews with Joe Schoen

The New York Giants began the second round of their general manager search by meeting with Joe Schoen face-to-face.

The New York Giants are putting their search for a new general manager into overdrive.

They interviewed nine candidates last week and are now into the second round of the process. On Tuesday, they brought back Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen for a second interview.

Schoen has been considered a top candidate from the very beginning. The Giants are very interested and could be angling for Schoen as he could likely bring in Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll along as head coach.

Daboll has worked wonders with quarterback Josh Allen in Buffalo and could do the same for Daniel Jones here with the Giants.

As for any other candidates invited back for a second interview, the Giants have yet to announce that information. The vibe is they want to get this done quickly without rushing through it. Perhaps they will make a decision this week.
