Report: Giants’ Joe Schoen believes Daniel Jones can be his QB

The New York Giants will add competition at the QB position this offseason, but GM Joe Schoen is reportedly a believer in Daniel Jones.

Who will start under center for the New York Giants in 2022? Will newly hired general manager Joe Schoen wipe the slate clean and move on from quarterback Daniel Jones?

Apparently, the answer to that is “no.”

During a recent appearance on the Blue Rush podcast with Lawrence Tynes, Paul Schwartz of the New York Post reported that Schoen believes in Jones and that the 24-year-old will remain in East Rutherford next season.

“I was told that Joe Schoen believes that Daniel Jones can be his quarterback. He didn’t go into (the GM interview) and say, ‘number one, Daniel Jones it out. We’re drafting a quarterback or we’re signing one.’

“What I was told is there was talk about the offensive line being really bad and about all the injuries to his skill players that compromised what Daniel Jones can do more than Joe Schoen saying, ‘I don’t like your quarterback at all.'”

Does that mean Jones is a lock to have his fifth-year option picked up? No. That almost certainly will not happen. And nothing will be handed to Jones, either.

“The position will still be upgraded. They will increase the competition,” Schwartz added. “Look, am I saying that because (Schoen) thinks he can work with Daniel Jones that they will not draft a quarterback over the first couple days of the draft? I am not saying that. A rising tide raises all ships, right?”

Schwartz also believes that based on the information he’s gathered, Jones will be QB1 in 2022. However, there will be a new QB2 — one specifically added to push Jones for the starting spot.

That’s a notion Schwartz doubled down on in a recent article for The Post.

“What do you think of Daniel Jones?’’ was one of the very first questions the owners asked of the GM candidates. It is believed that Schoen said he can make it work with Jones, that Jones was hurt by a bad offensive line and too many injuries to his skill players.

Expect Jones, if his sprained neck is fully healed, to be the No. 1 quarterback in 2022. That does not mean the Giants will ignore the position. Schoen will upgrade the competition around Jones, but do not dismiss the possibility of taking a quarterback in the first three rounds of the NFL draft. Schoen, in his first year with Buffalo, watched Tyrod Taylor help the Bills end a 17-year playoff drought, but that didn’t stop the team from taking Josh Allen with its first pick in the 2018 draft.

With limited options in free agency and a less-than-stellar group of prospects in the 2022 NFL draft, Jones always seemed destined to return as QB1. If there had been more meat on the bone for the Giants to pick from this offseason, perhaps things would be different. Instead, Jones may have lucked out and earned another chance.

Report: Giants to interview Bills’ Brian Daboll, Leslie Frazier on Saturday

The New York Giants are expected to interview Bills OC Brian Daboll and DC Leslie Frazier on Saturday.

After announcing the hiring of Joe Schoen as the new general manager, the New York Giants are expected to interview Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier on Saturday, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

With Schoen now leading the search for a new head coach, it was expected that he would be bringing in his former colleagues for head coach interviews.

As of Friday evening, the Giants are expected to interview both candidates before their AFC divisional-round matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. What makes it a bit easier is the fact that Schoen can conduct the interviews in Buffalo.

Daboll is expected to be one of the favorites to take over for Joe Judge, who was fired following the regular season. His offenses have been one of the best in the NFL over the last two seasons, ranking first and second in points per game during that span, respectively.

Frazier has proven to be a strong candidate in his own right after leading the Bills defense for the last five seasons. He has also served as the assistant head coach to Sean McDermott.

The Giants are also expected to interview Dan Quinn and Brian Flores for the head coach vacancy, but the Bills duo will kick off the interviews on Saturday.

Report: Giants’ John Mara personally reached out to Brian Flores

New York Giants CEO John Mara called Brian Flores days ago and reportedly told him that the team is willing to eat dead cap to clear space.

The New York Giants have hired Joe Schoen as their next general manager, which means the search for a new head coach can commence.

Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn has already been requested for an interview, but he will not be alone. The Giants are also expected to request interviews with former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores and Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll.

There will likely be others.

What’s interesting however, is that Giants co-owner John Mara reportedly reached out to Flores prior to the hiring of Schoen. Additionally, Mara is telling coaching candidates that the team is willing to eat a boatload of dead cap in order to clear some space for 2022.

This approach is interesting because Mara and fellow co-owner, Steve Tisch, previously stated the new GM would “oversee all aspects of our football operations, including player personnel, college scouting and coaching.”

That already appears to be an untruth with the request to interview Quinn and the private phone call to Flores. It also flies in the face of Schoen’s first remarks as Giants GM, in which he claimed the head coaching search would be wide-ranging.

“Now, the work begins. My immediate focus is to hire a head coach, with who I will work in lockstep with to create a collaborative environment for our football operations. We will cast a wide net, it can be former head coaches, first-time head coaches but, more importantly, it has to be a person who possesses the ability to lead an organization and the ability to motivate and develop players,” Schoen said.

Mara promised to stay out of the way but he can’t seem to help himself. Hopefully for the Giants’ sake, he was just trying to get some ducks in a row so Schoen could hit the ground running without a leash.

Giants hire Joe Schoen as general manager

The New York Giants have hired Joe Schoen as their next general manager. What might that mean for their head coach search?

The first big hire of the off-season personnel cycle has been made, as the New York Giants announced that they have hired Joe Schoen as their next general manager.

Schoen has an extensive background on the personnel side and over two decades of scouting and personnel experience in the NFL. He began in 2008 with the Miami Dolphins, spending five years as one of the team’s national scouts. He then became the Dolphins assistant director of college scouting in 2013, a role he served in for a brief time before his promotion to director of player personnel in 2014.

Schoen served the Dolphins in that capacity until he joined the Buffalo Bills in 2017 as their assistant general manager.

The team announced the hire on social media:

With the general manager in place, the attention in the Big Apple now turns to the head coaching position. Given Schoen’s time in Buffalo, one might expect that current Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll would be atop the list. Given the need to either develop Daniel Jones — or develop a rookie quarterback should Schoen look to move on from Jones — Daboll’s track record with Josh Allen would be an enticing line on his resume.

Of course, Daboll is not the only Bills coordinator who is in line for a head coaching job this cycle, as Buffalo defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier has also met with teams. Could Schoen look to the defensive side of the ball to replace Joe Judge?

Giants new GM Joe Schoen faces tall task ushering in new era

New York Giants new GM Joe Schoen faces a tall task as he ushers in a new era.

The New York Giants are finalizing a deal to make Joe Schoen (pronounced SHANE for those wondering) their new general manager.

That leads to the next question: What can Schoen do to turn this listing Giants’ ship around?

First off, Schoen, if empowered, must take this dusty rug of an organization out into the backyard and beat it until all of the dust is gone. If John Mara doesn’t allow him to make the vital institutional changes in the scouting, medical, conditioning and personnel ranks this hire will have all for naught.

“We are looking for a person who demonstrates exceptional leadership and communication abilities,’’ CEO John Mara said recently. “Somebody who will oversee all aspects of our football operations, including player personnel, college scouting and coaching.’’

If he does get empowered, Schoen can lead the Giants back to prominence through proper scouting and drafting and not overpaying for players. The other part of that equation is keeping those player healthy and on the field.

Schoen could very likely hire an offensive mind who can develop fourth-year quarterback Daniel Jones. One coaching candidate is a natural fit – Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll who turned Josh Allen from a raw rookie into one of the NFL’s most dynamic players. Many believe Jones possesses some similar characteristics that Allen has.

It will be interesting to see what Schoen thinks of Jones. After all, having the right quarterback is the key to success in this league. He must have told the Maras and Steve Tisch that he can likely salvage and/or develop Jones as the Giants appear to still be tethered to him.

“Throughout our search, Joe impressed us with his ability to communicate a progressive and comprehensive vision for our team. His philosophy and collaborative approach to building a roster and coaching staff align with what we were looking for in a general manager,’ Mara said in a statement on Friday.

“Joe is the kind of exceptional leader we sought to oversee our football operations,” said chairman Steve Tisch. “We will do whatever it takes to support Joe’s vision and strategic plan for success. We are excited to begin this next chapter with Joe as our general manager.”

A new era is about to begin in East Rutherford. If Schoen is sold on Jones, he can begin to rectify the many mistakes his predecessor, Dave Gettleman, made. The salary cap must be addressed. The medical and conditioning staff has to come up with answers to why they lead the league in injuries almost every year and the team must be built the right way – from the inside out, not from the outside in. They must get bigger and meaner in the trenches.

Schoen is likely to know all of this already. The Giants’ mistakes under Gettleman and Jerry Reese are well known across the league. That is why the job was so sought after. The problem are well known and the solutions may be easier than we think if the owners allow Schoen to do the job properly.

Giants hire Joe Schoen as GM: Here’s how Twitter reacted

Here’s a look at how Twitter reacted following the announcement that the New York Giants have hired Joe Schoen as their new general manager.

The New York Giants brought to a close their general manager search on Friday, officially announcing the hire of Joe Schoen.

“We are pleased and proud to name Joe as our general manager,” said Giants president John Mara. “Throughout our search, Joe impressed us with his ability to communicate a progressive and comprehensive vision for our team. His philosophy and collaborative approach to building a roster and coaching staff align with what we were looking for in a general manager.”

“Joe is the kind of exceptional leader we sought to oversee our football operations,” said chairman Steve Tisch. “We will do whatever it takes to support Joe’s vision and strategic plan for success. We are excited to begin this next chapter with Joe as our general manager.”

Here’s a look at how Twitter reacted to the news:

Giants hire Bears GM candidate Joe Schoen as general manager

One Bears GM candidate is off the market as the Giants have hired Joe Schoen as their new GM.

The Chicago Bears are in the middle of their search for a new general manager and head coach, but one team already has a step on them.

The New York Giants, one of three other teams looking for a new GM and head coach, have hired Joe Schoen as their new GM. Schoen interviewed with the Bears for their GM vacancy last Sunday. Five days later, he’s now with the Giants.

Schoen was considered to be a top GM candidate this cycle. He served as GM Brandon Beane’s assistant in Buffalo, and he’s developed plenty of experience on the scouting and personnel side of things.

While there are still plenty of GM candidates in the mix for Chicago, the bigger concern is the head coaching pool, which isn’t as deep as GM.

With Schoen now in place at GM, the Giants are set to begin their search for a new head coach, where they’re set to interview Brian Daboll, Brian Flores, Leslie Frazier and Dan Quinn among others. All four of those candidates have interviewed or are set to interview with the Bears.

While the Bears are doing their due diligence in casting a wide net of candidates for GM, you have to wonder if they’re actually helping their case or hurting it. Especially as two other teams, the Vikings and Raiders, also have GMs to hire.

Chicago’s GM interviews are expected to stretch into next week, where guys like Morocco Brown, Rick Smith, Omar Khan and Ryan Poles are still on the docket.

Giants set to hire Bills assistant GM Joe Schoen to replace Dave Gettleman

#NFCEast news: #Giants set to hire #Buffalo #Bills executive Joe #Schoen as the new GM

The Giants appear set to name a new general manager and the organization could be set for an AFC East-style shift in philosophy after Joe Schoen beat out two other candidates.

Schoen’s journey isn’t your typical route to the NFL, as the 42-year-old landed his first job as a ticket office intern with the Panthers in 2000.

After holding various jobs around the NFL, including stops as a player personnel guy with the Dolphins before joining the Bills front office in 2017.

After learning on the job next to Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane, he’ll lead another Giants coaching change and his hiring could see former Dolphins coach Brian Flores return home to New York City as a head coach.

Giants plan to hire Bills’ Joe Schoen as general manager

Report: #Giants plan to hire #Bills’ Joe Schoen as general manager:

The Buffalo Bills likely have a vacancy within their organization. It’s near the top.

According to multiple reports on Friday, the New York Giants plan to hire Joe Schoen as their new general manager:

The news on Schoen’s hiring comes only days after the Giants announced that he had a second interview with the team for the job.

With Schoen heading to New York, now the spotlight shines on Buffalo’s assistant coaches. Both defensive and offensive coordinator, Leslie Frazier and Brian Daboll respectively, have had interviews with other teams this offseason regarding coaching vacancies.

Between those two it’s Daboll that’s more closely connected to the Giants’ vacancies.

Just earlier on Friday, a report stated that GM candidates were specifically being asked for their thoughts on Daboll as a head coach. Such a suggestion makes sound as if the Giants have a large interest in the Bills OC.

On Schoen, he came to the Bills via the Miami Dolphins where he was their player personnel director. Beane made Schoen his first hire when he was appointed to his position in 2017.

Stay tuned to Bills Wire throughout the winter as we will provide all updates regarding Buffalo assistants and front-office members that are connected to other NFL teams.
