[autotag]Joe Giannetti[/autotag] only got one chance to showcase his skills inside the UFC cage and is hell-bent on making it back for another.

Saturday, Giannetti (16-5-1) notched a highlight-reel finish for the second straight fight when he put opponent [autotag]Jacob Bohn[/autotag] (14-12) to sleep in 27 seconds with a suffocating ninja choke.

The fight co-headlined Cage Titans 65 in Plymouth, Mass., and was for the promotion’s lightweight title. Giannetti achieved champ-champ status; he won the promotion’s welterweight title with a jumping head kick of Pat Casey in November.

Giannetti, 28, is 10-4-1 since his UFC departure in late 2018. His lone UFC bout was the “The Ultimate Fighter 27” lightweight finale, which he lost to Mike Trizano by split decision.

Since then, Giannetti repeatedly has called for a second opportunity. Although he was rudely welcomed back to the regional scene with a 3-3-1 stretch in his first seven fights post-UFC, Giannetti has gone 7-1 with six finishes since. His lone loss came against current PFL lightweight Michael Dufort.

Former UFC fighter Joe Giannetti is known for his signature guillotine choke, but he looked like “The Karate Kid” at Cage Titans 62.

In his continued effort to make it back to the big show, UFC alum [autotag]Joe Giannetti[/autotag] added another highlight finish to his reel.

Giannetti (15-5-1), who was the lightweight runner-up on “The Ultimate Fighter 27,” took a short-notice fight Saturday at Cage Titans 62 in Plymouth, Mass. Up a weight class at welterweight, the risk paid off as Giannetti flattened opponent [autotag]Pat Casey[/autotag] (10-8) with a jumping karate-style switch kick to the face. A couple hammerfists later, the fight was over at 2:12 of Round 2.

After the win, Giannetti campaigned to the UFC brass to give him another opportunity in the promotion. Giannetti competed once inside the UFC cage during the “TUF 27” lightweight final bout in July 2018. He lost a split decision to Mike Trizano.

Giannetti was let go by the promotion following the defeat. Since then, Giannetti has gone 9-4-1 with eight finishes for Cage Titans and LFA.

16 former UFC fighters who could return to the promotion in 2023

It’s hard to make it to the UFC once, let alone a second time, but these fighters have a chance in 2023.

It’s hard to make it to the UFC.

Thousands of professional fighters try every year – and most fail. For a small percentage, however, they sign their names on the dotted line to fight for the biggest MMA promotion in the world.

Sometimes the opportunity comes a bit too soon. Other times, they’re faced with difficult matchups that time proves were bigger challenges than originally anticipated.

When the pink slip comes and a fighter departs the promotion, there is often a phrase they hear on the way out: “Go get a few more wins, and the UFC will consider bringing you back.”

Easier said than done.

For the vast majority, they won’t be back. However, it’s not impossible. A number of fighters have done it over the years. Just look at UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno. He was released from the promotion, built his way back, became a contender, and then won a UFC title.

In recent memory, others like Brandon Davis, Jesse Ronson, Nicolas Dalby, Chase Sherman, Sean Soriano, and Dustin Jacoby have reinforced the possibility.

With the new year upon us, here are 16 former UFC fighters who could return to the promotion in 2023.

Note: Fighters considered for this list had to have competed in at least one UFC bout.
