Broncos reached out to Houston’s XFL team about QB P.J. Walker

The Denver Broncos reached out to the Houston Roughnecks to inquire about star XFL quarterback P.J. Walker.

The Denver Broncos reached out to the Houston Roughnecks to inquire about star XFL quarterback P.J. Walker, according to ESPN’s Stefano Fusaro. The Broncos are likely doing their due diligence on Walker as a potential backup quarterback candidate.

Walker (6-0, 207 pounds) led the XFL in passing yards (1,338) and passing touchdowns (15) this spring. He led the Roughnecks to a 5-0 record before the league closed down due to coronavirus concerns.

After breaking nearly all of Temple’s major passing records in college, Walker signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2017. He spent two seasons on Indianapolis’ practice squad before entering the XFL’s draft last October.

The NFL has not yet given teams permission to sign XFL players because those players are still under contract with the upstart league. Once the NFL grants permission, Walker will likely be one a coveted target.

Denver waived Joe Flacco on Thursday and the team plans to start Drew Lock this season with Jeff Driskel serving as his backup. Walker might be a candidate to either serve as the No. 3 QB or compete with Driskel for backup duties.

Last year, Broncos general manager John Elway signed two standouts from the Alliance of American Football: cornerback De’Vante Bausby and nose tackle Mike Purcell. Denver plans to bring back both players in 2020.

Bausby was given a one-year contract and Purcell received a second-round tender. Other teams will be allowed to negotiate with Purcell but the Broncos will have the option to match any offer he receives. If a team makes him an offer that Denver doesn’t match, that team would have to give up a second-round pick for Purcell.

The Broncos’ willingness to give opportunities to a pair of AAF players might be a sign that the team would be willing to do the same with an XFL player. Walker is an intriguing QB for fans to keep an eye on.

Broncos have more cap space after cutting QB Joe Flacco

After waiving quarterback Joe Flacco, the Broncos still have some salary cap space available to make a few more moves.

The Denver Broncos have informed quarterback Joe Flacco that he will be waived with a failed physical designation. After making the move official, Broncos general manager John Elway will have more salary cap space available.

Denver will eat $13.6 million in “dead money” — money that was already paid to Flacco that will count against the team’s cap this year, according to Spotrac.com. Because the QB’s $20.25 million salary will no longer be accounted for though, the Broncos will have a net savings of $10.05 million in cap space.

That brings the team’s total salary cap space available to $33,456,437, according to Spotrac, not including Graham Glasgow’s cap hit.

That total of more than $33.4 million does account for QB Jeff Driskel ($1.75 million), cornerback A.J. Bouye (over $13.4 million) and defensive lineman Jurrell Casey (close to $11.8 million).

That estimate does not include Glasgow’s cap charge because the details of the offensive lineman’s contract are not yet known. Glasgow will earn an average of $11 million per season but that doesn’t necessarily mean he will have a salary cap hit of $11 million in 2019.

For the sake of simplicity, though, we can subtract $11 million from Spotrac’s estimate and calculate that the Broncos have over $22.45 million in remaining cap space. Elway’s probably not done making moves yet. We are tracking all of Denver’s free agency transactions here.

Former Ravens QB Joe Flacco being released by Broncos

A year after trading a fourth-round pick for him, the Denver Broncos are waiving former Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco.

[jwplayer 1Of71mAD-ThvAeFxT]

Former Baltimore Ravens quarterback and Super Bowl XLVII MVP Joe Flacco will hit the free-agent market for the first time in his 12-year career. A year after trading Baltimore a fourth-round pick for him, the Denver Broncos are set to waive Flacco, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The move was expected this offseason thanks to his cap hit and Drew Lock supplanting him last season. Flacco was set to earn $23.65 million against Denver’s salary cap for the 2020 season and once cut the Broncos will free up $10.05 million.

It’s been a tough road for Flacco following the Ravens trading him last season. He only played in eight games for Denver before a neck injury forced him out and eventually to injured reserve. Flacco completed 65.3% of his 262 pass attempts for 1,822 yards, six touchdown passes and five interceptions.

At this point in Flacco’s career, he likely won’t be viewed as a starting option any longer. However, if he wants to continue playing, Flacco could draw some interest as a backup with starting experience.

Broncos waive QB Joe Flacco with a failed physical designation

The Broncos have waived quarterback Joe Flacco with a failed physical designation.

The Denver Broncos have waived veteran quarterback Joe Flacco with a failed physical designation, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Flacco had two years remaining on his contract so Denver will have to eat $13.6 million in “dead money” to move on from him, according to Spotrac.com. Flacco was scheduled to have a base salary of $20.25 million so the Broncos will have a net salary cap savings of $10.05 million in 2020 after cutting him.

Flacco entered the league as a first-round pick out of Delaware with the Baltimore Ravens in 2008. He spent the first 11 years of his career in Baltimore and won a Super Bowl before being traded to the Broncos last year.

Flacco was underwhelming in Denver, completing 65.3 percent of his passes for 1,822 yards with six touchdowns against five interceptions. He was sacked 26 times and lost three fumbles in eight games.

In his career, Flacco has thrown for 40,067 yards with 218 touchdown passes against 141 interceptions. He has also rushed for 831 yards and 16 scores. The Broncos plan to start Drew Lock this season. Jeff Driskel, who agreed to terms with Denver earlier this week, will serve as Lock’s backup.

Report: Broncos had interest in AJ McCarron before he signed with Texans

Before agreeing to terms with Jeff Driskel, the Broncos were interested in Texans backup AJ McCarron.

Before the Denver Broncos agreed to terms with quarterback Jeff Driskel on a two-year deal, the team had interest in Houston Texans backup AJ McCarron, according to a report from KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

McCarron ultimately decided to re-sign with Houston with a one-year, $4 million contract and Denver turned its attention toward Driskel.

McCarron (6-3, 215 pounds) entered the league as a fifth-round pick out of Alabama with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2014. After spending the first four years of his career in Cincinnati, McCarron went on to spend time with the Buffalo Bills and Oakland (now Las Vegas) Raiders before joining the Texans last year. He has started in four games in his career.

The Broncos were rumored to be interested in McCarron back in 2017 but general manager John Elway denied that interest at the time. There’s no denying that Denver had genuine interest this time around but the two sides weren’t able to get a deal done.

After landing Driskel, the Broncos are expected to trade or release quarterback Joe Flacco later this week.

NFL sets 2020 salary cap, providing clarity on Broncos’ financial situation

After the NFL announced the salary cap total for the 2020 season, the Broncos now know how much they can spend this year.

The NFL announced Sunday that the league will have a salary cap of $198.2 million for each team in 2020. NFL teams that did not use all of their salary cap space in 2019 are allowed to roll over their unused cap, so some teams could have salary caps well over $200 million this fall.

The Denver Broncos are projected to have a salary cap worth around $210,882,781, according to Spotrac.com. After subtracting the team’s active contracts ($177,952,779), Spotrac estimates that the team has a little more than $38.8 million in remaining salary cap space.

That number accounts for safety Justin Simmons playing on a one-year franchise tag and it also includes the contract of cornerback A.J. Bouye, who will be officially traded to the Broncos on Wednesday.

If Denver moves on from quarterback Joe Flacco as expected, the Broncos’ cap number could increase by a little more than $10 million. Flacco has to recover from his neck injury before Denver can release him.

Broncos general manager John Elway can begin negotiating with NFL free agents beginning at 12:00 p.m. MT on Monday, March 16.

Joe Flacco’s little brother, Tom, chasing NFL dream

Tom Flacco, the younger brother of Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco, hasn’t given up on his dream of reaching the NFL.

Tom Flacco, the younger brother of Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco, is hoping to get a shot in the NFL this spring.

A two-year starter at Towson, Flacco was not invited to the combine and he’s unlikely to be selected in April’s draft. That hasn’t discouraged his dream of going pro.

“I am focused on one thing and one thing only, that’s making it in the NFL,” Flacco said in an interview with The Baltimore Sun‘s Mike Preston. “People might think I am crazy, but I’ve spoken with a lot of successful people and they are said they were driven to one thing, and that was their focus. That’s me. I am committed to football.”

Flacco totaled 6,082 passing yards and 50 touchdowns against 17 interceptions during his time with the Tigers.

Perhaps due in part to his last name, Flacco should get an invitation to some team’s rookie minicamp this spring. That invitation seems unlikely to come from the Broncos.

Drew Lock will be Denver’s starter in 2020 and general manager John Elway has said he would like to add a veteran to serve as the team’s backup. That would presumably leave Brandon Allen and Brett Rypien to compete for QB3 duties.

The Broncos have brought a “camp arm” to training camps in the past but it’s hard to imagine the team carrying five QBs, even in the offseason. If Allen is brought back, Denver would be unlikely to sign a QB like Flacco.
