Former Ohio State QB C.J. Stroud said some Buckeyes fans sent him critiques on Venmo

VENMO?!

Former Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud detailed the absolutely bizarre way some Buckeye fans got his virtual attention as he avoided social media this past football season.

While talking with sports personality Jim Rome, the probable first-round draft pick shed light on how he dealt with outside noise while leading one of the best college football programs in the country.

As one could guess, the starting quarterback of a major college football team could get plenty of frustration thrown their way when things aren’t going well.

It got to the point that fans were somehow sending direct messages into Stroud’s Venmo account.

“I was getting DMs on Venmo, the money app,” Stroud recalled to Rome in the interview. “Fans [were] telling me, ‘play better,’ things like that. … At the end of the day, it comes with the territory.”

It’s a startling admission from Stroud as how the age of app communication has made just about anyone reachable in some way, shape or form. However, sliding into a college quarterback’s DMs on any social media account, much less Venmo, just feels just beyond the pale for any reason.

Stroud will undoubtedly face plenty of pushback as he embarks on his professional football career, but let’s hope the fans of his future NFL team will leave him alone on the apps where he’s not expecting them.

Dabo Swinney loves the way Trevor Lawrence looks in his second NFL season.

Clemson’s head coach joined “The Jim Rome Show” this week and was asked if he has had much time to keep tabs on Lawrence this season – and if so, how the former Tiger and current Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback looks in new Jags head coach Doug Pederson’s system.

“He looks great,” Swinney said. “I know he had some ball security problems this past week with some fumbles and stuff. But he looks so, so much better. He looks great. He really does. I’m proud of him. I keep up with him.”

After just one turnover in the first three games, Lawrence had five in the Jaguars’ 29-21 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in rainy Philly last Sunday, including four lost fumbles. But overall, the 2021 No. 1 overall draft pick is off to a solid start in his Year 2 in the league.

After completing 59.6 percent of his passes for 3,641 yards and 12 touchdowns with 17 interceptions as a rookie in 2021, Lawrence has improved statistically through the first four games of the 2022 season, completing 65.7 percent of his passes for 946 yards and eight touchdowns with just two picks.

Coming off an NFL-worst 3-14 season in 2021, Lawrence has helped the Jaguars to a 2-2 record so far while teaming up with Pederson, the former NFL quarterback and Super Bowl-winning head coach with the Philadelphia Eagles who was hired as the Jaguars’ head coach this past February.

“They look much better as a team, and I know they had a tough one this week,” Swinney said. “But I think they’ve got a chance to have a much, much better season and something that they can really build off of throughout the year and onward.”

“But I really like Doug,” Swinney continued. “His son actually goes to Clemson, and we’ve spent a good bit of time together over the past several years, and just a guy I really like and respect. He’s a great quarterback guy, and I think he’s been excellent for Trevor.”

Lawrence, Pederson and the Jaguars will return to action on Sunday against the Houston Texans at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville.

Swinney on ‘the year of the quarterback’ in the ACC

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney joined “The Jim Rome Show” this week and was asked about the overall talent and depth in the ACC, which currently has four teams ranked in the top 25 – all from the Atlantic Division (Clemson, No. 5 AP Top 25, No. 5 …

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney joined “The Jim Rome Show” this week and was asked about the overall talent and depth in the ACC, which currently has four teams ranked in the top 25 — all from the Atlantic Division (Clemson, No. 5 AP Top 25, No. 5 Coaches Poll; NC State, No. 14 AP, No. 14 Coaches Poll; Wake Forest, No. 15 AP, No. 15 Coaches Poll; Syracuse, No. 22 AP, No. 21 Coaches Poll).

“It’s strong. It really is, especially the Atlantic,” Swinney said. “It’s the year of the quarterback. There’s a bunch of quarterbacks in the ACC this year that you’re gonna see playing on Sunday – a bunch of them – and it seems like we play one every week. There’s just a lot of guys, man, and I think a very competitive group. So, a lot of talent, a lot of guys I think will be drafted out of the ACC this year.”

Swinney’s Tigers have already beaten a couple of the ACC’s best quarterbacks in Wake Forest’s Sam Hartman and NC State’s Devin Leary, but Swinney pointed out that Clemson still has to face other top signal-callers in the conference such as Boston College’s Phil Jurkovec, Florida State’s Jordan Travis, Syracuse’s Garrett Shrader and Louisville’s Malik Cunningham.

“Wake Forest is a team that doesn’t get a lot of credit. I mean, they got a bunch of fifth- and sixth-year seniors, and NC State, that bunch we just played, same thing – a bunch of really good veteran guys on both sides,” Swinney said.

“That quarterback, Leary, is a great player. We’re getting ready to play Jurkovec. He’s a great player. We’ve got to go down to Florida State and play their quarterback. Louisville’s got a great quarterback. Syracuse has a great quarterback. It just seems like everybody we play has a dude, and when you’ve got a quarterback, you’ve got a chance to win against anyone. So, I think the league is very competitive and anything can happen any week, so you better show up and be ready.”

Clemson (5-0, 3-0 ACC) is set to take on Boston College (2-3, 1-2) on Saturday in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The game is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. on ABC.

WATCH: Ryan Day talks about C.J. Stroud’s upcoming season and future development with Jim Rome

Day took some time to talk to Jim Rome about C.J. Stroud on Thursday. #GoBucks

Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud is poised for what many hope is a big, big year in Columbus. In fact, if he makes the type of progress he did from not throwing a college pass to becoming a Heisman finalist, you can expect the 2022 OSU football season to be a wild ride, one that has a chance to end with some confetti falling.

Head coach Ryan Day likes to temper those expectations though. He knows that Stroud progressed significantly over the course of the season last year, but that’s all behind him now. What the redshirt sophomore has to focus on now is continued development and improvement to take his game to the next level.

Day took some time to discuss Stroud’s development, mindset, and future with Jim Rome on Thursday. As he always is, Day was introspective and calming in his look at what we can expect from Stroud this fall. He heaped praise but then stayed away from calling him a finished product.

Check out all that Day said when speaking with Rome and get ready to soak in all that we might see from Stroud with one more offseason of seasoning under center for Ohio State.

We’re still a few months away from any live college football coming to the ‘Shoe, but that doesn’t stop us from getting excited for the type of things we might see on the banks of the Olentangy in 2022.

Seahawks cornerback D.J. Reed wants to set the tone in Seattle

Seattle Seahawks cornerback DJ Reed joined the Jim Rome Show on Wednesday to discuss his offseason, philosophy, and the Seahawks’ culture.

D.J. Reed joined the Jim Rome Show on Wednesday to discuss his offseason, personal philosophy, and the culture within the Seattle Seahawks organization among other things.

When asked about his offseason, the fourth-year defensive back stated that things are proceeding smoothly.

“The offseason has been going really good, actually,” Reed said. “I’m training in L.A. I’ve been training at JLT, it’s in Hollywood. We’ve been getting to it to say the least. So, just doing explosive work, running up hills, lifting heavy in the weight room. A lot of explosion work, a lot of linear work and now I’m starting to get into position work to just focus on football and playing corner, so it’s going really well.”

In regards to his philosophy and attitude on the field, Reed stated that he wishes to make an impact early to set the tone so he can feel comfortable and confident throughout the majority of his playing time.

“I just want to set the tone,” he said. “I think that’s the biggest thing and that starts in the beginning of the game. Obviously, I want to do my job, but I want to do my job at the highest level. And that comes from film study, that comes from the demeanor in how I practice and that just gives me confidence to go out there and dominate the person in front of me.”

At 5-foot-9, Reed does not fit coach Pete Carroll’s ideal size and build, but gained his respect before his return from injury with his confidence in his abilities as a cornerback.

“When I came in Pete asked me, probably a couple weeks before we played the 49ers, if I would rather play corner or safety,” Reed continued. “I told him, ‘corner all day.’ I was an All-American at corner in college, I could really play that position at a high level. He said ‘OK, with all these injuries I’m going to throw you in there.’ Just for him to have the confidence to say that after seeing me practice, it meant a lot because coaches coming into the league labeled me as a slot corner just because I was 5-9. For him to give me that opportunity, I have the utmost respect for Pete.”

Reed earned and maintained a starting position for eight games last season and accumulated two interceptions, seven passes defensed, 62 tackles (46 solo), and two fumble recoveries in 10 contests.

Shaun Wade tells Jim Rome love of Ohio State had a lot to do with him coming back last season

Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade is off to the NFL, but first, he stopped by the Jim Rome Show to talk about why he returned last season.

Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade is preparing for the 2021 NFL draft. He decided to forgo his last year of eligibility as a Buckeye now that he’s graduated and embrace the next journey of his football career. The plan seems pretty clear.

Prior to that though, things were anything but settled once the coronavirus pandemic turned the college football season upside down. The Big Ten came out with a modified schedule, then did an about-face and put the season on the shelf, only to revisit that decision and kick off a late and abbreviated Big Ten-only schedule.

When it looked like Wade wouldn’t be able to have one more ride with his brothers at Ohio State, he elected not to wait any longer and declared for the draft. However, once things took an unexpected turn and the season was back in play, he again shifted gears and decided to withdraw his name from the draft and come back to OSU for one more go at it.

We’ve heard bits and pieces about his decision, but he took some time with Jim Rome late last week to explain the process and why he decided to don the scarlet and gray one more time.

“Just having that sour taste losing to Clemson,” Wade said. “For sure. Getting kicked out of the game. And then another thing, I knew I was going to have to have surgery, even though it was unexpected at the time I had it. I felt like I should have had it in January, but I had it late, late March … and another thing, I just wanted to graduate. At the end of the day football ends for everybody at one time — I wanted a degree — that was something special to my family … I just wanted to get my degree and make sure I was good in that area.”

That wasn’t all. Wade then went on to slather love on the environment and what Ohio State meant to him as another deciding factor for his return.

“I just wanted to make sure all the young guys were good, and I just love Ohio State at the end of the day. That’s a great school, great alumni base, great fans, great band. They got a great support system there, and I just love Buckeye Nation.”

Rome asked what his mother and family meant to him growing up and in his decision-making process. You can watch the entire exchange below thanks to the Jim Rome Show.

Wade’s comments are yet another exhibit of former players being front and center about their love for Ohio State and the people there. It’s another reason why there’s nothing like being a part of the brotherhood.

We wish nothing but the best for Wade and hope he’s able to make the most of that unbelievable skill he’s been blessed with at the next level. Once a Buckeye …

LISTEN: E.J. Liddell talks with Jim Rome on his and Ohio State basketball’s improvement this season

Ohio State basketball forward E.J. Liddell appeared on the Jim Rome Show Thursday to talk about his and his team’s improvement this season.

The Ohio State basketball team is one of the hottest squads in the country. It has won five-straight, and eight of its last nine in arguably the toughest conference in all of college basketball.

One of the reasons it has done so well since early on in the season until now is because of the improvement of guys like forward E.J. Liddell. In just his second year, Liddell has almost doubled his scoring, increased his rebounding, and expanded his game outside of the paint with a mid-range jumper and the ability to knock down shots beyond the arc. It all makes for a matchup nightmare for opponents.

You have to wonder though if Liddell and his Buckeye teammates saw this coming. How did a team that was decent last year, and just OK at the beginning of the year improve so much that it is now knocking on the door of a potential No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament?

The sophomore from Bellville, Illinois, was asked about that, and about his game personally while appearing on the Jim Rome Show Thursday. In case you missed any of it, we’ve got the complete segment from Liddell’s appearance for your listening pleasure.

Click on the below and listen to Liddell reflect on his improvement, whether or not he saw this team doing the things it has done this season, the news of Liddell being named to the Midseason Naismith Award watchlist, and more.

Liddell and his teammates will be back in action again on Saturday against Indiana. Let the journey continue.

WATCH: Chris Holtmann tells Jim Rome what it takes to succeed in the Big Ten

Ohio State basketball head coach Chris Holtmann appeared on the Jim Rome show and talked about how to be successful in the Big Ten. WATCH.

Ohio State is still trying to traverse a rough and tumble Big Ten. It’s not a conference for the faint of heart. To be fair, it hasn’t been that way for a long, long time. It seems like every year, we hear coaches and players talk about the depth and toughness of the league, and it just seems to get better and better with each passing season.

This year is no different.

There is a legitimate shot for the conference to get nine teams in the NCAA Tournament this year. It currently has six teams ranked in both the AP and Ferris Mowers polls, and a whopping nine teams in the top 40 of the Net Rankings.

There doesn’t seem to be a day off, with upsets and close games aplenty. Even the teams at the bottom of the league can spring upsets on any given night as we’ve seen.

Chris Holtmann appeared on the Jim Rome show to talk about life in the Big Ten and what it takes to succeed in such a formidable conference. His response was a bit humorous, but spot on. In case you missed his appearance on the show, click on the below and give it a listen. He talks about having a short memory, just playing one game at a time, and whether or not you can teach a team to be tough in end of game situations.

If you’ve watched any of Ohio State’s games this year, you know what Hotlmann is talking about. Just when you feel good about yourself as a team, the league knocks you down a peg. There are two kinds of teams in the Big Ten over the last few years. Those that have been humbled, and those that are about to be humbled.

Cowboys are not happy about being flexed out of primetime for the Browns

Michael Irvin and Mike McCarthy are salty about being affiliated with a lousy team

The news that the Cleveland Browns were gaining another primetime game was met around most of the NFL nation as a positive. Flexing the Browns’ matchup with the New York Giants in Week 15 into the Sunday Night Football feature game rewards the up-and-coming Browns and their bevy of young stars.

It comes at the expense of the Dallas Cowboys. And the self-anointed “America’s Team” isn’t happy about it.

“Number one, I think it’s a reflection of where we are right now as a football team,” Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said during the week. “I mean, these are the types of things that I guess happen when you’re not successful. We’re disappointed, make no bones about it.”

His Cowboys are 3-9 and in last place in the worst division in pro sports. The Browns beat the Cowboys, 49-38, in Dallas in Week 4.

Cowboys legend and Hall of Fame wide receiver Michael Irvin expressed his disgust on a radio interview in Dallas. Speaking on 105.3 The Fan, Irvin summed up the entitled mentality of Dallas fans.

“Can you imagine, man, the Dallas Cowboys flexed out for the Cleveland Browns? Honestly, that’s a new low. That’s just absolutely a new low,” Irvin said with contempt hissing in every syllable.

National radio host Jim Rome, an early enrollee on the Browns bandwagon, clapped back at all the Cowboys hullabaloo,

He wasn’t the only one, either:
