Bills’ Christian Benford reveals when he found out he’d make first start (video)

#Bills’ Christian Benford reveals when he found out he’d make first start (video):

Bills cornerback Christian Benford knows how to keep a secret.

Prior to facing the Rams on a massive stage on Thursday Night Football in Week 1, Benford was told he’d be making the start well before kickoff.

In fact, he knew for a day or more already.

“I didn’t really find out until the night or two nights before the game,” Benford told the Jim Rome Show. “So what was going through my mind was I wasn’t really thinking. I was just ready to go. I was blessed and happy to be able to start that week and I was just ready to ball out.”

Benford did just that. He notched three tackles, a pass defended and Pro Football Focus noted he only allowed three catches.

Rock solid for a sixth-round rookie.

But Benford was impressed as well. Not in himself, but with the way Bills Mafia supported his team during the 31-10 win.

#Bills’ Micah Hyde says 2022 roster is best he’s seen top-to-bottom (video):

Prior to the start of the 2022 regular season against the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday, Buffalo Bills safety Micah Hyde previewed the upcoming year with the Jim Rome Show.

Focusing on his own team, Hyde, a member of the Bills since 2017, thinks this year’s team is the best he’s seen in Buffalo from “top-to-bottom.”

Broncos RB Melvin Gordon rejects ‘bad teammate’ narrative

“I’ve never had a teammate ever, — since high school, since little league — ever tell me I was a bad teammate,” Melvin Gordon told Jim Rome.

You will be held accountable for the things you say.

The Denver Post‘s Sean Keeler wrote an article two weeks ripping Denver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon. To each their own.

“With No. 25, there’s not much footing left when it comes to finding middle ground. Depending on whom you ask, Gordon is either an underrated, strong, confident, misunderstood fantasy-league workhorse or a selfish, me-first, fumble-prone headache,” Keeler wrote in The Denver Post on June 14.

It would have been understandable if Gordon didn’t reply. A wise man, in the words of Tanya Masse, once said nothing. But the problem with not replying to every disparaging comment is that the same detractors will think you don’t get that they’re talking about you. Which brings home the point of not replying (because they’re stupid). But sometimes you have to let it out and tell people how off they are.

Appearing on The Jim Rome Show last Wednesday, Gordon clapped back at Keeler’s “trash article.” The former’s words, not this lowly blogger’s. Gordon actually doesn’t have a problem with the article except for the bad teammate part, saying, “I’ve never had a teammate ever, — since high school, since little league — ever tell me I was a bad teammate.”

Gordon added that he prides himself on “being [a] good teammate” and that he doesn’t “sugarcoat anything.” Listen to Gordon’s comments above. He addresses article around the 1:50 mark.

DaQuan Jones: Winning culture with Bills has changed narrative

DaQuan Jones: Winning culture with #Bills has changed narrative:

DaQuan Jones was one of several new additions to the Buffalo Bills’ defensive line this offseason. He signed to be a run stuffer in the middle.

It’s not the sexiest position, but it’s important and taking his talents to a promising team in Buffalo was an easy decision Jones said.

Appearing on The Jim Rome Show, Jones noted the winning culture with the team can no longer be ignored.

“I don’t think you can talk about the Bills and not think about winning,” Jones said.

WATCH: Payton Thorne joins the Jim Rome Show to discuss season

Payton Thorne joined Jim Rome this morning to talk all things MSU

Payton Thorne has played a huge role in the turnaround Michigan State has had this season, being solid at the quarterback position, and taking care of the football.

While all the focus is on Kenneth Walker, and rightfully so, Payton Thorne deserves credit for running this offense and being the leader that he is.

Thorne went on the Jim Rome show earlier today to discuss all things Michigan State, Kenneth Walker and what has made this turnaround so successful. You can watch his appearance here:

WATCH: Why Jim Rome says Bills ‘get it’ after Chiefs win

WATCH: Why Jim Rome says #Bills ‘get it’ after #Chiefs win:

Jim Rome has long loved what the Buffalo Bills are building in Orchard Park. But there’s something he’s into even more right now.

Fresh off their 38-20 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football, the Bills (4-1) didn’t make the win bigger than it was.

We’ve all heard it from multiple players on the team and Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott. But on The Jim Rome Show, the host took note of this mindset.

“That’s not a crew that’s going to take a victory lap around Arrowhead,” Rome said.

He explained more. Check out the segment below:

Michael Brockers embraces Detroit fans, takes shot at Matt Patricia’s communication skills

Michael Brockers embraces Detroit Lions fans, takes shot at Matt Patricia’s communication skills in an interview with Jim Rome

New Lions defensive end Michael Brockers is one of the more respected veteran voices around the league. After nine largely successful seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, Brockers understands the importance of good coaching. And he likes what he sees so far from new Lions head coach Dan Campbell and his staff full of recent former players.

He broke it down in a lucent and engaging interview with Jim Rome on The Jim Rome Show this week.

The communication between the coaches and players was something Brockers picked up on immediately as a positive in Detroit. He also noted it’s a radical change for the players who remain with the Lions after the Matt Patricia era.

Brockers danced around the coaching and communication issue a bit with a nice discourse,

“The way you communicate is vital, because a lot of guys don’t want to be yelled at or screamed at and stuff like that. Some people just want you to talk to them like a man, getting an understanding of what you’re talking about and what you’re trying to teach, and then let’s roll. A lot of players in this league, we’re not about the BS. Just tell us what we’ve got to do, explain it to us in terms that we understand, though, and let’s get the job done.”

And then the gloves came off. This is as pointed of a criticism as you’ll get from a respected veteran player like Brockers.

“There’s a lot of guys coming from that ex-Patricia era, and they’re like, ‘Man, this coaching staff understands. This coaching staff talks to you, they communicate with you.’ And you see a lot of guys loving that and buying in.” Brockers told Rome.

He also noted some similarities between Campbell and his old head coach in Los Angeles, Sean McVay.

“Working with him is awesome because he reminds me a lot of McVay and how he came in, as far as understands there’s no ego when it comes to his coaching style. It’s all about the team,” Brockers said.

He also sent a warm message to the Lions fans.

“This is a football town. They love the team,” Brockers said enthusiastically. “They’re passionate about the team and where it’s going. No matter how bad the team is doing, no matter how good the team is doing, they’re a Detroit Lions fan … when you have a fan base behind you that’s going to support you and really not put a lot of pressure on you … that’s what I love about the fan base.”

Austin Hooper: Browns ‘can compete with any other football team in the league’

Hooper talked about Super Bowl expectations on the Jim Rome Show

Browns tight end Austin Hooper is one of the few Cleveland players with experience playing in a Super Bowl. The one-time Atlanta Falcons standout is ready to roll into his second year with the Browns with high expectations.

Hooper joined the Jim Rome Show this week to talk about the team’s expectations for itself and why having lofty goals is such a good thing for the players.

“You want to be in an organization where the expectation is to be aggressive,” Hooper told Rome. “We want it now. There’s no complacency. There’s no ‘alright we’re building for 4-5 years down the road’. No. We’ve got the guys here where we feel like we can compete with any other football team in the league.”

Hooper continued,

“It’s up to us to put the product out there on the field and work our tails off.”

Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah: ‘No heart issues at all’ in my medical profile

Rumors of a potential heart issue might have caused Owusu-Koramoah to fall to the 2nd round

It was stunning to see Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah still on the board when the Cleveland Browns traded up to select the Notre Dame linebacker with the No. 52 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. One of the reasons given for his fall way out of the first round was a rumor of a potential heart issue on his medical examination.

Owusu-Koramoah went on the Jim Rome Show recently and debunked any talk of a heart condition.

“There was something that came up in terms of what guys were saying,” Owusu-Koramoah told Rome. “But in terms of me, in terms of my personal aspect, there were really no heart issues at all. There was nothing that was ticked off. Going back to Notre Dame, looking at the medical records and everything, I never really had any heart issues or anything going on there.”

No actual diagnosis or even detail on what the alleged issue might be has ever been brought forward.

David Njoku ‘proud’ of Browns playoff journey but ‘not really happy’ it ended early

Njoku sure sounds like a guy who expects to be back in Cleveland in 2021

Browns tight end David Njoku joined the Jim Rome Show during the Super Bowl week to discuss the Browns successful season, his status with the team and teammates and more. Njoku made some intriguing comments to Rome, who was one of the Browns’ biggest cheerleaders amongst the national media last season.

Njoku talked about his personally trying year, noting he “learned a lot about myself through adversity, physical and mental.”

As for the team aspect, Njoku echoed what other Browns have said,

“We’re proud in that standpoint but obviously we’re not really happy that we just got that far. We wanted to go as far as possible. It is what it is … get back to work.”

Njoku also volunteered that he and teammate Austin Hooper, who took over his role as the primary tight end, have become very close friends.

“Austin is one of my best friends right now. Just this past month that we’ve hung out, that guy and I, we’ve been through a lot, training together a lot,” Njoku said. He also spoke well of 2020 rookie TE Harrison Bryant.

It’s an interesting peek behind Njoku’s curtain and one that reveals a player who sure sounds like he thinks he’ll be back in Cleveland.
