Senior Bowl director sees a lot of potential in Dolphins rookie LB Channing Tindall

The third-round pick has a high ceiling.

The Miami Dolphins had to wait nearly two full nights until they had the opportunity to add the first rookie to their roster this year, as general manager Chris Grier had traded the team’s first and second-round selections as part of a deal for wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

However, when the Dolphins did select linebacker Channing Tindall with pick No. 102, a number of analysts noted that Miami was getting a talented player. One expert that got to see Tindall up close and personal, Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy, recently spoke to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson about the type of player that the Dolphins drafted.

“Channing has got a really high ceiling,” Nagy said. “There was a game in the beginning of the year, against Clemson, that he may have played only 10, 11 snaps the whole game, but the 10, 11 he played, he got your attention. The Georgia linebacker coach is a friend of mine, and he has been telling me that he loves Channing and that group of linebackers. They had so many [top] guys.”

Nagy, like many who follow college football, understands that a unit that also supported Quay Walker (drafted No. 22 overall) and Nakobe Dean (drafted No. 83 overall) wouldn’t be able to showcase their third linebacker to the best of their ability.

However, it’s obvious that Tindall has the attributes that football coaches covet.

“The things that stick out about Channing are his speed and range and physicality,” Nagy said. “Everyone in the league is looking for guys that can run and hit and cover, and Channing can certainly do that. You fill your linebacker room with guys that run in the 4.4s, and you’re heading in the right direction. He wouldn’t have reached 102 if he played a more prominent role on a lesser defense. He gets clumped in as a byproduct of that particular unit.”

Now that Tindall is in Miami, he’s joining another group of linebackers that clearly have talent, but there are opportunities for a rookie to make a name for himself. By the end of his rookie season, the former Bulldog could be seeing the field more than a number of the veterans in aqua and orange.

Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy discusses Dolphins QB Skylar Thompson as an NFL prospect

He thought his age would keep him from being drafted.

Last season, the Miami Dolphins were without starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for five games due to injury which forced them to start Jacoby Brissett.

Miami went 2-3 in those games, but one of those wins came against the Baltimore Ravens when Tagovailoa played the second half, leading to 16 of the team’s 22 points that day.

The Dolphins’ front office and new coaching staff knew that they needed to upgrade at backup this offseason, so they brought in Teddy Bridgewater and Chris Streveler to be the second and third strings respectively. However, during the 2022 NFL draft, Miami used their seventh-round pick on quarterback Skylar Thompson out of Kansas State.

Since then, Thompson has already beaten out Streveler, giving him the third spot on the depth chart for now.

While there’s not a ton of opportunity for the public to see what’s going on at OTAs and minicamps, a lot is put into the word of the experts who have gotten to see him before he entered the NFL.

This week, Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy spoke to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson and explained what the Dolphins got in Thompson.

“We liked him. Going back a couple years, we were watching him quite a bit. Met him at the Manning camp. Really liked him. I thought his age [24] would force him to go undrafted. Good athlete, gritty kid, he plays the position well. He processes well, makes good decisions. It has been a durability thing and an age thing with him.

“We had good grades on Skylar the last couple years. You’re drafting a guy you anticipate competing for in undrafted free agency, so by picking him in the seventh round [you avoid needing to compete with other teams to sign him]. He is a good quarterback.”

It’s unclear whether or not head coach Mike McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier want to enter the 2022 NFL season with two or three quarterbacks on the active roster. Either way, Thompson has a good shot to stick around on the 53-man or on the practice squad.

If, over the next few seasons, he can develop into a competent backup that the team has confidence in, the pick will be considered a definite success. However, fans will hope he never sees the field because that means their starters are healthy and playing well.

Senior Bowl director evaluates Dolphins RB ZaQuandre White

He believes an injury at the Senior Bowl and poor testing results led to him going undrafted.

In 2021, the Miami Dolphins struggled to get anything going on the ground, rushing for the fourth-fewest yards per game (92.2).

Going into the offseason with a new head coach and a new offensive gameplan, there was a concerted effort by the team to improve their running game. They signed Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert early on in the process as well as Sony Michel just a couple of weeks back.

Between those signings, Miami signed undrafted free agent running back ZaQuandre White. White began his collegiate career as a linebacker at Florida State before transferring to Iowa Western Community College and then South Carolina.

In his final two seasons, White rushed for 642 yards and two touchdowns on an impressive 6.2 yards per attempt.

The former Gamecock was invited to the Senior Bowl this past year, and that’s where executive director Jim Nagy got a close look at the back.

In a conversation with the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, Nagy evaluated White as a prospect.

“I know some teams that had as high as fourth round grades on him before the pre draft process,” Nagy said. “Late bloomer as a running back. History on defense. He didn’t test quite as well as you thought he might [in Pro Day measurables]. There was word he might be one of the top testing running backs. He tested well but not quite to that level.

“You put on the tape and he has explosiveness. He can put his foot in the ground and there’s a noticeable burst when he plants his foot. He’s got physicality that projects well on special teams. You feel good about that with ZaQuandre – physicality and explosiveness on contact and a background on defense tackling people that should help on special teams.

“Nice get for Miami. He has make-it talent.”

If White wants to make the roster in 2022, it would likely be as a special teams contributor, but there’s a chance that he sticks around as a member of the practice squad this season. He seems to have some traits that could make an impact player at the NFL level. At this point, Miami has a lot of talented veterans at the position, but if White were to refine his skills, he could be an impact player down the line.

Eagles to hire former Steelers executive Brandon Hunt to a front office role

Philadelphia Eagles to hire former Pittsburgh Steelers executive Brandon Hunt to a front office role

The Eagles are set to add another talented staffer to the front office, as Geoff Mosher is reporting that Brandon Hunt is leaving the Steelers to join Howie Roseman’s staff.

Hunt is a homegrown talent for the Steelers and a Pittsburgh native who attended IUP and had been learning on the job under Kevin Colbert for almost 15-years.

Hunt officially joined Pittsburgh’s scouting department in 2010, before being named the pro scouting coordinator for Houston after Doug Whaley was hired as the general manager of the Buffalo Bills.

The move is essentially a trade of front office personnel, with Andy Weidl heading to the Steelers as the assistant GM to Omar Khan.

Eagles interviewed Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy for a position in scouting department

With a restructuring going on in the front office, the Philadelphia Eagles interviewed Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy for a position in the scouting department and will also interview Steelers staffer Brandon Hunt as well

The NFL draft starts in Mobile and with the Eagles looking to continue adding quality prospects to the roster, Howie Roseman is reaching out to add a big fish to the front office.

Jeff McLane and Josh Tolentino of The Inquirer are reporting that Philadelphia recently interviewed Jim Nagy, the Senior Bowl director, for a key scout department position.

McLane is reporting that the Eagles will also interview Steelers front office staffer Brandon Hunt for a key role.

Nagy offers over 20 years of NFL Scouting experience and he was a key member of three Super Bowl-winning rosters.

The interviews are coming just days after Catherine Raiche accepted a key position with the Browns, and then Philadelphia fired Casey Weidl and three other staffers.

Oklahoma’s Perrion Winfrey named Senior Bowl MVP

After a tremendous week in Mobile, Sooners defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey earned MVP honors after the National team won 20-10.

The Oklahoma Sooners were well represented at the 2022 Senior Bowl with five players looking to make a name for themselves in the all-star week. Jeremiah Hall, Isaiah Thomas, Marquis Hayes, Brian Asamoah, and Perrion Winfrey stood out at different times during the week, but it was Winfrey who was getting the most buzz.

Winfrey was named the Senior Bowl MVP after a tremendous performance on Saturday. After a near-dominant week in individual and team drills Winfrey carried that over into the game, helping the National team, coached by the New York Jets, 20-10. Winfrey had a couple of sacks and impressed Senior Bowl Director Jim Nagy with his demeanor on the sidelines.

Winfrey, who is currently projected to be selected in the second round arguably saw a big bump to his draft stock. With his productive week, he could push his name into first round consideration by April.

Over the next few months teams will get more of a taste of Winfrey’s personality, size, and athleticism during Oklahoma’s Pro Day, team workouts and the NFL draft combine.

Winfrey’s pass rush ability, physicality, and motor will make NFL teams salivate as they look to improve their interior defensive line.

2022 #SeniorBowl: 7 running back prospects for the #Eagles to watch #TheDraftStartsInMobile #NFLDraft2022 #FlyEaglesFly

We’re less than 100-days from the start of the 2022 NFL draft and with Philadelphia owning three first-round picks, Howie Roseman will need to increase the normal due diligence done on eligible prospects.

The draft actually starts in Mobile, Alabama, where the start of senior bowl practices will kick off on Tuesday, February 1.

The rosters are stacked with talent on both the American and National teams, with the former Eagles assistant coach Duce Staley leading the American side.

We’re profiling the position groups for both teams, while also breaking down several players at each group for Philadelphia to watch.

The first group up we’ll be the running backs.

2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl practice schedule, game-day rosters

#TheDraftStartsInMOBILE here’s a look at the 2022 #ReesesSeniorBowl practice schedule and game rosters #SeniorBowl

The Eagles are entering the 2022 NFL offseason with some stability after rookie head coach Nick Sirianni, led the Birds back to the postseason with a 9-8 record.

Philadelphia will now enter the offseason with $24 million in salary-cap space, three first-round picks, and four of the first-51 picks in April’s selection process.

The Draft officially starts in Mobile, and that means the Reese’s Senior Bowl is prepared to kick off a week of practice and festivities before next Sunday’s 72nd edition.

In 2021, there were six Senior Bowl participants drafted in the first round, 35 through the first three rounds, and 106 total picks, representing 41% of the entire 2021 NFL Draft.

As of Week 1 of this season, there are 626 Senior Bowl alums on NFL active rosters, which means 37% of all NFL players played in the Senior Bowl.

Here’s a look at the players that will be participating in the 2022 Senior Bowl.

Watch: Interviews with Senior Bowl’s Jim Nagy and Lions CB Jerry Jacobs

The Detroit Lions Podcast interviews with Senior Bowl’s Jim Nagy and Lions CB Jerry Jacobs

It was a very big week on the Detroit Lions Podcast featuring Lions Wire’s Jeff Risdon. We were joined by Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy and Lions cornerback Jerry Jacobs.

Nagy provided a ton of insight into the upcoming Senior Bowl and the Lions’ involvement in it. From forming the teams to adding opportunities for HBCU coaches to work with the staff, Nagy broke down a lot of the details on how the Senior Bowl goes about its business. He also talked about growing up a Lions fan and then the internal conflict of taking a job with the Packers.

Following Nagy’s excellent appearance, Jacobs joined the show. It’s his third time on the podcast and Jacobs never disappoints. He brought us up to speed on his injury rehab, what it was like to get his opportunity as an undrafted free agent and how much it hurt to have the season end with a knee injury. He’s a very easy guy to root for and appreciate.

Jets, Lions staffs to coach the 2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl

#NewYork #Jets, #Detroit #Lions staffs to coach the 2022 Reese’s #SeniorBowl #TheDraftStartsInMOBILE

With non-playoff teams starting their preparation for the NFL draft, Jim Nagy and the staff over at the Reese’s Senior Bowl just announced the coaching staff for the 2022 contest.

With both teams having the top-two picks, Robert Saleh of the Jets and Dan Campbell of the Lions will take their staffs down to Mobile, Alabama for the 73rd annual Reese’s Senior Bowl to be played on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Hancock Whitney Stadium on the campus of the University of South Alabama.

Only college seniors and fourth-year junior graduates are eligible for the game and it provides NFL teams, scouts, and executives with an early look at some potential future stars.

The teams with the lowest winning percentage that season usually get the first opportunity to coach in the game, but only if a majority of their staff – and head coach – are intact.

Last year in 2021, the Carolina Panthers and Miami Dolphins coaching staffs led the charge after the Eagles declined, and the Jaguars and Jets were both hiring new head coaches.

Jacksonville had Urban Meyer, who was fired, and the team will now conduct another search.

The game will be aired live on the NFL Network at 2:30 ET. The Lions own the No. 2 pick, while the Jets own the Nos. 4 and 10 selections in the 2022 NFL draft.

Philadelphia owns the 15th and 16th picks as of now.
