Two Penn State basketball players enter transfer portal

A pair of Penn State basketball players have entered the transfer portal.

With the [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] decision about staying or going to Notre Dame still unknown, two Penn State players have decided to enter the transfer portal.

[autotag]Dallion Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Caleb Dorsey[/autotag] were members of the 2020 recruiting class. They’ve decided they would like to test the waters elsewhere after not seeing much playing time this past season.

Both players are former three-star recruits who were brough in by former coach [autotag]Pat Chambers[/autotag]. They had to play their freshman year under interim coach [autotag]Jim Ferry[/autotag] and then spent the next two seasons coached by Shrewsberry.

These decisions likely come on the heels of not seeing much playing time this past season. Johnson had seen a prominent role during his sophomore year, starting 14 games and averaging 14.6 minutes per game. That was reduced to 8.7 minutes this season with zero starts.

Dorsey saw more playing time this past season than he ever had before at Penn State. He started nine games and averaged 12.0 minutes of floor time. However, he didn’t see action during any of the Big Ten Tournament or NCAA Tournment.

It’s not surprising that these players would enter the transfer portal. If Shrewsberry stays, neither were recruited by him and fits what he’s looking to build. Both have two years of eligibility remaining stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic that has granted players an extra year.

The transfer portal is still in the early stages for this offseason. Programs need to see how many available scholarships they’ll have and which players are departing.

By all measures, this shouldn’t be something alarming that signals Shrewsberry is definitely leaving Penn State. We’ll know that decision soon, but right now there are no indicators one way or another.

Another Penn State men’s basketball player enters transfer portal

Penn State forward Abdou Tsimbila is the latest player to enter the transfer portal as Penn State’s busy transfer portal season continues.

There is still a lot of player movement in college basketball as players are entering and leaving the transfer portal to continue their college careers.

On Friday, Penn State forward Abdou Tsimbila reportedly entered his name in the transfer portal.

During the 2020-21 season under coach interim head coach Jim Ferry, Tsimbila played in 16 games for a total of 74 minutes with 25 rebounds and  nine blocks while scoring 17 points.

He scored four points in two games during the season against Michigan and Illinois. Tsimbila had seven rebounds against Illinois.

Now the question is when will head coach Micah Shrewsberry make his next move in the transfer portal.

Jim Ferry says he will return to Penn State for a football game

Former Penn State interim head coach Jim Ferry says PSU will always be a special place for him, and he’ll be back for a football game.

Whenever you move on to a new job, you want to take the time to say thank you for the opportunity you got at your former location.

On Wednesday, Jim Ferry was introduced as the new head coach at UMBC. During his introductory press conference, Ferry was asked if there was anything he wanted to say to Penn State and its fans. Naturally, he obliged and offered his thanks to the entire Penn State basketball community.

“I’d like to thank everybody for the support throughout the year,” Ferry responded. “I know they missed not being able to come out to the games, but all the text messages and emails I received during the season and even after when I left Penn State, you know you did the right thing when all those people are reaching out.”

Ferry served as the interim head coach of the Nittany Lions for the 2020-21 season, taking over for Pat Chambers, who was removed as head coach shortly before the start of the season amid controversy. It was not an easy spot for Ferry to take over, and the season proved to be a challenging one in a deep Big Ten.

“Penn State is always going to be a special place to me. My two daughters are graduates,” Ferry said. “It’s nice to feel that the respect of what we did and how we did it.”

Ferry went on to say he will return to Penn State as a fan to attend football games with his daughters. In the meantime, maybe Penn State can book UMBC for a future basketball game.

Former Penn State basketball coach is new head coach of UMBC Retrievers

As Penn State moves in a new direction with its basketball program, a former head coach is ready to write his next chapter on the sideline.

When the college basketball season ended for the Penn State Nittany Lions, it was widely expected interim head coach Jim Ferry would be moving on to another program as Penn State opted to go in an entirely new direction. Penn State did that with the hiring of Purdue assistant Micah Shrewsberry to be the new head coach. While Penn State and Shrewsberry have been busy filling out their new basketball staff, Ferry has found his own landing spot.

University of Maryland, Baltimore County announced on Monday Ferry will be the next men’s basketball coach of their program. Ferry will fill the vacancy with the UMBC program that opened up following Ryan Odom leaving to accept a coaching offer from Utah State.

UMBC is most famous for their historic upset of No. 1 seed Virginai in the 2018 NCAA Basketball Tournament. The Retrievers became the first men’s team to win a first-round game as a No. 16 seed.

Ferry was an assistant coach at Penn State from 2017 through 2020. He was named the interim head coach prior to the 2020-21 season after Penn State removed Pat Chambers as head coach shortly before the start of the season. Penn State went 11-14 with Ferry serving as the interim head coach.

Ferry will be taking on his first full-time head coaching job since before his time at Penn State, when he was the head coach of Duquesne from 2012 to 2017. He was also the head coach of Long Island from 2002 through 2012, with back-to-back NCAA tournament second-round appearances in 2011 and 2012.

Former Nittany Lion Lamar Stevens send along his congratulations on Twitter.

The move has also been praised by college basketball analyst Andy Katz…

Watch what Penn State interim coach Jim Ferry said about Ohio State in the postgame presser

Penn State interim coach Jim Ferry met with the media after the crushing last-second defeat vs. Ohio State. Watch him credit the Buckeyes.

A win is a win, is a win. What unfolded in Value City Arena between Ohio State and Penn State was the definition of a Big Ten donnybrook. The Buckeyes came out on fire and put the Nittany Lions on their heels.

Penn State pushed back though and turned momentum around near the end of the first half and took that all the way through the last five minutes of the game and looked like it was on its way to a win. However, the Buckeyes found something late, made some plays on both ends, and squeaked out a hard-fought 83-79 win that could have gone either way.

The Nittany Lions interim coach Jim Ferry met with the media on a Zoom call after the game to discuss what transpired. He was obviously disappointed but gave a lot of credit to Ohio State as well.

If you missed any of his comments, thanks to the GoPSUtv YouTube Channel you can catch them all. Just click on the below and watch Ferry discuss his team’s fight, what transpired at the end of the game, and how difficult the Buckeyes were to guard.
