Jets swap Zach Wilson for Chris Streveler as playoff hopes are just about down the drain in 19-3 loss

Zach Wilson was not ready for primetime

The members of Saturday Night Live during the show’s first three seasons were referred to as the “Not Ready for Prime Time Players.” On Thursday at MetLife Stadium, only about nine miles from 30 Rockefeller Plaza, where SNL is filmed, New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson proved he too is not ready for prime time.

Wilson withered under the bright lights of a national spotlight on Amazon Prime and was benched in the second half in favor of Chris Streveler as the Jets fell to the Jacksonville Jaguars 19-3. The loss makes it all but official that the Jets will not be going to the playoffs after starting the season 5-2 and will extend the league’s longest postseason drought, which will reach 12 seasons.

It may not have been Wilson’s worst performance, number-wise, but being that it was a primetime game in December with playoff implications, it makes the performance that much worse. Wilson went 9/18 for 92 yards and an interception before head coach Robert Saleh finally made the swap to Streveler in the third quarter, perhaps a little too late, though. Wilson’s QB rating was 41.9. Even simple throws Wilson is missing.

Before the quarterback switch, there was nothing to talk about with the Jets’ offense, especially on the ground. New York had all of four rushing yards at halftime.

Head coach Robert Saleh said after the game he wanted to get the run game going and that’s what led to the swap at quarterback and not necessarily a benching of Wilson.

After Streveler came in, the Jets did get the run game going — “Snowballed, in a good way,” as Saleh put it — and at least made it to 66 rushing yards as a team. 54 of those yards came from Streveler, himself. The actual running backs, on the other hand, totaled just 11 yards, including -2 yards from Zonovan Knight. That is not a typo. That is a negative sign in front of the two.

Streveler went 10/15 for 90 yards but could have had a big touchdown pass but an off-target throw led to just a 30-yard completion to tight end C.J. Uzomah instead of a long touchdown.

The offense as a whole was just all sorts of messy, between Wilson, the offensive line and some drops from receivers, namely Corey Davis. The Jets were out-gained by the Jaguars 365-227, including 147-66 on the ground. Jacksonville also had almost double the number of first downs as New York, 19-10. It also didn’t help that the Jets went 2/13 on third down. The Jaguars were 7/16.

Another turning point of this game was on defense for the Jets, when they allowed a 96-yard, 16-play drive in the second quarter that took 8:15 off the clock. The drive ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by Trevor Lawrence. That seemed to suck all the life out of the Jets.

New York scored a field goal on their first drive and then nothing after. Five punts, an interception at the end of the half, a fumble and two turnovers on downs. And with this being such an important game for the Jets, that’s your story of the 2022 New York Jets, who have now lost four straight and six of their last eight. A team that was once 5-2 has gone 2-6 since.

On the one hand, it’s nice for the Jets to have been playing meaningful games in December, On the other hand, the offseason will have plenty of moments where the Jets will be wondering “what if.”

The Jets close the home portion of their schedule with a whimper. They finish up the season with trips to Seattle and Miami and maybe salvage a winning season. The Jets will have to figure out their quarterback situation for those two games, but it’s probably safe to say that, like Pete Davidson and Cecily Strong to name a few, Zach Wilson will not be returning to the show.

Jets offense playing like the preseason instead of the postseason, trailing 13-3 at half

It’s a mess in New York, to say the least

Through two quarters of play, the end of the road for the 2022 season is very much coming over the horizon for the New York Jets. The offense is non-existent and the defense seems to be having a hangover from the Lions loss on Sunday. At the half, the Jets trail the Jaguars 13-3.

Zach Wilson continues to struggle in a game where the Jets really needed him at his best. The offensive line is also getting abused and not doing Wilson and the running game any favors, as yet again, the rushing attack has been next to nothing. New York has a whopping four rushing yards. That’s not a typo. Four rushing yards. Michael Carter has three, Wilson has one, Zonovan Knight has zero.

On the flip side, the Jaguars really sucked a lot of life out of the Jets by going 96 yards on 16 plays in 8:15, culminating with a 1-yard touchdown from Trevor Lawrence…aka the quarterback the Jets were in line to get before winning two games in 2020 and dropping to No. 2 in the draft order, in case you hadn’t heard.

Let’s face it, there isn’t much to talk about. Wilson is 7/14 for 78 yards while Trevor Lawrence is 11/16 for 147 yards. It’s a mess and the Jets might as well play Chris Streveler at this point. The Zach Wilson experiment is a bust. He’s missing easy throws and isn’t seeing the blitz. He’s a mess, the Jets are a mess. Almost time to start thinking about 2023.

Final score prediction for Jets vs. Jaguars in Week 16

Drop your final score predictions

The playoffs basically start tonight for the New York Jets. A loss doesn’t completely eliminate them, but it will put them pretty close.

Thursday does not bring an easy task for the Jets. The Jaguars have been playing some really good football of late and now all of a sudden control their playoff destiny. The Jets hope to have that fate after this weekend, which they can if they win and they get help in the form of a Patriots loss Saturday against the Bengals.

First things first, the Jets have to take care of business against the Jaguars. How do they do that? Well, having Quinnen Williams back is a huge plus because the key right now is stopping Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who has starting playing like the No. 1 pick we always expected him to play as. Things are finally clicking for him, but the Jets provide a tough challenge for Lawrence. Especially when you consider offensive tackle Cam Robinson is out with a knee injury, so it’ll be Walker Little starting in his place.

Another key injury for the Jaguars is 2022 No. 1 pick Travon Walker, who is out with an ankle injury. Walker has been somewhat quiet as a rookie, but it’s still a key loss for Jacksonville.

Pro Bowl cornerback Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed have another pair of good wide receivers to go up against. Christian Kirk and Zay Jones have provided Lawrence with a solid pair of weapons this season. Jones had three touchdowns in Jacksonville‘s big win over the Cowboys on Sunday.

But it all depends on the play of the quarterback taken after Lawrence, Zach Wilson. And if there is a matchup for him to exploit, it’s this one. Jacksonville has allowed the fourth-most passing yards and are tied for the fifth-most passing touchdowns allowed this season. With Mike White breathing down his neck, and with the Jets still in the playoff hunt, the stakes have never been higher.

You may also see some package plays with Chris Streveler, who is active for the first time this season. It will be interesting to see how the Jets use him tonight.

This is a big one for the Jets. Will the weather be a factor? We’ll see. But it does feel like the Jets will fall short of keeping up with the Jaguars on offense and the end of the road may soon be near.

Prediction: Jaguars 24, Jets 17

Jets announce inactives for Week 16: Chris Streveler active, Jets dressing 3 quarterbacks

Jets announce inactives for Week 16

The New York Jets have announced their inactives for Thursday Night Football against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Four were already known beforehand: Mike White, Denzel Mims, Jeff Smith and Brandin Echols.

Safety Lamarcus Joyner will miss his second straight game with a hip injury. That helps explain the call-up again for Will Parks, who will get the start next to Jordan Whitehead.

RB James Robinson and TE Jeremy Ruckert are once again healthy scratches, meaning no revenge game for Robinson against the Jaguars.

This means the Jets are dressing three quarterbacks: Zach Wilson, Joe Flacco and Chris Streveler. It has been reported that Streveler could have some package plays tonight. It will be interesting to watch.

The Jaguars inactives are as follows:

WR Kendric Pryor
CB Montaric Brown
CB Gregory Junior
OLB Travon Walker
OLB De’Shaan Dixon
OL Cam Robinson
DL Foley Fatukasi

Jets elevate Chris Streveler, Will Parks from practice squad for Week 16

Chris Streveler QB2 tonight? Wildcat coming?

The quarterback some fans had clamored for at points of this season is going to be a part of the gameday roster tonight. The Jets have elevated preseason hero QB Chris Streveler from the practice squad for Thursday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, per Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic. And “this time, it’s for real,” Rosenblatt says.

That’s likely in reference to Week 8 when the Jets elevated Streveler only to make him inactive against the Patriots. That was likely to prevent a team from grabbing Streveler to bring onto their own active roster. This could also mean Streveler will be the No. 2 quarterback Thursday, as Ian Rapoport is reporting the Jets may have a package of plays involving Streveler.

In any event, Streveler will be on the active roster Thursday and may very well dress against the Jaguars. The Jets are also elevating safety Will Parks, who was elevated in Week 15 as well.

Report: Quinnen Williams will play vs. Jaguars

Quinnen Williams is back

Consider this an early Christmas present from the Jets Thursday. Freshly-named Pro Bowl defensive tackle Quinnen Williams reportedly will play tonight against the Jaguars, per Connor Hughes on SNY.

Williams was considered questionable with a calf injury but was listed as a full participant on Wednesday’s estimated practice report — the Jets held walkthroughs all week — which was a good sign that he would be able to play.

After clearly missing Williams against the Lions, the Jets will get a much-needed boost as they look to cool down a Jaguars team that has scored victories over the Titans and Cowboys over the last two weeks and make life miserable for Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who has finally started seeing everything click for him since coming into the NFL.

The Jets need to win to keep their playoff hopes somewhat manageable. A loss could soon signal the end of the line. Getting their Pro Bowl defensive tackle back is a huge help in that department.

Jets vs. Jaguars final injury report: Practice squad wide receiver call up likely with Mims and Smith out

Final injury report for Jets vs. Jaguars

The Jets announced their final injury report for Week 16 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. As with Monday and Tuesday, it was just a walkthrough on Wednesday, so the practice designations are estimates.

That said, four players have been ruled out for Thursday, including two wide receivers. Denzel Mims (concussion) and Jeff Smith (knee) will not play, leaving the Jets with just four healthy wide receivers at the moment on the 53-man roster, as Corey Davis will return this week. He was listed as a full participant Wednesday and does not have a game designation for Thursday. Expect a call-up from the practice squad for either Irvin Charles or Diontae Spencer.

Also out for Thursday are two players that were already known at the beginning of the week: quarterback Mike White (ribs) and cornerback Brandin Echols (quad).

Offensive tackles Duane Brown and George Fant were also both listed as full participants Wednesday and both are good to go for Thursday.

Defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (calf) is listed as questionable but was listed as a full participant, so that should stand as a good sign for his return after missing Sunday against the Lions. Safety Lamarcus Joyner (hip), who also missed Sunday, is also questionable. He was listed as a limited participant all week.

Running back Zonovan Knight was a late add Wednesday wth an ankle injury and is listed as questionable, but was listed as a full participant Wednesday.

For the Jaguars, DL Foley Fatukasi (ankle), OL Cam Robinson (knee) and No. 1 pick OLB Travon Walker (ankle) are all out. QB Trevor Lawrence (toe), LB Chad Muma (ankle), OL Brandon Scherff (abdomen), OT Jawaan Taylor (hamstring) and S Andrew Wingard (shoulder) are all listed as questionable.
