Jets Rookie Power Rankings: Denzel Mims showcases potential in loss to Chargers

Jets Wire evaluates New York’s rookie class following Gang Green’s loss to the Patriots on Sunday.

The Jets endured their 10th loss of 2020 against the Chargers in Week 11, but there are still plenty of positives to take away from the defeat thanks to New York’s budding rookie class.

Mekhi Becton, Ashtyn Davis, Braden Mann, Denzel Mims and La’Mical Perine all made numerous positive contributions against Los Angeles. Bryce Hall also made his first career start at cornerback and while he did not exactly lockdown Keenan Allen, he did not shy away from the challenge of covering one of football’s most dynamic wide receivers — a big reason why the Jets are so high on him.

It’s only up for Hall and the rest of New York’s rookie class from here. Let’s take a look at where they stand in Jets Wire’s latest rookie power rankings.

Jets ink Ashtyn Davis to rookie deal | Entire 2020 draft class now signed

The Jets have signed safety Ashtyn Davis to his rookie contract.

The New York Jets have signed all nine of their 2020 draft picks.

The team announced that third-round pick Ashtyn Davis has agreed to the terms of his rookie contract. It’s a four-year deal worth $4.9 million. His 2020 salary cap charge is $894,000. Davis was the last Jets draft pick to sign.

New York picked Davis with the 68th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of the University of California. After originally going to college for track and field, Davis joined the California football team in 2015. He still ran track and field during the spring season, though.

Davis started out as a cornerback in his first two seasons but switched to safety by his junior year. He racked up 166 total tackles, seven interceptions, 12 pass defenses, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles between both positions. The speedy Davis was also used on special teams as a kick returner. Davis averaged 22.9 yards per kickoff return and totaled 1,604 return yards.

The Jets love Davis’ versatility and view him as a Swiss Army knife on defense. He can play anywhere in the secondary and can fly all over the field with his speed. New York can use him as kick returner, punt returner, or both as part of Brant Boyer’s special teams unit.

Jets sign Jabari Zuniga to rookie contract

The Jets have signed Jabari Zuniga to his rookie contract.

When Jabari Zuniga arrives for Jets training camp on Tuesday, he’ll officially be a member of the team.

The Jets announced Monday that Zuniga has signed his rookie contract. The deal is for four years and just under $5 million. Mekhi Becton is now the lone Jets rookie that remains unsigned.

New York picked Zuniga out of Florida in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He was one of two players picked by the Jets out of the University of Florida. The other was running back La’Mical Perine.

At Florida, Zuniga recorded 18.5 sacks in 39 games. He also had 116 total tackles (33 for loss), one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. Zuniga’s senior year was limited to five games due to a high ankle sprain.

The Jets view Zuniga as a guy who can bring pressure off the edge with both his speed and strength. He ran a solid 40-yard dash at 4.64 seconds and did well in the bench press, putting up 29 reps at the NFL Combine back in February.

At the moment, Zuniga will be a backup defensive end. Based on what we saw in Gregg Williams’ defense last year, though, Zuniga should find his way rotating in and out of the lineup. If he has an impressive training camp, he could see plenty of snaps come the regular season.

Jets ink WR Denzel Mims to 4-year rookie contract

The Jets have signed rookie wide receiver Denzel Mims to a four year contract.

The New York Jets have locked up their 2020 second-round pick for the next four seasons.

Denzel Mims signed his four-year rooki deal worth $5.4 million with $3 million guaranteed on Friday, according to the Daily News’ Manish Mehta. Mims is the second Jet rookie to come to terms on a contract, joining Bryce Hall. That means the Jets still have seven more rookies to sign, including first-round pick Mekhi Becton.

New York took Mims with the 58th overall pick out of Baylor. At Baylor, Mims recorded two 1,000-yard seasons as a sophomore and senior. In Mims’ final three seasons, he recorded at least eight touchdowns, including 12 in his senior season.

The Jets think Mims could be an explosive weapon for Sam Darnold for years to come. He has the size, speed and athleticism to be a dangerous target, but it’s going to take some time for him to get adjusted to the NFL. However, he is off to a good start, as he was one of the players down in Florida for Darnold’s organized workouts.

With Mims signed, he’ll be ready to hit the field for training camp once that begins at the end of July.
