Jamal Adams, Sam Darnold think Jets are ‘not that far away’ from contending

Jamal Adams and Sam Darnold don’t think the Jets are that far away.

The Jets are riding high following their sixth win of the season over the Steelers on Sunday.

Six wins are the most the Jets have had since 2015 when they won 10 games, but failed to reach the playoffs. New York has won five of its last seven games after starting the season 1-7.

At this point of the year, players are looking at any success as a glimpse of hope for the future. Jamal Adams is starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“We’re not that far away, man, we’re really not,” Adams said. “I want people to understand that. It might seem like it is, but we have to put our head down and keep grinding.”

Every team wants to have some momentum heading into a new season, but in reality, it doesn’t make a difference. Even when the Jets were playing some of their best football at the end of last season, it meant nothing for this season. Sometimes when a team is playing well for a stretch, it overshadows the problems that the team needs to address. The Jets are in that territory.

New York has numerous holes it needs to fill this offseason. The entire offensive line needs to be patched up. Gang Green also needs two starting cornerbacks. The Jets still lack an edge rusher and need a true No. 1 wide receiver to help out Sam Darnold.

“I think we’re not too far away,” Darnold said. “We do need to play more consistent football, especially on offense, but there are definitely some bright spots that we can continue to work on this offseason.”

It’s nice to see the team finally starting to put things together after a forgettable first half of the season. However, this little hot streak shouldn’t fool anybody. There are still going to be significant changes upcoming in the offseason despite the team’s performance over the last half of the season.

4 takeaways from the Jets’ bizarre win over the Dolphins

Jets Wire breaks down New York’s bizarre win over the Dolphins with four takeaways.

What a bizarre game that was.

The Jets got the job done against the Dolphins in Week 14, downing Miami 21-19 on a Sam Ficken field goal as time expired. The action was far from exhilarating despite the final minutes, but a win is a win.

Let’s take a look back at New York’s fifth win of the season with four takeaways from the game.

Darnold gets it done…sort of

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

Sam Darnold was not good in the second half. That’s not up for debate. However, despite his underwhelming half of football, he stepped up down the stretch and put the Jets in a position to win.

Darnold’s pitch and catch to Vyncint Smith essentially set up Sam Ficken’s game-winning field goal. The Jets got bailed out by the referees deciding to review defensive pass interference after their drive started going backward, but Darnold got them into Miami territory in the first place, nonetheless. That deserves some sort of acknowledgment.

Report: Jets RT Chuma Edoga out multiple weeks with MCL sprain

Jets rookie right tackle Chuma Edoga will be out for mutiple weeks after suffering a Grade 2 MCL Sprain in the Jets 34-3 win over Oakland.

Rookie right tackle Chuma Edoga left the Jets’ 34-3 win over the Raiders with a knee injury. Now, he’ll miss significant time.

Following the win, Edoga came into the locker room with a brace on his left leg, according to Connor Hughes of The Athletic. Edoga went for an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the injury

Now, the Jets will be without Edoga for an extended period of time due to a Grade 2 MCL sprain, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Edoga was the Jets’ third-round pick out of USC in the 2019 NFL draft. He took over as a starter in Week 5 and has played eight games at both tackle positions due to the Jets’ constant reshuffling on the offensive line.

The Jets have had to play musical chairs on the offensive line due to injuries. Ryan Kalil and Brian Winters are both out for the season, while Kelechi Osemele is no longer on the team.

With Edoga sidelined, Brandon Shell will slide back in at right tackle, while the banged-up Kelvin Beachum (ankle) will continue to man the left side. If he cannot go against Cincinnati in Week 13, Conor McDermott is the next man up on the Jets depth chart.

Jets G Brian Winters played through torn shoulder all season

Jets guard Brian Winters was playing through more than a dislocated shoulder this season.

According to the Daily News’ Manish Mehta, Winters tore the entire front part of his shoulder during the preseason. However, Winters played through it by wearing a brace that gave it some extra protection.

Winters re-dislocated his shoulder on Sunday against the Giants and is more likely out for the rest of the season. He might need surgery to repair his shoulder, but that has yet to be determined at this point.

The 28-year-old is the second-longest tenured Jet on the roster behind Bilal Powell. But injuries have derailed his career, as he’s only been able to play in three full seasons in seven years.

Sunday could have been Winters’ final game in a Jets uniform. He has one year left on his four-year contract, but his $7 million base salary is non-guaranteed. He also has a $500,000 roster bonus, so the Jets can cut him and wouldn’t be hit with any dead money.

Winters has always been a tough-nosed football player since the day he arrived in New York. But his play on the field hasn’t been what the Jets expect from him. With that and his latest injury in mind, the Jets are going to be in the market for a new left guard come March.
