NFL trade deadline: Jets monitoring cornerback market

Could the Jets make a trade for a cornerback before the deadline? They’re monitoring the market.

The Jets look to be sellers ahead of the Nov. 2 trade deadline, but that may not be the case when it comes to the cornerback position.

New York is one of a few teams that has “actively monitored” the cornerback market over the past few months, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Other teams include the Bills, Texans, Seahawks and Giants.

Fowler added that the Broncos have received interest in Kyle Fuller and Bryce Callahan, though Denver’s asking price was high in the preseason.

The cornerback position has been a hot topic for the Jets dating back to the offseason. Joe Douglas failed to sign any experienced players at the position, and there was concern about New York’s youthful secondary entering the summer. Those worries were quieted through the first four weeks of the season, as New York’s corners, led by second-year pro Bryce Hall, largely played well.

The young group was finally exploited Sunday in Gang Green’s Week 5 loss to Matt Ryan and the Falcons, though.

That collectively poor performance aside, the Jets do have some reason to be excited about the corners they already have. Hall, Michael Carter II and Brandin Echols have all shown promise, so it would be curious for New York to add a veteran corner now after committing to their youngsters in the preseason.

Report: Jets cut ties with Pierre Desir after just 9 games

The Jets released Pierre Desir after nine games with the team.

Pierre Desir’s career with the Jets left a lot to be desired.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Jets are releasing the cornerback after just nine games with the team. He will go on waivers. Any team that claims Desir will have to pick up his remaining salary.

Joe Douglas signed Desir to a one-year deal worth $5.5 million in the offseason. The plan was for Desir to be the Jets’ No. 1 cornerback, but he was far from one in his brief tenure with the team.

According to Pro Football Focus, Desir had a 47.8 overall grade this season, which ranks 71st among 75 qualified cornerbacks. Desir has been targeted 47 times this season and has allowed 35 receptions.

In nine games, Desir has registered 47 total tackles, eight pass defenses, three interceptions and one defensive touchdown. But his effort came into question last week against New England. Desir jogged after a Patriots wide receiver and it led to his benching for the final three minutes of the game.

It was not the first time Desir was benched this season.

Desir’s release will open up some more opportunities for rookie Bryce Hall and the recently acquired Corey Ballantine. Bless Austin will likely slide into the No. 1 cornerback spot.

The Desir signing was a big miss by Douglas. Clearly, Desir was supposed to be a short-term fix with a one-year deal, but he couldn’t even finish out his contract.

Jets claim CB Corey Ballentine off waivers from Giants

The Jets added some depth to their cornerback room Wednesday.

The Jets added some depth to their cornerback room Wednesday.

Gang Green announced that it claimed Corey Ballentine off waivers from the Giants. Ballentine played in nine games for Big Blue this season, but only started in two of them. He was the Giants’ second cornerback until he lost his job to Issac Yiadom. After that, he was mainly used on special teams by the Giants.

Ballantine has registered 16 total tackles this season. He also averaged 21.2 yards per kick return on nine tries for New York.

Ballentine was originally a sixth-round pick out of Washburn University in 2019. He played in 13 games in 2019 with two starts and recorded 26 total tackles, two pass defenses and one quarterback hit.

With the addition of Ballentine, the Jets now have a total of eight cornerbacks on the roster.

In other transaction news, the Jets re-signed quarterback Mike White to the practice squad.

Jets sign WR Josh Malone to active roster, place CB Arthur Maulet on IR

The Jets have signed Josh Malone to the active roster and placed Arthur Maulet on injured reserve.

After being called up from the practice squad twice, the Jets officially signed Josh Malone to the active roster.

New York announced on Tuesday that it has signed Malone to the 53-man roster and placed CB Arthur Maulet on injured reserve. In addition, the Jets released Paul Worrilow from their practice squad.

Under the new practice squad rules, the Jets were allowed to bring Malone up to the gameday roster twice and then send him back down to the practice squad without him being subject to waivers. Since Malone has played two games though, he was subject to waivers.

The Jets now have three healthy wide receivers on the active roster. Along with Malone, the Jets have Chris Hogan and Braxton Berrios. Jamison Crowder is still a question mark for this week with a hamstring injury, while Breshad Perriman is week-to-week with an ankle injury.

As for Maulet, he has to miss at least the next three games under the new injured reserve rules. So the Jets are down to four healthy cornerbacks with Quincy Wilson having a concussion.

The Jets could promote a cornerback from the practice squad to take Maulet’s spot. Javelin Guidry, Lamar Jackson and Zane Lewis are the three cornerbacks on the Jets’ practice squad.

CB Nate Hairston among Jets’ cuts

The Jets cut cornerback Nate Hairston after one season with the team.

It’s been a year and a week to the day that Nate Hairston was acquired by the Jets in a trade with the Colts. Now the cornerback’s time in New York is up.

Hairston was cut by the Jets on Saturday after just one season with the team. The move saves the Jets just over $2 million in cap space. New York traded a conditional sixth-round pick to the Colts in exchange for Hairston last summer.

Hairston played in 11 games with six starts last season. His playing time increased when Trumaine Johnson started to struggle and eventually got hurt. Hairston recorded 24 tackles, three pass defenses and one interception in 2019.

In training camp, Hairston primarily worked with the starters as the slot cornerback due to Brian Poole’s bout with dehydration, which kept him out for a couple of weeks.

The 26-year-old Hairston was originally a fifth-round pick by the Colts in 2017 out of Temple. He played in 27 games for Indianapolis with 11 starts, 65 tackles, six pass breakups and one interception in two seasons.

Report: Jets placed waiver claim on new Browns CB M.J. Stewart

The Jets submitted a waiver claim on M.J. Stewart.

The New York Jets made an attempt to beef up their cornerback depth through the waiver wire, but their target landed elsewhere.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Jets put a waiver claim on cornerback M.J. Stewart. Ultimately, Stewart ended up with the Browns because they had the higher waiver priority.

Stewart was a second-round pick out of North Carolina by the Buccaneers in the 2018 NFL Draft. He started out his rookie season as the fifth cornerback on the Bucs’ depth chart before making his first career start in Week 2. However, after injuring his foot, Stewart lost his starting job and never got it back.

In 2018, Stewart had 33 total tackles and three pass defenses. In 2019, Stewart recorded 35 tackles and two pass defenses in 10 games with one start.

The Buccaneers waived Stewart on August 6.

WATCH: Highlights of new Jets CB Bryce Hall

Here are highlights of new Jets cornerback Bryce Hall at Virginia.

The New York Jets addressed the cornerback position with Virginia’s Bryce Hall in the fifth round.

Hall’s draft stock fell dramatically after he sustained an ankle injury in his senior year that limited him to just six games. However, Hall has good size and length at 6-foot-1, 201 pounds. He also played wide receiver in high school; he has big hands. Hall had an outstanding junior season at Virginia, recording 21 pass breakups and two interceptions. In his four years at Virginia, Hall had 154 total tackles, four sacks, five interceptions and 38 pass breakups.

Here are Hall’s career highlights at Virginia:

Former Jets CB Darryl Roberts signs 1-year deal with Lions

Former Jets cornerback Darryl Roberts has agreed to a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions.

Former Jets cornerback Darryl Roberts has found a new home.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Roberts and the Detroit Lions have agreed to terms on a one-year deal. Roberts was released by the Jets about two weeks ago, which cleared $6 million in cap space for New York.

Roberts spent four seasons with Gang Green after originally being drafted by the Patriots in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft out of Marshall. He got limited time as a starter in 2016 and 2017 before starting a career-high 10 games in 2018. Roberts did so again in 2019, beginning the year as the second cornerback behind Trumaine Johnson. However, both struggled, failed to stay healthy and were cut this offseason.

In 56 career games with the Jets, Roberts recorded 155 total tackles, 27 pass breakups and three interceptions.

The biggest issue with Roberts in his four years was his ball awareness. Most of the time, Roberts was there to make a play on the ball, but couldn’t locate it. That allowed the receiver to make the catch and possibly break away for extra yardage.

As for the Jets cornerback situation, their current plan is to go with Pierre Desir at the No. 1 spot followed by Bless Austin at No. 2. The Jets could still go out and grab another cornerback in free agency to play behind Desir, though. There’s also always the draft.

Meanwhile, Brian Poole will lock down the slot for the second straight season.

Report: Jets sign CB Pierre Desir to 1-year deal

The Jets have signed cornerback Pierre Desir to a one-year deal.

The Jets have found their new starting cornerback in free agency.

According to The Athletic’s Connor Hughes, the Jets and cornerback Pierre Desir have agreed on a one-year deal. The terms of the contract have yet to be disclosed.

Desir spent the last three seasons in Indianapolis with the Colts. He has become more of a starter in the last two seasons, though, starting in 23 games.  In three seasons with the Colts, Desir had 119 total tackles, 26 pass breakups, five interceptions, one touchdown and two forced fumbles.

Before joining the Colts, Desir had stops with the Chargers and the Browns, the team he was originally drafted by in the fourth round in 2014 out of Lindenwood University. He was in Cleveland for two years and San Diego for one year.

The Jets were dying for some cornerback help with both Trumaine Johnson and Darryl Roberts off the roster. Surely, Desir will have a starting role right away, either as the No. 1 cornerback or the No. 2 cornerback. If the season were to start now, Desir would be the Jets’ No. 1 cornerback alongside Bless Austin.

Jets release CB Darryl Roberts, clear $6 million in cap space

The Jets have released cornerback Darryl Roberts after four seasons.

The Jets have released yet another one of their 2019 starting cornerbacks.

The team announced on Saturday that it has officially released cornerback Darryl Roberts after four seasons with the Jets. Roberts had a $2 million guarantee on Sunday, so the Jets had to make a decision before then. By cutting him, the team cleared $6 million in cap space.

Roberts joined the Jets in 2016 after spending one season with the Patriots, the team he was originally drafted by in 2015 out of Marshall. He impressed in a limited role in 2016 and 2017 with 56 total tackles, 14 pass breakups and one interception.

Roberts earned more of a solidified role in the Jets secondary in 2018 when he started 10 games. He played well once again with 41 total tackles, seven pass breakups and one interception.

Last March, Roberts was rewarded for his efforts with a three-year, $18 million contract extension with the Jets. However, Roberts struggled as a starter in 2019, recording 58 total tackles, six pass defenses and one interception. The biggest knock on his style of play was his awareness for finding the football. He’d always seemed to be in position to make a play, but couldn’t locate the football.

Now the Jets have to replace two starting cornerbacks with Roberts and Trumaine Johnson off the roster. Bless Austin could be in line for a starting gig, but the Jets will have to explore external options in order to shore up the cornerback room.
