Lions’ 2020 free agent signings receive their jersey numbers

The Detroit Lions’ 2020 free agent signings have received their jersey numbers and they are all listed here.

The Detroit Lions have revealed the jersey numbers for the players they signed recently during the 200 free agency period.

The rookies already received their numbers, some of which are bound to change before the regular season begins.

Quick notes:

Chase Daniel, who wore the number 4 for the Chicago Bears, will once again don the number in Detroit. The number, famously worn by longtime kicker Jason Hanson, has not been used in Detroit during the regular season since his retirement.

One number that the Lions don’t seem ready to put back into circulation is  81, famously worn by Detroit’s all-time great Calvin Johnson. Geronimo Allison, who has worn that number throughout the entirety of his pro career, will instead wear 18.

With a shortage of available numbers suitable for the position, cornerback Desmond Trufant will wear number 23, which was recently worn by three-time Pro Bowler and former All-Pro Darius Slay.

Linebacker Christian Sam, who wore number 59 last season, gave the number to newly-signed Reggie Ragland. Ragland has donned that number throughout his entire professional career. Sam now wears the number 54.

Jamie Collins will continue wearing 58, which he previously held in New England.

Offensive lineman Russell Bodine will wear 60, his number from his days with the North Carolina Tar Heels.

Nose tackle Danny Shelton has worn the number 71 since his high school days and will continue to wear it in Detroit.

Sporting number 72 for the Lions is Halapoulivaati Vaitai, who also wore the number for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Nicholas Williams will also wear a number he wore for a previous team. He held 97 for the Bears over the last two seasons.

Here is a full list of newly-signed players and their jersey numbers:

  • QB Chase Daniel – 4
  • WR Geremy Davis – 12
  • WR Geronimo Allison – 18
  • CB Desmond Trufant – 23
  • S Duron Harmon – 26
  • CB Darryl Roberts – 29
  • S Jayron Kearse – 32
  • CB Tony McRae – 34
  • LB Elijah Lee – 55
  • LB Jamie Collins – 58
  • LB Reggie Ragland – 59
  • IOL Russell Bodine – 60
  • DL Danny Shelton – 71
  • OT Halapoulivaati Vaitai – 72
  • TE Matt Sokol – 84
  • DL Nick Williams – 97

Lions reveal initial jersey numbers for rookies, but some will have to change

Lions reveal initial jersey numbers for rookies, but Jeff Okudah and D’Andre Swift will need to change their first numbers

The Lions are one of the last teams to reveal the jersey numbers for the rookie class of 2020. On Wednesday the team offered the initial list of what numbers the rookies will don when they finally take the field. It comes with an asterisk for the first two picks, however.

The first look at the Lions drafted rookies and their jersey numbers, from Tim Twentyman of the Lions:

Don’t go ordering jerseys for Okudah or Swift just yet, however. Neither player will be able to wear those initial numbers once the season starts based on NFL rules. Single-digit numbers are reserved for quarterbacks, punters and kickers only.

Okudah and Swift will pick their lasting numbers later, once more roster moves have been made. That’s not uncommon for prominent rookies across the league.

RB Anthony McFarland means no ‘disrespect’ taking Le’Veon Bell’s number

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Anthony McFarland explains why he chose No. 26.

One of the first items of business for NFL rookies is to choose a jersey number. But it’s not just a number. It’s an identity, something that players will wear proudly during all of the ups and downs in the journey of their professional careers.

Running back Anthony McFarland, Jr. didn’t get the number he initially wanted. Instead, he displayed a selfless act and deferred No. 25 to his former Terrapins teammate and current Steelers teammate, Antoine Brooks, Jr. After all, that was Brooks’ number when they were together at Maryland.

The next available number was 26.

While it was last worn by linebacker Mark Barron, who was cut this offseason, it was most recently made famous in Pittsburgh by the legendary Le’Veon Bell.

McFarland was playing high school ball at DeMatha Catholic when Bell first came on the scene in Pittsburgh.

“To me, wearing 2-6, I’ve always been a big fan of Le’Veon Bell,” said McFarland via a video conference call with media Saturday.

“He’s always been the best running back in the league to me, ever since I been watching him when I was in college and when I was in high school,” he said.

Since No. 26 is synonymous with Bell, there comes with it a certain pressure to live up to the presence he once had in Pittsburgh. But McFarland, knowing he has a lot of work ahead of him to earn a role in a crowded backfield, made it clear he’s not trying to be anyone but himself.

“I didn’t want people to think it was anything like ‘Ooh, I wanted to be better than Le’Veon or anything like that,” said McFarland.

“That’s not the type of person I am.  I idolize him, I study his game, I study his film. It’s definitely me looking up at him and not a sign of disrespect.”

24 new Broncos players choose their jersey numbers

Two dozen new Broncos players have picked their jersey numbers.

The Denver Broncos announced Tuesday that 24 new players have picked their jersey numbers. Here’s a quick look at the numbers picked by each player — fans should note that these numbers are subject to change.

NFL Draft Class

WR Jerry Jeudy: 10
WR KJ Hamler: 13
CB Michael Ojemudia: 23
C Lloyd Cushenberry III: 79
DL McTelvin Agim: 94
TE Albert Okwuegbunam: 85
LB Justin Strnad: 40
G Netane Muti: 73
WR Tyrie Cleveland: 86
OLB Derrek Tuszka: 48

Jeudy will wear Emmanuel Sanders’ old number and Tuszka will wear Shaq Barrett’s old number. We have a feeling Hamler’s No. 13 jersey might change between now and Week 1.

Undrafted Free Agents

DB Essang Bassey: 34
RB LeVante Bellamy: 32
S Douglas Coleman III: 35
WR Kendall Hinton: 2
WR Zimari Manning: 1
QB Riley Neal: 5
T Hunter Watts: 77

If Hinton or Manning make the team, they will have to change their jersey numbers to something between 10-19 or 80-89. Because rosters have 90 players during the offseason, usual number rules don’t apply right now.

Neal apparently got No. 5 from punter Sam Martin, who changed to No. 6. Martin can switch back to No. 5 if Neal doesn’t make the team.

New Arrivals

DL Christian Covington: 56
RB Jeremy Cox: 39
LB Tre’ Crawford: 91
LS Wes Farnsworth: 42
NT Joel Heath: 95
OL Tyler Jones: 63
S Kahani Smith: 39

The Broncos are still hoping to start training camp on time in late July.

WR Chase Claypool picks Steelers jersey number

Wide receiver Chase Claypool, the Steelers first pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, announced the number he’ll be wearing.

Wide receiver Chase Claypool, the Steelers first pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, is the first of the class to choose his jersey number.

Drum roll, please…

Claypool will be sporting jersey No. 11.

He donned No. 83 at Notre Dame and used the hashtag 8plus3 when he announced his new number on Twitter.

With No. 7 throwing Claypool the ball, I’m sensing a lot of 7-Eleven references from fans and announcers this season.
