New England Patriots QB Mac Jones wears unique number during practice

Former Alabama QB Mac Jones has yet to receive an official jersey number from the Patriots, so for now, he is wearing No. 50, which is …

Former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones was the final quarterback drafted in the first round. He was selected by the New England Patriots at No. 15 overall and has not stopped making headlines since long before the draft process began.

This time, he’s in the news because of his jersey number.

While most of his former teammates that are now in the NFL have been given their respective jersey numbers, Jones has not.

Waiting this long is not atypical of the Patriots, but it’s still funny to see.

In a recent picture, Jones was spotted wearing No. 50. However, that number is not one quarterbacks are permitted to wear under the new, expanded number rule. This number would be available to Jones if he was a linebacker, offensive lineman or defensive lineman.

Blake Bortles to change jersey numbers in Green Bay

The No. 5 jersey is retired in Green Bay, so former Jacksonville quarterback Blake Bortles had to shake things up.

Former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback and recent Green Bay Packers signee Blake Bortles will be donning a new jersey number in 2021. The No. 5 jersey, which he wore in college and at every previous step he’s made in the NFL with Jacksonville, the Los Angeles Rams, and Denver Broncos, is retired by the Packers in honor of the late Paul Hornung, the 1961 NFL MVP.

Bortles had to change things up, and he will now be wearing No. 9 for Green Bay. The jersey was previously occupied by kicker J.J. Molson, but he swapped to No. 35 this offseason.

Bortles is one of three quarterbacks on the Packers’ roster other than Aaron Rodgers, who seems to want out. The other quarterbacks on the roster areĀ Jordan Love, the team’s first round pick last year who didn’t appear in any games and is at least one source of Rodgers’ frustration, and Kurt Benkert, a fourth-year player who hasn’t appeared in a game.

Love is the likely candidate to back up Rodgers, assuming the latter remains on the Packers’ roster until the beginning of the season. But Bortles will compete with the second-year passer from Utah State for that job, and at the very least, he should be able to crack the 53-man roster as a third-string quarterback.

Rams reveal new jersey numbers for Woods, Williams, Fuller and Jackson

Robert Woods is going back to his college number, as are DeSean Jackson and Jordan Fuller.

It didnā€™t take long for several Los Angeles Rams players to take advantage of the NFLā€™s loosened rules pertaining to jersey numbers. Running backs, defensive backs, wide receivers and tight ends can all wear single-digit numbers, while linebackers and defensive linemen also have more choices thanks to the new rule.

On Tuesday, the Rams announced four jersey number changes for marquee players, but Jalen Ramsey wasnā€™t among them. Here are the changes being made by Robert Woods, DeSean Jackson, Darious Williams and Jordan Fuller.

  • Woods: 17 to 2
  • Jackson: 11 to 1
  • Williams: 31 to 11
  • Fuller: 32 to 4

The Rams also shared photoshopped pictures of each player in his new number, and they look absolutely clean.

Woods, Jackson and Fuller all wore their new numbers in college. Woods has even worn No. 2 since high school. Itā€™s unclear how he beat out Ramsey for the number, as both players were vying for it, but perhaps his history of wearing 2 helped.

Williams wore No. 1 at UAB, but with Jackson also wearing it at Cal, Williams will settle for No. 11. That allows Jackson to wear No. 1 after initially planning to wear 11 with the Rams.

It appears Ramsey will be sticking with No. 20, at least for now. He was also considering a change to No. 5.

Elsewhere, Gay will be changing his number from 1 to 8, while Austin MacGinnis will go from 8 to 18. So there’s a trick-down effect from the change made by Jackson.

LOOK: Jaylen Waddle gets his Miami Dolphins jersey number

Former Alabama WR Jaylen Waddle received his official NFL jersey number today from the Miami Dolphins. He was drafted No. 6 overall.

Former Alabama wide receiver Jaylen Waddle was selected No. 6 overall in the 2021 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins. Today, he received his jersey number.

Waddle was the second wide receiver selected in the draft, and the first of 10 Crimson Tide players taken.

In a social media post published by the Dolphins today, the new numbers were shown for both rookies and players who switched numbers from the 2020 season.

The former Alabama star will keep the number he’s worn since highschool, No. 17.

The number was free for the taking, as no one on the 2020 roster had No. 17.

Tua Tagovailoa will look to complete passes to Waddle, as he wears the same number he did when they played together at Alabama.

LOOK: Najee Harris gets his Pittsburgh Steelers jersey number

Former Alabama RB Najee Harris posts a picture to Instagram featuring his new Pittsburgh Steelers jersey number.

Former Alabama running back Najee Harris was seemingly a unanimously agreed upon first-round selection heading into draft night. When it came time for the 2021 NFL draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers made it official by selecting him No. 24 overall.

Harris, who wore No. 22 while at Alabama, will wear the same number for the Steelers, as he put on display in a recent Instagram post.

The California native will move to the east coast and play a key role in an offense loaded with weapons like JuJu Smith-Schuster and Chase Claypool.

His ability to not only run the ball well, but also be a pass-catcher out of the backfield makes him a very versatile offensive threat.

LOOK: DeVonta Smith gets his Philadelphia Eagles jersey number

Former Alabama WR DeVonta Smith received his NFL jersey number from the Philadelphia Eagles just a day after he was drafted by the team.

Former Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith was selected No. 10 overall in the 2021 NFL draft by the Phildelphia Eagles. After just one day of being a professional wide receiver, he has received his official jersey number.

While Smith was originally seen as the top-tier receiver that could have been the first of his position off the board, he nearly slid out of the top 10 and was the third wide receiver selected – the two taken before him were LSU’s Ja’Marr Chase to Cincinnati and Jaylen Waddle to Miami.

The Eagles traded up from No. 12 to No. 10 to secure the Heisman winner, and they wasted no time in getting him his jersey.

Thanks to the NFL’s new rule that changes the jersey number restrictions, Smith will get to continue wearing No. 6, just like he did while playing for the Crimson Tide.

Smith will get to catch passes from former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts and will have another Crimson Tide product, Landon Dickerson, join him as a member of the 2021 draft class.

Derwin James, Kenneth Murray among Chargers who could change jersey numbers

NFL owners passed the rule to expand eligible jersey numbers for certain positions.

Changes are coming.

The NFL ownersĀ approved a rule change on Wednesday proposed by theĀ ChiefsĀ that loosens jersey number rules.

Before, running backs, wide receivers, linebackers, tight ends and defensive backs had to wear uniform numbers within a certain numerical range. Now, they will will now be eligible to wear single digits.

Previous rules

  • QB:Ā 1-19
  • RB:Ā 20-49
  • WR/TE:Ā 10-19, 80-89
  • OL:Ā 50-79
  • DL:Ā 50-79, 90-99
  • LB:Ā 40-59, 90-99
  • CB/S:Ā 20-49
  • K/P:Ā 1-19

New rules

  • QB:Ā 1-19
  • RB/WR/TE:Ā 1-49, 80-89
  • OL:Ā 50-79
  • DL:Ā 50-79, 90-99
  • LB:Ā 1-59, 90-99
  • CB/S:Ā 1-49
  • K/P:Ā 1-19

Linebacker Kenneth Murray and safety Derwin James are two notable players likely to make the switch, resorting back to numbers that they wore in college.

Murray, who wore 56 in his rookie season, would change to No. 9 – the number he wore at Oklahoma. Meanwhile, James, who rocks 33, would switch to No. 3, which he rocked at Florida State.

Texas quarterback Casey Thompson changes jersey number

Texas quarterback Casey Thompson will be taking former signal-caller Sam Ehlinger’s jersey number.

With spring practice underway, there is a quarterback competition taking center stage in Austin. Casey Thompson and Hudson Card will be squaring off to be the starter on Sept. 4 against Louisiana.

If Thompson ends up winning, another No. 11 will be the starting quarterback for the University of Texas.

After wearing No. 8 his first three seasons on campus, Thompson has decided to switch his jersey number. He will be following up Sam Ehlinger, one of the greatest Texas quarterbacks of all time. It seems weird to have another No. 11 quarterback just after Ehlinger’s departure for the NFL.

Texas Football announced the number change via Instagram on Tuesday.

The quarterback competition will now be between No. 1 and No. 11. With spring practice underway for the first time under Steve Sarkisian, it will be the most discussed story for seven months. Thompson will come in as the favorite to win, but Card certainly has an opportunity to overtake him.

As of now, no other player has taken over Thompson’s No. 8. Punter Ryan Bujcevski, who is out of spring practice with an ACL injury, sports it for the special teams unit. No one wears it on the defensive side of the ball.

DeAndre Baker will wear No. 30 jersey with Chiefs

Baker will wear the jersey number most recently worn by Adrian Colbert during the preseason.

[jwplayer 9ABjQwGb-ThvAeFxT]

The newest cornerback on the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad has officially been assigned a jersey number.

According to the Chiefsā€™ roster on their media portal, DeAndre Baker will wear the No. 30 with Kansas City. Baker previously wore No. 27 with his old NFL team, the New York Giants. That number is currently occupied by Rashad Fenton. Baker’s college number, 18, isn’t an eligible number for a defensive back in the NFL. He also wore No. 2 in high school, which isn’t eligible. There’s really no telling if there is any significance to his choice here.

Adrian Colbert was technically the last player to wear No. 30 for the Chiefs. Before that, it was second-year CB Alex Brown, who is currently on injured reserve after injuring suffering a knee injury this offseason.

The number hasn’t been great to Kansas City in the past. It has mostly been worn by role players, especially in the defensive secondary. Some players that come to mind include Jamell Fleming, Josh Shaw, Jalil Brown and Steven Terrell. The most recent success story wearing the No. 30 is none other than former Chiefs RB Charcandrick West. He was with the Chiefs from 2014-2018 after joining the team as an undrafted free agent out of Abilene Christian.

All-in-all this seems like a good number selection for Baker. It’s not like he had many options to choose from with 12 defensive backs on the roster between the practice squad and the 53-man roster.
