Broncos RB Jaleel McLaughlin explains why he didn’t change his jersey number

Broncos RB Jaleel McLaughlin wore 10 in high school then 20 and 8 in college. That adds up to wearing No. 38 in the NFL.

It is game week for the Denver Broncos.

The Broncos will face off against the Las Vegas Raiders this Sunday, and expectations are raised under new coach Sean Payton, with the playoffs now a clear objective.

Ahead of Sunday’s season opener, eight Denver players have elected to change their jersey numbers for 2023.

Broncos rookie receiver Marvin Mims has changed his preseason number of No. 83 to No. 19, and cornerback Tremon Smith will now wear No. 1 after previously wearing No. 23.

While six other Broncos players have elected to change their numbers, one player chose not to: running back Jaleel McLaughlin.

McLaughlin went undrafted in the 2023 NFL draft after finishing his career at Youngtown State. McLaughlin ended his career as college football’s all-time leading rusher.

But his reason for sticking with No. 38 is a unique one.

McLaughlin’s reason makes a lot of sense. His story is unique and it was probably a lot of hard work for him to get to this spot in his life. We’re excited to see No. 38 in action this fall.

Broncos WR Tim Patrick changes jersey number while on IR

Broncos WR Tim Patrick has switched from No. 81 to No. 12, the number he wore in college.

Eight Denver Broncos players changed their jersey numbers on Monday and three new members of the practice squad were assigned numbers as well.

Among the changes: Broncos veteran cornerback Tremon Smith switched from No. 23 to No. 1 and rookie wide receiver Marvin Mims switched from No. 83 to No. 19. Perhaps one of the most notable changes flew under the radar, though.

Denver receiver Tim Patrick, who is currently on injured reserve, also changed his number. Patrick switched from No. 81 — which he has worn since he joined the team in 2017 — to No. 12.

The number change won’t be noticed by fans this year because Patrick is set to miss the entire 2023 season on IR, and (at the time of this writing) no other players have switched to No. 81.

It’s an interesting decision from Patrick. He wore No. 12 while playing college football at Utah, but he wore No. 81 while catching 104 passes for 1,476 yards and 11 touchdowns from 2020-2021 with the Broncos.

Patrick missed all of last season with a torn ACL and he’s set to miss this season with a torn Achilles. Perhaps the number change was promoted by recent injuries while wearing No. 81.

Whatever the reason may be, Tim Patrick now wears No. 12.

Vikings’ 53-man roster by jersey number ahead of Week 1

Multiple players changed their numbers after the initial 53-man roster was announced

After a long and grueling training camp, the Minnesota Vikings have set their 53-man roster going into week one against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

With week one approaching, there is a lot of excitement building, especially with all the young players looking to be major contributors in the 2023 season.

Once the first roster cuts were made, multiple rookies and veterans decided to change up their jersey number to a better number for their position.

Here is an updated 53-man roster complete with jersey numbers.

LOOK: Wisconsin transfer G A.J. Storr reveals this season’s look

Jersey number revealed for AJ Storr:

Wisconsin released the new jersey numbers for its incoming freshmen earlier this week. The program’s class of 2023, led by top center Gus Yalden, is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 57 class in the nation. With Greg Gard’s team lacking for depth at times over the last few seasons, this group figures to make an impact from day one.

The other offseason addition made by Gard and his staff is undoubtedly the most significant of them all. It’s St. John’s transfer guard A.J. Storr. The rising sophomore already showed promise in his first collegiate season, and now enters a system where he could become a focal point of the offense.

All that, and he is already the most athletic player on the team.

Wisconsin released Friday that Storr will wear No. 2 this season in Madison:

Storr brings previously-mentioned athleticism to the Badgers, in addition to high-percentage shooting and tons of offensive upside. Wisconsin doesn’t often get out during the break and throw down highlight-reel dunks. A.J. Storr changes that instantly.

Jimmy Graham reveals his New Orleans Saints jersey number in message to fans

WATCH: Jimmy Graham revealed his New Orleans Saints jersey number in a heartfelt message to fans

Was there ever any doubt? Jimmy Graham surprised New Orleans Saints fans by re-signing with the team that gave him his start on Tuesday, and revealed that he’s going to be wearing the same jersey number he used before: No. 80. The number had been issued to undrafted wide receiver Shaquan Davis, but he’ll be using something else.

Graham addressed his return to Saints fans in a video from the team facility shared on social media: “Hey guys I’m back home. Incredible, incredible to be here back in this building with the guys. Can’t wait to see you at training camp, can’t wait to see you in the Superdome, looking forward to every second, every moment of it. Love you guys.”

So take those jerseys out of the closet and dust them off. It sure sounds like Graham is here to make the most of this opportunity.

Rashid Shaheed won’t be the Saints’ most underappreciated player much longer

Rashid Shaheed won’t be the Saints’ most underappreciated player much longer. If he can continue to play at the level we saw last year, everyone will know his name:

The NFL is full of underappreciated players, some of whom were talked up by CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr — including New Orleans Saints wide receiver Rashid Shaheed. Recruited as a returns specialist coming out of school, Shaheed became a big-play threat for a Saints offense that badly needed one last season, and now he’s riding a lot of hype going into his second season. Here’s what Benjamin had to say about Shaheed:

“Give the Saints a ton of credit for finding a player like Shaheed, who has a cap number of just $870,000 in 2023. An undrafted free agent out of Weber State, Shaheed was a deep ball threat in his rookie season, averaging 17.4 yards per catch in 12 games (28 catches, 488 yards, two touchdowns). He also averaged 14.3 yards per carry (on just four carries) with a touchdown while finishing with 1,058 all-purpose yards.

Shaheed was tremendous value for the Saints — and his speed is one of the best-kept secrets in the league. He’ll be an excellent No. 3 wide receiver for New Orleans in 2023, but don’t be surprised if he elevates his status.”

2023 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for Shaheed. He’s stepping into a bigger role in the offense as the No. 3 receiver behind Chris Olave and Michael Thomas and his arrow is trending up now that his coaches know how to best use his talents. He’s switched back to his college jersey number and is embracing the opportunity in front of him.

It shouldn’t take long for Shaheed and Carr to strike up a connection. If he can continue to play at the level we saw in the back half of the 2022 season, he won’t be underappreciated for much longer.

Brandon Miller, Noah Clowney show off their jersey numbers

Alabama basketball shares Brandon Miller and Noah Clowney’s new NBA numbers

Last Thursday, [autotag]Brandon Miller[/autotag] and [autotag]Noah Clowney[/autotag] became the first duo of Alabama basketball players to be selected in the first round of the NBA draft since 1995 when Jason Caffey and Antonio McDyess did it. The Charlotte Hornets selected Miller and the Brooklyn Nets chose Clowney.

However, the similarities don’t stop there as Miller and McDyess were both the No. 2 overall picks, the highest in program history. Caffey was then selected 20th overall in 1995 while Clowney went 21st overall this year, resulting in nearly identical drafts 28 years apart.

Today, Alabama basketball shared pictures to social media of Clowney and Miller both in their new uniforms and NBA numbers. Miller will wear No. 24 for the Hornets while Clowney will wear No. 21 for the Nets. The 2023-2024 NBA schedule has not been released yet, but both the Nets and Hornets are in the Eastern Conference and will face off at least three times next season.

Broncos give Brandon McManus’ old jersey number to a cornerback

Broncos cornerback K’Waun Williams is switching to jersey No. 8, which was previously worn by kicker Brandon McManus from 2014-2022.

NFL teams move on quickly.

Denver Broncos cornerback K’Waun Williams has switched from jersey No. 21 to jersey No. 8, the team announced Tuesday. That number, of course, was previously worn by kicker Brandon McManus from 2014-2022.

McManus was cut by the Broncos last month. He ranks second on the team’s all-time scoring list and was a key member of the club’s Super Bowl 50 win following the 2015 season.

Thanks for the memories, Brandon. Here’s No. 8, K’Waun.

In related number news, Denver guard/center Will Fuller has switched from No. 55 to No. 51. The two previous numbers worn by Willians and Fuller — 21 and 55 — are now available for other players.

The most significant number news for the Broncos this offseason is that outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper will wear No. 0. Cooper will mark just the second player in franchise history to have a zero on his uniform, joining former fullback Johnny Olszewski (1962).

Fans should note that all numbers are subject to change during the offseason. Numbers will be finalized when the 53-man roster is set in August.

First look at Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie in new jersey number

The #Chiefs shared a brief glimpse of CB Trent McDuffie sporting his new jersey number during the team’s media day.

[connatix div_id=”3f8b015acdd24c648befc5d5dac47469″ player_id=”afe1e038-d3c2-49c0-922d-6511a229f69c” cid=”7cbcea0d-4ce2-4c75-9a8d-fbe02a192c24″]

Kansas City Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie is set to wear a new jersey number in 2023 and the team just shared a first glimpse of him in that uniform for the first time.

The former 2022 first-round draft pick wore No. 21 during his rookie season, but with Juan Thornhill’s departure this offseason, he decided to switch back to his college jersey number. The No. 22 has special meaning to McDuffie as it was the jersey worn by his brother, who tragically passed away almost nine years ago. McDuffie was actually assigned that jersey number in college at Washington without asking for it, which made it all the more special for him.

With the Chiefs’ media day arriving on Monday, McDuffie finally got a chance to pose in his new jersey for the first time. He’s been spotted on the sidelines wearing the number during the team’s OTAs, but this is the first time that he’s been seen wearing it with pads and a full uniform.

You can check out the brief clip at the top of the page or over on any of the team’s official social media channels.

Cowboys safety Jayron Kearse will not wear No. 0 after all

From @ToddBrock24f7: After previously announcing the switch, Kearse says “logistical things” will keep him in his familiar No. 27 this season.

Change of plans; Jayron Kearse won’t have a change of jersey numbers in 2023.

The Cowboys safety had been previously announced as the first player in franchise history who would wear the number 0 after a new league rule allowing it was approved in March.

But during Thursday’s OTA practice session, several reporters noticed that Kearse was still sporting his No. 27 jersey. The 29-year-old confirmed to media members after the team walkthrough that he’d be staying in that jersey for the upcoming season.

“When you see a ballgame in September, I’m going to be 27,” Kearse said. “I’m wearing 27.”

So what happened?

“There were some logistical things that we weren’t able to work out.”

It’s not clear what those logistical things might have been. Existing rules stipulate that a player wishing to make a change to his jersey number must first buy out the entire remaining unsold inventory of his old number; whether that was the case for Kearse is unknown.

Linebacker Micah Parsons had also expressed interest in wearing the No. 0 jersey back in March, but Fox San Antonio KABB reporter Chuck Miketinac tweeted that Parsons told him he’s not sure what the team will do with the number this season.
