Report: Pittsburgh Steelers interview Texas A&M alumnus Jerrod Johnson for OC vacancy

According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the Steelers interviewed Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson on Wednesday for their vacancy.

A former Texas A&M starting quarterback may be the next offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, the Steelers interviewed Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson on Friday for their vacancy. Pittsburgh fired Matt Canada on Nov. 21, marking the first time since 1941 that the Steelers made a mid-season coaching change.

Per reports, Johnson interviewed for the same position with the New Orleans Saints and Philadelphia Eagles earlier this week. Before suiting up for six NFL teams during his playing career, Johnson made history in College Station.

When he graduated, the Houston native held two Texas A&M program records with the most yards passing (8,011) and total offensive yards (8,888) all-time. Kellen Mond now holds both records and Johnson is third in total yards behind Mond and Johnny Manziel.

Johnson got his start in coaching with the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 under the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. He served in the same position with the Indianapolis Colts in 2019 before being elevated to an offensive quality control coach for the next two seasons. Johnson served as assistant quarterbacks coach on the Minnesota Vikings in 2022 before being hired by Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans prior to this season.

Given the success of Ohio State alumnus, rookie CJ Stroud, under the guidance of Johnson, the interviews will continue to roll in for the former Aggie.

Patriots ramp up offensive coordinator search with two more interviews

Add two more names to the Patriots’ offensive coordinator search

The New England Patriots are starting to ramp things up with their offensive coordinator search with two more candidates reportedly being interviewed for the job.

Per NFL on CBS’ Jonathan Jones, the Patriots have interviewed Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Thomas Brown and Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson.

Brown spent time as an assistant head coach and running backs coach for the Los Angeles Rams, during their Super Bowl run in the 2021 season. He then joined the rebuilding Panthers in 2023 as an offensive coordinator.

Meanwhile, Johnson has experience working with multiple teams in various roles, including the diversity coaching fellowship, offensive quality control coach, assistant quarterbacks coach and quarterbacks coach.

Strictly from the Patriots’ perspective, Brown is the more interesting candidate of the two due to the team interviewing multiple coaches from the Sean McVay tree in Los Angeles.

It hints at a clear direction of where Patriots coach Jerod Mayo could potentially go with the offense.

Steelers interviewing Texans QB coach for OC vacancy

The Steelers are interviewing Jerrod Johnson.

According to NFL reporter Tom Pelissero, the Pittsburgh Steelers are interviewing Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson for their offensive coordinator vacancy.

Johnson gained a ton of notoriety in 2023 for the work he did with Houston quarterback C.J. Stroud. Stroud was the best rookie quarterback in the league in 2023 and one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.

2023 was Johnson’s only season as the Texans quarterbacks coach and he has fast-tracked his NFL career thanks to his knowledge and ability to maximize and develop talent.

Johnson played in the NFL for eight seasons after going undrafted out of Texas A&M. The Steelers are focusing their attention on replacing Matt Canada with a new offensive coordinator who can innovate and get the Steelers quarterback position on track.

A former Texas A&M starting quarterback may be the next offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles.

According to ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Eagles interviewed Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson on Wednesday for their vacancy. Philadelphia fired Brian Johnson on Tuesday.

Johnson reportedly interviewed for the New Orleans Saints OC vacancy earlier this week as well. He played at Texas A&M from 2006 to 2010, starting under center for his final three seasons.

Before suiting up for six NFL teams during his playing career, Johnson made history in College Station. When he graduated, the Houston native held two Texas A&M program records with the most yards passing (8,011) and total offensive yards (8,888) all-time. Browns Insider believes Texans Jerrod Johnson is the favorite for OC position

The Texans quarterback coach could be the next OC in Cleveland

The search for the next offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns might have a front-runner. According to insider Mary Kay Cabot, Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson, who will interview with the team Tuesday, could be the front-runner.

“He’s already been strongly endorsed by Deshaun Watson’s friend and Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, and Watson’s longtime personal quarterbacks coach Quincy Avery.”

It is clear that Kevin Stefanski is looking for a fresh voice to help the offense shape around Deshaun Watson and if Johnson has his support the move makes sense. What CJ Stroud has done this year was fun to watch and Johnson has been part of the rookie’s success. The offense that Johnson helped run with offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik is exactly the type of offense the Browns likely want to and should run next season.
The team will have Johnson in the building on Tuesday and if he is the front runner they should make sure he doesn’t leave town as he has interest from other teams. Finding a way to get Watson back to his Texans form is crucial for the team in 2024 and Johnson is a rising star amongst the coaching ranks.

Titans head coach news could have big ripple effects for Saints

Bengals QB coach Dan Pitcher has an interview scheduled with the Saints, but another opportunity just opened up with the Titans hiring Brian Callahan as head coach:

Every head coach change in the NFL creates ripple effects that are felt by other teams around the league, and the Tennessee Titans’ decision is a good example of that. The Titans are hiring Brian Callahan as their next head coach — and that move could hurt the New Orleans Saints’ own personnel plans for 2024.

Callahan previously worked as the Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator, and the Bengals have an obvious candidate to replace him already on staff in quarterbacks coach Dan Pitcher. The problem for the Saints is that Pitcher is on their list of candidates to interview for their own offensive coordinator opening. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Pitcher already scheduled an in-person interview with the Saints for Thursday after meeting with a few other teams. He’s already spoken with the Saints in an introductory virtual interview per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill.

But that second sit-down interview may never come to pass if Pitcher would rather stay in Cincinnati and take a promotion (or follow Callahan to Tennessee). It’s too soon to say whether that’s actually going to happen. At the same time, it’s a very realistic possibility.

And that’s a tough break for New Orleans. They swung at a couple of high-profile candidates and haven’t yet made contact. Shane Waldron is joining the Chicago Bears. Jerrod Johnson interviewed with the Saints on Monday, but not even getting a chance to speak with Pitcher in person would be disappointing. Hopefully Pitcher sticks to his commitments and gives the Saints a fair shot. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Saints interviewing Texans QB coach Jerrod Johnson on Monday

The Saints are interviewing Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson on Monday for their vacant offensive coordinator position:

A couple of teams will be meeting with Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson this week; KPRC 2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson reports that the New Orleans Saints will interview Johnson remotely on Monday before he travels to speak with Cleveland Browns brass in person on Tuesday.

Some fans might worry about Johnson’s first meeting with the Saints being virtual instead of face-to-face, but this is common practice around the league. Saints linebackers coach Michael Hodges joined a Zoom interview with the New England Patriots last week. If these initial conversations go well they can lead to second, more-thorough interviews in person, as was the case for Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, per NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe.

Still, it goes to show that Johnson is a coveted candidate. He’s done a great job preparing C.J. Stroud for life in the NFL and coaching up the Offensive Rookie of the Year favorite. He’s known as a sharp football mind with a passion for teaching his players the intricacies of the game.

“I see myself as a teacher. My biggest thing is I want to teach,” Johnson told Wilson earlier this year. “Whatever is needed of the players in the room, from Case Keenum, to Davis Mills, to C.J., whatever I can do to teach and give them whatever they need, I try to be transparent and open and honest with them. It’s a joy to coach them.”

That’s exactly what the Saints need to get their offense right and maximize Derek Carr’s skills. A stronger attention to detail and eye for coaching up young players like Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, and Kendre Miller is going to be important for whoever earns the offensive coordinator job. Being able to connect with Carr and help him excel (and, critically, avoiding the mistake-prone start we saw from him last season) is critically important. We’ll see how things develop after Johnson goes through this round of meetings with the Saints and other teams.

Report: New Orleans Saints request permission to interview Texas A&M alumnus Jerrod Johnson for OC vacancy

According to CBS lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones, Aggies alumnus and Texans’ QB coach Jerrod Johnson is interviewing for the Saints vacancy.

A former Texas A&M starting quarterback may be the next offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.

According to CBS lead NFL insider Jonathan Jones, the Saints have requested permission from the Houston Texans to interview their quarterbacks coach, Jerrod Johnson, for the vacancy. He played at Texas A&M from 2006 to 2010, starting under center for his final three seasons.

Browns to interview Texans’ QB coach Jerrod Johnson for vacant OC job

The former NFL quarterback will meet with the Browns this week

The search for a new offensive coordinator in Cleveland will continue this week as Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson comes to town for an interview.

This move would make sense as Johnson has played a part in rookie quarterback CJ Stroud’s success in Houston this year. He has worked closely with offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik who has completely turned around the Texans offense this year. When you look at the type of offense the Texans run you see the same things the Browns want to do with Deshaun Watson in 2024.

Johnson started his coaching career, after bouncing from team to team as a quarterback, with the San Francisco 49ers in 2017. He worked with DeMeco Ryans in San Fran which led to his hire this year in Houston. He also spent time with Kevin O’Connell on his staff with the Minnesota Vikings.

With the candidate and interview list growing by the day, it will be interesting to see who Kevin Stefanski ultimately adds to his staff.

Saints request interview with Texans QB coach Jerrod Johnson

The Saints requested an interview with Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson, who may be the up-and-comer fans have been asking for at offensive coordinator:

Here’s a new name for the New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator search: CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reports that the Saints have requested an interview with Houston Texans quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson. He’s played a major part in helping Texans rookie C.J. Stroud acclimate to the NFL as one of the season’s most exciting young quarterbacks.

Johnson, 35, was a standout quarterback himself at Texas A&M (Saints head coach Dennis Allen’s alma mater) from 2008 to 2010, turning pro with the second-most career passing yards in school history to his credit. He joined the Philadelphia Eagles for training camp in 2011 and bounced around the league after that, spending time with the Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens, and Dallas Cowboys during the years that followed.

Since turning to coaching in 2017 with the Bill Walsh Diversity coaching fellowship (first on the San Francisco 49ers under Kyle Shanahan, then the Indianapolis Colts with Frank Reich) he was risen quickly through the ranks. Johnson worked as the Minnesota Vikings assistant quarterbacks coach in 2022 and joined the Texans last year, working closely with offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik. Now he’s drawing attention for an OC job of his own. Johnson has worked with many successful coaches in this league and could be the up-and-comer Saints fans have been asking for. We’ll see how his meeting with New Orleans plays out.
