Jaguars make practice squad moves, add QB John Wolford

The Jaguars made six practice squad moves Tuesday, signing quarterback John Wolford, punter Matt Haack and long snapper Tucker Addington and releasing offensive lineman Jerome Carvin, defensive end Joe Gaziano and cornerback Tyler Hall from the unit.

Wolford, who starred at Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville from 2010-14, once held the state of Florida’s all-time high school passing records for yards (10,621) and touchdowns (126). He went on to throw for 8,794 yards with 59 touchdowns and 41 interceptions in four seasons at Wake Forest.

An undrafted free agent in 2018, Wolford originally signed with the New York Jets but was released before the regular season began.

Wolford was drafted by the Arizona Hotshots of the Alliance of American Football that November and threw for 1,617 yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions in eight games during the AAF’s lone season.

Wolford re-entered the NFL after the AAF suspended operations in April 2019, signing with the Los Angeles Rams, where he spent four seasons backing up quarterbacks Jared Goff and Matthew Stafford. He completed 61-of-104 passes for 626 yards with one touchdown and five interceptions over seven games and four starts.

Wolford signed with Tampa Bay’s practice squad before the 2023 season and joined the Buccaneers active roster last November. He re-signed with the Buccaneers this offseason but was released in August.

Haack joins the Jaguars as an insurance plan for starting punter Logan Cooke, who, according to head coach Doug Pederson, was dealing with soreness in his left knee after Jacksonville’s 23-20 loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday.

Haack has punted 453 times with a 44.7-yard average in his eight-year NFL career, over four seasons with the Miami Dolphins and one-season stints with the Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns and New York Giants. He has pinned 169 punts inside the 20-yard line and recorded 26 touchbacks.

The Giants released Haack on Nov. 5 after he made four appearances for New York, punting 21 times.

Addington returns to Jacksonville after briefly playing for the Jaguars during the 2023 preseason. He has also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Washington Commanders and Miami Dolphins since entering the NFL in 2022. He has appeared in 10 games and recorded one tackle.

The Jaguars signed a pair of offensive linemen, Jerome Carvin and Dieter Eiselen, to their practice squad on Tuesday.

Jacksonville released long snapper Peter Bowden and quarterback John Rhys Plumlee from its practice squad in corresponding moves.

Carvin entered the NFL in 2023 as an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee, originally signing with Kansas City. He was released from the Chiefs’ injured reserve that September but joined their practice squad this January, only to sign to the Chicago Bears’ offseason roster a week later.

Carvin spent the preseason with the Bears but was waived during 2024 preseason roster cutdowns. He joined the New England Patriots’ practice squad in late August and was released in October.

Eiselen, a native of Stellenbosch, South Africa, signed with the Bears as an undrafted free agent out of Yale in 2020. He spent two seasons largely on Chicago’s practice squad but was elevated to the active roster for three games.

Eiselen signed to Chicago’s active roster for the 2022 season and appeared in 11 games. He was released during the 2023 preseason and joined Houston’s practice squad, from which he was promoted to the Texans’ active roster to make 10 appearances.

Eiselen spent time on the Denver Broncos’ and San Francisco 49ers’ practice squads this season, before joining the Jaguars’.

Plumlee, a 2024 undrafted free agent, signed with Jacksonville’s practice squad following August’s preseason cutdowns, shortly after being waived by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bowden joined the Jaguars’ practice squad last Tuesday.

Patriots make multiple roster and practice squad moves

The Patriots made multiple roster moves

The New England Patriots were busy on Tuesday making multiple roster moves.

They announced the addition of center Sincere Haynesworth to the practice squad, along with the release of guard Jerome Carvin and Matt Landers. The team also released defensive end Jamree Kromah from the 53-man roster.

Kromah, who initially signed with the Chicago Bears as a rookie free agent, was inactive for three games for the Patriots, after being signed from the Bears’ practice squad.

One has to wonder if he’ll re-sign with the Patriots’ practice squad or end up back in Chicago at some point.

Meanwhile, Haynesworth, an undrafted rookie out of Tulane, is expected to add depth in the pipeline at the center position. Nick Leverett struggled last week helping to fill the void left by David Andrews, who is out with a season-ending shoulder injury.

There aren’t many options available to the Patriots, but that reality has led to an opportunity for Haynesworth.

Patriots announce two practice squad moves on Tuesday

The Patriots are adding to their defensive tackle depth

The New England Patriots signed defensive tackle Jaquelin Roy to their practice squad on Tuesday, per the team’s official website.

Roy worked out with the Patriots on Monday. He was caught up in the roster cuts for the Minnesota Vikings in August. The former fifth-round pick out of LSU appeared in 12 games for the Vikings in 2023 and finished the season with eight tackles.

During his final college run with the Tigers, he racked up 49 tackles, 3.5 tackles for a loss and 0.5 sacks in the 2022 season.

The Patriots will need to find additional defensive tackle depth with Christian Barmore out indefinitely after being diagnosed with blood clots.

To make room for Roy, the Patriots also announced the release of second-year offensive guard Jerome Carvin.

The players got the day off, but the team has been hard at work tinkering with the roster ahead of Sunday’s Week 2 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.

Mike Vrabel ‘was already coaching’ Tennessee OL prospects at pro day

Tennessee OL Jerome Carvin revealed the Titans are among the teams showing the most interest in him.

As Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel continues to make the rounds at pro days across the country this month, a few prospects at Tennessee’s pro day got a little taste of what it’ll be like to play for and be coached by him.

Vrabel was at the Tennessee pro day on Thursday, where some intriguing prospects took part.

However, Vrabel appeared to be paying closer attention to two prospects in particular: offensive tackle Darnell Wright and interior offensive lineman Jerome Carvin, per Adam Sparks of Knox News.

“He was already coaching us,” Carvin said of Vrabel, who gave the pair tips on technique. Carvin also added that the Titans are among the teams to show the most interest in him, along with the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills.

Tennessee’s increased interest in the offensive linemen comes as no surprise as the team looks to rebuild its group upfront, both inside and out, after a putrid 2022 campaign.

Wright is unlikely to last beyond early in the second round but could go Day 1. Carvin, who has experience playing both guard and center, would be a solid, versatile late-round option for Tennessee on Day 3.

You can check out more information on Carvin via The Draft Network’s Joe Marino right here. Marino also has a profile on Wright, which you can read here.

Jerome Carvin, Jabari Small meet with media ahead of Music City Bowl

Jerome Carvin and Jabari Small meet with media ahead of the Music City Bowl.

Tennessee will conclude its 2021 season Thursday against Purdue in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl.

The contest will take place at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. EST and ESPN will televise the matchup.

Ahead of the matchup, senior offensive lineman Jerome Carvin and sophomore running back Jabari Small met with media.

Below is a transcript of Carvin and Small’s media availability provided by the University of Tennessee.

Jerome Carvin

On having major contributors returning to Rocky Top next season

“It has to do with this staff, the culture, the locker room, just playing with our brothers again, our teammates. I’ve been a part of some rough times since I’ve been here, but we’ve got a bright future ahead of us and there’s a lot of things we can do.”

On the feeling of the Music City Bowl since he is returning next season

“It’s like a statement game, if that makes sense. We have to show what we can do, especially with this offense and the team that we’re playing against. We are playing a really good Big 10 team. It’s a statement game.”

On having the chance to play in an NFL stadium

“We haven’t really thought about it too much. My first game as a freshman, we played in Carolina, so I don’t really think about it too much. We will play anywhere. If there is a field with lines, we’re good.”

Jabari Small

On picking up where the team left off at the end of the regular season after a month off

“We’ve been preparing for the past three weeks. We’ve been actually doing the same routine that we’ve been doing, so we’ve just got to focus and then reboot. I think it’ll be a fun, fun game.”

On finishing the season off the right way

“I think it’s a big deal, just so people can get a glimpse of what we can be next year and starting off on the right foot for 2022. It’s just important, finishing off strong, just finishing what we started.”

On key Tennessee players returning and how that sets the tone for the future

“It means a lot. It’s a lot of leadership and experience. They’re veterans. We can only get better. They’ll hold us to a standard, and we will try to follow that. Those guys are extremely talented, have bright futures and could make a lot of money one day, so the fact that they want to come back means a lot.”
