Giants address several needs in latest Mel Kiper Jr. mock draft

The New York Giants address several key areas of need in the latest two-round mock draft from ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.

The New York Giants will need to address multiple positions in the 2022 NFL draft in order to fill out their roster ahead of organized team activities and minicamps.

Perhaps chief among those is right tackle, which many anticipate the Giants the Giants will focus on early. That includes ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper Jr., who has them taking NC State offensive lineman Ikem Ekwonu with the No. 5 overall pick in his latest mock draft.

If the board shakes out this way, the Giants would have to be thrilled to get their pick of the top two offensive tackles. I have Ekwonu just slightly over Evan Neal, but it’s tough to go wrong with either — they are my Nos. 2 and 3 prospects in this class. Ekwonu answered every question about his pass-protection ability last season. If left tackle Andrew Thomas keeps improving, these two could form one of the NFL’s best bookend pairings.

Two picks later, Kiper believes the Giants will finally address their pass rush problem. But with Kayvon Thibodeaux already off the board, Big Blue lands on Florida State defensive end Jermaine Johnson II instead.

The Giants can get their tackle at No. 5 and then focus on their defense, which allowed 4.7 yards per play last season (31st in the NFL). Johnson had 12 sacks last season and was one of the most impressive prospects at the Senior Bowl in January. He already has a few veteran pass-rush moves and can be an instant starter. He also played a lot of outside linebacker for the Seminoles, so he will have some versatility in Don Martindale’s defense. And if you’re keeping track, this makes four edge rushers in the top seven picks.

And finally, in the second round, Kiper has the Giants nabbing Baylor safety Jalen Pitre.

This makes five safeties off the board in the top 36 picks. Pitre was stellar against the run last season; he had 20 run stops, according to ESPN Stats & Info, which were the most by any FBS defensive back. He impressed teams at the Senior Bowl. The Giants could target a wide receiver here, depending on how the board falls. The 6-foot-3 George Pickens (Georgia) could make sense.

How would you feel about this trio, Giants fans? It addresses three areas of need but from a mock draft standpoint, it’s really more of the same. The Giants are very predictable going into this draft and the mocks have become redundant.

Ravens add plethora of talent in 7-round mock draft by ESPN

The Ravens added a plethora of talent in a seven-round mock draft by ESPN

The Baltimore Ravens will have plenty of tough decisions to make in a few weeks once draft weekend officially commences. The team has 10 draft picks including nine in the first four rounds, so they’ll have no shortage of opportunities to make the team better.

In a full seven-round 2022 mock draft, Jordan Reid of ESPN laid out each of the 262 picks slated to happen over the course of the draft’s three days. He selected a plethora of talented players for Baltimore, starting in the first round at pick No. 14, where he had them take edge rusher Jermaine Johnson II out of Florida State. Reid explained that his versatility as a pass rusher and a run defender would fit well on the Ravens’ defense.

“He is a ready-made run defender as well as a mature pass-rusher. Johnson is firm at the point of attack and has a determined mentality throughout games and a playing style that would fit well in Baltimore.”

At pick No. 45, Reid gave Baltimore cornerback depth in Tariq Woolen out of UTSA. He talked about how Woolen is as physically gifted of a cornerback as many have seen.

“The 6-foot-4 Woolen is one of the most physically gifted corners we’ve seen in the past decade. In need of depth on the perimeter, the Ravens could take a liking to him as a developmental player behind Marlon Humphrey, Marcus Peters and Iman Marshall.”

In the third round, Reid first took offensive tackle Rasheed Walker out of Penn State at pick No. 76 for Baltimore, discussing how he could be a nice developmental piece.

“After signing Morgan Moses, the Ravens still need developmental depth. Walker makes sense, as he has spurts of positive play, but his technique leaves him still far away from being ready to step in and play meaningful snap”

At pick No. 100, Reid has former Florida star defensive lineman Zach Carter being added to the Ravens, who he crowns a great run defender with starter potential if he can improve his pass rushing skills.

“A stout and consistent player at the point of attack, Carter is a 3-4 base end who is ready to play early as a run defender. If he becomes a more consistent pass-rusher, he could be a starter. He fits well in the Ravens’ odd defensive front.”

On Day 3 for Baltimore, in the fourth round Reid picks Cincinnati inside linebacker Darrian Beavers at No. 110, edge rusher Jesse Luketa out of Penn State at No. 119, wide receiver Kevin Austin Jr. from Notre Dame at No. 128, edge rusher Sam Williams from USC at No. 139 and inside linebacker Damone Clark out of LSU at No. 141. In the sixth round, Reid rounded out the Ravens’ draft with guard Leticus Smith out of Virginia Tech.

Reid picked a balanced group of talented playmakers for Baltimore headlined by Johnson and Woolen, both of which could immediately fill in and take on big roles at positions of need. The other players taken in the mid/late rounds solidify multiple other areas of need, which is key as the team looks to build up their roster.

2022 NFL draft: The consensus big board top-6 EDGE prospects

We’ll begin with the edge rushers, which is the deepest group in the draft.

NFL teams are busy preparing for the 2022 draft which will take place the last weekend of this month. The Seattle Seahawks are armed with eight picks and they’ll need to put all of them to use to climb up out of the hole that they’ve dug for themselves by trading Russell Wilson.

To help get you ready for the draft, we’ll be reviewing some of the top prospects at each position Seattle should be targetting in this class. We’ll begin with the edge rushers, which is the deepest position in this draft. Here are the top-six edge prospects this year according to the consensus big board rankings for the 2022 NFL draft.

2022 NFL draft: Jermaine Johnson II scouting report

Everything NFL draft fans need to know about Florida State edge defender Jermaine Johnson II

A Georgia transfer who put up impressive numbers at Florida State last year, Jermaine Johnson will bring his production and potential to the next level as one of the top edge defenders in the 2022 NFL draft.

Giants address multiple needs in latest three-round Draft Wire mock

The New York Giants land several Day 1 starters in the latest three-round mock from our friends over at Draft Wire.

Mock draft season has now gone into overdrive with projections and prognostications coming from every direction. That includes from our friends over at Draft Wire, who recently released their post-combine three-round mock.

At No. 5 overall, the Giants miss out on North Carolina State offensive lineman Ikem Ekwonu, who goes first overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars. But that doesn’t sting too bad as Big Blue gets a solid consolation prize: Alabama offensive tackle Evan Neal.

The Giants have bigger needs on defense, but it’s hard to pass up a franchise tackle, especially when one as talented as Neal falls into your lap. A massive mauler with rare athleticism for his size, Neal would pair up with Andrew Thomas to give the Giants a talented young tandem to protect Daniel Jones.

The Giants have no bigger needs than along the offensive line. Sure, they have some areas of concern defensively, but they’ll enter the new league year in search of four new starters along the O-Line. And Neal, once a consensus No. 1 overall pick, is about as good as it gets.

And the real bonus? The Giants address their defense and their need for an edge rusher just two picks later, snagging Jermaine Johnson II from Florida State.

After addressing their biggest need on offense at No. 5, the Giants do the same on the other side of the ball with this pick. Johnson backed up his impressive film with a dominant week at the Senior Bowl, followed by a strong showing the combine that should put him in the top-10 conversation.

Making the pick of Johnson look even better is what the Giants do at No. 36 overall. Still in need of talented defenders, Draft Wire has the Giants landing Alabama linebacker Christian Harris.

36. New York Giants | Alabama LB Christian Harris

Now we’re talking.

With their next two picks — each in the third round — the Giants land a new starting tight end and some depth at wide receiver.

67. New York Giants | Coastal Carolina TE Isaiah Likely

81. New York Giants (from MIA) | Boise State WR Khalil Shakir

The argument can most certainly be made that the Giants should have sought out a guard with one of their third-round picks, but Isaiah Likely is a potential steal and long-term starter, while Khalil Shakir gives Brian Daboll a little more to work with offensively.

Broncos trade down in Mel Kiper’s latest NFL mock draft

Mel Kiper’s latest NFL mock draft has the Broncos trading down from No. 9 overall in the first round.

In his latest 2022 NFL mock draft, ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper has the Denver Broncos trading down from the ninth overall pick in the first round (subscription required for link).

Kiper’s mock has the Cleveland Browns trading up to No. 9 to select USC wide receiver Drake London. After trading down to No. 13, the Broncos then add Florida State edge defender Jermaine Johnson II.

This is a change from Kiper’s last mock, which had Denver selecting Georgia linebacker Nakobe Dean. News broke earlier this week that the Broncos hope to re-sign Josey Jewell, which might drop linebacker on pundits’ list of top needs for the team.

Kiper isn’t the only draft analyst who could see Johnson as a fit for Denver. NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah also predicted Johnson-to-Broncos in his most recent mock draft.

Kiper thinks the Broncos will address the quarterback position before the draft, either by trade or through free agency. The ESPN pundit has Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett going off the board at No. 11 and Liberty’s Malik Willis falling to No. 20 in the first round.

The NFL draft will be held in Las Vegas from April 28-30.

FSU’s Jermaine Johnson II is wrecking Senior Bowl week

Florida State edge defender Jermaine Johnson II has been a dominant force all week in Mobile

Every year, the Senior Bowl gives some of the top college football prospects in the country an opportunity to improve their draft stock during a week of practice with NFL coaching.

There are always a handful of players who make the most of that chance, dominating the competition and launching themselves into the first-round conversation.

One name that’s sure to leave Mobile with plenty of buzz is Florida State edge defender Jermaine Johnson II, who was dominant all week long:
