Doug Farrar’s three-round ‘What I would do’ mock draft

In his final mock, Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar puts on his GM hat for the first 105 picks in the 2022 NFL draft.

There are almost as many ways to do mock drafts as there are mock drafts, which is saying something this time of year. There are the mocks that try and get into the heads of every team. There are the mocks that are more like big boards, that align the best players overall down the first round. And there are those mocks in which the Mocker in Charge puts his or her general manager hat on, and tries to anticipate the best moves for every NFL team.

This particular mock, for the most part, is one of those “What I would do” mocks, in which I try to marry the best overall prospects with teams and team needs through the first three rounds. There are no trades in this particular mock; it’s more about fits and situations.

So here, with a few explained exceptions, is how the first three rounds of the 2022 NFL draft might go were I in charge of the whole thing.

As always, thank your deity of choice that I am not.

Laurie Fitzpatrick’s 2022 NFL mock draft

Touchdown Wire’s, Laurie Fitzpatrick reveals her mock draft as the first round comes closer.

This is the first draft in recent memory where there isn’t a consensus number one overall prospect. There are still guys rising and falling as each day passes.

In my first and only mock, I’ve looked at the value that each player adds to the team making the pick. There are only a few teams that are in a rebuild, this means that teams may not go with best available, but rather guys that help them win now.

That being said, there won’t be any trades in this mock draft. Just straight picks that fill teams’ needs.

Let’s start with the top pick. The Jacksonville Jaguars are on the clock!

NFL player comparisons for the top 50 prospects in the 2022 draft

Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar and Mark Schofield give their NFL player comparisons for the top 50 prospects in the 2022 NFL draft.

One of the more interesting and instructive things to do when you’re evaluating draft prospects in any class is to try and drill down to the traits that make them most comparable to this or that current or former NFL player. It’s not always a like-as-like comparison; what you’re really trying to do is to estimate how this prospect could be best utilized at the next level, given the current skill set and potential for improvement.

When Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar and Mark Schofield put together their lists of the top 2022 NFL draft prospects at every position, with detailed scouting reports on well over 120 players, NFL comparisons were part of the mission — again, to give a more clear picture of how these prospects may transition to the NFL, and which NFL teams might favor them the most.

This year, Mark did quarterbacks, receivers, tight ends, interior defensive linemen, linebackers, and cornerbacks.

Doug took care of running backs, offensive tackles, interior offensive linemen, edge defenders, and safeties.

Sometimes, regardless of the position, it doesn’t take long for a comparison to come through — you watch some tape, and it’s clear. Other times, you want to get into advanced metrics, testing percentiles, and even more tape. Over time, instructive comparisons can be gleaned, and it’s one more piece of the puzzle.

Here are the NFL comparisons for Touchdown Wire’s top 50 prospects in the 2022 class, with amazing graphics for each prospect and player by the great Coley Cleary.

Mel Kiper, Todd McShay project familiar names to Giants in latest mock draft

In the latest rotating mock draft from ESPN’s Mel Kiper and Todd McShay, the New York Giants land some familiar names early on.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper and Todd McShay released a rotating three-round mock draft on Tuesday and in it, the New York Giants end up with some familiar names early on.

With pick No. 5 overall, they project NC State offensive tackle Ikem Ekwonu to the Giants over both Evan Neal and Charles Cross.

Andrew Thomas looked better in 2021, but the Giants still need a tackle opposite him — and the best one in the class is still here at No. 5. New GM Joe Schoen would be sprinting to turn in the pick card if the board fell this way.

After the Carolina Panthers take Liberty quarterback Malik Willis, the Giants are back on the clock at No. 7. Unfortunately, Aidan Hutchinson, Travon Walker and Kayvon Thibodeaux are all off the board, leaving New York with Florida State edge rusher Jermaine Johnson II.

Hutchinson, Walker and Thibodeaux went 1-2-3, but Johnson is also worthy of a top-10 pick, and the Giants have a glaring issue at edge rusher. This would be a great start to the draft for the Giants, checking off a pair of boxes with their first two picks.

When things circle back to the Giants at No. 36 overall, Kiper has them addressing the safety position with Penn State’s Jalen Pitre.

If the Giants address their offensive and defensive lines with picks Nos. 5 and 7, they can move on to find a safety or linebacker here. Pitre is physical against the run and has some range in coverage.

In Round 3 (pick No. 67 overall), McShay and Kiper have the first new name going to the Giants that we’ve seen in a while: Wyoming linebacker Chad Muma.

With Blake Martinez coming off a torn ACL, why not get some insurance at inside linebacker? Muma tied for the FBS lead in tackles last season (125).

Finally, the Giants select UTSA cornerback Tariq Woolen at No. 81 overall.

I love this guy’s traits. Woolen is a former receiver who is still learning the cornerback position, but he ran a 4.26 in the 40-yard dash at the combine at 6-foot-4. Tack on the explosion demonstrated by a 42-inch vertical jump and some incredible 33 5/8-inch length, and you have someone who could develop into a star with time.

And that does it for the latest rotating mock draft from Kiper and McShay. How would you feel about this haul, Giants fans? Let us know in the comments below.

2022 NFL draft: The top 50 players in the 2022 NFL class

Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar and Mark Schofield unleash their Big Board: The top 50 players in the 2022 NFL draft class.

Every team has its own scouting methods to get where they need to get before the draft begins. Area scouts compile their reports through the season, directors of scouting compile those reports over time, and then, everything is funneled up to coaches and general managers. Then, team musts and needs are considered, best players available regardless of position are listed, and eventually, NFL teams will put together their Big Boards — the players most highly regarded in the building as the draft goes down.

At Touchdown Wire, our two-person staff (Doug Farrar and Mark Schofield) did it a little differently. We had to act as our own area scouts, directors, coaches, and general managers, and we didn’t have any team needs to consider — we’ll save those for the mock drafts.

[vertical-gallery id=170399]

So, this Big Board is all about the players we think are the 50 best overall in this draft class. We started the process by putting together our best players at every position, from quarterback to safety…

[listicle id=169675]

…and then, we each put together their individual Top 50 lists. After a bit of thumb-wrestling, we came up with what you have before you. With well over 20,000 words, and more than 200 individual tape examples, and scads of advanced metrics, we feel that this is as comprehensive a top prospect list as you’ll see anywhere outside of an NFL front office.

Here are Touchdown Wire’s Top 50 prospects in the 2022 NFL draft class.

Giants ‘kill it’ in latest three-round Draft Wire mock

The New York Giants land five potential Day 1 starters (all at areas of need) in the latest three-round mock from Draft Wire.

The NFL Draft is just 11 days away and we’ve seen almost everything when it comes to mock drafts.

In Draft Wire’s latest three-round mock by Luke Easterling, four defensive players — edge rushers Travon Walker, Aidan Hutchinson and Kayvon Thibodeaux along with cornerback Ahmad ‘Sauce’ Gardner — are gobbled up in the first hour of the draft.

The New York Giants, selecting No. 5 overall, swoop in grab Alabama offensive tackle Evan Neal.

Even if Andrew Thomas pans out at left tackle, the Giants need an upgrade on the other side, especially if they want to get the most out of Daniel Jones and Saquon Barkley. Neal is a massive mauler with impressive athleticism for his size, and might immediately be the best offensive lineman on the roster.

After the Carolina Panthers take Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett at No. 6, the Giants are on the clock again and land a pass rusher of their own in Florida State’s Jermaine Johnson II at No. 7.

While Kyle Hamilton might get consideration here, the Giants opt for the more premium position, landing one of this year’s most promising edge defenders in a deep class. Johnson backed up his impressive film with a dominant week at the Senior Bowl, and a stellar performance at the NFL Scouting Combine.

In the second round, Easterling mocks Penn State safety Jaquan Brisker, a player that could conceivably walk right out on the field and start next to Xavier McKinney, to the Giants.

In Round 3, Easterling has the Giants filling two other needs with UCLA tight end Greg Dulcich at No. 67 and Wisconsin linebacker Leo Chenal at No. 81.

If the Giants walk away with these five players in the first three rounds it would be considered a killing. All five could end up being impact players as rookies. But this is a pretty deep draft at many positions and with five picks in the top 81, the Giants are in the driver’s seat to upgrade their sagging roster no matter who falls them next week.
