Washington makes multiple roster moves ahead of Week 16 game vs. Cowboys

Washington made several roster moves ahead of Sunday night’s game vs. Cowboys.

The Washington Football Team will be shorthanded again for Sunday night’s game at Dallas. In preparation for the rematch against the Cowboys, the WFT made a flurry of moves ahead of Sunday’s game.

Washington currently has six players on the reserve/COVID-19 list, including two extremely important starts in Pro Bowl guard Brandon Scherff and top linebacker Cole Holcomb. While Scherff and Holcomb could be activated ahead of Sunday night’s game, Washington is preparing for life without the two starters.

On Saturday, Washington activated running back Wendell Smallwood from the reserve/COVID-19 list, giving Washington four running backs for Sunday’s game. According to Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post, starter Antonio Gibson traveled with the team. Gibson is listed as questionable for the game.

The WFT activated kicker Joey Slye from injured reserve. That leaves Washington with two kickers on the 53-man roster. Washington likes both Slye and Brian Johnson.

Washington elevated Smallwood and veteran cornerback D.J. Hayden from the practice squad. In addition, Washington promoted safety Jeremy Reaves and linebacker De’Jon Harris as COVID-19 replacements. Reaves was active and played almost the entire game last week.

5 most surprising players cut by Washington

While there were no major shockers on Tuesday, here are five moves that could be considered the most surprising.

The Washington Football Team released 27 players over the last two days to meet the league-mandated 53-man roster by Tuesday afternoon.

For the most part, there were no surprises. On Monday, Washington released 10 players, none of which were a surprise. However, on Tuesday, the Football Team released five players who were a bit of a surprise.

The bigger surprises may be Washington keeping just four linebackers on the initial 53-man roster than the actual players released.

Here are five players whose releases could be considered the most surprising on Tuesday.

‘Doing things the right way:’ Rivera explains decision to go with Reaves over Reid at safety

Rivera said that his decision to go with Reaves and Curl over Eric Reid at safety was due to the respect they earned during training camp.

When it was announced last week that free agent safety Eric Reid would be turning down a spot on the Washington practice squad following the season-ending injury to Landon Collins, a bunch of us were left scratching our heads. It almost made too much sense for Reid to join his former coach Ron Rivera in Washington and start his NFL career back up in a defensive system that he is familiar with, so why did he turn the opportunity down.

Well, he turned it down because the offer was to join the practice squad and work his way up to the active roster, when Reid felt he was already in shape to join the active roster. For Rivera, who explained the situation on Monday, his decision to hold the starting spot at a distance from Reid is due to the respect that he gained for both Kamren Curl and Jeremy Reaves in training camp, and something that he feels he owes to them.

“I’m one of those guys that if you come to training camp, you work your butt off, you do everything that you’re supposed to do, you deserve that opportunity before anybody else,” Rivera said. “And that kind of what I was doing with Jeremy [Reaves]. I think he earned that right here and my respect, as far as going through camp, not complaining and doing things the right way. So I wanted to give him a chance to be part of the 53 and see where he is.”

Going forward, it will be on Curl and Reaves to shore up the safety position, with the belief that Deshazor Everett can continue to hold things down at free safety. No matter how badly you wanted Reid to come in and improve the secondary, you have to respect Rivera’s reasoning for why he’s choosing to go with the young guys.

Washington places Landon Collins on IR; Jeremy Reaves elevated from practice squad

Collins was sent to the IR on Tuesday as he will undergo surgery on an Achilles injury, while Reaves was brought up from the practice squad.

It was expected to happen, but the Washington Football Team announced on Tuesday that safety Landon Collins was being placed on the injured reserve with an Achilles injury that will end his 2020 season. He will receive surgery on the Achilles, and hopefully be back in time for the start of the 2021 season.

In his place, Washington promoted S Jeremy Reaves from the practice squad to the active roster. It is unclear if this is the only move that Washington is going to make to try and fill the hole left by Collins, as they also have the option to try and sign a safety in free agency. If they do try to sign someone, that move will have to be made by Wednesday at the latest to make sure the player gets through all COVID-19 protocols in time to play in the Week 9 game against the New York Giants.
