ESPN reports what Alvin Kamara is looking for in Saints contract talks

ESPN reports Alvin Kamara ‘could be a threat to miss training camp’ if he doesn’t get more future security in New Orleans Saints contract extension talks:

Just what was Alvin Kamara looking to achieve by exiting New Orleans Saints minicamp early last week? ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports that it’s the opening salvo in what may turn into a messy summer of contract talks as Kamara looks for more assurances that his future in football remains in New Orleans.

Fowler shared what he’s hearing on Kamara during an appearance on ESPN SportsCenter.

“I can confirm he missed the final day of minicamp, and that was contract-related,” Fowler said. “He’s got two years left on his deal, he’s due $11.8 million this year. The problem is next year he’s due $25 million non-guaranteed, the Saints, there’s no way that they are going pay that. I’m told Kamara is open to doing a reworked two-year deal, strengthen his guarantees in Year 1 (2025). They’ve talked about it. So far, not a lot of momentum. We’ll see if something shakes out, but he could be a threat to miss training camp if they don’t get something done before late July.”

That’s a bold threat, if Kamara is indeed committed to a training camp holdout. Under the new collective bargaining agreement — Article 42, Section 1(b)(vi) — veteran players under contract are subject to a mandatory fine of $50,000 per day they remain away from the team during training camp. For context, Kamara received weekly game checks of about $63,000 in salary last season.

Training camp includes 21 practice dates, so if he holds out the entire time that’s potentially $1.05 million lost in fines. While Kamara can technically afford it, having earned more than $43 million in his contracts with the Saints alone (to say nothing of endorsements), effectively losing a year’s salary isn’t appealing. And this isn’t about him wanting a higher salary, it’s about ensuring he’ll get to be a lifer and finish his playing career where it started.

The modern CBA also does not allow teams to rescind or waive those fines as in the past should both sides reach an agreement on a new contract. It’s been an effective deterrent against holdouts. Some players like Deebo Samuel and Derwin James have attempted “hold-ins” by showing up to camp each day and working out alone on the side while refusing to participate in team drills, but this approach has drawn mixed results.

Additionally, Fowler pointed to Klint Kubiak’s experience with the San Francisco 49ers last year informing his plans for Kamara, which may have helped push the running back to this crossroads: “Kamara’s got to play that Christian McCaffrey role, and McCaffrey just got paid. So that changes things. Kamara’s going to need more money.”

Kamara has spoken about how great a fit Kubiak’s offense is for him, so we’re guessing he wants to settle into it right away. He spent his spring like he usually does, training on his own in Miami while communicating with his coaches (including Kubiak) and teammates almost daily. We’ll just have to wait and see whether the threat of a holdout materializes into something serious, or if it’s even necessary. Kamara’s teammates like Jamaal Williams have publicly supported his efforts to get a new deal, but the longer this draws out, the greater a distraction it may cause. There’s room for compromise to make both sides happy. Let’s see if the Saints and Kamara can find it.

Jeremy Fowler: Chiefs view Xavier Worthy as more than just a deep threat

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the #Chiefs view Xavier Worthy as more than just a deep threat.

The Kansas City Chiefs turned heads during the NFL draft, trading up from 32 to 28 with the Buffalo Bills to take former Texas receiver Xavier Worthy.

Worthy electrified the NFL Scouting Combine in March when he ran a 4.2-second 40-yard dash, the fastest time recorded.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Sunday that the Chiefs view Worthy as more than a deep threat and believe he can be utilized all over the field.

“As one person with the team told me, Xavier Worthy has speed that you can ‘feel’ but they love the football player as well, so they’re excited to have him in their packages on offense, getting him on the field.”

Heading into the draft, the main question surrounding the Texas product was about his weight holding up at the next level. However, Fowler has been told that Worthy’s top priority is to get his weight up during the offseason programs.

“Now, Worthy, I’m told, part of his focus is to get his weight up a little bit,” Fowler reported. “He’s been in the 160s. He told reporters in Kansas City he is trying to get closer to 175. So, officially bulk-up season over the next few months.”

Despite his stature, Kansas City’s coaching staff believes that Worthy is not just a one-trick pony and displays levels of toughness and physicality.

“The Chiefs don’t just love what he does on a track, they love what he can do on the field and his toughness specifically,” Fowler continued. “So, this is a player that should see the field right away.”

The wide receiver position was a major area of weakness for the Chiefs in 2023, and with Rashee Rice’s 2024 status in question, Worthy should see the field sooner rather than later.

Jeremy Fowler: Jayden Daniels ‘intrigued’ by Minnesota Vikings

According to ESPN Insider Jeremy Fowler, LSU QB Jayden Daniels is “unsure” of playing for the Commanders and “intrigued” by the Vikings.

With the NFL draft less than a week away, the rumor mill is starting to heat up. That includes the possibility of a top-flight draft prospect not playing for the team that drafts him.

In a recent segment on SportsCenter, ESPN Insider Jeremy Fowler stated that there’s some real smoke behind the rumors that former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels is unsure of the Washington Commanders. Currently, the Commanders sit with the second pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and are in a prime position to draft the athletic quarterback.

Fowler went on to state that Daniels has an interest in playing for the Las Vegas Raiders and being reunited with one of his former coaches at Arizona State, Antonio Pierce. However, as Fowler mentions, the Raiders are unlikely to be able to trade up that far and get Daniels.

Then, Fowler mentioned that Daniels is “intrigued” by the possibility of the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings have a real need at the position, and unlike the Raiders, they have the assets to be able to move up for him. Currently, the Vikings have both the 11th and 23rd picks in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft.

It’s long been thought that the Vikings are a prime candidate to move up in the draft to grab a quarterback. Daniels would be an intriguing prospect for the team and an interesting fit in the offense that head coach Kevin O’Connell wants to run in Minnesota. Just how much fire is there to this smoke? We’ll find out on Thursday.

Bears are reportedly ‘very high’ on EDGE Danielle Hunter going into free agency

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Bears will have interest in Minnesota Vikings star pass rusher Danielle Hunter this spring.

The Chicago Bears already took a big swing during the 2023 NFL trade deadline to help solve their pass rush woes. Could they do it again this spring when free agency begins? According to ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the Bears are “very high” on Minnesota Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter, who is set to hit the open market this March. Fowler also listed the Jacksonville Jaguars as a possible option as well.

The Bears know Hunter quite well, who has been with the Vikings for the entirety of his nine-year career. Hunter was a third-round pick out of LSU and quickly became an impactful pass rusher for Minnesota. Hunter has made four Pro Bowls during his career and made Second-Team All-Pro in 2018. He’s eclipsed 10 sacks in five of his last eight seasons played, including a career high of 16.5 this past season. He also tied for the league lead in tackles for loss with 23, along with Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby. In total, Hunter has 87.5 sacks, seventh-most in the NFL since the beginning of the 2015 season.

Injuries sidelined the talented edge rusher in 2020, where he missed the entire year due to a neck injury, and he missed half of the 2021 season with a torn pec. Those appear to be in the past, however, as Hunter has played in all 17 games the last two seasons and is looking to cash in once again with a big contract.

Fowler believes it will be difficult for the Vikings to retain Hunter, who signed a new one-year deal worth $20 million last offseason after holding out of the team’s early offseason programs. His one-year contract also prevents the Vikings from using the franchise or transition tag on him.

Given that Minnesota has just under $29 million in open cap space, according to Spotrac, as well as their reluctance to sign Hunter to a long-term deal last offseason, and their other upcoming decisions, such as needing to extend wide receiver Justin Jefferson, it’s very possible Hunter will be playing elsewhere in 2024. That elsewhere could be Chicago.

Adding Hunter to a defensive line that already includes Montez Sweat would be a significant boost to the Bears defense. Sweat was sensational after he was acquired from the Washington Commanders, and the two could wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks. Sweat and Hunter combined for 29 sacks during the 2023 season. The Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs circled Hunter as a fit back in late November following the Bears’ 12-10 win over the Vikings.

Though Hunter will be 30 years old in the fall, he’s shown no signs of slowing down. The question becomes: do the Bears spend big at the defensive end position once again? Sweat will count $25 million against the cap in 2024, and Hunter will be looking for a lucrative deal as well. Chicago is projected to have $49 million available in cap space heading into free agency.

Hunter will likely have other suitors assuming he hits the open market, but given the Bears’ needs and available cap space, he’s certainly an intriguing option.

Kevin O’Connell confirms Nick Mullens will start Christmas Eve vs. Lions

As was reported earlier on Monday, Mullens will be the starting quarterback on Sunday

After much speculation and a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Kevin O’Connell confirmed that Nick Mullens would start at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings on Christmas Eve against the Detroit Lions.

The Vikings are currently playing with house money on the precipice of a playoff berth. Not having quarterback Kirk Cousins is a situation that they don’t want to be in and have held their own without him going 3-3.

Mullens did throw for 303 yards and two touchdowns but also threw two interceptions with a third that was returned for a touchdown but was called back due to an offsides call on Trey Hendrickson.

The tough part about the Vikings quarterback situation is there is no perfect answer. They are all backups for a reason and there will be warts to deal with. Can you minimize them and overcome them with your strong defense when they do occur? That is what has to happen for the Vikings moving forward.

Nick Mullens expected to start vs. Lions on Christmas Eve

Jeremy Fowler expects Mullens to remain the starting quarterback for at least one more week

After an up-and-down performance against the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday afternoon, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler is reporting that Minnesota Vikings quarterback Nick Mullens is expected to start on Sunday afternoon against the Detroit Lions.

The game on Christmas Eve will be the Vikings’ second consecutive winter whiteout at U.S. Bank Stadium. They beat the New York Giants by a score of 27-24 last season.

Mullens started over Josh Dobbs and Jaren Hall against the Bengals and had some good moments. He completed 26-of-33 passes for 303 yards and two touchdowns, both of which went to Jordan Addison. Unfortunately, there were two bad interceptions and a pick-six that was called back due to an offsides call on Trey Hendrickson that had nothing to do with the play.

Is it the right call to start Mullens? That is up to the coaching staff to decide. When you look at everything all-encompassing, he is the best option in trying to win games now. If and when the Vikings have a playoff spot clinched or are eliminated, then the conversation begins about playing Hall to get him some experience.

Fowler: Almost no chance Danielle Hunter gets traded

It looks like Hunter will be with the Vikings after the trade deadline

The Minnesota Vikings have been rumored to be selling at the deadline ever since losing to the Los Angeles Chargers 28-24 in week three. The main player involved in those discussions was outside linebacker Danielle Hunter.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, there is “almost no chance” that Hunter will get traded at the trade deadline on Tuesday.

The Vikings are in a really interesting spot for the 2023 season. Sitting at 4-4, they were back in position for a playoff spot. Unfortunately, losing quarterback Kirk Cousins to a season-ending torn Achilles tendon put a wrench into things.

The Vikings competitive rebuild matra doesn’t jive with trading away one of your best players, even if he is on an expiring contract. Hunter may hit the open market, but the Vikings are likely going to be active in trying to re-sign him.

Danielle Hunter trade would take ‘sizable deal’ to complete

Minnesota Vikings OLB Danielle Hunter is a hot commodity with the trade deadline approaching, but it will take a sizable deal to acquire him

The National Football League trade deadline is 11 days away and Minnesota Vikings outside linebacker Danielle Hunter continues to be the talk of the league.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler spoke to multiple individuals around the league and the sense is that it would take a “sizable deal to pry him” from the Vikings.

But three-time Pro Bowl pass-rusher Danielle Hunter is a player that several execs are watching closely. If available, he would have a big market. A few teams pointed out to me that his reworked one-year bridge deal at $17-million carries $10 million in base salary, modest for a player of his caliber and flexible for trade purposes.

Here’s my understanding on Minnesota and Hunter: The Vikings gauged trade interest in the offseason when they didn’t have a new deal, as a contingency if they couldn’t re-sign him. Lately, they have not been exploring a trade for Hunter, despite some external interest. And there’s a sentiment in the building that Hunter, who leads the league in sacks, is valuable for a team that isn’t out of it yet.

So, the sense is it would take a sizable deal to pry him. One league exec who’s very high on Hunter said he’s not in position to give up a first-rounder for him, suggesting that might be what it would require.

Fowler also mentioned that Hunter was a player that the Jaguars targeted in the preseason. They also have been linked to Hunter multiple times over the last couple of weeks.

The Vikings trading him would be an admission that they either don’t want to re-sign him or they don’t believe they will be able to after modifying his contract multiple years in a row.

It would also be an admission that they don’t believe the season is going anywhere. Nobody could fault them after a disastrous start at 2-4 that could end up being worse by the trade deadline.

Buckle up, these rumors aren’t going to be slowing down.

Will Commanders be an under-the-radar playoff team?

One analyst believes the Commanders will be a playoff team.

ESPN analysts Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano this week discussed who were some of the NFL under-the-radar teams that might make the playoffs.

Here is the link for the story.

In 2022, Washington sadly opened 1-4. The offense looked anemic, and another losing season looked certain. However, the Commanders suddenly won six of their next seven. They were now 7-5, in control of their own playoff destiny.

However, the offense struggled mightily to make plays, and the Commanders only went 1-3-1 in their last five games, losing out to the Giants for the final playoff spot.

Who is a team that did not make the playoffs in 2022 that most people will not be expecting to qualify in 2023?

Graziano selected the Falcons, citing this will be Desmond Ridder’s second season at quarterback for Atlanta, and they have recent draft selections that have shown great promise.

Fowler responded that he was taking Washington. Fowler elaborated that he was taking the Commanders primarily because of the defensive line returning, and the depth at wide receiver, which will help second-year quarterback Sam Howell. Fowler then also mentioned the contribution to the offense that newly hired offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy will be expected to make.

Interestingly enough, the offensive line has had the most questions in the offseason. The unit has new starters at both guard positions, Saahdiq Charles and Sam Cosmi, and a new center in Nick Gates. The Commanders also signed Andrew Wylie from the Chiefs to start at right tackle. This unit will need to help Sam Howell as he continues to learn a new offense and gain needed NFL experience, as he played only one game in 2022.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler gives grim update on Chiefs’ negotiations with Chris Jones

ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler gave a grim update on the #Chiefs’ ongoing contract negotiations with Chris Jones.

The Kansas City Chiefs have been unable to reach an agreement on a new contract for star defensive lineman Chris Jones, who has been holding out for an extension through the preseason. With just over a week until their first regular season game, reports regarding the ongoing negotiations have taken a turn for the worse.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported an update between Jones and the team while appearing on SportsCenter on Sunday.

“I talked to somebody with the team who said it feels like this is going to drag on even longer, maybe even into the season,” Fowler said. “The Chiefs certainly don’t want that but neither side appears ready to move on contract talks.”

If Jones is not backing down from his stance of missing multiple games, then the Chiefs will have to keep their defensive line afloat while negotiations continue. Watch for Kansas City to keep more players to man its front four early in the coming season to compensate for Jones’ extended absence.
