Panthers S Jeremy Chinn named beneficiary of busy 2023 offseason

Jeremy Chinn was tabbed as a player who will thrive as a result of the Panthers’ offseason additions.

Carolina Panthers safety/linebacker/big nickel back . . . okay, we’ll just label him as a “defender” for now . . . Jeremy Chinn really hasn’t had a solidified or defined role during his three years in the NFL. But he may now, and it’s all thanks to a new friend.

NFL.com columnist Jeffri Chadiha recently named five players he believes will benefit most from his respective team’s offseason moves. Chadiha lists Chinn, who is happy to welcome in free-agent signing Vonn Bell.

He writes:

Chinn was on social media the minute NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported that the Panthers signed free agent safety Vonn Bell in March. Chinn surely knew all about the success Bell had in Cincinnati, where he paired with Jessie Bates to give the Bengals one of the best safety duos in the league. Bell can do the same thing with Chinn in Carolina, as the Panthers have a young defense that could easily become dominant this coming season. Carolina already has a gifted edge rusher in Brian Burns and a talented third-year cornerback in Jaycee Horn. Chinn has been a steady presence on the back end since his arrival in 2020, and the arrival of Bell means he can showcase his versatility even more.

Chinn, in fact, had a very similar sentiment himself. During his visit to the NFL Network studio a little over a week ago, the 25-year-old expressed his excitement over Bell and his role in defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero’s 3-4 base defense.

“Yeah, I’m super excited about it,” said Chinn, who was told he’ll be playing closer to the line of scrimmage. “I’ll be able to be around the ball more. So, that’s really exciting. Talking to Evero and Coach [Jonathan] Cooley, we have plans and I’m excited kinda for what they have me doing a little bit.”

The 2020 second-round pick has seen his usage from that spot fluctuate year in and year out. He chalked up 40.5 percent of his defensive snaps from the box in 2020, 50.2 in 2021 and 25.4 in 2022.

But with Bell joining Xavier Woods as a starter at the top of the unit, Chinn will be allowed to roam where he’s roamed best—from the middle of the defense.

Panthers S Jeremy Chinn ‘super excited’ for new role in 3-4 defense

Panthers S Jeremy Chinn is excited for his role in Ejiro Evero’s new defense.

Change can be a scary prospect for many people, but not for Carolina Panthers safety (or is it linebacker now?) Jeremy Chinn.

The soon-to-be fourth-year defender recently joined NFL Now and host Andrew Siciliano to catch up on what’s been a busy offseason for his team. Among the many moves that’ve been made include, obviously, a change at defensive coordinator—where Ejiro Evero is set to implement a switch to a 3-4 base.

So, when asked what that means for him, Chinn confirmed what most believed would be his role for the unit.

“This system, I’ll be able to be closer to the line of scrimmage again, kinda how I was in previous years,” he said.

But, uh, is he happy about it?

“Yeah, I’m super excited about it,” Chinn told Siciliano. “I’ll be able to be around the ball more. So, that’s really exciting. Talking to Evero and Coach [Jonathan] Cooley, we have plans and I’m excited kinda for what they have me doing a little bit.”

Chinn, at 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, has been utilized as a Swiss Army knife before—having lined up from all over the field during his three-year pro tenure. His best campaign, however, came when he was closer to the line of scrimmage in 2021—where he was stationed in the box a career-high 510 times and off the edge (in another career-high) 119 times.

This past year saw Chinn deployed more into the secondary. 2022 was the only season in which he tallied more looks from the free safety and slot spots than he did from the front seven.

But, as Evero stated in his introductory press conference back on Feb. 22, his goal is to make the system fit the players. And as far as Chinn is concerned, he’ll be fitting right in right away.

Panthers’ addition of Vonn Bell should benefit Jeremy Chinn

With the Panthers’ reported signing of Vonn Bell, Jeremy Chinn should once again have the opportunity to thrive from the box.

Days after trading for the ability to choose their quarterback of the future in the 2023 NFL draft, the Carolina Panthers bolstered an important position on the other side of the ball—by agreeing to a deal with free agent safety Vonn Bell.

Bell, a seven-year veteran, is coming off an impressive season—one where he totaled 77 tackles, four interceptions, four quarterback hits and two forced fumbles for the Cincinnati Bengals. He also, according to Pro Football Focus, allowed a 65.1 passer rating against opposing quarterbacks—which is, by far, the best mark of his pro tenure.

Throughout his career, the 28-year-old has not only proved his worth as a consistent presence—having played in 109 of a possible 114 games—but as a force against the run and, now, a ball-hawking back. And because of that, we have an unlikely winner in this deal—fellow safety Jeremy Chinn.

Since the Panthers drafted him in 2020, Chinn has served as a versatile defensive weapon for the team—floating between linebacker and safety. There has, however, been a clear difference in his play at each position—as he thrived closer to the line of scrimmage and sometimes struggled when he was positioned deeper into the secondary.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound defender, in fact, had his most effective season the year he was allowed to play a bit more as a backer. That came in 2021—where he earned career-high PFF grades in overall defense (71.4), run defense (62.5), tackling (70.4) and coverage (74.3)

When he’s further away from the middle of the defense, Chinn tends to make less of an impact. But with Bell in the fold and Xavier Woods already established, Chinn should have even more opportunities to be a disruptor from the box.

Oh, and he seems to like the sound of that . . .

Eagles reportedly almost drafted Jeremy Chinn over Jalen Hurts

According to FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, the Eagles were very close to drafting Panthers S Jeremy Chinn over Jalen Hurts back in 2020.

If the Philadelphia Eagles didn’t sleep on a certain decision a few years back, then today’s big game may look a lot different. And funny enough, that decision involved Carolina Panthers safety Jeremy Chinn.

During Fox’s pregame coverage for Super Bowl LVII, insider Jay Glazer dropped a pretty intriguing nugget about Chinn, quarterback Jalen Hurts and the 2020 NFL draft. According to Glazer, the Eagles were close to selecting Chinn with the 53rd overall pick — but switched to Hurts the morning of the second round.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

In the span of three years, Hurts became an MVP candidate and led the Eagles to a Super Bowl appearance.

Carolina, who scooped Chinn up 11 spots later, got themselves a solid safety with the draft’s 64th overall pick.

By the way, did anyone else hear that collective sigh of relief in parts of Philly and Glendale?

4 Panthers who will benefit most from the hiring of DC Ejiro Evero

Panthers defenders should still be smiling over the addition of Ejiro Evero. But which ones should be smiling the widest?

On Sunday, the Carolina Panthers hired Ejiro Evero as their new defensive coordinator—a move that was celebrated by fans and experts alike. The brilliant signing of the brilliant young play caller now adds to an already impressive coaching staff for Frank Reich, whose players should be smiling ear to ear about their team’s offseason thus far.

But which players should be smiling most? Here are four Panthers who will benefit most from the hiring of Evero.

Best and worst PFF grades from Panthers’ Week 15 loss to Steelers

Sam Darnold was the Panthers’ second-highest graded player on offense in the team’s Week 15 loss to the Steelers.

If we’re grading the Carolina Panthers on how well they defended the Bank on Sunday, those marks wouldn’t be too high. So, let’s just leave the grading to the folks who are known for it.

Here, courtesy of Pro Football Focus, are the best and worst from the Panthers in their Week 15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Top takeaways from Panthers’ Week 11 snap counts

In his first game back from a six-week absence, Panthers S Jeremy Chinn played in each of his defense’s 69 snaps.

Since the Carolina Panthers showed out on defense against the Baltimore Ravens, let’s put a snap-count spotlight on their Week 11 performance.

So, in an all-defense edition, here are the top takeaways from Sunday’s playing time.

Panthers will have Jaycee Horn, Jeremy Chinn active vs. Ravens in Week 11

The Panthers will have CB Jaycee Horn and S Jeremy Chinn for their Week 11 matchup against the Ravens.

The Carolina Panthers will be without a solid chunk of their secondary this afternoon against the Baltimore Ravens. But at least they’ll have two of their unit’s studs in uniform.

Cornerback Jaycee Horn and safety Jeremy Chinn will be active for today’s Week 11 matchup.

Horn was listed on Friday’s final injury report as questionable due to a foot injury. Chinn, who has missed the last six games after sustaining a hamstring injury, was activated to the 53-man roster on Saturday afternoon.

Carolina won’t have safety Juston Burris, versatile defensive back Myles Hartsfield or starting cornerback Donte Jackson—who has been placed on injured reserve with a season-ending Achilles tendon tear. To help provide some depth—veteran T.J. Carrie, a practice squad addition from earlier in the week, has been elevated for the contest.

Here’s who will also be out for the Panthers in Baltimore:

  • OT Larnel Coleman
  • WR Rashard Higgins
  • DT Matt Ioannidis
  • TE Giovanni Ricci
  • QB PJ Walker

And for the Ravens:

  • CB Jalyn Armour-Davis
  • LB Josh Bynes
  • G Ben Cleveland
  • RB Gus Edwards
  • TE Charlie Kolar
  • LB David Ojabo

Panthers S Jeremy Chinn activated to 53-man roster

Jeremy Chinn is back for the Panthers in Week 11.

Just a few hours ago, the Carolina Panthers passed down some bad news about defensive back Myles Hartsfield—who will miss Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. But some (major) help is back on the way.

As announced by the team late Saturday afternoon, safety Jeremy Chinn has been activated to the 53-man roster. Chinn had missed the better part of the last seven games due to a hamstring injury.

The setback occurred early on in the Week 4 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, when the third-year defender was removed from the outing following just six snaps. He’d later be placed on injured reserve and sat out the next six contests as a result.

The Panthers also signed linebacker Joel Iyiegbuniwe to the active roster while also elevating cornerback T.J. Carrie and defensive tackle Phil Hoskins from the practice squad. Linebacker Arron Mosby has been waived to make room.

4 key matchups to watch for Panthers vs. Ravens in Week 11

How will the Panthers contain Lamar Jackson? A big part of that answer sits in the middle of their defense.

Can the Carolina Panthers, fresh off a win and a mini-bye week, pull off the big upset victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday?

If they do, here are four key matchups that’ll play a role in it.
