Ohio State social media reacts to the Jeremiah Smith early signing period drama

What a fun day it was, and social media was there for it all. #GoBucks

Whew. If this is the new normal with name, image and likeness and the high stakes of big-time college football recruiting, I’m not sure some media members are going to last in the business.

By now, you know all of the drama surrounding Ohio State’s crown jewel of the 2024 recruiting class, wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, the No.1 overall prospect. You know the story by now, but the CliffsNotes version is he was reportedly torn between Ohio State and Miami (Florida), chose the Buckeyes on a national video stream, but then waited hours upon hours to fax (yes, fax) in his national letter of intent.

But, hey, at least it came and cemented his commitment that had been out there for a year, so that the coaches and Buckeye Nation can breathe one heck of a collective, deep sigh.

As with any story with viral momentum, social media was all over it and we were there for it. In fact, we’ve pulled out some of the best posts on X, formerly Twitter, to share with you.

Here are some of the most noteworthy and best social media posts surrounding the day in the life of recruiting — and ultimately signing — Smith.

Jeremiah Smith officially sends in national letter of intent to join 2024 recruiting class

Finally in the fold. #GoBucks

After roughly a 24-hour period of several twists and turns, many of which we may never know, the No. 1 recruit in the 2024 cycle, wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, has finally sent in his national letter of intent and is officially a part of this year’s Ohio State football recruiting class.

Smith had been committed to OSU ever since last December and appeared to be a lock to join the class. Even leading up to the early signing period, he was saying all of the right things despite going on several other recruiting visits to other schools, basically just enjoying the experience.

As things got closer to Wednesday however, rumors began to circulate that Smith was beginning to waffle and begin to look at Florida State and Miami (FL) very hard. In fact, even up until his announcement of recommitting to the Buckeyes, he himself said he had an Ohio State and Miami hat in the bag and decided on OSU one final time with just two minutes to spare.

After that announcement, all of Buckeye Nation rejoiced with a class that was more than salvaged after Ohio State held on to two No. 5 prospects despite the wolves encircling the efforts.

But that’s when all the drama started.

The OSU creative team released graphics throughout the day as the football program received each commits national letter of intent, but we never saw one for Smith. 1 p.m ET turned into 3 p.m., and then 5 p.m. and late into the evening. More smoke began to bellow out that Smith was again considering staying home in South Florida and flipping his commitment to Miami to play with some of his teammates that also committed there.

And so we waited. And waited. And waited some more.

Until now. What could be a generational talent at the wide receiver position found a fax machine, warmed it up, and sent it to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

And we all rejoiced.

Now, as Smith’s tweet stated just after he recommitted on national streaming video, “let’s get to work.” That should begin on January 7 when Smith arrives on campus.

Ryan Day’s fake fainting reaction to learning the No. 1 Signing Day prospect was joining Ohio State is priceless

Ryan Day is every Ohio State fan right now.

Do you know what the most underrated part of National Signing Day is? It’s the fact that they usually learn that players are signing on with their programs at the same time we do.

That means, up until the moment it gets announced, they’re in the dark just like the rest of us are — especially when it comes to the top recruits in the class.

It’s extremely stressful, I’m sure. But, hey, man. Guess what? I wouldn’t know. I’m not a coach! My job isn’t to worry — it’s to watch them worry and turn it into amazing content. Shoutout to Ryan Day for feeding the machine.

The Ohio State head coach learned that Jeremiah Smith, the top recruit of the 2024 class, is committing to a future with the Buckeyes.

Day found out while at a press conference and you can just see all the relief hit him at once. He can’t even say actual words in the moment. He doesn’t even remember what question he was asked.

All he knows is that Ohio State is getting Smith and he’s stoked.

Mans went from this:

To this:

He even acted like he was about to faint after getting the news. All in a matter of seconds. This is what National Signing Day looks like, folks. It’s chaos. It’s joy. It’s pain. All wrapped into a single day.

May it last forever.

Watch: Ohio State head coach Ryan Day ‘faints when told 5-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has signed

Jeremiah Smith made it official to Ohio State on Wednesday.

After weeks and months of speculation, Jeremiah Smith signed with Ohio State on Wednesday on the first day of the early signing period. The five-star wide receiver had been rumored to be a flip candidate to Florida State.

And for Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, it led to an opportunity to poke fun at the situation.

Smith is one of the top recruits in the nation if not the best athlete in the country. This past fall as a senior at No. 2 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Florida), he had 1,389 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns on 90 receptions.

And despite being a verbal to Ohio State since last December, Smith certainly did more than just entertain other suitors.

He went on unofficial visits and had plenty of fun seeking social media engagement from other fanbases.

But early on Wednesday afternoon, while Day was at the podium talking about the class of 2024, Smith signed with Ohio State. And the media had the opportunity to watch Day in real-time react to the news:

According to ESPN, Smith is a five-star wide receiver and the No. 7 recruit in the nation.

Here is the moment that Smith made it official.

Bigtime get for Day and the Buckeyes.

Day seemed relieved, to say the least

The No. 1 overall prospect in the country is officially an Ohio State Buckeye.

Florida wide receiver, [autotag]Jeremiah Smith[/autotag], who saw rumors leading up to the early signing period of other schools trying to flip him from his Buckeye commitment, stayed the course and in the class.

An interesting part of the timing of his official announcement — even though he was already verbally committed — was that head coach Ryan Day was meeting with the media to discuss the 2024 Ohio State signees. The sigh of relief can visibly be shown on the Buckeyes leader’s face, as he flashes a huge smile keeping the No. 1 overall prospect in the country according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

It seems like every should have had the same reaction as Day did, as it was a bit up in the air what Smith would do leading into the first day of the early signing period.

Now it’s time to take stock in what class Ohio State brought in, develop them, and get back atop the Big Ten and compete for national titles.

You could hear all of Buckeye Nation’s sigh of relief with his announcement

It was a bit concerning leading up to Florida wide receiver [autotag]Jeremiah Smith[/autotag]’s official announcement of where he would play college football, but in the end Ohio State kept him in the fray.

There were rumors that he could be wavering from his original commitment to the Buckeyes which he made over a year ago. Miami came on hard at the end, as did Florida State, but Ohio State kept the course and ultimately won out for the No. 1 overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

After a difficult last few recruiting days, this is a huge sigh of relief for the Buckeyes’ coaching staff and fans alike. Watch below as Smith makes it official and stays with his commitment to “The Ohio State University.”

Smith could be the next in a long line of superb wide receivers do don the scarlet and gray, and it’s a sliver of good news in a week when other big-time commitments have flipped.

Is Jeremiah Smith ready to (tomahawk) chop Ohio State?

Jeremiah Smith could be trending towards a recruiting flip.

Five-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith is sure making waves like a change in his recruitment could be coming. The Ohio State verbal is set for an official visit this weekend to Florida State.

This visit will be a week after Smith wore Florida State gloves during his final high school game, a 56-0 win by Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Florida),  over Clearwater Central Catholic (Clearwater, Florida) in the state playoffs. Chaminade-Madonna finished the season ranked second-overall in the USA TODAY HSS Super 25.

On the season, Smith had 77 catches for 1,206 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns.

He is a consensus top-five recruit in the nation. Smith has been committed to Ohio State for nearly a year, having given his verbal on Dec. 14.

Smith was recently named the No. 1 player in the nation by Rivals.

Now, going on an official visit to Florida State is not good news for Smith’s commitment to Ohio State. Nor is wearing Florida State gloves during his playoff game.

There is a reason why Smith is at the center of such an intense recruiting battle. He not only has been productive at the college level but his physical tools are very impressive.

A 6-foot-3, 200-pounds, Smith has great size and length. He is a physical wide receiver who catches the ball at its highest point and is elusive when in the open field.

He has long been considered a possible flip to Florida State, but that talk has intensified over the past three months.

Check it out: Jeremiah Smith is the No. 1 wide receiver in the nation…is he also the No. 1 quarterback?

Jeremiah Smith is a most unique talent.

Jeremiah Smith is a special talent and has a legitimate claim to be the top recruit in the nation. The Ohio State football commit is a five-star wide receiver who on Friday showed himself to be a five-star quarterback.

And also a five-star running back for No. 2 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Florida), who once again looked unstoppable.

Maybe the game plan for Ohio State football and head coach Ryan Day next fall to beat Michigan is to line Smith under center, have him heave the ball down the field and then let him run down the field and make his own catch.

Based off of the athleticism here, it might just work. According to 247Sports, Smith is the top-ranked player in the nation.

In Friday night’s thorough 47-7 win over Archbishop Carroll, Smith started the game with a touchdown throw off a trick play:

And then midway through the third quarter, he took a direct snap and went 65 yards for a touchdown. Impressive stuff from Smith, who is just such a unique athlete.

Florida looking to get nation’s top WR back on campus ahead of signing period

After attending his third Florida game of the season, five-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith could work in one more trip to Gainesville before the early signing period.

The top wide receiver in the recruiting class of 2024, [autotag]Jeremiah Smith[/autotag], might be committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes, but he spent yet another weekend in Gainesville watching the Gators.

Swamp247’s Donovan Keiser caught with the top-ranked recruit after the visit, and it’s clear that Florida is still very much in play less than a month away from the start of the early signing period.

“(Florida) had a great season,” Smith said. “Every game I came to, I liked what I saw. Quarterback play, receiver play. Eugene Wilson had a great season as a freshman. They just have to keep it going.”

Smith predicted that Ricky Pearsall would hear his name called in the first round of the upcoming NFL draft, so it is clear that he believes in the program’s ability to develop and prepare players for the next level.

The goal is to get Smith back in Gainesville one more time before the start of the signing period on Dec. 20. Smith says he is “taking it day by day” and admitted that he’s ready for the process to reach a conclusion.

With the season officially over, all eyes will be on Smith (and a few other recruiting targets) for the next month or so.

Smith is a consensus five-star recruit, ranked No. 1 in the nation on the On3 industry ranking. ESPN has him at No. 7 overall, which is the absolute lowest he is rated. Whichever program lands him should be getting a generational talent.

5-star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith continues to shine for No. 2 Chaminade-Madonna

Jeremiah Smith makes a strong touchdown catch for Chaminade-Madonna.

The most complete wide receiver to come out of high school in the last five years, Jeremiah Smith put together a very nice performance in his playoff game on Friday night. The Ohio State football commit is truly an elite talent.

No. 2 Chaminade-Madonna (Hollywood, Florida), behind a strong performance from Smith, rolled to a 40-0 win over Cardinal Newman (West Palm Beach, Florida) in the 2023 FHSAA Football State Championships.

Smith, a five-star wide receiver, made a tremendous touchdown catch on Saturday night, battling off Kevin Levy to make the catch. Levy is a three-star defensive back who is committed to Rutgers.

Committed to Ohio State, there have been rumors that Smith could be a candidate to flip. Florida State is presumed to be the program with the inside track to get Smith if he re-opens his commitment.

According to 247Sports, Smith is the top-ranked player in the nation.

On Friday night, Smith had eight catches for 107 yards with a touchdown.

And here is another look at Smith’s touchdown catch, where he physically out-muscled his coverage for the touchdown.
