Jaguars announce contract extension for DL Jeremiah Ledbetter

Jeremiah Ledbetter, who appeared in all 17 regular season games for the Jaguars last year, is back on a new deal, the team announced.

The Jacksonville Jaguars announced contract extensions for three players Friday. While deals for special teamer Daniel Thomas and offensive lineman Ezra Cleveland were already reported, a third deal for defensive lineman Jeremiah Ledbetter was revealed.

Ledbetter, who turns 30 in May, joined the Jaguars in 2021 as a member of the practice squad after prior stints with the Detroit Lions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens, and Arizona Cardinals. After spending most of 2022 on Jacksonville’s practice squad, he earned a spot on the team’s 53-man roster in 2023 with a strong showing in training camp and preseason.

He was active for all 17 of the Jaguars’ regular season games in 2023 and recorded 24 tackles, one tackle for loss, one fumble recovery, and one tipped pass.

Earlier in the week, the Jaguars released defensive lineman Folorunso Fatukasi in a move to save just over $3.5 million in salary cap space.

Details of the contract for Ledbetter have not yet been revealed.

5 Jaguars bubble players who have earned a roster spot

These five Jaguars players were on the bubble at the beginning of camp, but secured their place on the 53-man roster with a strong August.

The Jacksonville Jaguars didn’t have a ton of roster turnover during the 2023 offseason. The team kept 21 of its 22 starters, allowing only offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor to leave in free agency.

Even backups like C.J. Beathard, JaMycal Hasty, Adam Gotsis, and others were brought back. That left very little room for newcomers and other bubble players to earn spots on one of the NFL’s deeper rosters.

These five Jaguars players entered August seemingly in a fight for a place on the team’s 53-man roster. But with cutdown day coming Tuesday they now have little to worry about after securing their spots in camp and preseason:

Veteran DL Jeremiah Ledbetter hoping to ‘make a home’ with Jaguars

After bouncing around a few rosters and rarely seeing the field, Jeremiah Ledbetter is hoping he’ll stick with the Jaguars for a while.

Jeremiah Ledbetter spent time on four different NFL rosters, including two separate stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, before signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021. The veteran defensive lineman is hoping he won’t be suiting up for a sixth team any time soon.

“Not everybody is with one team their whole career,” Ledbetter told News4Jax on Tuesday. “They travel and do what they need to do, but you know what, I think that’s very huge for me to make a home here in Jacksonville and just make plays for this team so I can call this home.”

Ledbetter, 29, is a lock for the 53-man roster after a strong camp and a dominant preseason. In the Jaguars’ 25-7 win against the Detroit Lions, the lineman was unstoppable and earned a 95.2 grade from PFF, more than 11 points higher than any other player on the team.

With DaVon Hamilton nursing a back issue, the Jaguars could lean on Ledbetter’s contributions into the regular season too.

“He’s a guy that is like a pocketknife, he can do a little bit of everything,” Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell said of Ledbetter on Wednesday. “Whatever you need him to do, he can play the nose, he can play a 3-technique, he can play a 5-technique, he has pass rush ability inside.

“He’s a guy that has a variety of different talents and now he’s starting to master his talent. It’s starting to show. He had a great game for us the other night, he had a solid camp and he’s someone that right now we need to continue to improve and get better.”

During his rookie season with the Detroit Lions in 2017, Ledbetter was on the field for 469 total snaps. In the next five seasons, he was on the field for just 84 snaps, including only 11 with the Jaguars. That seems set to change in 2023 as Ledbetter appears to have finally found a place in Jacksonville.

5 studs and 3 duds from the Jaguars’ 25-7 win vs. Lions

With Jaguars starters watching from the sideline, which players made a strong push for a spot on the roster and who took a step backward?

The Jacksonville Jaguars breezed through the Detroit Lions on Saturday, tripling their opponent’s total yardage in a 25-7 win.

But preseason results don’t matter nearly as much as the individual performances of players battling to climb the depth chart. With Jaguars starters watching from the sideline, Saturday night was largely about players trying to prove why they deserve a spot on the 53-man roster.

Here are five players who stood out from the rest and three who took a step in the wrong direction:

Jaguars 2023 roster review: DL Jeremiah Ledbetter

Jeremiah Ledbetter has been with the Jaguars since 2021, but he’s hardly seen the field. Could that change in 2023?

The brunt of the offseason is in the books and training camp is underway. Join us for a player-by-player review of the Jaguars roster ahead of the 2023 season.

Jeremiah Ledbetter has played a grand total of 11 snaps for the Jacksonville Jaguars. But the defensive lineman is now entering his third season with the team and has quietly — extremely quietly — become a veteran of the franchise.

Originally a sixth-round pick of the Detroit Lions in 2017, Ledbetter had two stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers along with brief stretches on the Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals practice squads.

Ledbetter joined the Jaguars in November 2021, joining the practice squad where he remained for the rest of that season. After getting cut in camp prior to the 2022 season, Jacksonville added him to the practice squad in October and elevated him to the active roster in December.

Contract (2023): $1,010,000 base salary, $1,010,000 cap hit.

Acquired: The Jaguars signed Ledbetter to the practice squad on Nov. 1, 2021.

Jaguars bring back two former players as practice squad additions

The Jaguars brought back two former players who were cut by the team in August.

The Jacksonville Jaguars brought back defensive lineman Jeremiah Ledbetter and outside linebacker Rashod Berry, adding both players to the practice squad Wednesday..

Ledbetter, 28, is a former Detroit Lions sixth-round pick who spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Baltimore Ravens, and Arizona Cardinals before joining the Jaguars in November 2021. In August, he landed on Jacksonville’s injured reserve with an undisclosed injury. Less than two weeks later, he was released from the IR with an injury settlement.

Berry, 25, spent the first two seasons of his career with the New England Patriots and the Lions. He joined the Jaguars in May 2022, but was cut by the team at the end of training camp.

Jacksonville had two vacant practice squad spots after promoting defensive lineman Corey Peters to the active roster Wednesday and cutting defensive lineman Israel Antwine from the practice squad Tuesday. With the changes, the Jaguars’ current practice squad is as follows:

  • WR Kevin Austin Jr.
  • OLB Rashod Berry
  • OT Coy Cronk
  • CB Gregory Junior
  • DL Jeremiah Ledbetter
  • K James McCourt
  • WR Jaylon Moore
  • OL Jimmy Murray
  • S Ayo Oyelola
  • QB E.J. Perry
  • TE Gerrit Prince
  • RB Mekhi Sargent
  • LB Ty Summers
  • S John Thompson
  • DT Nick Thurman
  • OL Darryl Williams
  • WR Seth Williams

Jacksonville Jaguars select Montaric Brown in seventh round

Montaric Brown is heading to Jacksonville! He’s the fifth Razorback in history to be selected by Jacksonville, and the first since 2016, when the Jags selected Brandon Allen in the sixth round of the 2016 draft.

[autotag]Montaric Brown[/autotag] has become the third Razorback taken in the 2022 NFL Draft, as has been selected in the seventh round by the Jacksonville Jaguars, as the 222nd overall pick.

Brown is the second pick from Arkansas to be selected on the final day of the draft, joining [autotag]John Ridgeway[/autotag], who was selected by the Dallas Cowboys with the 178th overall pick.

Brown becomes the fifth player from Arkansas to be drafted by Jaguars, and the first since Brandon Allen, who was selected 201st overall in the 2016 draft. If Brown signs with the Jags, he will become teammates with former Razorback Jeremiah Ledbetter, who plays defensive end for Jacksonville.

When it comes to drafting former Razorbacks, Jacksonville has usually gone the offensive route. Allen, as well as Matt Jones (2005), and Emanuel Smith (2000) were offensive players taken by the Jaguars. Brown is just the second defensive player from Arkansas to be drafted by Jacksonville, the first being Chris Smith, who was drafted with the 159th pick in the 2014 draft.

Brown had a breakout season for Arkansas in 2021. The Ashdown, Ark. native started in all 13 games, and recorded career-bests in total tackles (54), pass deflections (11), and interceptions (5).

Throughout his five-year career at Arkansas, Brown made 132 total tackles, forced two fumbles, and picked off seven passes.

Jags make a few practice squad moves to begin Week 9

Jacksonville added defensive lineman Jeremiah Ledbetter to its practice squad, among several other moves.

Jacksonville’s 31-7 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon was one the team will want to forget about quickly. Unfortunately, with Buffalo coming to town next week, the road only gets tougher.

On Monday, the Jaguars made a couple of roster moves after the game involving their practice squad. The first was signing defensive end Jeremiah Ledbetter, who is a free agent that was most recently on the Arizona Cardinals practice squad until he was released last week.

A former sixth-round pick out of Arkansas in 2017, Ledbetter saw the bulk of his playing time come with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, and he has 18 tackles and a sack on his career.

Further, offensive lineman Badara Traore was restored to the practice squad from the practice squad injured reserve list. Traore, an undrafted pickup for Chicago last year, has only appeared in one NFL game.

To help clear space on the practice squad, the team released receiver Josh Imatorbhebhe. The former Illinois player is an undrafted rookie who the Jags signed this offseason, but he suffered an injury during the preseason and was released on Aug. 26. He rejoined the practice squad on Oct. 12, but it seems he’ll be looking for a new home once again.
