The three stars the Lakers could pursue in 2023 free agency

The Lakers could be going after some pretty big fish next summer. But is such a strategy the best one for returning to title contention?

There is a growing feeling that this year’s edition of the Los Angeles Lakers will be significantly better than last year’s disastrous iteration was.

If anything, they will be far more competitive this year, with a renewed emphasis on defense, fast-break basketball and attention to detail.

But no one is expecting the Purple and Gold to contend for the NBA championship.

They seem to be a couple of pieces short of being able to do so, and to that end, people around the league feel they are targeting the missing piece in free agency next summer.

There have already been reports that Los Angeles intends to go after Kyrie Irving at that time, but there could be at least two other big-name targets.

Via Lakers Daily:

“One NBA executive believes the Lakers will be interested in players like Kyrie Irving, Jerami Grant, Myles Turner and Andrew Wiggins.

“‘No matter what [the Lakers] do with trades or however they reconstruct this year, they are going to keep an eye on next summer,’ the executive told Heavy.com. ‘That is where they have a lot invested, being able to get another star-type player next summer.’

“‘They’re going to look at Kyrie Irving, of course, but he is probably not their top choice. They will look at Jerami Grant, who they liked for a long time, same with Myles Turner. I think Andrew Wiggins would be a big prize there because he can play two-ways.'”

For the Lakers to sign one of these players, they will need to clear lots of salary cap space next summer, and it could interfere with their efforts to maximize this year’s roster.

Every player in Philadelphia 76ers history who has worn No. 39

Here is a list of every player in Philadelphia 76ers history who has ever worn the No. 39 uniform.

It’s summertime in the NBA, so it’s time to learn some history. The Philadelphia 76ers are one of the older franchises in the NBA. Their history dates to the 1949-50 season.

With that longevity, the team has had hundreds of players come through the City of Brotherly Love. Sixers Wire looks at the No. 39, which has been worn by only two of those players in the history of the franchise.

This running series will go through all of the uniform numbers worn in franchise history. The previous edition of this series was a list compiling the 11 players who have worn the No. 40.

Here is the list of those two players who have worn No. 39 in Sixers history:

In 2021-22, the Blazers had a miserable season (27-55) in which they snapped a streak of eight straight years of making the playoffs. The last time Portland missed the postseason, Damian Lillard was a rookie.

After a makeover, Portland is hoping to get back in the mix of the playoffs and please Lillard. Newly anointed general manager Joe Cronin made his big offseason move by acquiring Olympic champion Jerami Grant, formerly of the Detroit Pistons, but there will be other changes in the depth chart.

Josh Hart had a hilarious reaction to Jerami Grant taking his number in ESPN’s Blazers jersey edit

Josh Hart doesn’t want to give up his number!

The Detroit Pistons will reportedly trade Jerami Grant to the Portland Trail Blazers, per ESPN, and they didn’t have to trade their first-round pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.

This was a bold move by Portland’s front office, which as of recently, is led by general manager Joe Cronin and assistant general manager Mike Schmitz. Grant, who averaged 19.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game last season, is a valuable addition to the frontcourt for the Blazers.

Damian Lillard, who isn’t running from the grind and is expected to stay with the organization rather than ask for a trade, will benefit from Grant’s addition to the team.

But not everyone on the roster was immediately thrilled about the move.

Josh Hart was acquired by the Blazers back in February, and he literally swapped houses with former Portland forward Larry Nance Jr. after the deal.

Hart wore No. 11 when he join the team, and ESPN’s edit of Grant on the Blazers depicted him wearing that exact number. The craziest part: Grant didn’t even wear No. 11 on the Pistons! He wore No. 9 in Detroit and on the Denver Nuggets, too.

Cronin called Hart a “keeper” and the former Villanova star is expected to remain with the organization during the post-CJ McCollum rebuild. With such seniority, you would expect he would be able to keep his number rather than swap it out for someone who may not even want it.

For what it’s worth, if Jerami were to change his number, he may have a fun incentive. Jerami’s father, Harvey, played for the Blazers in the 1990s. During that time, he wore No. 44, so perhaps Jerami may want to rock it as a tribute.

Mock trade has Sixers acquiring Jerami Grant, Kelly Olynyk from Pistons

A mock trade has the Philadelphia 76ers acquiring Jerami Grant and Kelly Olynyk from the Detroit Pistons.

The offseason is officially here in the NBA and now is the time for teams to begin making moves to prepare for the next season. After falling in Round 2 for the fourth time in five seasons, the Philadelphia 76ers want to get themselves in a better position led by Joel Embiid and James Harden.

There are some needs the Sixers have at the moment and they mostly deal with the bench unit. Philadelphia needs some depth at both the wing position and at the backup center spot. While young Charles Bassey and Paul Reed are there to back up Embiid, the Sixers would prefer a veteran option who is ready to win now.

A new mock trade from The Rights to Ricky Sanchez has the Sixers filling both needs as they have Philadelphia calling up the Detroit Pistons to get Jerami Grant and Kelly Olynyk:

Report: Pistons not getting many formal offers for Lakers target Jerami Grant

This Los Angeles Lakers trade target currently has a quiet trade market, according to a report.

While the Los Angeles Lakers look to bolster the roster, there have been many reported trade targets for the squad.

One constant name is Detroit Pistons forward Jerami Grant. Solid veterans on rebuilding teams tend to gain traction as the trade deadline nears, and Grant is the latest trend for many teams looking to contend.

The 6-foot-8 forward with a 7-foot-3 wingspan would definitely strengthen the Lakers, but acquiring him won’t be easy since multiple teams are expected to be in the race.

However, according to James Edward III of The Athletic, there haven’t been many formal offers for Grant:

Now, in regard to Grant and the trade market, I’ve gathered that the offers aren’t pouring in right now. The majority of the chatter and interest you’ve heard in regard to Grant are more conversations than anything concrete. I do expect that to change as the deadline gets closer, but as of now, from my understanding, not many formal offers have been placed in front of Detroit.

No formal offers don’t necessarily mean there haven’t been informal discussions or negotiating starting points. But Detroit also doesn’t need to cave and part with Grant if there aren’t any plausible options on the table.

The Lakers’ offer of Talen Horton-Tucker, Kendrick Nunn and a 2027 first-round pick doesn’t seem to move the needle for now, so it’ll be interesting to see if the Lakers go this route.
