NBA insider gives a potential Lakers trade package for Jerami Grant

Would you give up this suggested offer for two-way Trail Blazers forward Jerami Grant?

We’re now a full month into the NBA’s official free agency and player movement period, and still, the Los Angeles Lakers haven’t brought in any outside players.

At best, their roster is only about as good as it was this past season when they won 47 regular-season games and lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Denver Nuggets. While many have opined that Los Angeles is no better than a play-in tournament team, a more rational analysis reveals that it is likely a legitimate playoff team.

Of course, L.A. doesn’t seem to be a championship-caliber team by any means. Therefore, it has reportedly expressed interest in Portland Trail Blazers two-way forward Jerami Grant.

While a report indicated he could cost two future first-round draft picks, NBA reporter Jake Weinbach said on X (formerly Twitter) that an offer could consist of Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent and Cam Reddish, as well as the Lakers’ 2029 first-round draft pick (h/t The Cold Wire).

That looks like a reasonable offer for Grant, a 6-foot-7, 30-year-old forward who averaged 21.0 points a game and shot 40.2% from 3-point range this past season. He’s also regarded as a very good and versatile defender, and the Lakers certainly need such a wing player who has length and athleticism.

Hachimura is a good player, but his production is inconsistent and his defense is limited. Vincent is a strong defender but limited offensively, and Reddish is very, very limited overall.

The question is whether Grant would move the needle enough. But if he would, such a trade would allow the Lakers to still deal D’Angelo Russell and their 2031 first-rounder for another impact player.

Buha: Portland doesn’t want D’Angelo Russell in potential Jerami Grant trade

It won’t be easy for the Lakers to land forward Jerami Grant from the Trail Blazers.

Although the Los Angeles Lakers haven’t made any moves this summer other than to sign their two draft picks, there is still time for them to do something to upgrade their roster.

There do have a few rumored trade targets, including Portland Trail Blazers forward Jerami Grant. Grant averaged 21.0 points a game this past season and has become a very good 3-point shooter, not to mention a very capable defender.

Right now, the one big trade chip the Lakers have in the form of a player is starting point guard D’Angelo Russell. Russell recently opted into the final year of his contract, and the team reportedly has been looking to trade him.

But Jovan Buha of The Athletic said in a recent episode of “Buha’s Block” that the Blazers aren’t interested in taking back Russell in a potential trade that would send Grant to Los Angeles (h/t Lakers Daily).

“I’ve heard Portland doesn’t want D-Lo because they have a million guards anyway,” Buha said. “So, it just doesn’t really make sense for them.”

Acquiring Grant would likely be very expensive for L.A., especially in terms of the draft picks such a deal would require. But that is the state of the current NBA, where good players who have never been All-Stars, such as Mikal Bridges, have recently been traded for lots of draft capital.

Buha: The Blazers want two first-round draft picks for Jerami Grant

If the Lakers want to land Jerami Grant from the Trail Blazers, they may have to give up an arm and a leg.

Portland Trail Blazers forward Jerami Grant has been mentioned as a potential trade target of the Los Angeles Lakers for some time now. A 6-foot-7 forward, Grant is effective and versatile on the defensive end, and he has also become a legitimate scoring threat on the other end.

He averaged 21.0 points a game while hitting 40.2% of his 3-point attempts this past season. If he would accept a somewhat reduced role as a third or even a fourth option in Los Angeles, perhaps he could play a major factor in getting the team back to championship contention.

However, the price may not be right as far as the Lakers are concerned. According to Jovan Buha of The Athletic, Portland wants two first-round draft picks for Grant.

The Lakers have a limited amount of draft capital available for use in a trade. When one considers they have other roster deficiencies besides a two-way wing, perhaps giving up two future first-rounders for Grant, a player who has never been named to the All-Star team, may not be the best idea.

Zach Lowe’s quip about the Lakers’ interest in Jerami Grant

What did Zach Lowe mean by his comment about Jerami Grant and the Lakers?

Although it may not seem like it, there are indications the Los Angeles Lakers are still trying to pull off a trade this summer. With about two months to go before the start of training camp, there is still time for them to do so and significantly upgrade their roster, although they also don’t have all the time in the world.

They have several rumored trade targets, one of which is Portland Trail Blazers forward Jerami Grant. While he averaged 21.0 points a game this past season and is an effective 3-point shooter and defender, people seem to be a bit divided on where he’s the right man for Los Angeles to use its limited trade capital on.

Podcaster Zach Lowe quipped that it may be time to get those Grant Lakers jerseys ready (h/t Lakers Daily).

“Should we start printing the Jerami Grant-Lakers jerseys, by the way?” Lowe posed. “Should we just do it now? I think we — I might order one.”

At face value, it seems Lowe’s comment may have been a sarcastic one. At the same time, trades involving the Lakers have often come out of nowhere, with the news mill being quiet in the days leading up to such trades.

One can never be sure exactly what general manager Rob Pelinka may have up his sleeve — or if he’s simply twiddling his thumbs and doing nothing, as many fans have accused him of doing lately.

NBA insider names eight potential trade targets for the Lakers

Who could the Lakers go after in a trade either this summer or before this winter’s trade deadline?

At this point in the offseason, after the Los Angeles Lakers failed to sign any free agents, the only way they can upgrade their roster is through a trade. While they have a good roster that should make the playoffs if they stay relatively healthy, they don’t seem to be championship contenders by any stretch.

The Lakers’ needs are (in no particular order) an upgrade in terms of a ball-handling guard with better quickness and defense, a 3-and-D wing and a serviceable defensive center.

According to NBA insider Jake Weinbach, there are eight players to watch as far as possible trade targets for Los Angeles: Darius Garland, Bruce Brown, Collin Sexton, Lauri Markkanen, Jerami Grant, Cam Johnson, Dorian Finney-Smith and Wendell Carter Jr.

Carter is someone who could solve the Lakers’ need for another legitimate center other than Anthony Davis. Although he has been injury-prone, he has shown the ability to rebound and occasionally hit 3-pointers.

Garland and Sexton would represent possible backcourt upgrades for the Lakers, while Brown, Johnson and Finney-Smith are intriguing 3-and-D wings.

Grant is someone the Lakers have been rumored to have serious interest in this summer. Having averaged 21.0 points a game this past summer, he could give them a legitimate third scoring option and another 3-point sniper, and he’s also a pretty good defender.

Markkanen would be the loftiest target on this list. He put up 24.5 points and 8.4 rebounds a game over the last two seasons while making the All-Star team in the 2022-23 campaign, and a number of teams are thought to be after his services.

The Lakers have limited trade assets, but their upcoming first-round draft picks in 2029 and 2031 could be seen as valuable by some other team.

Insider: Lakers are in trade talks for five players, including Kyle Kuzma

The Lakers reportedly haven’t given up on improving their roster this offseason.

Other than Dalton Knecht and Bronny James, the two players they drafted last week, the Los Angeles Lakers’ roster still looks similar to the one they had this past season.

Fans are already criticizing general manager Rob Pelinka and accusing him of allegedly being asleep on the job while some other teams across the NBA have improved via free agency and trades in recent days.

However, that doesn’t mean Pelinka hasn’t been trying to make something significant happen behind the scenes. Insider Anthony Irwin wrote that the Lakers are in trade talks with multiple teams about multiple players.

Via Lakers Daily:

“Sources say the Lakers have held trade talks with the Portland Trail Blazers about Jerami Grant, the Brooklyn Nets about Cameron Johnson and Dorian Finney-Smith, the Toronto Raptors about Bruce Brown and the Washington Wizards about Kyle Kuzma — as well as other teams and other trade targets. To this point, though, those are the names most closely linked to the Lakers, according to league and team sources.”

According to Irwin, Grant would cost two first-round draft picks, while Finney-Smith would require L.A. to give up one first-round pick.

Brown, who was a key factor in the Denver Nuggets winning the NBA championship a year ago, is a player the Lakers have had interest in previously. They wanted to sign him last summer, and they had some desire to trade for him a few months ago.

Kuzma is likely a player fans would welcome back in a heartbeat. While he’s a mediocre 3-point shooter and not an easy fit next to LeBron James and Anthony Davis, he averaged 22.2 points and 4.2 assists while shooting 46.3% from the field this past season. All of those numbers were career highs for him.

Lakers have been talking to the Blazers about a Jerami Grant trade

The Lakers are reportedly in talks with the Blazers to pull off what would be a significant trade for forward Jerami Grant.

A couple of hours into NBA free agency on Sunday, the only move the Los Angeles Lakers had made was to re-sign guard Max Christie to a four-year, $32 million contract. Christie is one of their most promising young players, but it is clear they will need more than improvement from him to become championship contenders again.

With Jonas Valančiūnas, Chris Paul and James Harden off the board, the outside free agent options for the Lakers are slim. Therefore, they will, in all likelihood, have to pull off at least one significant trade in order to return to the league’s elite ranks.

According to insider Anthony Irwin, the team is engaged in talks with the Portland Trail Blazers in an attempt to land forward Jerami Grant (h/t The Cold Wire).

Grant would be quite a big get for Los Angeles. He averaged 21.0 points a game while shooting 40.2% from 3-point range during the 2023-24 season. The 6-foot-7, 210-pound frontcourt player has ample athleticism, and his defense isn’t too shabby either.

He is under contract for four more seasons, and he will make about $29.8 million during the 2024-25 campaign.

Lakers could be interested in Jerami Grant

Would Jerami Grant make the Lakers championship contenders again?

With a new head coach finally in place, it will soon be time for the Los Angeles Lakers to attempt to significantly upgrade their roster in order to make a serious run at the NBA championship.

It looks like they would like a secure an upgrade in the backcourt in the form of a dynamic ball-handling, facilitating guard who is a legitimate scoring threat. Dejounte Murray, Donovan Mitchell, Trae Young and Collin Sexton are names that have come up as far as trying to secure such an upgrade.

But Los Angeles could instead opt for a major upgrade at the wing spot. According to Jake Fischer, they could make a run at Jerami Grant.

Via Yahoo Sports:

“Los Angeles has also made that No. 17 selection available via trade, sources said, as the Lakers have evaluated the market for a significant contributor alongside [LeBron] James and [Anthony] Davis,” Fischer wrote. “The Lakers, remember, held serious talks with Atlanta about acquiring Dejounte Murray in the lead-up to February’s trade deadline. Jerami Grant, a client of Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul, is believed to be another potential addition on the Lakers’ wishlist, according to league sources.”

Grant, a 6-foot-7 forward, has spent 10 seasons in the league. Ever since leaving the Denver Nuggets in 2020, he has blossomed into a borderline star.

He has spent the last two seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers, and this season, he averaged 21.0 points a game while shooting 40.2% from 3-point range.

Grant will make $29.8 million next season, so he may be a somewhat less expensive option for Los Angeles than some other targets. He’s under contract for four more seasons thanks to an extension he signed last summer.

NBA draft rewind: Sixers select Jerami Grant in 2nd round of 2014

The Philadelphia 76ers selected Jerami Grant with a second round pick in the 2014 NBA draft.

With the 2024 NBA draft approaching quickly–Round 1 of the draft is set for June 26–now is the time to look back at some of the previous draft picks the Philadelphia 76ers have made in recent years.

The Sixers had a solid 2014 draft already with the selection of Joel Embiid at No. 3 and the acquisition of Dario Saric at No. 12. They then had a few more selections in the second round of the draft and with the 39th overall pick, Philadelphia selected Syracuse star Jerami Grant.

In his rookie season with the Sixers, Grant averaged 6.3 points and 3.0 rebounds while playing in 65 games and averaging 21.2 minutes per night. Early in his third season–two games in–he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a deal that netted them Ersan Ilyasova.

Grant has since played for the Denver Nuggets, the Detroit Pistons, and the Portland Trail Blazers. He blossomed into a scorer in Detroit as he averaged 20.9 points per game with the Pistons and has averaged 20.7 points per game in two seasons with the Blazers.

Mock trade sees the Spurs flip Keldon Johnson for Jerami Grant

This mock trade would see the San Antonio Spurs move Keldon Johnson for Jerami Grant.

If the San Antonio Spurs want to take another step, they could choose to be aggressive on the trade market this summer. Jeje Gomez of Pounding the Rock suggests a mock trade that would send the eighth pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Keldon Johnson, and Devonte’ Graham to the Portland Trail Blazers for Jerami Grant.

“Grant is 30 years old but he does fit what the Spurs need,” Gomez wrote. “He’s a long forward who can hit threes, create in a pinch and bring athleticism on defense. He’d be an upgrade over Johnson in most areas and should bring more consistency to the position. The Blazers, meanwhile would be moving up six spots while getting younger. Devonte’ Graham would be included to make the salaries match and offer Portland the opportunity to cut some salary by waiving him while Johnson would offer Portland scoring and a contract that declines as the years go by. San Antonio would be taking on Grant’s huge contract that runs for three more years after next season, but the deal expires when whoever they pick fourth ends his rookie contract and Grant would be on a huge expiring deal the year in which Wembanyama’s extension would kick in, which would make him a good trade asset.

“Grant seems fine staying in Portland despite being in a rebuilding situation and might not be as disruptive on defense as his athleticism wanes. The Spurs value Johnson and should be hesitant to trade him for a non-star, especially considering his team-friendly contract. But it could be a mutually beneficial deal for two teams in different stages of their rebuild.”

Bringing in Grant would help the Spurs improve, but dealing a top-10 pick and Johnson seems like a fairly hefty price.
