In-state Southeastern Conference East foe Vanderbilt fired head coach Derek Mason Sunday.

Mason served as the Commodores’ head coach since 2014, compiling a 3-3 record against Tennessee. He had a 27-55 overall record at Vanderbilt, while appearing in two bowl games.

Following Mason’s departure, Vols Wire takes a look at in-state head coaching candidates, Trent Dilfer, Jeff Fisher and Rex Ryan, for Vanderbilt’s vacant position.

Phil Jones, former Vols’ defensive lineman (1973-74) and Nashville resident, discussed who would be a leading candidate between Dilfer, Fisher and Ryan at Vanderbilt.

Jones views Dilfer as the leading candidate of the three.

Dilfer previously joined the show “Tennessee Two-A-Days” to discuss his coaching career.

Former Rams coach Jeff Fisher is starting his own podcast

Jeff Fisher teased his own podcast on Twitter Tuesday.

Much was made (and still is) about Jeff Fisher’s rocky tenure with the Rams from 2012-2016. He never led the team to eight or more wins, finishing between 6-10 and 7-8-1 four times. He became the butt of 7-9 jokes across the internet, especially after his “7-9 bullshit” rant on “Hard Knocks.”

Fisher hasn’t coached in the NFL since, but he’s still staying relevant in the sports space by remaining active on Twitter. Fisher is a worthwhile follow on the social media site, and his new podcast will certainly be worth listening to.

On Tuesday, he teased his upcoming podcast called “In the Box with Jeff Fisher.” He didn’t share any details beyond the tweet, but did say it’s coming soon.

Fisher has appeared on radio shows and podcasts in the past and shared some insightful information. Hopefully with a podcast of his own, he’ll shed light on his time with the Rams, as well as his coaching career as a whole.

Fisher went 31-45-1 overall with the Rams and never reached the postseason. He was fired 13 games into the 2016 season, opening the door for John Fassel to take over as the interim head coach. Sean McVay was hired the following year in 2017.

Podcast: Texas Longhorns under tremendous pressure in 2020

Locked on Longhorns Podcast returns discussing the pressure that Tom Herman and Texas will face in 2020. Plus an Ohio State commit weighs in

The Texas Longhorns are under immense pressure to win in 2020. Patrick and Cami discuss the pressure that Tom Herman and the staff is feeling for the upcoming season. Ohio State commit Tunmise Adeleye weighed in on why he didn’t choose Texas and his reasoning isn’t a new development for the Longhorns. However, it is something that needs to be addressed in order for the team to compete with top tier prospects across the country.

The 2020 season is a huge one for the staff but are their potential pitfalls? The Kansas State, Iowa State and Oklahoma State are three that could give the Longhorns fits in the upcoming season. Oklahoma and LSU are obviously the biggest tests for Texas but any of the three aforementioned teams could cause the Longhorns to stumble if they aren’t focused.

The duo provide an updated on the four targets as far as their crystal predictions on 247Sports. Plus which of the 35 FBS teams are surprising that they haven’t ever beaten Texas.

Locked on Longhorns Podcast: Another ‘What If’ Monday

The latest “What If” episode of the Longhorns podcast discussing Nick Saban, Shane Buechele and Jamaal Charles.

The Monday edition of the Locked on Longhorns Podcast opens up with the idea of sports coming back soon. NASCAR and golf returned over the weekend, how far off could other sports be? The first what if scenario discussion with the idea of Nick Saban actually taking the job at the University of Texas following the 2012 season. What would the Texas Longhorns look like with Saban at the helm?

What if the Longhorns would have gone with Shane Buechele over Sam Ehlinger? Following the game against Notre Dame in 2016, the Longhorns looked to have found their quarterback of the next several seasons. However, Tom Herman went with Sam Ehlinger during the 2017 campaign and that eventually led Shane to transferring to Southern Methodist.

The 2008 season has been one topic of discussion as of late but what if Jamaal Charles would have remained at Texas for his senior year? How differently could that have impacted the season and the 2008 heartbreaker against Texas Tech.

Locked on Longhorns Podcast: Playing the ‘What if’ game

Latest Locked on Longhorns Podcast discussing a few “What if’s” such as the Blake Gideon drop and Colt McCoy’s injury in the BCS title game.

The show kicks off talking about three big what if scenarios. Patrick and Cami take a trip down memory lane and discuss what could have happened if these three scenarios played out a different way.

  1. What if Blake Gideon caught the tipped pass from Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell on Halloween Night in 2008? Would Texas have played for the National Championship? Would the Longhorns had fared any better against Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators than their bitter rivals did?
  2. What if Colt McCoy didn’t get hurt on the opening drive against Alabama in the 2009 BCS National Championship game. McCoy took what looked to be a normal hit, what if that hit never happened? Or what if that hit didn’t knock him out of the biggest game of his collegiate career? Colt himself stated that night changed his life forever but how much could it have changed the fortunes of the Texas Longhorns football team?
  3. What if Vince Young didn’t sign his NLI to play football at the University of Texas? What would that ripple effect had been like? What if instead he chose Florida State?
  4. As an added bonus, Cami and Patrick ask the question of what if Vince Young had decided to play his senior year at Texas? That could have changed not only the National Championship picture that year but maybe the Colt McCoy situation. Also, what if Vince Young didn’t play for Jeff Fisher and the Titans?

Former Titans head coach Jeff Fisher fires back at 7-9, 8-8 trolls

Jeff Fisher’s GIF game is strong.

Former Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher recently welcomed a granddaughter into the world, announcing her birth via a post on social media.

Unfortunately, there were some trolls out there ready with their 7-9, 8-8 jokes to try and spoil the feel-good moment.

Of course, the joke originates from Fisher saying “I’m not (expletive) going 7-9 or 8-8 or 9-7” in an episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” when he was the head coach of the Rams.

But Fisher was having none of it.

Who knew Fisher had such a strong GIF game?

Putting the trolls aside, congratulations to coach Fisher.

Fisher is having a pretty awesome year so far. On top of welcoming in a new grandchild, Fisher was also notified that he’d be inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.

Fisher spent 17 seasons as the head coach of the Houston Oilers/Titans, taking the franchise to a pair of AFC Championship Game appearances and one Super Bowl berth. He later moved on to coach the Rams from 2012 to 2016.

George Kittle, Jeff Fisher to be guests on ‘Bussin’ With The Boys’ podcast

Former Titans head coach Jeff Fisher and 49ers tight end George Kittle will be guests on “Bussin’ with the Boys.”

Tennessee Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan and Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Will Compton have never failed to keep things interesting since they launched their “Bussin’ With The Boys” podcast last year.

There’s been no shortage of high-profile guests, and that list will now include former Titans head coach Jeff Fisher and San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle.

Compton and Lewan are looking forward to the lineup, which also includes Alabama singer/songwriter Riley Green and singer Travis Denning.

These are sure to be interesting episodes, especially with Fisher, who classifies himself as a “coach, outdoorsman, philanthropist and entrepreneur” making an appearance.

Kittle, “The People’s Tight End” should also have a good amount of colorful topics to touch on.

Based on this, it’s pretty clear he’s “For the Boys.” We just want to know if he shotgunned it or not.

The podcast has produced 35 episodes since its creation, recently partnering with Barstool Sports, and can be found here.

Former Titans HC Jeff Fisher to be inducted into Tennessee Sports HOF

Former Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher will be inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.

Former Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher has been notified that he will be inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2020.

Fisher received the news while appearing as a guest on The Midday 180 show on Friday.

Other 2020 inductees already announced include Tony Delk, Bettye Giles, Dick Horton and Carl Torbush. More are expected to be added at a later date, per Jim Wyatt of Titans Online.

Fisher was named the interim head coach of the Houston Oilers in 1994 and remained in that position through the franchise’s move to Tennessee, all the way through the 2010 season.

As the head coach, Fisher compiled a 142-120 overall record. He made six trips to the playoffs during his tenure, including an appearance in Super Bowl XXXIV. In total, Fisher finished with a 5-6 record in the postseason.

After his days as the Titans’ head coach, Fisher moved on to coach the Rams, where he spent five seasons, from 2012 through 2016.
