Notre Dame linebacker Jack Kiser named Campbell Trophy finalist

Congrats, Jack!

Notre Dame is proud of its academic reputation as well as its athletic excellence. It does its best to make sure those two things go together rather than be independent of each other. While some Irish fans think those academic standards make it difficult to attract top football talent, the university simply will not compromise itself in this way.

Case in point, Irish linebacker [autotag]Jack Kiser[/autotag] has been named one of 16 finalists for the William V. Campbell Trophy, the college football award given to the player who best combines their on-field performance with their academic performance and community service.

Just for being named a finalist, Kiser will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship to continue his education. If he wins the award, and he’ll find out Dec. 10 at the prestigious Bellagio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, that scholarship will be bumped up to $25,000.

Knowing of the friendship between Kiser and former teammate [autotag]JD Bertrand[/autotag], a 2023 award finalist, the Irish chose to have Bertrand give Kiser the news:

Congratulations to Kiser on this wonderful honor.

Former Notre Dame captain to make first NFL start for Atlanta Falcons

Good luck, JD!

If your football fandom extends beyond Notre Dame, chances are you’ll be tuning into this week’s Thursday Night Football game. On the surface, it’s a typical divisional rivalry contest between the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. There’s extra meaning here though for Irish fans.

Two-time Irish captain [autotag]JD Bertrand[/autotag] will make his first NFL start at right inside linebacker for the Falcons. He’ll take the place of Troy Andersen, who is out after suffering a knee injury. Andersen had been starting for Nate Landman, who currently is on injured reserve with leg injuries.

Bertrand was a fifth-round selection for the Falcons in the 2024 NFL draft and the 143rd pick overall. In four games this season, he has registered two tackles.

When asked to comment, Bertand said the following:

“Any opportunity, I’m going to continue to be ready, and I think that’s been my job up to this point as a backup. If the opportunity appears Thursday, then I’ll be sure I’m ready.”

Best of luck to Bertrand as he takes the next step in his young NFL career.

NFL draft: Falcons pick Notre Dame linebacker, bring him home

JD Bertrand is headed home!

Who says you can’t go home again?

Notre Dame linebacker JD Bertrand is doing exactly that as he was drafted Saturday by the Atlanta Falcons in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft.

Bertrand is originally from Roswell, Georgia, which is just under an hour from the Mercedes-Benz Dome where the Falcons call home.  That’s where he was on Saturday when he got the call that he was being taken in the NFL draft.

“I was ecstatic,” Bertrand said in a conference call with Atlanta reporters from suburban Roswell, Ga. “Right when I looked down, I saw the Flowery Branch number, and I said, ‘Let’s go.’
– JD Bertrand

Bertrand being drafted two rounds after Marist Liufau means that it was the first time since 2002 that Notre Dame saw a pair of linebackers drafted (Rocky Boiman, Tyreo Harrison).

Bertrand started 12 games and recorded 76 tackles for Notre Dame in 2023.

The Falcons added another defender in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft by taking Notre Dame linebacker JD Bertrand. The team drafted four straight defensive players after selecting quarterback Michael Penix in Round 1.

Bertrand started seeing meaningful reps in 2021 and has since totaled 111 tackles and 22.5 tackles for loss. He also added five sacks and nine pass breakups. Watch Bertrand’s best college highlights, as shared by the team’s Twitter account below:

The Atlanta Falcons selected Notre Dame linebacker JD Bertrand in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL draft on Saturday afternoon. Bertrand is an off-ball linebacker that should add some depth behind Kaden Ellis, Nate Landman and Troy Andersen this season.

After surprising their fans by taking quarterback Michael Penix Jr. in the first round, the Falcons have spent four straight picks on the defensive side of the ball. Linebacker wasn’t a huge need but it never hurts to add depth at such a violent position. Pro Football Focus had Bertrand ranked as the 175th prospect going into the draft.

“Bertrand is an experienced, smart linebacker prospect and an excellent pre-snap anticipator and communicator,” Pro Football Focus wrote on its 2024 big board. “He is rarely fooled by the window dressing of play action and pre-snap motion, often cutting off those plays. At 6-foot-1 and 235 pounds, he is on the smaller side. His lack of length is an issue when wrapping up and when getting off blocks. However, he is fundamentally sound in run defense.”

Quick look at 2024 NFL draft landscape at linebacker for Packers

The Packers need linebackers. The best avenue for adding at this point? The 2024 draft.

Brian Gutekunst went to the market to sign a veteran linebacker to pair with Quay Walker and Isaiah McDuffie. Unfortunately, Green Bay’s general manager discovered that the linebacker aisle was picked over, like the toy aisle the day before Christmas.

With the linebacker market barren, the Packers will likely need to trade for a veteran or use the draft to bolster the linebacker room at 1265 Lombardi Avenue. Let’s take a look at some linebackers that the Packers could target in the 2024 NFL draft.

Potential Target at 25

Edgerrin Cooper, Texas A&M

Cooper is an explosive mover and a true difference-maker. He can impact the game as a run defender, as a blitzer, or in coverage. If Cooper were to land in Green Bay he’d be the best linebacker on the roster, and no that’s not a shot at Walker. It’s a credit to Cooper.

Cooper may be viewed as a bit of a reach in the first round, but the same thing can be said about Eric Stokes, Quay Walker, etc. Cooper would be a home run pick at 41, but Gutekunst may see the value in taking the impactful linebacker with the 25th overall pick.

Day 2 Targets

Cedric Gray, UNC

Gray was all over the field this past season for the Tar Heels. He recorded 121 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and five sacks. The UNC linebacker works his way through the trash against the run and has the movement skills to hold up in coverage.

Junior Colson, Michigan

Mr. Always in the Right Place at the Right Time, Colson would be a steady presence in the middle of Green Bay’s defense. Colson is comfortable dropping in space and does a good job of reading the quarterback’s eyes. He has the range as a run defender to shut-down outside runs and is a reliable tackler. He is quick to diagnose and beats blockers to the spot.

Payton Wilson, NC State

Every team could use a Payton Wilson. If he had a clean bill of health (two leg injuries), he’d be in the Potential Target at 25 tier with Cooper. The NC State product is the complete package at linebacker. He’s a physical, downhill defender against the run and he has the movement skills to hold up in coverage.

Day 3 Targets

Edefuan Ulofoshio, Washington

From walk-on to captain, Ulofoshio had quite the journey during his time at Washington. The Alaska native is all heart and his motor is always running. He trusts his eyes and is quick to react to meet ball carriers in the hole. The Husky linebacker shows good instincts in coverage.

Jordan Magee, Temple

Magee isn’t a hulking linebacker, but he has the functional strength to destroy blocks and disrupt the action. He’s a smart player that is quick to read and react. The Temple linebacker gets good depth on his drops and looks comfortable moving laterally. Magee logged 307 snaps on special teams during his collegiate career and could carve out a role in that regard immediately as a rookie.

Marist Liufau, Notre Dame

Liufau plays like his hair is on fire and is relentless in his pursuit of the ball carrier. He has the sideline-to-sideline quickness and is comfortable dropping into space.

Trevin Wallace, Kentucky

Wallace is an outstanding athlete with the sideline-to-sideline range to chase down ball carriers. A former track athlete, Wallace is the type of prospect that Gutekunst has a history of targeting. If his instincts ever catch up to his athletic traits, Wallace could develop into quite the difference-maker at the next level.

Curtis Jacobs, Penn State

A team will roll the dice on the Penn State linebacker’s athletic traits. With his quickness and his experience on special teams, it’s a safe bet that he could develop into a core player on special teams. Jacobs is a twitched-up athlete with the movement skills to hold up on coverage.

JD Bertrand, Notre Dame

Bertrand is a cerebral player who trusts his eyes and is quick to read the action. He’s a downhill player, who does a good job of sifting through the trash to locate the ball carrier. With his instincts, relentless motor and special teams experience, Bertrand would be a solid addition to Green Bay’s linebacker room.

10 biggest winners from the week of Senior Bowl practices

10 biggest winners from the week of Senior Bowl practices (via Draft Wire):

Another week of Senior Bowl practices ended last week. The three days of work from the American and National rosters helped elevate some players and spotlight who might not be as ready as hoped or hyped for the 2024 NFL draft.

The focus here is on some of the top performers and also a few lesser-known prospects who helped themselves during the sessions in Mobile.

According to our friend Jeff Risdon at Draft Wire, here are 10 biggest winners during the 2024 Senior Bowl:

Notre Dame Football: Senior Bowl Recap for Irish

How Notre Dame players performed in this weekend’s Senior Bowl

The annual Senior Bowl was held this weekend in Mobile, Alabama and Notre Dame had a fairly large presence as five former Golden Domers participated.

JD Bertrand, Cam Hart, Sam Hartman, Javontate Jean-Baptiste, and Marist Liufau all earned invitations to the Senior Bowl this year.  The game is pretty much just the tip of the iceberg for the week that is the Senior Bowl, as much more is generally learned in the practices that lead up to the game.

So how did the former Notre Dame players who participated in the Senior Bowl perform?

Below is a recap of all five participants.

List of linebackers and edges at 2024 Senior Bowl

List of linebackers and edges at 2024 Senior Bowl

With the NFL as pass-happy as it is, pass-rushers are extremely valuable. Having a good week in Mobile can also help such players. Just ask the Jets. They have selected an edge that was at the Senior Bowl in the first round in each of the last two drafts — Jermaine Johnson, 2022; Will McDonald, 2023.

Could the Jets add another this year? Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will get a close eye on some of these players as the American team head coach. Not just Ulbrich, but linebackers coach Nathaniel Willingham as well, as he will be on the coaching staff. Joining Willingham is Imarjaye Albury of the Vikings, Rob Leonard of the Raiders and Cato June of the Colts. Notre Dame’s JD Bertrand named First-Team Academic All-American

The captain is quite smart.

[autotag]JD Bertrand[/autotag] was a captain at Notre Dame the past two years. Somehow, that didn’t take the linebacker away from his studies enough for his grades to suffer. In fact, he absolutely thrived in the classroom, and now, he’s been recognized for that.

Bertrand has been named a First-Team Academic All-American by the College Sports Communicators. He’s the 37th Irish player to be so honored and the first since [autotag]Drue Tranquill[/autotag] in 2016 and 2017. Other Irish honorees over the years include [autotag]Mike Golic Jr.[/autotag], [autotag]Manti Te’o[/autotag], [autotag]John Carlson[/autotag] and [autotag]Joe Theismann[/autotag].

Bertrand was recognized by virtue of earning a 3.62/3.74 GPA. He also was named to the CSC Academic All-District Team alongside [autotag]Jack Kiser[/autotag] and [autotag]Davis Sherwood[/autotag]. There are some smart players on the Irish indeed.

Bertand’s current focus is preparing for the NFL draft. Whoever picks him, if anybody, will be getting someone with intelligence and leadership qualities. Hopefully, those will be on full display at the next level.
