Is Jaylon Braxton the next Arkansas All-SEC defensive back?

Arkansas has been blessed with quality cornerbacks in the last decade. Jaylon Braxton may end up being the best of them.

The list of great defensive backs in the history of Arkansas football is extensive. It’s also about to get a little bit longer.

Arkansas cornerback Jaylon Braxton enters his sophomore year with the Razorbacks as the unquestioned best player in the defensive backfield. And that’s no slight to the rest of the Arkansas secondary. Braxton is just that good.

The Frisco, Texas, native had every opportunity to get a job early in the year as the Razorbacks’ 2022 pass defense was so bad, Arkansas made the spots an open competition. He took advantage, ultimately finishing with 21 tackles, eight pass break-ups and an interception. Such numbers ensured he enters 2024 as a starter.

“He’s a really good player. We knew he was,” Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said. “It’s just going to be real exciting to see him grow, but what he does, he makes plays just like the Florida game. He makes plays. He’s a ballhawk.”

Braxton’s development turned Arkansas from a pass defense ranked dead last in FBS in 2022 to 32nd in 2023. The unit lost only two players – Dwight McGlothern and Al Walcott – from last year’s bunch, too. Braxton believes they can take another step forward.

“Now the game knowledge has slowed down tremendously for me and I’m just out there playing comfortable and having fun,” Braxton said “I’ve just got a lot more confidence going into Year 2 than I had my freshman year.”

Razorbacks’ new faces at cornerback impressive so far

New Arkansas secondary coach Deron Wilson has been impressed with the new cornerbacks in early fall camp.

Through the first four days of fall camp, Arkansas secondary coach Daron Wilson has been impressed with some of the new faces at cornerback – transfers and freshmen – that he has briefly been able see in action.

Most notably was Georgia transfer Jaheim Singletary, a highly touted redshirt-freshman, who many expect to eventually be a mainstay for the Razorback defense. At 6-foot-2, 187 pounds, Singletary is one of the tallest Hogs at the position, with impressive speed and quickness.

“He has been really impressive so far,” Wilson said. “He’s getting the defense down, flying around, communicating, and fitting in with the rest of the guys.”

A 4-star recruit out of Jacksonville (FL) Riverside High School a year ago, Singletary was rated as the No. 8 cornerback prospect nationally, the No. 8 prospect in Florida and the No. 66 prospect nationally, according to 247 Sports.

“He’s been impressive, but to get on the field, we tell him to keep doing what he’s doing, and keep getting better,” Wilson added. “Because if you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse. And over these first four days he has been getting better every day.”

Singletary played in three games for Georgia last season, but retained his freshman status, with four years of eligibility remaining.

Wilson also praised the early performances of TCU transfer senior Kee’yon Stewart and true freshman TJ Metcalf, a 4-star recruit out of Birmingham (AL) Pinson Valley High School.

“They are still getting acclimated, but have been impressive, so far,” Wilson said. “If you walked on the field, you wouldn’t even know TJ is a freshman.

“Jaylon Braxton has been having a really good camp, also, talking from a new guys or freshman perspective,” Wilson said.

The 4-star recruit out of Frisco (TX) Lone Star High School, who flipped his commitment from Michigan State over the summer, was ranked the No. 10 cornerback in the country and the No. 109 ranked prospect overall. He’s the 24th highest rated Arkansas prospect since online rankings began.

The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Braxton has already been compared to former Arkansas and NFL standout Ahmad “Batman” Carroll, who still resonates with Razorback fans for his dynamic cover skills and ferocious hitting.

The season will kick off on Sept. 2, as the Hogs host Western Carolina in Little Rock.

Arkansas target, three-star EDGE set to commit Tuesday

Three-star EDGE Brad Spence is set to choose between Arkansas, Cal, and Texas on Tuesday afternoon.

There is an old saying in sports when a team finds consistent success, “keep your foot on the gas.”

The saying is true for Arkansas Football, especially when it comes to the recruiting trail. The Razorbacks have received commitments from 21 prospects from the 2023 cycle, and are in the running to add another on Tuesday.

[autotag]Brad Spence[/autotag], a three-star EDGE rusher from Klein Forest High School in Houston, Texas, will announce his commitment on Tuesday, and has included Arkansas in his top 3 choices.

Arkansas offered Spence on February 17, becoming the 15th program to do so. Since receiving an offer from Arkansas, Spence has taken in 17 more. But, Arkansas has stood out to Spence. He took his official visit to Arkansas during the weekend of June 10, and put Arkansas in his top 3 college choices on July 1.

Currently, Arkansas has two commits for the 2023 class at EDGE, [autotag]Quincy Rhodes[/autotag] and [autotag]Carson Dean[/autotag], who both are rated as three-stars by 247sports. Arkansas has also four players from the state of Texas who have committed for the 2023 cycle. Most recently, the Razorbacks earned the commitment of [autotag]Jaylon Braxton[/autotag], a four-star CB from Frisco, last Saturday.

Spence will choose between Arkansas, Cal, and Texas on Tuesday. According to 247sports, he will announce his decision at noon CDT.

Former MSU commit, 4-star CB Jaylon Braxton announces commitment to Arkansas

Former Michigan State commit Jaylon Braxton is officially heading to Arkansas

Former Michigan State commit Jaylon Braxton is officially heading to Arkansas.

Braxton announced his commitment to the Razorbacks on Saturday, which was just over three weeks since he committed to Michigan State. Braxton — a four-star cornerback in the 2023 class — committed to the Spartans on June 14 after he took an official visit to Michigan State. The following weekend he took an official visit to Arkansas and it was during that visit that it appears he flipped to the Razorbacks. Numerous recruiting insiders predicted he’d decommit from Michigan State and commit to Arkansas following that visit, and that is surely what happened.

Braxton is ranked as the No. 27 cornerback and No. 44 player from Texas in 247Sports’ composite rankings for the 2023 class. He hails from Frisco, Texas, and plays for Lone Star High.

Four-star CB from Texas flips from Michigan State to Arkansas

Arkansas lands their 21st commitment for the class of 2023, and their fourth from the state of Texas, as Jaylon Braxton pledges to the Razorbacks.

Just when you think Arkansas Football can not simply have a better 2023 recruiting cycle, they go on to prove that they can.

The nation’s No. 6 recruiting class for the 2023 cycle got better on Saturday, as they landed a four-star cornerback from Texas, [autotag]Jaylon Braxton[/autotag].

Braxton received an offer from Arkansas in March which, at the time, was his third offer from an SEC program behind Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. Since being offered by Arkansas, Braxton received seven offers, including one from Michigan State. Braxton then took his official visit to Michigan State on June 3, and committed to the Spartans two weeks later on June 14.

However, despite being committed to Michigan State, Braxton still took his official visit to Arkansas just three days later. That is when Arkansas began catching heat. Following the official visit, 247sports’ Corey Robinson gave Arkansas a Crystal Ball predication to land Braxton.

After receiving the Crystal Ball, Braxton took one more official visit to Miami, then proceeded to de-commit from Michigan State on July 1. The Razorbacks then landed his commitment on July 9.

Jaylon Braxton is the No. 44 prospect from the state of Texas for the 2023 cycle, and the No. 27 cornerback in the nation according to 247sports composite rankings. Braxton, who hails from Frisco, Texas, is the fourth commit that Arkansas has received from the state of Texas. He joins DL Kaleb James (Mansfield), EDGE Carson Dean (Carrollton), and S Christian Ford (McKinney).

Braxton’s commitment gives Arkansas 21 for the class of 2023, seven of those are rated as four-stars.

Tigers offer four-star cornerback from Texas

The Tigers continue to target talented players from the Lone Star State.

[autotag]Jaylon Braxton[/autotag] is a 6-foot, 170-pound cornerback from Frisco, Texas, where he plays for Lone Star High School. Braxton also competes in track and field. He was named Texas District 5-5A D-I Two-Way Player of the Year as a junior and played at Frisco Independence as a sophomore.

Film Analysis: Braxton is a headhunter. If you are a wide receiver that is running a bubble screen to his side of the field, be prepared to get your clock cleaned. He does a great job in coverage of sitting on a route and reading the eyes of the quarterback. That allows him to jump the route and make some interceptions.
