Who are the best players and position groups Oklahoma will face in 2023?

Who are some of the players that could give the Sooners the most problems in 2023?

The 2023 Oklahoma Sooners schedule leaves much to be desired. After canceling the game against Georgia Bulldogs, there aren’t many games that move the needle.

Georgia would likely have the most talented players at each position. Losing the back-to-back national champion certainly kills Oklahoma’s strength of schedule.

But the Sooners still face teams with talent, such as the Texas Longhorns and the TCU Horned Frogs. There’s some talent joining the Big 12 this year as well.

So, who are some of the players Oklahoma fans should be looking out for, and what position groups could give the Sooners the most problems heading into the season?

Let’s take a look at the best player or position group the Sooners will face in 2023.

Looking at Texas LB Jaylan Ford’s best plays 41 days from kickoff

We’re 41 days from the 2023 Texas football season. Here are some of No. 41’s best highlights.

Jaylan Ford is one of the nation’s best linebackers. The talented Texas tackler is set to duplicate a strong 2022 campaign and win Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

The unheralded player from Frisco (Lone Star) was the second-to-last ranked player in his 2020 recruiting class. In the last 247Sports update, Ford was the No. 68 linebacker and No. 137 player in Texas. That player evaluation was a whiff.

Ford has risen from a near unknown three-star recruit to one of the best linebackers in the country. His historic 2022 campaign saw him toward the Big 12 leaderboard in several statistical categories. Those categories include the second-highest interception total in the conference.

With the season 41 days from its start, here are some of the best plays made by No. 41.

Three Longhorns projected as Big 12 Player of the Year candidates

Texas will have premier talent all over the field in 2023.

Texas is fresh off of a season that saw them go 8-5, and while that isn’t the equivalent of them being the national power they should be, it was a step in the right direction.

The biggest positive to take away from the 2022 season was the fact that the Longhorns improved when their roster relied on quite a few younger guys. Now, heading into the 2023 season Texas’ roster ranks No. 19 in the country in returning production according to ESPN, with their offense at No. 3. Theoretically this means that the offense will be able to build off the experience they got last year and take a major leap in 2023 as Texas wins to win their first and likely final Big 12 Championship since 2009.

With all of the key players that Texas has returning on offense, 247Sports views two of them as being legitimate candidates for Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. Those two players are none other than quarterback Quinn Ewers who could be on a revenge tour after he fizzled last season following a strong early showing, and wide receiver Xavier Worthy who also had his fair share of letdowns.  247Sports‘ Cody Nagel expressed Ewers perhaps needed a year of football and adapting to Texas in order to succeed like many thought he would.

Speaking of Quinn Ewers, it is easy to criticize his underwhelming redshirt freshman season at Texas considering his elite five-star status coming out of high school. However, the former No. 1 overall prospect did reclassify to the 2021 cycle and transferred to the Longhorns after spending his first year of college at Ohio State. Perhaps now that Ewers is firmly settled in Austin he can rise to the level of expectation. He did flash at times throughout the 2022 season, finishing with 2,177 yards and 15 touchdowns against six interceptions in 10 games.

It’s hard to blame a receiver for struggling if the quarterback is also not playing his best, and while that was also the case there were some instances of Worthy leaving more to be desired. If Ewers plays better, it likely means that Worthy will also see an uptick in production according to Nagel.

A down year in 2022 could mean Xavier Worthy is primed for a monster bounce-back season at Texas in 2023. One of the top receivers in the Big 12 over the last two years, Worthy totaled 1,741 yards and 21 touchdowns on 122 receptions during his freshman and sophomore campaigns. The pieces are coming together in the Longhorns’ offensive scheme under head coach Steve Sarkisian. And another year of chemistry established with quarterback Quinn Ewers makes Worthy not only a candidate for Offensive Player of the Year in the conference, but a likely contender for the Biletnikoff Award.

In reality this duo should both be poised for bigger years, as Texas will have more weapons at Ewers’ disposal which will help Worthy get open more. The receiver room at Texas is viewed as one of the best in the country.

On the defensive side of the ball, Texas ranks as the No. 68 team in returning production. They specifically return a linebacker in Jaylan Ford who could end up being one of the best in the country. He was the lone Longhorn to be recognized as having a chance to win Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors, and for Texas it might actually be shocking if he doesn’t. The hard hitting linebacker is always in the right place and will have a chance to lead this Texas defense to even more success.

A breakout season in 2022 followed by a decision to return to Texas in January has linebacker Jaylan Ford set up to be a defensive leader in the Big 12. He finished second in the conference with 119 total tackles last year and tied for third in interceptions with four. Ford also tied for 12th in tackles for loss with 10. His production as a junior was a big reason for the Longhorns’ defense showing significant improvements in Year 2 under coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski.

If these three players have great years for Texas, there’s not a doubt in my mind that the Longhorns won’t be contending for a Big 12 Championship.

Looking at Texas assistants’ best developed players in Austin

Kyle Flood gave us Kelvin Banks, Jeff Banks gave us Ja’Tavion Sanders.

Texas football coaches are developing players for the first time in awhile. While in past regimes talented players slipped through the cracks undeveloped, this staff is maximizing the talent on campus.

We’ve detailed the progress made by the program in this respect, but haven’t necessarily broken down in depth what each coach has accomplished. When you look at each position group, there are plenty of positive takeaways.

Offensive line coach Kyle Flood and tight ends/special teams coach Jeff Banks were brought in from Alabama to help transform the Texas roster. They have already done that and more producing NFL draft first round caliber players early on in their tenure.

Among coaches that have been on campus since head coach Steve Sarkisian’s first season, here’s a look at each coach’s best example of development.

Five Longhorns who can go in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft

Here is a look at five Longhorns who could play their way into a first-round selection in 2024.

The 2023 NFL Draft wrapped up on Saturday after seven rounds and 259 selections.

Texas football is well-represented in this year’s draft class as five Longhorns heard their names called by NFL teams. A great bounce back for a Texas program that did not have a single player picked in 2022.

Running back Bijan Robinson (Atlanta), linebacker DeMarvion Overshown (Dallas), running back Roschon Johnson (Chicago), defensive tackle Keondre Coburn (Kansas City) and defensive lineman Moro Ojomo (Philadelphia).

Robinson snapped an eight-year first-round drought for the Horns. He became the first Longhorn taken on day one of the draft since Malcom Brown back in 2015.

Steve Sarkisian wants to see the trend of Texas Longhorns in the NFL continue going forward.

While the 2024 NFL Draft is a long way away, Texas has the potential to send a few more players to the league next season. Here is a look at five Longhorns who could play their way into a first-round selection in 2024.

Texas Football: Ranking the top 10 players after spring sessions

We discuss who are the team’s ten best players heading into 2023.

The Longhorns are loaded as they emerge from spring football. We’ve discussed the depth of the quarterback room, but it truly extends across the entire roster.

The greatest strength is without a doubt the receiver room which features matchup nightmares across the board. It’s the arsenal of pass catchers we thought the team had last season before jump ball target Isaiah Neyor suffered injury and elite talents Jahleel Billingsley and Agiye Hall were unable to embrace team culture.

This group of wide receivers in deeper and bought in for the 2023 season. Xavier Worthy, Jordan Whittington and Ja’Tavion Sanders stand as certain, proven commodities after strong 2022 campaigns. The Longhorns add transfer wide receiver AD Mitchell and freshman receivers Johntay Cook and DeAndre Moore to the fold among other talented players.

The aforementioned Neyor and Arkansas transfer safety Jalen Catalon have the ability to raise the team’s ceiling to the sky. Given the immense amount of talent on the team, let’s rank the surest contributors to the 2023 squad.
