The Panthers announce a handful of moves on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers are really trying to make things work on defense.

Tuesday afternoon played host to a flurry of moves for the team, as they announced three additions and five departures. Among the five players on the outs is outside linebacker Shaq Lawson, who was signed to the practice squad a few weeks ago.

Lawson, a Central, S.C. native, was selected with the 19th overall pick of the 2016 draft by the Buffalo Bills. The Clemson University product was elevated to the main roster for this past Sunday’s 40-7 loss to the Washington Commanders, where he recorded 14 defensive snaps.

Carolina also released fellow pass rusher Marquis Haynes Sr., who has now spent each of his seven NFL campaigns with the Panthers. Haynes Sr. saw action in Week 6 and Week 7, totaling one pressure over 41 snaps.

In addition, the Panthers waived inside linebacker Chandler Wooten and defensive lineman T.J. Smith from the 53-man roster while releasing defensive lineman Jayden Peevy from the practice squad.

Those moves helped make room for the signings of defensive lineman Jonathan Harris and outside linebacker Cam Gill to the active roster and rookie center Andrew Raym to the practice squad.

The Panthers brought back a trio of familiar faces to their practice squad.

The Carolina Panthers brought back a trio of familiar faces on Thursday.

As announced this morning, the team has signed three players to their practice squad—running back Mike Boone, defensive lineman Jayden Peevy and safety Russ Yeast. All three were taken off the active roster as part of a busy Tuesday afternoon, when the Panthers signed offensive lineman Cade Mays and Thomas Incoom to the group.

Boone was Carolina’s second-leading rusher of the preseason, where he amassed 76 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. He has appeared in two games during the regular season, with all four of his attempts and each of his seven rushing yards having come in the Week 1 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Peevy has also seen some action over the past five weeks. The 6-foot-5, 308-pounder has played in four games—amassing six combined tackles, 1.5 sack, a forced fumble and a pass defensed.

To help make room for the returns, the Panthers released tight end Stephen Sullivan from the practice squad.

The Panthers made a handful of moves on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers are trying to roll with the punches.

With starting center Austin Corbett now done for the rest of the season due to a biceps tear, the team announced that they have signed offensive lineman Cade Mays to their active roster. Mays, a former Panther, was previously a member of the New York Giants’ practice squad.

Carolina selected Mays in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft. The versatile 6-foot-6, 325-pound hog molly, who played every position on the offensive line during his collegiate career at the University of Tennessee, has amassed 362 snaps at left guard and 104 at right guard as a pro.

Mays should provide some depth after the loss of Corbett, who head coach Dave Canales spoke about on Monday.

“Again, just another blow,” Canales told reporters yesterday afternoon. “With a guy that just stands for everything that I believe in—the work ethic, the practice habits, the professionalism, his positive outlook in terms of what can be on the next drive, just continuing to work and control the things that he can control. So my heart is with Austin.”

The Panthers also signed outside linebacker Thomas Incoom to the active roster. Incoom, who was elevated from the practice squad the past two weeks, has tallied 22 total snaps thus far.

In addition, the team has released running back Mike Boone and practice-squad safety Alex Cook and waived defensive tackle Jayden Peevy and safety Russ Yeast.

Panthers Week 5 inactives: Josey Jewell, 5 others out vs. Bears

As expected, the Panthers will be without starting ILB Josey Jewell against the Bears this afternoon.

The Carolina Panthers deemed six players as inactive for this afternoon’s matchup against the Chicago Bears, including starting inside linebacker Josey Jewell.

Jewell, who was already ruled out of the contest on Friday’s injury report, is currently dealing with hamstring and groin issues. Through four games, the 29-year-old veteran has amassed 30 combined (second-most on the team) with three passes defensed and a fumble recovery.

Carolina’s defense is also without fellow starting inside ‘backer Shaq Thompson, who was officially placed on injured reserve yesterday. The longtime Panther will miss the remainder of the 2024 campaign after tearing his Achilles tendon in the Week 4 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Rookie Trevin Wallace and veteran Claudin Cherelus are expected to start in place of Jewell and Thompson.

Head coach Dave Canales talked about the two earlier this week.

“Yeah, Claudin Cherelus is gonna have a great opportunity to play some football for us,” Canales said to reporters on Monday. “A guy that really took strides in camp, and a guy that we’re definitely looking forward to seeing out there to play football. For he and Trevin [Wallace] to start communicating and be able to work with the whole group.”

For the first time since 2022, Carolina had a 300-yard passer (Dalton), a 100-yard rusher (Hubbard) and a 100-yard receiver (Johnson) in a single game. Hubbard’s 90.6 overall offensive grade is the highest for any Panther in 2024.

Ekwonu turned in his best outing of the campaign, earning season-highs in pass-blocking (72.6) and run-blocking (83.1) marks.

Panthers sign 2 players to active roster, promote 2 more for Week 1

The Panthers made a handful of moves just ahead of their regular-season opener in New Orleans.

The Carolina Panthers made a handful of last-minute adjustments before this weekend’s regular-season opener.

As announced on Saturday, the team placed tight end Ian Thomas on injured reserve—helping prompt one of two new additions to the active roster. Taking Thomas’ spot will be fellow tight end Feleipe Franks, who entered September as a member of Carolina’s practice squad.

Franks, a quarterback during his collegiate career at the University of Florida, cracked into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in 2021. He began his transition to the tight end position in the summer of 2022.

The Panthers first inked Franks on July 26, 2024, waived him a month later during their initial roster cutdown and then re-signed him to the practice squad. He’ll help provide some depth at tight end with the absences of Thomas and starter Tommy Tremble, who has been ruled out of Sunday’s matchup against the New Orleans Saints with a hamstring injury.

Joining Franks on the active roster is defensive lineman Jayden Peevy, another member of the team’s practice squad.

Carolina also promoted running back Mike Boone and safety Lonnie Johnson for the contest.

Some faces you’ll recognize—such as quarterback Jack Plummer, running back Mike Boone, wide receiver Jalen Coker, linebacker Chandler Wooten and safety Alex Cook, who appeared in 10 games for the Panthers during the 2023 campaign.

And same faces you’ll have to get to know—such as offensive lineman Ja’Tyre Carter, linebackers Tarron Jackson and Thomas Inboom and cornerback Lonnie Johnson, who spent last season with the NFC South rival New Orleans Saints.

The Panthers officially announced their claims for six players on Wednesday.

Yes, guys. It’s official. It’s confirmed. The deals are sealed.

Following yesterday’s cutdowns to this season’s initial 53-man rosters, the Carolina Panthers announced waiver claims for six players on Wednesday afternoon. The group features former Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Keenan Isaac, former New York Jets cornerback Shemar Bartholomew, former Washington Commanders cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields, former Seattle Seahawks linebackers Jamie Sheriff and Jon Rhattigan and former San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Jarrett Kingston.

Carolina’s fresh trio of cornerbacks is headlined by Isaac, who had a standout preseason for the divisional rival Bucs. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound defensive back earned a 90.2 coverage grade from Pro Football Focus over his three exhibition outings on the summer.

To make room for the claims, the Panthers also announced the departures of six players from their initial 53-man roster—wide receivers Ihmir Smith-Marsette and Jalen Coker, offensive lineman Cade Mays, defensive lineman Jayden Peevy, cornerback D’Shawn Jamison and safety Demani Richardson.

Final NFL Roster cutdowns for the 2024 season have been completed, and a pair of former Texas A&M football players have made the initial 53-man roster for the Carolina Panthers. 2022 UFDA DL Jayden Peevy and 2024 UDFA safety Demani Richardson will be teammates for the time being after both being retained during the final cuts.

While it’s still early, all of the teams in the NFL are bound to do more roster churning as teams raid free agency. Richardson has received praise throughout camp from his teammates and is showing signs of returning for his All-SEC form.

“He moves really well. I know he was playing a lot of like kind of big nickel in college and I definitely see those cover skills. We’ve been seeing his ball skills in the past couple of days, too. I mean, there’s not too many things that DeMoni can’t do on the football field. So I’m really excited to see what he does next,” – Jordan Fuller

Peevy has spent the majority of his professional career on the practice squads of the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, and the Carolina Panthers. His size and athletic ability make him an interesting piece on the roster in some capacity. Panthers 2024 draft pick to miss time with high-ankle sprain

Panthers HC Dave Canales provided a few injury updates following Thursday night’s preseason opener.

The Carolina Panthers’ preseason opener, which resulted in a 17-3 loss to the New England Patriots on Thursday night, also resulted in a few injuries.

Head coach Dave Canales provided some updates on the setbacks this afternoon, following the team’s first practice since the exhibition outing. He started with second-year offensive lineman Cade Mays.

“Cade had a shoulder—an AC sprain,” Canales said. “So that’ll be a couple of weeks for us to get him back out there.”

Mays played 28 offensive snaps in the contest, one where the Panthers were already low on frontline depth. He recorded 25 of those snaps at center and three at right guard.

Canales then addressed the status of rookie defensive lineman Jaden Crumedy.

“And then Crumedy—that was a high-ankle sprain,” he added. “I’m not sure the exact timetable there. I’ll be able to get you more information on that.”

Crumedy was selected in the sixth round of the 2024 draft.

Prior to the start of today’s session, the Panthers signed defensive lineman Jayden Peevy, who spent much of the 2023 season on the team’s practice squad.
