Michigan State basketball dominates second half for win over Oakland

Michigan State basketball uses strong second half to knock off Oakland on Tuesday night in Detroit

Michigan State used a big second half to remain perfect all-time against in-state rival Oakland on Tuesday night.

The Spartans turned a narrow halftime lead into a convincing victory over Oakland, topping the Grizzlies by the final score of 77-58 from the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. The Spartans used multiple big runs to pull away in the second half for the win.

The first half was tight throughout with neither team being able to build a lead bigger than six points in the opening frame. Oakland shot way above its average from deep in the first half, which helped keep the Grizzlies within the game. When it was all said and done, Michigan State held a 31-30 lead going into the break.

Michigan State jumped on the Grizzlies to open the second half, with a 10-1 run to build a double-digit lead. Oakland would respond and get the Spartans lead back to one possession, but from that point on it was all Michigan State.

The Spartans were led in scoring by Xavier Booker, who scored 18 points off the bench. He played especially well in the second half to help Michigan State pull away from the Grizzlies. Jaden Akins (16 points) and Jaxon Kohler (14 points) also reached double-digits in scoring on the night. Kohler recorded yet another double-double, grabbing 13 rebounds for the Spartans.

With the win, Michigan State improves to 9-2 overall on the year.

Next up for Michigan State is a home game against Florida Atlantic on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff from the Breslin Center is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.

Jaxon Kohler replaces Xavier Booker in MSU basketball starting lineup

Jaxon Kohler gets the nod over Xavier Booker in MSU’s starting lineup

Tom Izzo has made a change to his team ahead of the Spartans matchup with Bowling Green inside of the Breslin Center on Saturday night.

At the power forward spot in the starting lineup, Jaxon Kohler will now be the starter ahead of Xavier Booker.

To start the 2024-25 season, Kohler has averaged 12.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Booker has struggled, only averaging 3.7 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.

Hopefully this is the spark that Booker needs, while maintaining Kohler’s success.

Jaxon Kohler talks increased role after final exhibition

Watch Jaxon Kohler talk about his role, MSU’s win over Ferris State

Michigan State big man Jaxon Kohler has seen his role start to increase with the Spartans after a stellar offseason. In the offseason exhibitions, Kohler has arguably been the best big on the Spartans roster.

Following the final exhibition win against Ferris State, Kohler spoke to the media at his locker in the locker room, talking about his role and this MSU team.

Tom Izzo, Jaden Akins both say Michigan State basketball big man has improved a lot

One Michigan State big man has gotten the attention of his coach and peers

Last season, Jaxon Kohler missed a big chunk of time with a foot injury, and never looked quite comfortable upon his return. This year, it looks like he could be in line for a big role with Michigan State basketball, if his coach and teammate’s opinion are any indication.

When Jaden Akins was asked who has improved the most since last season, he apparently gave a very quick answer: Jaxon Kohler.

Tom Izzo, in his press conference Thursday, echoed a similar sentiment, saying Kohler ‘is a lot different player than he was a year and a half ago’ and that he ‘is really driven to accomplish something.’

While it was incoming transfer center Szymon Zapala who started in the Spartans’ first exhibition of the preseason, it will be worth keeping an eye on Kohler this year to see how he has improved his game.

Tom Izzo raves about progression from one particular MSU big man

One particular big man has impressed Tom Izzo so far in preseason practices

Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo has been impressed from what he’s seen so far in preseason practices from one particular Spartans big man.

Izzo met with the media earlier this week and he singled out Jaxon Kohler as someone that has been impressive so far. According to Jake Lyskawa of On3, Izzo said Kohler has become more versatile, and has “liked what (he’s) been seeing.”

Kohler is entering his third year with the Spartans, recording 55 career appearances in his first two seasons at Michigan State. Last year, he averaged two points and two rebounds across just under 10 minutes per game. Kohler, though, was coming off an injury that kept him out for a good chunk of the early season.

Michigan State basketball big man Jaxon Kohler drops 58 points at Moneyball Pro-Am

Another summer, another big Moneyball performance from Jaxon Kohler

They might have to rename the Moneyball Pro-Am the ‘Jaxon Kohler Show’, because that’s what it’s been the last two years. A year after Jaxon Kohler dropped 53 points in the annual event that features numerous Michigan State basketball players, Kohler upped the ante, dropping 58 points for Team Tri-Star Trust.

Tri-Star Trust, which also features Gehrig Normand, is the only undefeated team in the Moneyball Pro-Am as the playoffs open next week. They beat Team Motorcars, which featured Jaden Akins and Xavier Booker.

Other results from the night, as reported by Spartans Illustrated, include:

  • Snipes (Tre Holloman, Carson Cooper) 91 – Faygo (Coen Carr, Jase Richardson) 87
  • Goodfellas (Kur Teng, Szymon Zapala) 100 – Case Credit Union (Frankie Fidler, Jesse McCulloch) 96

MSU basketball F Jaxon Kohler expected back vs. Northwestern or next week

It appears Michigan State basketball could be getting back forward Jaxon Kohler this week or next

It appears Michigan State basketball could be getting back forward Jaxon Kohler this week or next.

Spartans head coach Tom Izzo said Kohler practiced on Tuesday and is expected to return for his first game of the year either against Northwestern on Sunday or next week. Izzo listed Kohler as doubtful for the Spartans’ next game on Thursday against Penn State.

Kohler injured his foot in the preseason and has yet to play for the Spartans this year. His return should provide more depth to Michigan State in the post and should be a big addition moving forward.

Michigan State basketball F Malik Hall questionable vs Wisconsin

Malik Hall is questionable for MSU’s game against Wisconsin:

Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo mentioned that Malik Hall was dealing with the flu and it has kept him out of action for this past weekend at practice. Now, ahead of the Spartans Tuesday night clash with Wisconsin, the team has released its availability report and it is Hall that is listed as questionable to play in the game.

Of note in the availability report, Jaxon Kohler is still out with his foot injury.

The Spartans and Badgers will tip off just past 7 p.m.

MSU PF Jaxon Kohler named 2023 Moneyball ProAm MVP

Michigan State power forward Jaxon Kohler has been named the Moneyball ProAm Most Valuable Player for the 2023 season

Michigan State power forward Jaxon Kohler has been named the Moneyball ProAm Most Valuable Player for the 2023 season.

Kohler received this impressive honor on Monday. He averaged 34.5 points per game during this year’s annual summer event.

Kohler averaged only 3 points per game during his freshman season this past year. But this stellar showing during the Moneyball ProAm event could be a sign of what’s to come during the 2023-24 season. That isn’t always the case, of course, but let’s hope it means we will see an even better Kohler for the Spartans this upcoming season.
