What the Browns are getting in Javon Wims

What the Browns are getting in Javon Wims #Browns

The Cleveland Browns continue making moves in free agency and have decided to add more depth to their receiving corps. The receivers look to be extremely solid this season with the addition of a few draft picks and a big name in Amari Cooper, but another underrated signing has arrived in Javon Wims.

Javon Wims is a name a few people may remember from his reasonably successful career during his time at SEC power, Georgia. Wims actually saw some meaningful starting snaps for the Chicago Bears. Wims was a seventh-round selection by Chicago in 2018. He was in Chicago until 2021, when he joined the Las Vegas Raiders and was eventually released after the season, but that’s enough of his past, let’s take a dive into what he can bring to the Browns.

Cleveland Browns sign former Georgia WR

Wims was UGA’s leading receiver for the 2017 national title run…

On Thursday, the NFL’s Cleveland Browns announced the signing of former Georgia receiver Javon Wims.

Wims spent three seasons with the Chicago Bears, who drafted the Jacksonville, Fla., native in the seventh-round of the 2018 draft.

Wims played in 33 games for the Bears (seven starts) and caught 28 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns before being waved before the 2020 season.

The former Bulldog spent last season on the Las Vegas Raiders’ practice squad.

In Athens (2016-2017), Wims was the leading receiver for the UGA team that made a national title run in 2017, catching 45 passes for 720 yards and sevens scores.

Browns add receiver and defensive end Wednesday

Browns add depth pieces to two positions on the team that could find veterans returning to Cleveland if everything works out but can’t be assumed:

The Cleveland Browns are a team in transition during the 2022 offseason. A lot of moves have been made on the offensive side of the ball with veterans like Jarvis Landry, Austin Hooper, J.C. Tretter and Case Keenum gone from the team. Deshaun Watson, Amari Cooper, Jakeem Grant, Jacoby Brissett, Ethan Pocic and Josh Dobbs have been added as replacements.

With the NFL draft just around the corner, the team’s needs still seem in line with what we thought prior to the start of the offseason. Defensive end, defensive tackle, wide receiver and kicker still linger as the Browns look to compete for the Super Bowl.

While the team can hope Jadeveon Clowney will return and Jarvis Landry will be swayed by championship aspirations instead of home-state interests, they can’t assume either.

While not replacements for either of those two veterans, Cleveland did add Isaac Rochell and Javon Wims to their roster on Wednesday.

Rochell has played in 63 games since being drafted in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL draft. He has compiled 15 quarterback hits, 10 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks during that time. He has the ability to slide inside as well on passing downs.

Wims was also a seventh-round pick, in 2018, playing three years for the Chicago Bears. He has just 28 receptions, 266 yards and two touchdowns on his resume. Based on his relative athletic score, he seems best suited as an outside receiver and someone who can help on special teams:

Two more depth pieces or competition in place for the Browns as we march toward next Thursday’s NFL draft.

Las Vegas has Zay Jones, Henry Ruggs III, Willie Snead IV, Bryan Edwards, and Hunter Renfrow as their current receivers. Tight end Darren Waller is the Raiders’ top pass catching threat.

The Chicago Bears waived Javon Wims ahead of the 2021 NFL season. Now Wims has a new NFL home in Las Vegas.

Javon Wims was drafted by Chicago in seventh-round of the 2018 NFL draft. Wims was suspended two games last season for punching New Orleans Saints cornerback C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

Twitter reacts to Bears waiving WR Javon Wims

The Bears waived WR Javon Wims, and Twitter rejoiced about his release and Rodney Adams’ chances of making the roster getting better.

The Javon Wims era has finally come to an end in Chicago as the Bears waived the former seventh-round pick on Thursday. Wims had been dealing with an oblique injury for the last week, and he was falling behind in the wide receiver battle for the final two roster spots.

Wims is best known for two things — taking a swing at Saints safety CJ Gardner-Johnson and, most recently, dropping a touchdown pass from Mitch Trubisky in the Bears’ wild-card playoff loss to New Orleans last season.

As you can imagine, Bears Twitter was quite animated following the roster move, as many had Wims pegged as a roster cut for some time. While some are just ready to move on from the Wims era, there are others that see this as a clearer path to preseason darling Rodney Adams earning a spot on the 53-man roster.

Bears waive WR Javon Wims, sign DB Dionte Ruffin

The Bears waived WR Javon Wims on Thursday, a move that’s been anticipated for most of the summer.

Ahead of Saturday’s preseason finale against the Tennessee Titans, the Chicago Bears have made a roster move that many were expecting at some point this summer.

The Bears have waived wide receiver Javon Wims and signed defensive back Dionte Ruffin in his place.

Wims suffered an oblique injury, which held him out of last week’s preseason game against the Bills and this week of practice.

Wims, a former seventh-round pick by Chicago, has been a mainstay on the Bears roster over since 2018. Wims’ best season came in 2019, where he had 18 receptions for 186 yards and one touchdown in 16 games. Last season was a bit of a letdown, where Wims had just six receptions for 48 yards and a score.

Wims is best known for two things in Chicago — both of which cast a negative light — whether it was punching Saints safety CJ Gardner-Johnson or dropping a touchdown from Mitch Trubisky in the Bears’ playoff loss to New Orleans last season.

The Bears have had a competitive battle at wide receiver this summer, where guys like Rodney Adams and Chris Lacy have stepped up. Wims has been plagued by drops and being sidelined with an injury certainly didn’t help matters.

8 takeaways from the Bears’ 15th training camp practice

From Justin Fields’ off day to a whole lot of drops by Bears receivers, here’s what we learned from Tuesday’s practice.

The Chicago Bears returned to the practice field Tuesday at Halas Hall for their first padded practice since their preseason opener.

Following a so-so Monday practice by quarterbacks Andy Dalton and Justin Fields, Dalton and the first-team offense had a nice bounce back day, although it was certainly the defense’s day once again. Unfortunately for Fields, he had perhaps his worst practice of camp so far.

Following Tuesday’s practice, here’s a look at what we learned from Day 15 of training camp:

Bears training camp: 1 player currently on the roster bubble at each position

Heading into the Bears’ first preseason game, here’s a look at one player who’s on the roster bubble at each position.

The Chicago Bears released their first unofficial depth chart ahead of Saturday’s preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins, where there were some surprises, and it gave us a look at how the 53-man roster could ultimately shake out.

There are a handful of players who are on the roster bubble, as indicated by the depth chart and how training camp has unfolded over the first couple of weeks.

Heading into the Bears’ first preseason game, here’s a look at one player who’s on the roster bubble at each position.

6 takeaways from Bears’ first unofficial depth chart

The Bears have released their first unofficial depth chart ahead of their preseason opener, and there was plenty to unpack.

The Chicago Bears released their first unofficial depth chart ahead of their preseason opener against the Miami Dolphins. But before the Bears and Dolphins square off on Saturday at Soldier Field, the two will hold a couple of joint practices at Halas Hall.

When looking at Chicago’s first unofficial depth chart, there are some things that aren’t much of a surprise — Andy Dalton being listed as the starting quarterback and the Bears’ top wide receivers listed as Allen Robinson, Darnell Mooney and Marquise Goodwin. But there are also plenty of surprises.

Here’s what we learned from the Bears’ first unofficial depth chart:

How the Anthony Miller trade impacts wide receiver battle at Bears training camp

The Anthony Miller trade benefits two veteran receivers as they compete for a roster spot at Bears training camp.

The Chicago Bears made headlines when news leaked that they’re trading fourth-year wide receiver Anthony Miller to the Houston Texans, for what NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says is the two teams swapping late-round draft picks.

The writing has certainly been on the wall for Miller this offseason amid rumors about the Bears shopping him and the new weapons they brought in with Marquise Goodwin, Damiere Byrd and rookie Dazz Newsome.

Miller showed flashes of his potential over the last three years, but he was never able to consistently put it together. His ejection in the wild-card playoff game seemed to be the final straw for the Bears.

Now that Miller’s time in Chicago is done, it’s time to look ahead at what this Bears receivers room will be in 2021. Heading into training camp, one of the most intriguing position battles taking place is at the receiver, where there are four roster spots up for grabs behind Allen Robinson and Darnell Mooney, who are virtual locks.

But how does the Miller trade impact the competition at receiver?

Following impressive offseason for Goodwin and Byrd, they’re favorites to lock down a roster spot. That also includes Newsome, who was rehabbing from a broken collarbone and is expected to be a big special teams contributor. That leaves veterans Javon Wims and Riley Ridley on the outside looking in.

Miller’s departure is the best possible thing that could’ve happened to Wims and Ridley, who suddenly have a clearer path to the 53-man roster as Miller’s roster spot is now up for grabs.

While no one’s spots are guaranteed, outside of Robinson and Mooney, it feels like that final receiver roster spot will come down to Wims and Ridley, who are facing their most important training camp and preseason of their careers.

Right now, the favorite to win that final spot is Wims, simply for the fact that he’s seen more reps than Ridley, who was been a healthy scratch for most of his career with the Bears.

But the receiver battle just got a lot more interesting.
