Eagles vs. Cowboys: 4 things to watch on offense

Eagles vs. Cowboys: 4 things to watch on offense

The Eagles (7-7) will host the Cowboys (7-7) in an important NFC East battle in Week 16 at Lincoln Financial Field.

The details are simple, ff the Cowboys win, they will clinch the division. If the Eagles win, they’ll need to beat the Giants in the regular-season finale or hope the Cowboys lose to Washington.

The Eagles are 2-5 against the Cowboys since Doug Pederson took over in 2016 and have lost the last four games to the Cowboys, dating back to 2017.

Here are 4 things to watch when Philadelphia is on offense:

***

1. Eagles use of the screen game

Besides the Carson Wentz to Zach Ertz connection, the only sure thing on offense for Philadelphia this season has been the utilization of the screen game.

The Cowboys defense is one of the worst units at defending the screen, allowing the second-most total yards on screens (465) in the NFL, per Sports Info Solutions. Last week during their win against the Rams, the Cowboys gave up 58 total yards and four first down on four screen passes.

The Eagles haven’t done much well all season on offense, but they’ve excelled at turning screens into opportunistic gains, with the offensive line clearing space for Miles Sanders and Boston Scott to flourish.

3 Eagles land in the top-10 of ranking of the NFL’s top-25 offensive linemen

Brandon Brooks is NFL’s top offensive linemen according to PFF

Two of the NFL’s top offensive lines will be on display Sunday when the Philadelphia Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field.

Both teams boast some of the top players at their position and annually are in the rankings for the top five skill groups in football.

Pro Football Focus recently released their top-25 offensive linemen in the NFL, and the Eagles landed three players in the top-10.

Eagles left guard is currently the highest-graded offensive linemen in all of football, his running mate Lane Johnson is No. 5 and the future Hall of Famer, Jason Peters landed at No. 10.

The Cowboys had two players in the top-10, with Zach Martin landing at No. 3 and right tackle, La’el Collins at No. 8.

Jason Kelce landed at No. 14, as the top center in all of football.

Eagles ever-improving LG Isaac Seumalo named to PFF’s NFL Week 15 Team of the Week

Isaac Seumalo named to PFF’s NFL Week 15 Team of the Week

Isaac Seumalo has come a long from that Week 2 thrashing he suffered at the hands of Grady Jarrett and the Atlanta Falcons.

The least known member of the Eagles starting five on the offensive line, Seumalo has worked and improved and the determination is paying off. Seumalo was solid in the Eagles win over the Redskins and has gotten better every week.

In Week 15, Seumalo got the ultimate honor, grading out so well that he was named to Pro Football Focus’s NFL Team of the Week.

LG ISAAC SEUMALO, PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
The much-maligned left guard has actually been very solid over the second half of the season. The image of him getting worked over for eight pressures against the Falcons in Week 2 can be difficult to get out of your mind, but from Week 6 on, Seumalo has been the ninth-highest-graded guard in the NFL.

Emerging middle linebacker and undrafted rookie, T.J. Edwards also made the team for his special team’s contributions on Sunday.

Eagles RT Lane Johnson leaves game vs. Giants with ankle injury

Lane Johnson leaves game vs. Giants after suffering an ankle injury

The Philadelphia Eagles were already down four starters, and just lost Alshon Jeffery to a foot injury, now the Birds could be without starting right tackle Lane Johnson.

Johnson had his knee rolled up on by Carson Wentz after the quarterback was sacked on a third-down play.

Johnson limped off and is now listed as questionable to return.

Johnson recently became the highest-paid tackle in the NFL and was also mourning the loss of his grandmother, who he dedicated this game too.

Eagles Injury Report: Zach Ertz did not participate, 4 other starters listed as limited

The Philadelphia Eagles released their Thursday estimated injury report for the team’s Thanksgiving day injury release and Zach Ertz is trending towards not playing.

Had the Eagles practice, Ertz likely would have sat out again and if he can’t practice on Friday, he could be a scratch with a hamstring injury.

Nelson Agholor, Jordan Howard, Alshon Jeffery, and Jason Peters are all trending in the right direction, while Lane Johnson, Brandon Brooks, and Carson Wentz all look good to go for Sunday in Miami.

Lane Johnson says he’ll be cleared from concussion protocol

The Philadelphia Eagles were without five offensive starters on Sunday during their loss to the Seahawks, but reinforcements appear to be on the way.

Alshon Jeffery appears to be trending in the right direction, while Lane Johnson confirmed that he’ll be cleared from the concussion protocol on Tuesday and that should set up the Eagles right tackle to play against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday.

Head coach Doug Pederson told the media that he’s confident Johnson will practice on Wednesday and should be good to go for Sunday in Miami.

With the team set to prepare for a trip to Miami to face the Dolphins, here’s the Eagles snap count for the game vs. the Seahawks.

***

Quarterback:

Carson Wentz 76 snaps

Wentz suffered a hand injury in the game but didn’t miss any actual offensive snaps. He struggled mightily and he’ll have the hand evaluated further on Monday.

Offensive Line:

Jason Peters 76 snaps, Isaac Seumalo 76 snaps, Jason Kelce 76 snaps, Halapoulivaati Vaitai 65 snaps, Matt Pryor 42 snaps, Andre Dillard 36 snaps, Brandon Brooks 12 snaps.

Dillard replaced Lane Johnson at right tackle and he struggled until being benched for Vaitai, with Matt Pryor moving to right guard after Brandon Brooks suffered an anxiety attack.

Running Back:

Miles Sanders 64 snaps, Jay Ajayi 9 snaps, Boston Scott 3 snaps

Ajayi carried the ball six times, while Miles Sanders only had 12 carries on 64 snaps. The Seahawks reportedly knew what the Eagles were running based on the formation and personnel in the game.

Wide Receiver:

Jordan Matthews 73 snaps, JJ Arcega-Whiteside 54 snaps, Greg Ward 37 snaps, Mack Hollins 4 snaps,

Ward now has just as many catches as Arcega-Whiteside and he accomplished it in one half of football. Even with Ward playing well, Eagles receivers struggled to gain separation. Matthews has 4 catches on 12 targets for 33 yards in two games.

Tight End:

Zach Ertz 66 snaps, Dallas Goedert 66 snaps

Ertz had his best individual game of the season, while Goedert has seemed to regress somewhat as a player in his second year.

Defensive Line:

Derek Barnett 53 snaps, Brandon Graham 51 snaps, Fletcher Cox 49 snaps, Timmy Jernigan 33 snaps, Anthony Rush 25 snaps, Vinny Curry 23 snaps, Josh Sweat 20 snaps, Albert Huggins 15 snaps, Genard Avery 2 snaps.

Cox and Graham need more help, while the Eagles gave up a fourth-round pick for Avery, yet barely use him.

Linebacker:

Nigel Bradham 65 snaps, Nate Gerry 35 snaps, Kamu Grugier-Hill 22 snaps, T.J. Edwards 2 snaps.

Bradham played well in his return to the lineup, while Grugier-Hill played less after a stud performance against New England.

Defensive Back:

Malcolm Jenkins 65 snaps, Rodney McLeod 64 snaps, Jalen Mills 62 snaps, Ronald Darby 61 snaps, Avonte Maddox 45 snaps, Marcus Epps 17 snaps, Rasul Douglas 6 snaps

Eagles Final Injury Report: 2 starters ruled out for game vs. Seahawks

The Philadelphia Eagles will be without a key starter in their huge home matchup with the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The Eagles released their final injury report, with Lane Johnson listed as out for the contest.

Nelson Agholor (knee), safety Rudy Ford (abdomen) and Johnson (concussion) were not at practice. Eagles wide receiver Alshon Jeffery (ankle) and linebacker Nigel Bradham (ankle) were at practice and should be game-time decisions.

Rookie Andre Dillard will make his first career start at right tackle.

Jordan Howard hasn’t been cleared for contact and could miss his second straight game. Howard suffered a shoulder injury in the win over the Chicago Bears on Nov. 3, which was described as a “stinger”.
