Rio Grande Valley Vipers finalize roster for G League ‘bubble’ season

The roster for Houston’s affiliate features several players with NBA experience, including Josh Huestis, Ray Spalding, and Kenny Wooten.

The Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Vipers, who are the NBA G League affiliate organization of the Houston Rockets, finalized their roster for the upcoming 2021 season at the Disney World “bubble” near Orlando.

The Vipers’ roster includes returning players William McDowell-White, Shawn Occeus, and Ray Spalding. In addition, 2021 NBA G League draftees Armoni Brooks and Jarron Cumberland are joining RGV.

The RGV roster now stands at 12, including two-way players Mason Jones and Brodric Thomas. All are eligible to join the squad at the “bubble” site when the season begins in February. (That said, since Jones currently has a rotation role with the short-handed Rockets, he might stay with the parent organization at the NBA level for a while longer.)

The complete roster can be seen below.

The returning player rights to Josh Huestis were acquired by Rio Grande Valley via a trade with Austin Spurs during the 2019-20 season, and he returns to the United States after a stint with Bayern Munich (German Basketball League) last season. Josh Reaves, Kenny Wooten, and Trevelin Queen are joining the Vipers as affiliated players.

Houston’s G League affiliate drafts Armoni Brooks, Jarron Cumberland

Brooks and Cumberland, who played in college at Houston and Cincinnati, will report to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers for the 2020-21 season.

The Rio Grande Valley Vipers, who are an affiliate organization of the Houston Rockets, selected 6-foot-3 guard Armoni Brooks and 6-foot-5 guard Jarron Cumberland with the No. 10 and No. 12 overall picks in Monday’s 2020-21 NBA G League draft.

Brooks played three college seasons at the University of Houston from 2016 through 2019, and he was with the G League’s College Park Skyhawks last season — an Atlanta Hawks affiliate. Known best for his shooting, Brooks made 40.1% of his 3-pointers in the G League last season on high volume, averaging 5.6 attempts in 21.0 minutes per game.

Meanwhile, Cumberland played four seasons at the University of Cincinnati from 2016 through 2020. In his 2019-20 senior campaign, he averaged 15.5 points and 4.9 assists in 32.4 minutes per game.

The NBA G League will begin its 2020-21 campaign in February at the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, similar to the NBA’s “bubble” format utilized to complete the 2019-20 season. The Vipers are among 18 G League franchises who have committed to participate.

From Houston’s perspective, their relationship with the Vipers offers an opportunity to evaluate younger players and allow them to develop under the tutelage of a coaching staff selected by the Rockets.

Here’s a look at video highlights of the newest Vipers. Rio Grande Valley has yet to formally announce its roster for the 2020-21 season.

Tennessee at Cincinnati odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Wednesday’s Tennessee Volunteers at Cincinnati Bearcats betting odds and lines, with NCAA basketball betting picks and bets.

The Tennessee Volunteers (7-2, 0-0 SEC) and the Cincinnati Bearcats (6-4, 0-0 AAC) square off Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET at Fifth Third Arena. We analyze the Tennessee-Cincinnati odds and betting lines, while providing college basketball betting tips and advice on this matchup.

Tennessee at Cincinnati: Three things you need to know

1. The Bearcats are looking to bounce back after a stunning 67-66 loss at home to Colgate. G Jarron Cumberland fired up a 3-pointer with about five seconds left, as Colgate came down with it and ended up at the free-throw line to win it.

2. The Volunteers are coming off a 51-47 loss against Memphis last time out. That’s the bad news. The good news is the defense hasn’t allowed 70 or more points all season.

3. Both teams are a disaster against the number, as the Vols are 1-4 against the spread in the past five overall and 2-5 ATS in the past seven on the road, while the Bearcats are 8-23 ATS in the past 31 overall dating back to last season.

Prediction

Tennessee 69, Cincinnati 55

Moneyline (ML)

TENNESSEE (-125) is worth a considerable bet on the road, as the ranked Volunteers face a Cincinnati (+105) side that can’t seem to get out of its own way lately.

A $10 bet on the Vols to win outright would return a profit of $8.

Against the Spread (ATS)

TENNESSEE (-1.5, -110) is expected to win, and all it has to do is win by a bucket to cover. The Volunteers are a better value against the spread. While they have struggled on the road against the number, the Bearcats (+1.5, -110) are coming off a home loss to Colgate, they have dropped two in a row, and they have won just once in regulation over their past four home games. They’re not playing good ball right now.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 129.5 (-106) is worth a small-unit play, although confidence is not high. Tennessee’s defense has been strong this season, however, and that’s not what Cincinnati needs as it looks to bounce back.

PREVIEW: The Rebels finally have a little bit of momentum back after dismantling Jackson State on Tuesday—and they’ll need it for arguably their toughest game of the early season against Cincinnati.

The tilt with the Bearcats is UNLV’s first in a three-game road trip, which also features their MWC opener against Fresno State and a semi-neutral site matchup in Salt Lake City against BYU.

The shooting woes that had plagued the Rebels throughout the first handful of games were nowhere to be found in their 80-57 win over Jackson State. The team shot 57.1% from the field and 45% from downtown. That’s exactly the kind of production UNLV will need to take down Cincinnati.

Junior guard Amauri Hardy leads the team with 18.3 points and 3.5 assists per game, followed by transfers Donnie Tillman (12.0 PPG, 4.6 RPG) and  Elijah Mitrou-Long (10.9 PPG, 3.9 APG).

And though Hardy led the way again on Tuesday with 20 points, the most important offensive contribution of the night came from junior Chiekh Mbacke Diong. The Senegalese big man tallied 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while also pulling down six of his 13 rebounds on the offensive glass. It was a huge outburst out of a player who has been notably anemic on that end of the floor.

Bryce Hamilton and Nick Blair also pitched in 12 points apiece, which could signal an important development for TJ Otzelberger. This team needs scoring support behind Hardy, Tillman, and Mitrou-Long. If they can get it, they could turn into a top-half team in the Mountain West. Getting transfer sharpshooter Jonah Antonio back in the lineup will help that cause.

But first, they have to take on a talented Cincinnati squad that has been receiving votes for the Top 25.

New head coach John Brannen has seen a few stumbles in his first couple games at the helm for the Bearcats, including an overtime loss at the Paradise Jam on Tuesday against Bowling Green. Cincinnati recovered to claw out an overtime win of their own against Valparaiso the next day.

While the Bearcats have been pretty good defensively, the offense has not held up its end of the bargain. The offseason was full of promise after it was announced that Oakland transfer Jaevin Cumberland would be joining his cousin (and one of the best players in the American), Jarron.

Though the team does have five players averaging double-digits (or very close), including both Cumberlands, the Bearcats have been plagued by turnovers. They committed 58 giveaways in three games at the Paradise Jam, barely eking out a 2-1 record, including their one-point victory over Illinois State in their first game at the event.

UNLV has had its fair share of issues with ball security, too, so expect this game to get a little sloppy.

Junior seven-footer Chris Vogt and senior forward Tre Scott average a combined 23 points and 17 rebounds, presenting a big challenge for the Rebels in the frontcourt. Keith Williams has also been a solid source of offense for the Bearcats.

But with the Bearcats suddenly struggling—and coming off some long travel to and from the Virgin Islands—the Rebels may have a chance to catch Cincinnati on the ropes.

All told, it will be difficult for UNLV to escape with a victory against a Cincinnati team that is probably bound for the NCAA Tournament. If the Rebels can grab a big road win here, it will give them a boost to get through the back half of their non-conference schedule.

Prediction: Cincinnati 74, UNLV 66
