Final team-by-team stat leaders for the 2021 Pac-12 football season

Buffaloes Wire compiles the final stat leaders for each Pac-12 team from the 2021 football season.

It was a wild Pac-12 football season in 2021.

The Oregon Ducks stunned Ohio State in the Horseshoe, and Ducks safety Verone McKinley III tied for the national lead with six interceptions.

Utah won the Pac-12 Championship Game for the first time in school history and made its debut in the Rose Bowl. Washington State ended a seven-year losing streak against Washington in the Apple Cup. UCLA reclaimed the Victory Bell from the USC Trojans, but Lincoln Riley might have something to say about that next season.

With all that in mind, Buffaloes Wire compiles the 2021 season leaders in passing, rushing, receiving, tackling, sacks and interceptions for each Pac-12 team below.

Jarek Broussard to visit Mel Tucker’s Spartans

Jarek Broussard has an official visit set with Michigan State to potentially team up with… Mel Tucker

The Colorado Buffaloes have been gashed by the transfer portal again and again. Sure, they got good news with the addition of Baylor WR R.J. Sneed II, but other than that it has been a terrible time for Karl Dorrell’s program.

Dorrell has expressed his frustrations with the portal, and rightfully so. Then, Jarek Broussard also entered.

The Buffs’ talented RB could now join up with former Colorado head coach Mel Tucker at Michigan State. On Monday, Justin Thind of 247Sports confirmed that Broussard had an in-home visit with Spartans running backs coach Effrem Reed. Thind also reported that Broussard will be visiting Michigan State on Jan. 28.

Oof, that would sting big time — as if Christian Gonzalez transferring to Oregon didn’t hurt enough.

Broussard dashing for Michigan State to join Tucker would be even more painful.

Broussard rushed for a team-high 661 yards last season and scored a pair of touchdowns. In 2020, Broussard ran for 813 yards on fewer carries and scored three touchdowns to win the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year.

He can play, there’s no doubt, and the loss of Broussard will be tough to overcome.

As painful as it would be, the Spartans make a world of sense. Kenneth Walker III is headed for the NFL Draft after a Heisman Trophy-type campaign. Can Broussard step in and be that guy?

This situation will definitely be one to keep an eye on, whether Buffs fans like this or not.

Jarek Broussard announces decision to enter transfer portal

Another elite offensive player for the Buffs is entering the transfer portal

The 2020 Colorado Buffaloes probably don’t make the Alamo Bowl without Jarek Broussard, so this one hurts.

Broussard, the Buffs’ leading rusher from each of the past two seasons, announced his decision to enter the transfer portal on Thursday. He is now the 14th Buff to do so this offseason.

“First of all I want to thank each and every buff fan for unmatched support,” Broussard wrote in a tweet. “My time here in Boulder was amazing and I’ve built some lifelong relationships that will last forever. Through the highs and the lows I would like to thank each and every member on the Colorado athletic staff for their love & support and helping me getting to where I am today. I graduate from Colorado in may and will forever be a proud Alum. With that being said after talking with my family I feel it’s in my best interest to enter the transfer portal.”

The Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2020 will finish his CU career with 1,474 rushing yards and five touchdowns. He now joins Joe Davis and Ashaad Clayton as other Buffs’ tailbacks to recently enter the portal.

Barring any further transfers, the Buffs will rely on Alex Fontenot, Deion Smith, Jayle Stacks and class of 2022 signee Victor Venn to lead the rushing attack next season.

These players will be game-changers in Colorado’s home finale against Washington

These players could be difference makers on Saturday

The 4-6 Washington Huskies will visit Folsom Field on Saturday to take on the 3-7 Colorado Buffaloes in their first meeting since 2019. With their bowl game aspirations still alive, we can expect a strong effort from the Huskies this weekend as they are coming off of back-to-back losses to Oregon and Arizona State.

Colorado, on the other hand, will be looking to rebound from a disastrous second half collapse against UCLA last weekend and finish its season on a more positive note with at least one more win in the bag. Brendon Lewis has finally shown his ability to throw the ball in the last few games, but Colorado’s offensive strength lies with its running backs, and they will look to capitalize against Washington’s weaker run defense.

Washington’s strength lies in its passing game, which the Buffs have struggled to contain on defense this year. Colorado’s secondary is going to have to step up this week.

With all of this in mind, here are four players to keep an eye on during Saturday’s showdown between the Huskies and Buffaloes.

Up First: Jarek Broussard

A struggling Colorado offense prepares to face a gritty Duck defensive unit

An already struggling Colorado offense is going to have to face one of the best defenses in the conference Saturday inside Autzen Stadium.

It’s a matchup that, on paper, just doesn’t set up well for Colorado.

The Ducks and Buffaloes are scheduled to kick off at 12:30 p.m. PST inside Autzen Stadium televised nationally on FOX. Even Colorado might admit it’s not exactly the best time to face Oregon.

Colorado’s offense has struggled all season long to put points on the board and now it faces a healthy Duck defense that looks to keep rolling along.

The Buffaloes rank 11th in the conference in points as they average just 15 points a game. Only Arizona is behind them in putting points on the scoreboard.

They’re last in total yards (238 ypg), passing yards (117 ypg), and ninth in rushing (121 ypg). While Oregon’s defensive rankings aren’t the best in the world, the Ducks have played most games without Kayvon Thibodeaux, which is a completely different defense when he is out there. Just ask California and UCLA.

Colorado’s biggest weapon offensively is tailback Jarek Broussard. Although he is averaging just 48 yards a game, he doesn’t get the carries later in games as the Buffaloes are usually behind. But when they are in the game, Broussard as the ability to do damage.

“He was the conference offensive player of the year last year, extremely quick, dynamic runner and he can make guys miss,” Oregon defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter said. “You design offensive plays where there’s usually someone going to be free, well that guy makes you miss a bunch and you have to have multiple guys at the point of attack.”

Unfortunately for Colorado, however, it’s had to go away from the running game early because they fall behind. The Buffaloes has been held to single digits in three of their seven games so far.

Colorado’s offensive struggles might be due to the fact the Buffaloes are playing a freshman at quarterback in Brendon Lewis. The second-year freshman played in just one game last season, in the Alamo Bowl, but he won the starting job in camp.

Once ranked as the 12th-best duel-threat quarterback in the country out of Melissa, Texas, Lewis has found it difficult throwing the ball downfield on any consistant basis. He did, however, manage to throw for 248 yards and two touchdowns in the 34-0 romp over Arizona two weeks ago.

But he then followed that performance up by throwing for just 69 yards in the 26-3 loss to Cal last weekend.

Last-minute noteworthy notes for Colorado vs. Arizona State

A few random and not-so-random things to know while you wait for kickoff.

Below are a few things to know and watch for as we wait patiently for Colorado’s 8:30 p.m. MST start against Arizona State.

  • After Alex Fontenot eclipsed 1,000 career rushing yards against Minnesota, fellow RB Jarek Broussard sits at 966. If Broussard can amass the milestone against ASU, he would become the fastest to reach 1K in school history.
  • Former UCLA QB Tom Ramsey will be ESPNU’s color analyst for the game. When Ramsey was a Bruins senior in 1982, one of his freshman wide receivers was Karl Dorrell. Thanks, CU Sports Information!
  • This will be Colorado and ASU’s 12th meeting dating back to 2006. The Sun Devils won the first seven but since then, CU has won three of the last four meetings. Nine of the previous 11 meetings have also been night games.
  • Sept. 25 has been an interesting and successful day in Colorado football history. In 1900, the Buffaloes beat West High School in Denver 18-0. And then in 1908, CU took down Longmont High School 6-0. Following four more Sept. 25 contests, the competition heightened in 1971 when then-No. 10 Colorado upset No. 6 Ohio State in Columbus. Overall, the Buffs are 7-4 on the day.

Injury updates heading into Week 3

Injury updates ahead of Saturday’s game against Minnesota

Fortunately for the Buffaloes, there’s not much to report in terms of injuries (knock on wood) going into Minnesota week.

Tailback Jarek Broussard left the Texas A&M game after suffering a fairly big hit to his lower body in the third quarter. On Tuesday, Karl Dorrell said Broussard was “fine” and a participant in practice. Defensive end Terrance Lang, who limped off the field in the second half of the Texas A&M game with an apparent lower leg injury, is also back practicing.

Saftey Chris Miller missed the entirety of Saturday’s game but just like Lang and Broussard, returned to practice. Dorrell said his two defensive assets are dealing with soft tissue injuries and he expects them to be available against Minnesota.

“(Lang) is a little knicked up, but we expect he’s going to be ready to go,” Dorrell said. “Chris, he had a little bit of a soft tissue injury. In his position, he needs to be able to run fast so it’s hard for him to play in a game like that when he’s not full speed, but he made a lot of progress this week. He practiced today so we expect him to be back and ready this week.”

Valero Alamo Bowl: The running back tale of the tape

The Alamo Bowl will feature two running backs who could be the focus of the game. Texas’ Bijan Robinson and Colorado’s Jarek Broussard.

The Valero Alamo Bowl is another opportunity to showcase the talents of the highly touted freshman, Bijan Robinson. He will match up with sophomore running back Jarek Broussard. Both are in their first seasons as starters. Robinson has appeared in more games (8) than Broussard (5). However, the latter has given his team more production. Bijan had to work his way into the starting spot after beginning the year at the No. 3 back on the depth chart.
