Defying the odds: The 10 biggest MMA betting upsets of 2022

Check out the top 10 MMA betting upsets of 2022, according to the oddsmakers, across Bellator, the UFC, PFL and more.

Who doesn’t love a good upset?

In 2022, MMA saw its fair share of underdogs who defied the odds in the UFC, Bellator and beyond. While everyone has an opinion of who should win and who should lose, the oddsmakers (and how the betting public responds) largely get the final say on what history reflects.

This year, with the help of MMA database Tapology, MMA Junkie has compiled the top 10 betting upsets of 2022. Fights that were eligible were those that multiple major online sportsbooks recognized, and that Tapology recorded prior to the close of the betting line.

Promotions eligible include UFC, Bellator, PFL, KSW, DWCS, Road to UFC, Eagle FC, and One Championship.

Check out the top 10 MMA betting upsets of 2022 below. Only major MMA promotions were included in the tally.

Four fights added to Bellator 289, including return of Dalton Rosta

Bellator 289 takes place Dec. 9 and is headlined by two title fights, including the Danny Sabatello vs. Raufeon Stots grudge match.

Bellator has added four new fights to its final event of 2022.

Scheduled for Dec. 9 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., Bellator 289 already featured two bantamweight grand prix fights and a women’s flyweight title fight. Now, its undercard is filling up, too.

Most notably, a middleweight bout between rising contender [autotag]Dalton Rosta[/autotag] (7-0 MMA, 7-0 BMMA) and [autotag]Anthony Adams[/autotag] (9-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) will take place.

Rosta, 26, is undefeated as a professional. In his most recent outing, Rosta dominated blue-chip wrestling prospect Romero Cotton en route to a third-round knockout. Meanwhile, Adams upset former UFC fighter Khalid Murtazaliev via unanimous decision in his Bellator debut in September 2021 and has not competed since.

A promotion official recently notified MMA Junkie of the addition, as well as [autotag]Chris Gonzalez[/autotag] (7-2 MMA, 6-2 BMMA) vs. [autotag]Shamil Nikaev[/autotag] (10-0 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) at lightweight, [autotag]Cass Bell[/autotag] (5-2 MMA, 5-2 BMMA) vs. [autotag]Jared Scoggins[/autotag] (10-2 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) at bantamweight, and [autotag]Kevin Boehm[/autotag] (9-5 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) vs. [autotag]Kai Kamaka[/autotag] (9-5-1 MMA, 3-1 BMMA).

The Boehm vs. Kamaka bout was first reported by BellatorZone.

With the additions, the Bellator 289 lineup includes:

  • Champion Raufeon Stots vs. Danny Sabatello – bantamweight grand prix semifinal for interim title
  • Champion Liz Carmouche vs. Juliana Velasquez – for women’s flyweight title
  • Magomed Magomedov vs. Patchy Mix – bantamweight grand prix semifinal

Bellator 278 adds Cee Jay Hamilton vs. Jared Scoggins

The first of a two-night Bellator doubleheader in Hawaii has its first fight.

A bantamweight bout is the first addition to Bellator 278.

The first leg of a back-to-back night stint in Honolulu will feature a three-round fight between [autotag]Cee Jay Hamilton[/autotag] (15-9 MMA, 0-2 BMMA) and [autotag]Jared Scoggins[/autotag] (10-2 MMA, 0-1 BMMA).

The event takes place Friday, April 22 at Neal S. Blaisdell Arena. The main card airs on Showtime after prelims on MMA Junkie.

Two people with knowledge of the booking recently informed MMA Junkie of the booking but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Hamilton, 35, seeks his first promotional victory in his third attempt. After he signed a multifight deal with Bellator in early 2021, Hamilton lost his debut via submission to contender Magomed Magomedov. He fought his second promotional outing in July 2021, a TKO loss to Matheus Mattos.

Scoggins, 27, looks to rebound from his first inside-the-distance defeat. After three canceled debuts, Scoggins was knocked out violently by Josh Hill at Bellator 272 in December.

Bellator 272 video: Josh Hill clocks Jared Scoggins for one-punch knockout

The fight came to a sudden end early in Round 2 after Josh Hill delivered the boom.

[autotag]Josh Hill[/autotag] punched his ticket Friday to become a Bellator bantamweight grand prix alternate – literally.

Hill scored a one-punch knockout win over [autotag]Jared Scoggins[/autotag] at Bellator 272 from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The finish came suddenly within the first minute of Round 2 after Scoggins hesitated when closing the distance. At that moment, Hill (21-4 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) made Scoggins (10-2 MMA, 0-1 BMMA) pay with a huge right hand that put him to sleep.

Check out the finish below (via Twitter):

Prior to the fight, Bellator announced that an eight-man $1 million bantamweight tournament will commence in early 2022, but Hill was not included in the field. During his post-fight interview, cageside announcer “Big” John McCarthy informed Hill that Bellator president Scott Coker said his performance earned him a spot as an alternate should somebody have to withdraw.

Hill, 35, has won five of his past six bouts and rebounded from a loss to tournament competitor Raufeon Stots this past May.

Winski (11-2 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) signs with Bellator after back-to-back wins over Flavio Carvalho and UFC alum Terrion Ware. Although he hasn’t competed since May 2019, Winski has won seven of his most recent eight outings.

Magomed Magomedov needs new Bellator 255 opponent after Jared Scoggins withdraws

Bellator’s first card of 2021 has taken a hit.

The bad luck continues for [autotag]Jared Scoggins[/autotag].

After his October promotional debut booking was canceled due to circumstances outside of his control, Scoggins (10-1 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) has withdrawn with his upcoming fight against [autotag]Magomed Magomedov[/autotag] at Bellator 255.

A person with knowledge of the withdrawal recently informed MMA Junkie of the change but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Scoggins was supposed to make his promotional debut at Bellator 250 this past October, but his scheduled opponent, Toby Misech, missed weight and the fight was scrapped. En route to signing with Bellator, Scoggins, brother of former UFC fighter Justin Scoggins, won five straight fights and a CFFC title.

As for Magomedov (17-1 MMA, 1-0 BMMA), the former Absolute Championship Berkut champion made his promotional debut at Bellator 254 in December, when he defeated Matheus Mattos by unanimous decision.

With the change, the Bellator 255 lineup includes:

  • Champion Patricio Freire vs. Emmanuel Sanchez – for Bellator featherweight title, grand prix semifinal
  • Mike Hamel vs. Usman Nurmagomedov
  • Neiman Gracie vs. Jason Jackson
  • Tyrell Fortune vs. Matt Mitrione
  • Magomed Magomedov vs. TBA
  • Alejandra Lara vs. Kana Watanabe
  • Manel Nallo vs. TBA
  • Mads Burnell vs. Saul Rogers
  • Chris Gonzalez vs. Roger Huerta
