Jets LB not taking blame for Patriots rookie Drake Maye’s head injury

Jamien Sherwood isn’t taking the blame for Drake Maye’s head injury

New York Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood isn’t taking any blame for his controversial hit that knocked New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye out of the game with a concussion.

The linebacker reaffirmed that he was not trying to injure the signal-caller.

Maye was scrambling for extra yards and attempting to slide when Sherwood came down and made the play. The linebacker hit the quarterback in the head, but he did not receive a penalty.

“If it was helmet to helmet, the ref would have called it for one. He just scrambled the pocket,” Sherwood said, per A to Z Sports’ Sophie Weller. “At the end of the day, I’m trying to get to the ball and him as a runner, he just has to do a better job of protecting himself just like I’m trying to do a good job of protecting myself and him as well.

“I feel like in that moment, I did a great job by going over top of him. My shoulder pad might have hit him in the head, but that’s not intentional. …Like I said, I knew in my heart what I tried to do and that’s keeping him healthy. I pray he’s healthy.”

Maye’s progress this week will be worth monitoring.

The Patriots offense has received a spark from his presence over the last three games. A trip to Tennessee to face the Titans will be the next challenge, as the team looks to put together a winning streak.

Gimme Him: Jamien Sherwood would strengthen Patriots LB group

Jamien Sherwood would be a solid boost to the Patriots’ struggling run defense

The New England Patriots are set to take on the New York Jets on Sunday, as the team looks to pick up their first divisional win of the season.

Several players on the offensive side of the ball have provided a potent offensive attack for the Jets. However, defense is the name of the game for this week’s Gimme Him. Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood would help the Patriots’ defense in a major way.

The 24-year-old defensive standout is one of the younger players on the Jets’ roster. Nevertheless, he has been able to assert himself as a solid rotational piece. He broke into the league in 2021 after playing college football at Auburn.

He has slowly made his way up the linebacker depth chart for the Jets, and it has culminated in a solid season this year. He has recorded 62 total tackles so far this season and filled in admirably as a starter when C.J. Mosley was out.

Sherwood recorded five tackles in the last matchup with New England in September.

New England needs help at the linebacker position with the defense hurting without the presence of Ja’Whaun Bentley. The absence of Bentley has left a hole in the Patriots’ defense, and Sherwood could help fill the void. He would give New England a younger presence on the linebacker unit.

However, his best contribution would be helping to strengthen New England’s run defense. The Patriots currently have the third-worst run defense over the last three games with opponents averaging 185.3 yards per game on the ground against them.

Sherwood would help them plug some holes along the leaky defensive front.

The Patriots need an overhaul on both sides of the ball, but a player like Sherwood would create a potential solution for one of their most glaring weaknesses.

Jets vs. Vikings: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 5

Jets vs. Vikings: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 5

The New York Jets will face the Minnesota Vikings in their upcoming Week 5 matchup.

Even with it being a a cross-conference clash, it will still be the games, within the game, that will make all the difference.

Here are three key matchups to watch during Sunday’s Jets (2-2) against the Vikings (4-0) matchup:

CB Sauce Gardner vs. WR Justin Jefferson

(USAT)

This one needs little introduction.

Gardner is considered among the NFL’s best at his position. The same can be said for Jefferson.

It’s a battle of heavyweights here which will be fun to watch.

OL Olu Fashanu vs. ED Pat Jones II

The Jets offensive line, as a whole, must play better than they did last week. New York’s first-round rookie in Olu Fashanu did not play well in his first start. Pro Football Focus dropped his overall grade for the season all the way down to 45.3 after that outing, which is the third-worst of any tackle in the NFL.

Fashanu will see plenty of edge defender Pat Jones II. The Vikings defender has five sacks.

LB Jamien Sherwood vs. QB Sam Darnold

(Imagn)

As is always the case, it’s a full-defensive effort to stop an opposing quarterback. However, CJ Mosley (toe) is unlikely to play again meaning Sherwood will be in position to be the “quarterback” of the Jets defense once again. He needs to make sure that the Jets defense is in position to stop Darnold throughout the day. Mosley would have had a bit of a leg up on Sherwood, potentially. He was one of Darnold’s former teammates in New York.

Jets vs. Patriots: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 3

Jets vs. Patriots: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 3

The New York Jets will host the New England Patriots in their upcoming Week 3 matchup.

Even with it being a big, early season AFC East clash, it will still be the games, within the game, that will make all the difference.

Here are three key matchups to watch during Thursday’s Jets (1-1) against the Patriots (1-1) matchup:

OL Tyron Smith vs. ED Keion White

(Imagn)

Early in 2024, White is the Patriots’ best defender coming off of the edge. Life without Matthew Judon has gone better than expected because of White and his four sacks in two games.

White will see plenty of Tyron Smith across from him. Pro Football Focus has graded Smith as the 15th best tackle in the NFL after two weeks and he needs to keep up that pace for the sake of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and his team’s running backs behind him.

LB Jamien Sherwood vs. RB Rhamondre Stevenson

(USAT)

Starting middle linebacker CJ Mosley is officially listed as questionable with a toe injury. On a short week, it seems unlikely that he will be fit to play.

Sherwood replaced him last week against the Titans and performed well. He led New York with 12 tackles and was PFF’s highest-graded Jets defender in the 24-17 win.

Sherwood will not be on his own trying to stop Stevenson but he will play a huge part in it. Stevenson is second in the NFL with 201 rushing yards.

WR Garrett Wilson vs. CB Jonathan Jones

(Imagn)

Wilson does lead the Jets in receiving yards with 117 through two games, but there’s more meat on that bone. It’s understandable as him and Rodgers are only two games into building their connection.

Jones will provide a tough matchup for Wilson. PFF has Jones at a solid 71.1 overall mark so far in 2024 and he’s clearly New England’s best defensive back. If Wilson causes him problems, there will be a ripple effect across the Patriots defense.

What we learned from the Jets’ Week 2 win over the Titans

What we learned from the Jets’ Week 2 win over the Titans

The New York Jets (1-1) continued their 2024 NFL schedule with a 24-17 win over the Tennessee Titans (0-2) in Week 2.

Following the victory, as is always the case, we were taught a few things about this football team. There were things to take away from all three phases of the game that was.

With that, here are seven things we learned from the Jets’ win over the Titans:

Rodgers was 18-for-30 passing for 176 yards with two touchdowns. A performance that reminded one of his MVP years? No, of course not, but the clutch throws Rodgers made late in the win showed he’s still got something in his right arm that the Jets should be happy about.

While the Jets defense got the job done in the win, it was not because of cornerback Sauce Gardner. He was uncharacteristically bad. In his last nine games, he was credited with allowing six catches for 59 yards combined. He allowed five for 97 yards in Tennessee.

That said, there is no reason to believe that Gardner won’t go back to normal starting next week against the New England Patriots.

On the flip side for New York’s defense was Will McDonald IV. McDonald led the way with a legendary performance as he mustered up three sacks, including a clutch one late to help lock in the victory.

CJ Mosley (toe) left the Week 2 contest early. The linebacker was replaced by Jamien Sherwood who played incredibly well. Sherwood led the Jets with 12 tackles, including one for loss. Pro Football Focus graded Sherwood as his team’s best defender on the day with an overall mark of 82.7.

It looks like there is room for both Breece Hall and Braelon Allen in the Jets’ backfield. The pair played well against the Titans in their own right. Hall had a very impressive touchdown catch, giving his team the lead in the fourth quarter. After an early receiving score of his own, Allen took home the game-winning carry from 20 yards out.

Irv Charles notched a blocked punt for the Jets’ special teams unit. The Titans have now allowed back-to-back blocked kicks to start their season. Kudos to Charles, though. A good and momentum-changing play.

Haason Reddick watch gets brighter. Sure, McDonald performed well, but the Jets defense lost another pass rusher against the Titans in Jermaine Johnson. His season is over because of an Achilles injury. Now is the time to get Reddick in the door amid his contract dispute…

Taking a look back at the Jets’ 2021 NFL draft class

The Jets released RB Michael Carter on Tuesday and we recap how the team’s 2021 NFL draft class has fared thus far.

The New York Jets are amid a two-game skid right now, being outscored by the Los Angeles Chargers and the Las Vegas Raiders 43-18 in the last two weeks. The Jets held a players-only meeting on Tuesday, and running back Michael Carter was released shortly after.

We are now in the third year of Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas being the head coach-general manager duo for the Jets. The 2021 NFL draft was the first one Saleh and Douglas took part in together, beginning a regime that had fans in New York optimistic about the future.

With the offense struggling with Zach Wilson under center, and Carter being released, now is as good a time as ever to recap how New York’s 2021 NFL draft class has fared thus far.

Auburn in the NFL: Week 6 Recap

Jamel Dean returns, Darius Slayton totals 69 yards, Jamien Sherwood and the Jets upset the Eagles, and Jonathan Jones goes down with another injury.

The NFL season is now a third of the way over and each week throughout the season, Auburn Wire will take a look at some of the most notable performances from Auburn Alumni across the League.

It was a very quiet week for former Tigers, but there were some interesting storylines that stood out this week, including [autotag]Jamel Dean[/autotag]’s return from injury, [autotag]Darius Slayton[/autotag] clicking with his second-string quarterback, Jonathan Jones re-injuring himself, and Jamien Sherwood[autotag] helping the Jets upset the undefeated Eagles.[/autotag]

Here is a look at several headlines from Week 6 that feature Auburn’s top NFL players.

Robert Saleh: LB Jamien Sherwood is the ‘Florham Park strangler’

Robert Saleh: LB Jamien Sherwood is the ‘Florham Park strangler’

Florham Park, New Jersey, with a population of about 12,000, is always buzzing this time of year when the New York Jets roll into town for training camp.

Florham Park is now also home to the “Florham Park strangler”, according to head coach Robert Saleh. That’s the nickname he gave to second-year linebacker Jamien Sherwood when discussing the reserve linebacker group.

“We have a nickname for Sherwood: He’s the Florham Park strangler,” Saleh said, via Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic. “He’s got these long arms, and when he gets his paws on you it’s over.”

Sherwood, the Jets’ fifth-round pick in 2021 out of Auburn who transitioned from safety, is working his way back from a torn Achilles suffered last October during the Jets’ Week 7 loss to the New England Patriots. Before the injury, Sherwood had made four starts as a rookie, including a start at middle linebacker in that Patriots game, in place of the injured C.J. Mosley.

“He’s one of the guys who’s going to be a staple here,” Saleh said after that Patriots game. “He studies his butt off. As for his size, he is going to get bigger when he gets a full NFL offseason and meal plan. He has the ability to uncoil and tackle people, one of the best in the draft. He doesn’t give up many leaky yards. Let’s just say that and he’s only going to get better.”

The Jets have talked up Sherwood numerous times since he landed in New York, and this latest buzz continues to show Sherwood’s progress from his injury and how impressed the Jets continue to be with him.

Jamien Sherwood to miss rest of 2021 season

A former Tiger is out for the year.

Jamien Sherwood will miss the rest of the 2021 season, the New York Jets announced.

Sherwood, who plays linebacker for the New York Jets, suffered a torn achilles in the Jets’ Week 7 loss to the New England Patriots.

Sherwood was a fifth-round pick by the Jets who moved the former safety to linebacker. The transition has gone well, he has appeared in five games and made four starts. He was the starting MIKE linebacker against the PAtriots last week before he suffered his injury.

Sherwood made 14 tackles over 139 snaps before his injury.

Prios to the game, Jets head coach Robert Saleh spoke about the importance of Sherwood,

“He’s one of the guys who’s going to be a staple here,” Saleh said. “He studies his butt off. As for his size, he is going to get bigger when he gets a full NFL offseason and meal plan. He has the ability to uncoil and tackle people, one of the best in the draft. He doesn’t give up many leaky yards. Let’s just say that and he’s only going to get better.”

Jets rookie Jamien Sherwood out for the season

Jets LB Jamien Sherwood will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his Achilles.

Zach Wilson wasn’t the only rookie injured in New York’s Week 7 loss to the Patriots.

LB Jamien Sherwood will miss the remainder of the season after tearing his Achilles, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Sherwood left Sunday’s 54-13 loss with what the Jets initially called a calf injury.

A fifth-round pick out of Auburn, Sherwood was a regular contributor for the Jets in five games this season. He recorded 14 tackles over 139 snaps, and the Jets even trusted the neophyte to take on MIKE responsibilities with C.J. Mosley out on Sunday.

Now Sherwood won’t return until next season. Fortunately for the Jets, Wilson’s injury wasn’t as severe. The quarterback is expected to miss 2-4 weeks with a PCL sprain.
