2021 Senior Bowl: Film observations from day one

The first day of Senior Bowl practices is in the books. After watching all of the practice film, Mark Schofield has some observations.

Like everything else in the world, the Reese’s Senior Bowl is a bit different this year due to COVID-19. For the first time in six years I am not in attendance, but that does not mean we cannot evaluate the players who are participating. Thanks to Executive Director Jim Nagy and the rest of the Senior Bowl staff we have access to all of the practice film.

After a late night – and an early morning – of film-watching here are some observations from the first day of Senior Bowl practices. As Tuesday is more of a baseline day, these are not “winners and losers,” but more players that stood out and in some cases require more film study.

2021 Senior Bowl: 4 QB prospects for the Eagles to watch

Feleipe Franks among 4 QB prospects for the Eagles to watch at the 2021 Reese’s Senior Bowl

The Eagles have a new head coach and he’s assembling his staff, some of whom will definitely head to Mobile, Alabama for the start of the 2021 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Nick Sirianni will need to evaluate what he has in Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts, and with the Eagles fully believing in acquiring quarterbacks, here are four signal-callers to watch at the Senior Bowl.

Panthers 2021 mock draft: Scott Fitterer trades down in first round

In our newest seven-round 2021 mock draft Fitterer makes two trades, including a move down in round one.

On Thursday, the Carolina Panthers’ wide-ranging search for a new front office chief came to a fitting end. Scott Fitterer, a 20-year member of the Seattle Seahawks’ braintrust, was named the franchise’s latest general manager after agreeing to a five-year deal.

Fitterer, who began in Seattle as an area scout in 2001, has served as an integral part of one of the sport’s most successful franchises. His rise began in 2011, when he was promoted to director of college scouting, which would then be followed by bumps up to co-director of player personnel in 2015 and most recently, VP of football operations in 2020.

The first true test for Fitterer in his latest gig will come this spring, when he heads the war room for the first time in Carolina. If his time in Seattle is any indication, it will be a busy occasion. In our newest seven-round 2021 mock draft Fitterer makes two trades, including a move down in round one.

Panthers’ coaching staff will work with these 3 QB prospects at the Senior Bowl

According to organizer Jim Nagy, Matt Rhule’s staff will be coaching the “American” squad. Here are the three quarterback prospects they’ll be working with.

The first order of business for Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer should be charting a plan forward at quarterback. Starter Teddy Bridgewater ended the 2020 season on a disappointing note, finishing a downward trend with his worst performance of the year against the Saints in Week 17. In the second half, Bridgewater was benched for backup P.J. Walker, who didn’t play any better.

We know the team is looking for options at the position because they brought in free agent Dwayne Haskins for a visit earlier this week. He left without signing but it says something that they’d even kick the tires on Haskins given what we saw from him Week 16.

The Panthers may or may not draft a new potential franchise quarterback in this year’s draft. Either way, it doesn’t hurt to have all the intel you can get. That’s why it’s good news they’re one of the two teams who will be coaching in this year’s Senior Bowl.

According to organizer Jim Nagy, Matt Rhule’s staff will be coaching the “American” squad. Here are the three quarterback prospects they’ll be working with.

Kyle Trask, Florida: 6-foot-5, 240 pounds

Trask is the big name here and he’s considered one of the top QB prospects in this class. He can’t compete with the top four of Trevor Lawrence, Trey Lance, Zach Fields and Justin Fields but some people have him just outside that group. For what it’s worth, Pro Football Focus has Trask ranked just ahead of Alabama’s Mac Jones, who they mocked to Carolina at No. 8 recently. Trask boasts a huge frame and some impressive production during his college career. In 27 games he totaled 7,386 passing yards, 69 touchdowns, 15 interceptions and a 168.5 passer rating. He averaged 9.1 yards per attempt and completed 67.9% of his throws.

Kellen Mond, Texas A&M: 6-foot-3, 217 pounds

Mond’s college numbers aren’t as good as Trask’s, but he offers more experience as a four-year starter. In 46 games for the Aggies, he posted 9,661 passing yards, 71 touchdowns, 27 picks and a passer rating of 132.0. Mond only completed 59% of his passes though and averaged 7.1 yards per attempt. He’s also a rushing threat, having added another 1,609 yards and 22 touchdowns on the ground.

Jamie Newman, Georgia: 6-foot-4, 230 pounds

The third QB on Rhule’s roster will be Newman, who transferred to Georgia after three years at Wake Forest. Newman opted out of the 2020 season. Before that, he totaled 35 passing touchdowns, 16 interceptions and completed 60.5% of his throws while averaging 7.8 yards per attempt. He also scored 10 rushing touchdowns. Draft Wire has Newman ranked as the No. 8 quarterback prospect in this class.

Wait, WHAT? Jamie Newman invited to Senior Bowl as UGA player

The Wake Forest graduate transfer never took a snap for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Remember all of those illustrious games and numbers that Jamie Newman put together as a member of the Georgia Bulldogs? Remember him lighting it up between the hedges in the red and silver britches?

What, you don’t? Yeah, me either.

Someone needs to alert the Reese’s Senior Bowl of this as Newman has been invited to the game — and accepted — from the committee as a member of the Georgia Bulldogs.

Let’s just ignore the fact that he never took a snap as a Bulldog as he decided to opt out of the season after being a graduate transfer from Wake Forest.

Georgia still ranked above Notre Dame in latest Amway Coaches Poll

After a very uninspiring season opening win, the Georgia Bulldogs are still ranked over Notre Dame.

Maybe Jamie Newman knew something about how inept the Georgia offense would be this season when he opted out of the 2020 season. After trailing 7-5 at halftime to one of the worst teams in the SEC, Arkansas, the Bulldogs broke through and won “handily” 37-10.

The optics look good for Kirby Smart’s team, but it wasn’t like their quarterback, D’wan Mathis in his first career start, found his groove in the second half. It was Stetson Bennett, in his second go-around with his home state team that led the charge.

The score makes it read like the Razorbacks were punched in the mouth early and Georgia coasted to a win, obviously not the case. How Georgia was No. 4 over the Irish in the latest Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports will bother me at least until next week when the Week 6 edition is released.

Taking a look at other surprises include Miami jumping 6 spots to No. 8, Mississippi State and Pittsburgh going from unranked to ranked, and Oklahoma and LSU dropping 13 spots after upset losses.

Here is the latest poll, with the ACC teams in bold and last weeks ranking in parenthesis.

Georgia QB transfer Jamie Newman opting out of 2020 college football season

After transferring from Wake Forest to Georgia, quarterback Jamie Newman is opting out of the 2020 college football season

After transferring from Wake Forest to Georgia this offseason, quarterback Jamie Newman is changing course on his football journey yet again.

Newman is opting out of the 2020 college football season and will instead begin early preparations for the 2021 NFL Draft:

Newman was expected to battle with another transfer, former USC quarterback JT Daniels, for the Bulldogs’ starting job this fall. The SEC is still planning on playing a season in 2020, but Newman deciding to get a head start on getting ready for the next level instead.

Listed at 6-4, 230 pounds, Newman threw for 2,868 yards and 26 touchdowns for the Demon Deacons last season, with just 11 interceptions. He completed nearly 61 percent of his passes, adding 574 yards and six scores on the ground.

His early projections for next year’s draft are all over the place, with some predicting him to be in the first-round conversation, while others see him as more of a Day 3 pick. Without a 2020 season to put on film, NFL teams will face a unique challenge in terms of placing a value on his potential for the next level.

Jamie Newman explains why he’s opting out of the 2020 CFB season

Georgia football QB Jamie Newman releases statement explaining why he has decided to opt out of the 2020 CFB season.

Georgia quarterback Jamie Newman, who transferred to UGA from Wake Forest as a graduate senior this offseason, has opted out of the 2020 college football season.

Newman released a statement via Twitter just minutes after the news was spilled that he would be opting out.

“… due to the uncertainities of this year amid a global pandemic I will officially opt-out of this football season to prepare for the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft.” Newman said in his statement.

This was not the news that Georgia fans were expecting or hoped for.  The highly anticipated Jamie Newman era of UGA football has ended before it has even begun.

Georgia football loses experience, play-making ability with quarterback Jamie Newman’s decision to opt-out of the 2020 CFB season

UGA quarterback Jamie Newman has decided to opt-out of the 2020 CFB season. How does Georgia replace his experience? Analysis here.

Just when things may be looking normal soon with the 2020 SEC football season just weeks away, Georgia suffers a huge blow to their offense, which was already facing a rebuild of sorts.

Bulldogs quarterback Jamie Newman decides to opt-out of the 2020 college football season.

Now, not only will Georgia be unveiling a different scheme under new offensive coordinator Todd Monken while working to replace four starters on the offensive line, but coach Smart and staff will also have to groom a new signal caller out of an inexperienced quarterback room.

I certainly don’t blame Newman for making a decision that he feels will be best for him in the long run.

The NCAA has granted athletes the option to opt-out, remain on scholarship and return for another year – extending eligibility for kids who feel  playing with the risks involved amid the Covid-19 pandemic outweigh the few reasons to play.

Newman has been projected to be drafted as high as the first-round of next year’s draft.

He trails only Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State’s Justin Fields as the highest-graded returning quarterback in college football, according to Pro Football Focus.

Newman was also named as the No. 1 quarterback in touchdown’s versus the blitz by PFF.

In 2019, at Wake Forest, Newman threw for 2,686 yards with 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, while adding 574 yards on the ground with six rushing touchdowns.

Besides Newman’s play-making ability, experience is what the Bulldogs are losing – perhaps now the most glaring hole in Georgia’s 2020 offense.

USC transfer quarterback J.T. Daniels does have 2,672 yards and year under his belt at USC, but he will have to learn to make plays in high-pressure SEC games while proving himself to the Georgia lockeroom. And he still isn’t technically cleared to play yet – although he has practiced.

Redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis is coming off of brain surgery in 2019, but has returned to football activities. Former Georgia star quarterback Aaron Murray recently said Mathis was extremely impressive when he saw him at a practice in 2018.

The Bulldogs quarterback competition will now be at the forefront of everyone’s minds, especially with such big time games early in Georgia’s SEC-only schedule.

After going to Arkansas and facing Tennessee in Athens, Georgia will face Kentucky, Auburn, Alabama and Florida in consecutive games. An incredibly tough stretch for any team – especially one with an inexperienced signal caller.

Twitter reacts to Georgia quarterback Jamie Newman’s decision to opt-out of the 2020 CFB season

Here is how UGA Twitter reacted to the recent news of Georgia quarterback Jamie Newman’s decision to opt-out of the 2020 CFB season.

Wow, that stings. Georgia’s new heralded gunslinger Jamie Newman has decided to opt-out of the 2020 college football season and will be preparing for the 2021 NFL Draft.

Can’t say I don’t blame him for doing so, but that doesn’t make it any easier to swollow.

We were excited to say the least when Newman chose to finish his collegiate career at Georgia. And all we’ve heard this summer is about how Newman was one of the top returning quarterbacks in college football, so losing him just weeks before the opening is disheartening.

Here is how UGA Twitter reacted to the recent news:
