Saxon is facing charges of domestic battery in Indiana.

A day after it was reported that running backs coach James Saxon was facing charges of domestic battery in Indiana, the Arizona Cardinals have placed him on administrative leave.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters of the move and the team released a statement, via the official team site.

We are aware of the incident and notified the NFL as required. The matter is currently under review pursuant to league policies. After consultation with the league office, James has been placed on paid administrative leave. We will have no further comment pending additional proceedings.”

Arizona Cardinals place coach James Saxon on administrative leave

The Arizona Cardinals placed running backs coach James Saxon on leave following domestic battery charges.

The Arizona Cardinals announced on Friday that running backs coach James Saxon was placed on administrative leave after being charged with domestic battery stemming from an incident back in May. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury informed the media of the move during a Friday press conference, and the team also released a brief statement:

Saxon is facing two domestic battery charges from an incident that began at an Indianapolis-area Costco and then continued at a private residence. One of the charges Saxon faces is a Level 6 Felony for allegedly assaulting a woman in front of a child younger than 16 years old in Indianapolis on May 25th.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Saxon pushed the woman repeatedly in front of two children, causing her to fall into a garage door. The affidavit also alleges that Saxon yelled at the woman: “You got your gun? You might as well just shoot me now!”

Saxon allegedly repeatedly pushed a woman in front of her two children.

The Arizona Cardinals can’t seem to stay out of the news cycle. The latest news is about some more legal issues. Running backs coach James Saxon is facing two domestic battery charges in Indiana, reported ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss.

One is a Level 6 felony charge.

The Level 6 felony charge (the least serious in Indiana) comes with a sentence range of six months to a 2.5 years in prison and a potential fine of up to $10,000. The other charge, a Class A misdemeanor, has a sentencing range of up to a year in prison and a potential fine of up to $5,000.

He allegedly got into an argument with a woman at a Costco in the Indianapolis area on May 7. It continued at the woman’s home, where Saxon allegedly pushed her several times in front of her two children. One push caused her to fall into the garage door.

He was arrested in June and released on $2,000 bond. He was given a GPS monitoring device but it removed July 21 when the Cardinals rookies reported to training camp.

He has an attorney conference August 25 and a trial date can be set then.

Per Weinfuss, the team “is looking into the matter.”

RB James Conner ‘exactly what he’s advertised to be,’ says Cardinals RB coach

Arizona Cardinals RB coach James Saxon talked about what new RB James Conner brings to the team’s offense in 2021.

The Arizona Cardinals signed running back James Conner to a one-year, $1.75, fully guaranteed contract this offseason to round out the running back room. He and Chase Edmonds will make up the Cardinals’ 1-2 punch at the position.

Cardinals running backs coach James Saxon already knows Conner, having been his position coach in 2017-2018, Conner’s first two years in the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Saxon was a guest recently on the “Big Red Rage,” the team’s weekly radio show, and he spoke of Conner and the other running backs on the roster.

He is thrilled to coach Conner again.

“This guy is a pro,” he said. “There are no words I can use to describe how I feel about the kid. I’m extremely excited that he chose to be here with us. It’s going to be a good thing and it’s going to fun to watch.”

The exact role Conner will have this season is still to be determined but Saxon knows he can count on him to do whatever he is asked.

When asked if Conner is a three-down back, Saxon replied, “The guy’s capable of doing whatever you ask him to do.”

That said, there is one thing Conner will certainly be asked to do — run between the tackles. After all, he is 6-1 and 233 pounds. He is a big boy.

“He’s exactly what’s he’s advertised to be,” Saxon said. “He’s a downhill runner. There’s no B.S.”

Can he make an impact in the passing game the way Edmonds does?

Saxon thinks so, but downplays that part of Conner’s game.

“Oh yeah (he can catch), but I don’t think you want to ask an elephant to ride in a sailboat,” he said.

He and Edmonds both will have important roles in the offense.

Whatever that role is, Saxon is confident in what Conner brings to the table.

Javonte Williams, Michael Carter scouted by Cardinals at pro day

The Arizona Cardinals sent running backs coach James Saxon to check out North Carolina’s Javonte Williams and Michael Carter at their pro day.

The Arizona Cardinals could select a running back in next month’s NFL draft. There are a pair of talented prospects who played for North Carolina and they held their pro day. The Cardinals were in attendance but were clearly there for two players in particular — running backs Javonte Williams and Michael Carter.

How do we know?

That would be because, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, running backs coach James Saxon was in attendance.

Williams is a prospect largely seen as a guy who will be drafted in the second round but could land in the first round. Some make the case that he should be RB1 in this draft class.

Williams rushed for 1,140 yards on 7.3 yards per attempt and 19 touchdowns. he added 25 receptions for 305 yards and three more scores.

Carter, who was a senior in 2020, actually led the Tar Heels in rushing with 1,245 yards on 8.0 yards per rush. He scored nine touchdowns on the ground, adding 25 catches for 267 yards and two touchdowns.

The Cardinals have not yet addressed the running back room this offseason, leaving Chase Edmonds as the only back with NFL rushing attempts. As things stand, they are sure to draft a running back at some point.
