Michigan State football OL transfer James Ohonba commits to Louisiana

MSU OL transfer is heading to Louisiana

One of the outgoing transfers Michigan State football had was offensive lineman James Ohonba. Ohonba was a highly rated three-star in the 2018 recruiting class from Stockbridge, Georgia. He appeared in seven games throughout his career at Michigan State, only playing on special teams.

Coming out of high school, Ohonba held offers from the likes of Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and USC among others. Ohonba brought a lot of excitement to Michigan State but his development never ended up taking off, resulting in him transferring.

Ohonba has announced where he will be heading next, going to Lafayette, Louisiana to play for the University of Louisiana.

Check out how the transfer portal is shaking out for MSU in 2022

As many know, the transfer portal is set to be a huge part of Mel Tucker’s tenure at Michigan State. The new era of college football is centered around the use of the transfer portal. Tucker used the portal to flip a roster from a 2-5 season in his first year to an 11-2 season in year two, mainly in part to the additions through the transfer portal.

The transfer portal should be viewed as another form of recruiting, as a team will have two ‘recruiting classes’ per year, the traditional high school class and a transfer class.

Transfers do work both ways, while the team will add multiple players through the portal, losing players to the portal will also become a reality every season.

Take a look at how Michigan State’s 2022 transfer portal, both incoming and outgoing, looks like:

We have heard that this is likely to be another busy offseason for Michigan State football when it comes to the NCAA transfer portal. That trend continued on Friday, when MSU redshirt junior offensive lineman James Ohonba entered the portal.

Ohonba was a 3-star recruit at offensive guard when he joined the Spartans in 2018. He mainly played on special teams during his time with the program.
