Frank Herzog: The voice of Washington Champions

Frank Herzog was truly the voice of Washington champions. The next installment from our interview with the legendary Herzog.

Frank Herzog was not satisfied in 1975 with having landed the Washington Bullets PBP announcer position.

This is the third installment in our Commanders Wire feature on Washington broadcast legend Frank Herzog.

Part one.

Part two.

Herzog didn’t merely want the job; he wanted to do the job well. So, WTOP agreed to send Herzog to the NBA Officials Training Camp in Queens, NY at the Roberto Clemente State Park in the Bronx.

“I listened to the officials, asked questions about fouls and infractions, the charge call. I  listened and learned so that by the time I did my first Bullets game (the 1975-76 season opener), I felt like I was better prepared for it.”

The Bullets were a winning franchise; the only NBA team to make the playoffs every season during the 70s. They had even been to the NBA Finals twice, losing in 1970-71 and 1974-75. Frank had landed a great broadcasting opportunity.

Frank was working his third consecutive season as PBP announcer for the Bullets, (1977-78) when the team, for the third time in the decade, made the NBA Finals.

Washington and Seattle were tied at 3 games apiece, but the final game would be played in Seattle. The Bullets led the SuperSonics by 13 after three quarters. But when Washington all-star Elvin Hayes fouled out with 8:05 remaining, the Sonics, down 11, found life, whittling the Bullets lead down to 2 in the last minute.

Wes Unseld sank two free throws putting the Bullets up 4, and when the Sonics missed, Herzog’s understandably excited call in that magical moment was, “Unseld the long rebound. Shuffles to Dandridge. The Bullets are going to win! For the first time in 36 years, Washington DC has a major sports, World Champion!”

Frank had done NBA PBP for three seasons, the Bullets won the NBA championship, and Herzog couldn’t wait to get back for his fourth season.

Jim Snyder at WTOP TV 9 had different ideas when he approached Herzog about returning to WTOP TV9. Frank responded that the Bullets had just won it all. He was planning on returning for the next season.

To Herzog’s surprise, Snyder replied that yes, the Bullets had won it all, and yes, Frank had broadcast an NBA championship. However, now would be a good time for him to move to something else.

WTOP TV had hired Glenn Brenner, and Snyder was looking for someone to be Brenner’s reliable backup and the lead sports reporter for TV 9. He felt Herzog was the man for the job. “Jim Snyder was my guiding light; the most important force I ever had in broadcasting.”

In addition to backing up Brenner and reporting on the Bullets, Redskins, Caps and Terps, Herzog would still manage to do some PBP announcing on WTOP broadcasts of Maryland basketball. He worked some games with James Brown, some with Sonny Jurgensen.

“We were actually the first televised college basketball game in the history of the Air Force Academy. We had to lay down the cables and everything else.”

Just six months after broadcasting the Bullets NBA championship, Frank and his wife Sharon were attending the WTOP Christmas Party at the Shoreham Hotel in DC. Herzog learned that coincidentally that same night WMAL radio was holding their Christmas party in an adjoining ball room.

“I had met and knew some of the folks at WMAL. So, we went over there and I met and introduced my wife to WMAL GM Andy Ockershausen. I   simply mentioned that if anything would ever come open for the PBP announcer of the Redskins radio broadcast, I was interested and would love to come and interview.”

“Bam! Two months later, Dan Lovett suddenly retired from sports anchor at TV7 and as PBP announcer for the Redskins and moved out to California.”

“I went down to WMAL, knocked on Andy’s door, and asked if he remembered our conversation. He had. I interviewed for the job and was hired.”

Frank Herzog had become the voice of the champion Washington Bullets. In addition, he would be the next PBP announcer for the Washington Redskins.

North Carolina adds another blue chip recruit to class of 2024

On Monday, St. Rita (Chicago, Ill.) four-star center James Brown announced his commitment to North Carolina.

North Carolina has added a couple of blue chip recruits to the fold over the last several days. The nation’s top point guard in the 2024 class, Elliot Cadeau committed to the Tarheels on December 28. This week they added another big piece of the puzzle for the ’24 recruiting cycle.

On Monday, St. Rita (Chicago, Ill.) four-star center James Brown announced his commitment to North Carolina.

Brown (6-foot-9, 210 pounds) is ranked No. 5 among centers in his class and first overall in the state of Illinois.

In an exclusive for Inside Carolina, Brown explained his decision:

“North Carolina is a beautiful place, and when I took my official visit I was blown away by the Smith Center. In an interview, my dad called it “basketball heaven” and he wasn’t wrong. You walk in the building and look up at the banners, see all the history of UNC basketball, and it honestly tugs at you. It kind of invites you to be a part of it. And I know they talk about it a lot, but it really does feel like a family. There were former players there during the visit, players’ parents, friends, spouses, and everyone.”

Brown says he also received college offers from Arizona State, DePaul, Duke, Florida, Georgia, Harvard, Howard, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas State, Marquette, Michigan, Michigan State, Missouri, North Carolina, Northern Illinois, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Providence, Siena, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Western Illinois, and Wisconsin.

The scouting report on Brown from Eric Bossi at 247 Sports mentions an ability to finish around the rim with either hand, a variety of hook shots and up and under moves, plus good passing skills and decision making for a center.

In 13 games this season, Brown is averaging 10.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest while shooting 58% from the floor.

Five-star recruit is ‘excited’ to get to Chapel Hill

The UNC basketball program will host five-star recruit James Brown for an official visit and he’s excited to get on campus this month.

The next few months will be a crucial time for Hubert Davis in terms of recruiting future classes. The Tar Heels are set to host a handful of recruits for official visits in the 2024 class, one that has just one recruit committed.

Among the recruits heading to Chapel Hill for an official visit is five-star center [autotag]James Brown[/autotag].

The Chicago product is a Top 25 player in the 2024 class and is drawing interest from several big programs including both UNC and Duke. Brown is a recruit that Davis and his staff would love to add as a key piece to the 2024 class and it sounds like he’s excited to get on campus on October 14th.

Here is what Brown told StockRisers about his upcoming visits:

“North Carolina has a historic basketball program, I think it’s really cool what Hubert Davis was able to do in year one. I really enjoy talking with him and Coach Sean May and I’m excited to get down to Chapel Hill to learn more about North Carolina.”

Along with UNC and Duke, programs like Illinois, Missouri, and Michigan State among others are in pursuit of the talented big man. Brown is in the process of taking visits this Fall and a decision doesn’t appear to be coming any time soon.

Tar Heels make cut for four-star recruiting target in 2024 class

A key four-star UNC basketball recruiting target has cut his list down to 10 schools after landing 27 offers.

Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program have taken a step forward in the pursuit of a four-star center in the 2024 recruiting class.

Chicago native James Brown is a sought-after recruit that has racked up 27 offers so far in his recruitment. But on Friday night, the center made an important update to his recruitment and has trimmed that list down to just 10 teams.

Brown took to Twitter to announce he would be focusing on the following 10 programs: UNC, Duke, Buffalo, Missouri, Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Notre Dame, and Michigan State. The list was released by Brown as well as Tipton Edits:

The 6-foot-9, 210-pound center is a standout at St. Rita in Chicago where he ranks No. 27 overall, the No. 6 center and the No.1 player in the state of Illinois per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.

Brown will take a visit to UNC this Fall and right now, the Tar Heels appear to have a good shot in this recruitment. But they will have to battle out some tough programs such as Duke, Illinois and Michigan State in this recruitment.

Wisconsin basketball makes the top 10 for 2024 four-star C James Brown

Wisconsin MBB has made the top 10 for a four-star center from Illinois:

On Friday afternoon, 2024 four-star center James Brown out of Chicago, Illinois, announced his top 10 schools he’ll consider moving forward, a list that included the University of Wisconsin.

In addition to Wisconsin, Brown is still considering Duke, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Howard, and Eastern Michigan.

Per the 247Sports Composite, he’s the No. 27 overall prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, the No. 6 C in the country, and the No. 1 player in Illinois.

According to MaxPreps, the 6-foot-10, 210-pound big man averaged 11.7 points, 10.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 0.8 blocks per game as a sophomore for St. Rita High School in Chicago.

On film, Brown shows flashes of a player with immense upside. He’s a rim-running big man that can handle the ball, crash the glass, make plays around the rim, alter shots, and has a budding faceup game.

“I don’t know a lot about them [UW] to be honest. We visited there because they expressed interest in me towards the end of my high school season so we visited up there and I ended up getting an offer. So that’s a school I’m really excited to learn a little bit more about,” Brown said in an interview with On3Sports. I like Coach (Sharif) Chambliss and what he had to say about what they like to do, previews of game situations, and stuff like that. So I’m excited to learn a little more.”

The Illinois native announced his top 10 list via his Twitter account:
