Rich Eisen had this to say about watching Jameis Winston

See what NFL Network commentator Rich Eisen had to say about watching Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers trail the visiting Houston Texans today 17-10, and turnovers have been the issue all day for the Bucs. Quarterback Jameis Winston, who entered today’s matchup with a league-leading 24 interceptions, has already thrown three picks before halftime.

Winston is playing with a fracture in his thumb, but turnovers have been a problem for him throughout his career, injuries aside. Winston nearly had a fourth pass picked off, but Texans safety Justin Reid couldn’t secure it before it hit the ground. Still, the play made NFL Network commentator Rich Eisen say this about Winston:

“Literally every time the ball is thrown, I hold my breath.”

Eisen is saying what we are all thinking. Every time Winston drops back to throw, you have no idea what the outcome is going to be. It’s like a game of roulette every play.

The Bucs have already said they plan to bring Winston back next season. And, given that he’s playing today’s game without his top two receivers, it’s understandable if you want to cut Winston some slack.

Still, Eisen hit the nail on the head. We all hold our breath when Winston throws the ball. For better or worse.

These stats about Jameis Winston and interceptions should seal his fate with the Bucs

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston threw an interception on his first pass attempt against the Colts, and it’s a common issue.

Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: Jameis Winston threw an interception.

All right, that’s not exactly a stunner for fans to hear. In fact, it really isn’t an NFL Sunday until Winston throws a pick.

Today’s interception came on just the second play of the game and Winston’s first pass attempt. Colts linebacker Darius Leonard snagged the ball and three plays later Indy quarterback Jacoby Brissett capitalized by throwing a 46-yard touchdown pass to receiver Marcus Johnson.

The pick was Winston’s 21st of the season, which leads the NFL and is also a career-high for the fifth year quarterback. His penchant for throwing interceptions at such an alarming rate has many fans calling for his job, and the Bucs will ultimately have to decide when the season ends if it’s worth bringing him back, if only for one more year.

But, these stats regarding Winston and his interception problem could very well seal his fate with the Bucs.

Take a look.

Three times this season Winston has been picked off on the first pass of the game! That’s unheard of. Even if you said it was the third time in his career he’s been picked off on his first pass attempt, that would still feel like one too many.

At this point, Winston is what he is, which is to say a mediocre quarterback who can put up big numbers, but can’t cut back on the turnovers. He’s Jay Cutler 2.0, and you can’t really argue that.

The Bucs always seem to be playing catch-up because of Winston’s turnovers. The team has talent on offense, but needs a quarterback who can manage the game and protect the ball.

Winston, unfortunately, is not that guy. Time to move on.

Twitter destroys Jameis Winston after he throws an interception on the second play of game

See how Twitter reacted to Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston throwing an interception on the second play of the game.

Jameis Winston is using these last four games to make his case to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that he deserves a new contract, at least a one-year deal.

But, given that he entered Sunday with a league-leading 20 interceptions, it might be hard for the team to justify paying him to return, especially when you consider the Bucs have failed to make the playoffs in any of his five seasons.

And, given how the game started today against the Indianapolis Colts, Winston’s case for returning might be slipping away. On just the second play from scrimmage, Winston threw an interception while trying to get it to Mike Evans. The Colts took over and three plays later Indy quarterback Jacoby Brissett threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marcus Johnson.

See how Twitter reacted to Winston’s costly mistake (again).
