Penn State basketball dominates Delaware State in season opener

Penn State men’s basketball opens the Mike Rhoades era with a dominating win.

Penn State couldn’t have asked for a better start to their season and to get the Mike Rhoades era officially underway.

Facing a Delaware State squad who struggled mightily last season, this was a game that the Nittany Lions should have dominated based on the talent on their roster.

But winning the game 79-45 in the fashion they did was a statement that this new brand of basketball is here.

With just under three minutes into the game, Penn State led 5-4, getting off to a slow start. Then, they flipped the switch and went on a 21-2 run and held a 26-6 lead 13 minutes into the game.

After that extended run, the Nittany Lions never looked back. They went into halftime with a 39-18 lead.

The transfer players that came into the program during the offseason got much of the headlines, and for good reason, but it was the returners [autotag]Jameel Brown[/autotag] and [autotag]Kanye Clary[/autotag] who played a major role to start.

Brown was the leading scorer at half with 11 points and Clary added seven with two rebounds and an assist. Temple transfer [autotag]Zach Hicks[/autotag] showed off his shooting prowess by hitting three three-pointers before half.

In the second half, it was much of the same for Penn State. They maintained their huge lead and the game never got under single digits.

The Nittany Lions shot 49.1% from the field, efficiently carving up the Delaware State defense. They also shot the deep ball well, hitting 12 threes on 37.5% shooting.

Havoc will be the defensive philosophy under Rhoades and they were able to force 23 total turnovers and stole the ball 11 times. They also held Delaware State to 28.8% shooting and 1-16 from three.

Clary finished the game as the leading scorer with 22 points, while also pulling down seven rebounds. Brown was second with 20 and Hicks finished with 12.

The VCU transfers [autotag]Ace Baldwin[/autotag] and [autotag]Nick Kern[/autotag] struggled in their first game with Penn State, combining to go 2-10 from the floor for nine points.

[autotag]Qudus Wahab[/autotag], the 6’11” center, grabbed 13 rebounds and showed Penn State fans what it’s like to have legitimate size on the floor.

Yes, this game was against Delaware State, but it was still a great start for the Nittany Lions under their new coach.

Penn State men’s basketball 2023-24 roster

Here is a look at every player on Penn State men’s basketball roster for the first season under head coach Mike Rhoades.

Penn State will have a new look on the roster for the 2023-24 season. A new head coach and significant roster turnover, including losing two players to the NBA, have led to a roster with a number of transfer players plugging roster holes for the 2023-24 season.

Penn State’s roster includes a total of 10 players who have come from the transfer portal, with a number being added to the roster since the end of last season. That includes star guard Ace Baldwin Jr., one of the top players Rhoades had on his roster at VCU before moving to Penn State. Penn State also added transfers from North Carolina, Lafayette, Miami, and Temple this offseason.

Penn State basketball opens foreign tour with blowout victory in Bahamas

Penn State basketball scores blowout of Bahamas Pirates in foreign tour exhibition.

We may still be a couple of months away from the official start of the [autotag]Mike Rhoades[/autotag] era of Penn State basketball, but the new head coach of the Nittany Lions has technically opened his tenure with a blowout victory. Penn State opened a foreign tour in the Bahamas on Tuesday with a 113-65 victory over the Bahamas Pirates in the Baha Mar Hoops Summer League.

[autotag]Nick Kern Jr.[/autotag] was Penn State’s leading scorer with 17 points. [autotag]D’Marco Dunn[/autotag] added 16 points with three three-pointers made. [autotag]Kanye Clary[/autotag] scored 13 points and had a team-high seven assists with five rebounds. [autotag]Puff Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Jameel Brown[/autotag] also scored in double figures with 13 points each.

“Good first game,” Rhoades said after his team’s balanced performance. “A lot of guys contributed and we played a lot of different rotations and lineups. Great to see we had 26 assists, that means we’re playing the right way.”

Penn State’s defense also forced 33 turnovers by the Pirates. Penn State’s efficient offense had just 13 turnovers in the game.

Penn State’s next and final game in the Bahamas is scheduled for Thursday against the University of Victoria, from Canada. The University of Victoria dropped its first game in the Bahamas against the Big East’s Xavier, 80-68.

Ex-Penn State guard transfers to Ohio State

Penn State basketball lost a key player to a Big Ten rival by way of the transfer portal.

The good news had been rolling in for everyone involved regarding the Penn State basketball program. New head coach [autotag]Mike Rhoades[/autotag] had hit the transfer portal hard, getting some big names to join the Nittany Lions for the upcoming season. He was also able to convince [autotag]Kanye Clary[/autotag] and [autotag]Jameel Brown[/autotag] to stay with the program after the head coaching change.

There was hope that [autotag]Evan Mahaffey[/autotag] would be one of the players that would come back to Penn State after entering his name in the transfer portal around five weeks ago.

Unfortunately, that did not come to fruition.

Mahaffey committed to Big Ten foe Ohio State on Wednesday after one year in State College.

He was part of the 2022 class that was Penn State’s highest recruiting class ever and was able to see the floor in his freshman season. He appeared in 34 games for Penn State last year, averaging 9.4 minutes per game.

Mahaffey is an Ohio native who decided to leave the state despite being offered by two Ohio universities when coming out of high school. Mahaffey was a consensus three-star recruit who was the sixth-ranked player in the state and the 192nd-ranked player in the country.

This may seem eerily similar to some Penn State fans who saw former Nittany Lion guard, [autotag]Jamari Wheeler[/autotag], depart State College for Columbus in 2021, although, Wheeler did leave as a graduate transfer.

Mahaffey leaving is a bit of a blow to Penn State who sees one of their young rotation players leaving after one season. In the 9.4 minutes per game, he averaged 2.8 points and 1.1 rebounds but started to come on strong towards the end of the year. There was no doubt that he would have played major minutes his sophomore season for Penn State after the departures of the graduating seniors.

Ultimately, Mahaffey decided to go back to his home state and will now see his former school at least two times a year. Based on the reception that Wheeler received, the fans may have those games circled on their calendars.

Penn State basketball Big Ten conference opponents released

First look at Penn State’s conference opponents for the upcoming 2023-24 season

The basketball roster is starting to come together for the upcoming 2023-24 season. Head coach [autotag]Mike Rhoades[/autotag] has been busy hitting the transfer portal to boost the roster. Rhoades and his staff have now added five players from the portal and are still looking to add more. He was also able to convince sophomore [autotag]Kanye Clary[/autotag] to stay with the program and sophomore guard [autotag]Jameel Brown[/autotag] to come back to Penn State.

With the roster taking shape, some attention can now move forward this season. Penn State’s conference opponents were released, so they will know who and where each game will be played. The dates of when the games will be played have not been released, but fans now know who is on the conference schedule for the upcoming season.

The Big Ten splits the schedule into three classifications. There are games played against the same opponent in both home and road settings. There are also games that are only played at home and only others on the road.

Last year, it was a tale of two teams when playing at home and going on the road. The Nittany Lions finished with an impressive 13-4 home record and a poor 4-7 road record. The home record was boosted by some non-Big Ten games, so their conference record at true home games was 6-3.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the conference schedule for Penn State in the upcoming 2023-24 basketball season

Penn State basketball lands UNC transfer from portal

Penn State lands a UNC Tar Heel out of the transfer portal.

It’s been a busy time for new head coach [autotag]Mike Rhoades[/autotag] to fill out a roster that he can compete with for the upcoming 2022-23 season. He’s been going to work attacking the transfer portal and trying to get current Penn State players to stay in the program.

So far he’s passed that test with flying colors, getting a number of players to come to State College through the portal and convincing sophomores [autotag]Jameel Brown[/autotag] and [autotag]Kanye Clary[/autotag] to stay with the program.

Building using the transfer portal is something the basketball program has used to its advantage to get established players on the roster. Now, it’s being used to put piece together a team.

On Wednesday, Penn State received more good news when North Carolina transfer [autotag]Puff Johnson[/autotag] announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions.

Johnson is originally from Pennsylvania, playing his first three years of high school basketball in Moon Township for Moon Area High School. He played his senior season in Arizona for Hillcrest Prep and former NBA player Mike Bibby. Johnson is also the brother of former Pittsburgh and North Carolina player, Cameron Johnson, who now plays for the Brooklyn Nets.

Johnson was classified as a four-star recruit and was ranked 69th in the country in the 2020 class according to 247Sports. Despite being a Pennsylvania native and recruited by Penn State, he was never formally offered a scholarship by the Nittany Lions.

In his three seasons at North Carolina, Johnson appeared in 65 games starting only two. His career averages are 3.1 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.3 assists on 41.7% shooting in 11.4 minutes of playing time.

His profile suggests he has a lot more potential than he was able to showcase while in Chapel Hill. He is a 6’8″ wing who is considered to be a good shooter when he is able to take shots.

Johnson also has a connection to coach Rhoades when Rhoades recruited his brother Cameron while at Rice.

This is a big get for the Penn State basketball program. Pulling in a former North Carolina player with a known name like Johnson goes a long way toward the perception of the new regime.

Former Niagara basketball guard has Penn State in final 5

Penn State is in the mix for a key college basketball transfer from Niagara.

It’s been a busy time for Penn State athletics in recent weeks. The football program has been stealing the headlines with their major 2024 recruiting class that continues to grow. While that has been going on, the basketball program has slowly started to rebuild their roster under new head coach [autotag]Mike Rhoades[/autotag].

He was able to keep returning players [autotag]Kanye Clary[/autotag] and [autotag]Jameel Brown[/autotag] at Penn State after Brown decided to test the transfer waters. Rhoades brought two of his former players at VCU with him to State College as well. [autotag]Ace Baldwin[/autotag] and [autotag]Nick Kern[/autotag] officially signed with Penn State in mid-April. Temple transfer, [autotag]Zach Hicks[/autotag], announced his commitment to the Nittany Lions on April 20th.

Because so many of the players on last year’s roster were graduating seniors, there was going to be some semblance of a rebuild to get more players on the roster filled with their young returners. However, when many of those young players put their names into the transfer portal, it was looking like it would be a full rebuild under Rhoades.

Despite the players Penn State has already added, they’re not done trying to sign others. Niagara transfer guard Noah Thomasson has been a target of theirs since he put his name in the portal on April 3rd.

On Monday, Thomasson announced his top five schools and has included Penn State on the list. The other four programs are Georgia, St. John’s, Pittsburgh and San Francisco.

Thomasson is a 6’3″ guard who started his career at Houston Christian before transferring to a junior college for the 2020-2021 season. After leaving Butler Community College after one season, he landed back in Division 1 basketball at Niagara University of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

This past season, he averaged 19.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists on 48.1% shooting from the field. He started all 31 games he played and averaged 36.4 minutes on the floor during those games.

Thomasson has already visited both Georgia and San Francisco. He plans on visiting Penn State from April 28-29 according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports. [autotag]Jalen Pickett[/autotag] found major success at Penn State after transferring from Sienna of the MAAC.

Jameel Brown announces he’s staying at Penn State

Penn State basketball’s roster gets a boost with Jameel Brown withdrawing his name from the transfer portal

It’s been a busy few weeks surrounding the Penn State basketball program with [autotag]Mike Rhoades[/autotag] at the helm. His first priority was getting players onto the roster so that they could field a team, let alone a competitive one.

However, pieces started falling into place quickly when Rhoades was able to tap into his relationships with his former players at VCU. He was able get two of his VCU players committed to Penn State through the transfer portal, headlined by [autotag]Ace Baldwin[/autotag]. A few days ago, Rhoades was then able to keep current Penn State guard, [autotag]Kanye Clary[/autotag], in the program.

Rhoades was able to do that again, securing a commitment from [autotag]Jameel Brown[/autotag] who had previously entered the transfer portal after Micah Shrewsberry left for Notre Dame.

It was always a possibility that Brown would return back to Penn State. He’s a Pennsylvania native who played his high school basketball at Westtown, roughly three hours from State College.

He was a three-star recruit in the class of 2022, ranked as the 143rd-best player in the class and the fifth-best player in Pennsylvania according to 247Sports.

Brown is a 6’4″ combo guard who didn’t receive much playing time his freshman year. He appeared in 14 games, averaging 0.9 points and 1.0 rebounds per game. Because the roster was so senior laden last year, there weren’t a lot of minutes to give Brown.

He projects to being a really good defender at the college level. His length and size should allow him to guard positions one through three. That will make Brown and ideal fit for the defensive system that Rhoades likes to employ. Having long and athletic players is what worked for Rhoades at VCU and Brown has the body type to provide impact for this team.
