Best photos as Penn State basketball tops Indiana in the Bryce Jordan Center

Take a look at some of the best photos as Penn State completed a regular-season sweep of Indiana.

Penn State continued to frustrate Indiana on the basketball court on Saturday with an 83-74 victory in the Bryce Jordan Center. The win was a pivotal one for the Nittany Lions as they continue to fight to improve their seeding situation in the upcoming Big Ten men’s basketball tournament. The win was fueled by a balanced scoring effort from the entire starting lineup and led by Ace Baldwin Jr.’s 23 points and solid defensive efforts.

Penn State has now won four consecutive games against the Hoosiers, which is pretty remarkable given the two histories between the two programs overall and in head-to-head meetings over the years. After taking an earlier road game in Bloomington, Penn State has its first sweep of the Hoosier sin a regular season since 2009.

Here are some of the best photos from Saturday’s latest win against the Hoosiers.

Kanye Clary removed from Penn State men’s basketball roster

Penn State’s leading scorer Kanye Clary no longer part of the program

The up and down season for the Penn State men’s basketball programs after news was released that their leading scorer, [autotag]Kanye Clary[/autotag], was no longer part of the team after comments from head coach [autotag]Mike Rhoades[/autotag] on Monday.

“Kanye’s no longer with the team. Coach’s decision. We’re going to just keep moving forward with and focus on the guys we got, the task at hand,” Rhoades said at the Bryce Jordan Center.

This shocking turn of events comes after the sophomore guard didn’t make the trip to Nebraska on Saturday where the Nittany Lions lost 68-49. He is now no longer on their online roster after Rhoades’ comments.

Clary was one of the biggest surprises in the Big Ten this year, becoming one of the conference’s top scorers before an injury caused him to miss two games. He returned in a bench role for the next three games.

During his absence, Penn State won games over Rutgers and Indiana on the road. They also beat Iowa at home when Clary returned from injury but lost against Northwestern and Michigan State.

This announcement comes at a strange time in the season.

The Nittany Lions only have five more games remaining before the Big Ten tournament begins and will need a Cinderella type of run to get back into March Madness.

At the time of his dismissal, Clary was averaging 16.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.

“Next man up. Let’s continue to build this the right way, work really hard, keep putting it together,” Rhoades said.

Whether this is a direct shot at the sophomore guard is unknown, but it’s peculiar messaging after someone as talented at Clary was dismissed.

He was a holdover from Micah Shrewsberry’s first Penn State recruiting class after he decided to stay in Happy Valley upon the hiring of Rhoades. It seemed like things were working out early as he improved just about every aspect of his game from year one to year two.

Now, [autotag]Ace Baldwin[/autotag] will be the feature guard with [autotag]D’Marco Dunn[/autotag] and [autotag]Jameel Brown[/autotag] getting more playing time in the backcourt.

How this impacts the team will be seen, but it’s a shocking announcement at this point in the year.

Penn State basketball can’t keep pace in loss at Nebraska (photos)

Penn State men’s basketball falls to two games under .500 after its latest road loss at Nebraska.

Penn State saw yet another loss on the road in Big Ten play as they came up short at Nebraska, 68-49. [autotag]Zach Hicks[/autotag] led the Nittany Lions with 13 points on a tough afternoon for the Penn State offense. [autotag]Ace Baldwin Jr.[/autotag] was the only other player to score in double figures for Penn State with 10 points. Nebraska’s Keisei Tominaga led the Huskers with 17 points and hit timely shots to help stall any opportunity for momentum by Penn State. That included three three-pointers to help the Huskers pull away for the conference win.

Penn State basketball drops home game to Michigan State (photos)

Penn State was unable to come from behind against Michigan State at home on Wednesday evening.

Things did not go according to plan for Penn State men’s basketball on Wednesday evening. In a season where Penn State has been far more successful at home, the Nittany Lions dug a big hole in the first half against Michigan State and was unable to pull off a comeback in an 80-72 loss in the Bryce Jordan Center.

Michigan State’s Malik Hall scored a career-high 29 points and Penn State had a rough night shooting the ball. Each time Penn State seemed to have a run in them in the second half, Michigan State had an answer to pull away. [autotag]Ace Baldwin Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Zach Hicks[/autotag] each scored 15 points for the Nittany Lions and [autotag]Nick Kern Jr.[/autotag] added 14 points.

Penn State basketball’s winning streak snapped with tough loss at Northwestern

Nick Kern Jr. and Ace Baldwin Jr. combined for 35 points but it wasn’t enough to upset Northwestern.

Penn State men’s basketball was hoping to keep the good vibes going with a fourth straight win in Big Ten play on Sunday afternoon, but things did not go their way on the road at Northwestern. The 68-63 loss in Evanston dropped Penn State back to .500 with a record of 12-12 and to 6-7 in Big Ten play this season.

Northwestern attacked with a well-balanced scoring attack with five starters scoring in double figures including Boo Buie’s 15 points. Buie also added five rebounds and six assists for the Wildcats.

[autotag]Nick Kern Jr.[/autotag] led Penn State with 18 points and [autotag]Ace Baldwin Jr.[/autotag] added 17 points. [autotag]D’Marco Dunn[/autotag] got another start in place of [autotag]Kanye Clary[/autotag], who once again saw some playing time off the bench while getting back to full strength from an injury. Clary was held scoreless off the bench in 14 minutes and Dunn scored just four points.

Penn State will return home for their next game against Michigan State. The Nittany Lions host the Spartans in the Bryce Jordan Center on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Check out the best photos from Penn State men’s basketball victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes.

After scoring back-to-back road wins over the past week, Penn State men’s basketball returned home to host Iowa on Thursday night. The Nittany Lions made it three Big Ten wins in a row with an 89-79 victory over the Hawkeyes thanks in large part to a big game from Ace Baldwin Jr.

Baldwin Jr. led Penn State with 22 points. Penn State leading scorer Kanye Clary got back on the court for a few minutes off the bench after missing each of the last two games with an injury.

After being tied at 21-21 in the first half, Penn State went on a 14-4 run to pull away from Iowa, but the Haweyes battled back. Each time Penn State created some separation, Iowa dug in to catch up. But a 71-71 tie in the second half led to one more Penn State run to go up by double-digits to close out the home win in the Bryce Jordan Center.

Best photos from Penn State basketball’s road win at Rutgers

Check out the best photos from Penn State basketball’s first road win of the season from Wednesday night.

Penn State had been experiencing plenty of pain and suffering on the road this men’s college basketball season, but the Nittany Lions scrapped their way to a victory at Rutgers on Wednesday night. Penn State’s 61-46 victory at Rutgers was the first true road win of the season for the Nittany Lions. Prior to that, the only game Penn State had won away from State College was a matchup against Michigan in Philadelphia at The Palestra, where Penn State was officially playing a home-away-from-home game.

[autotag]Ace Baldwin Jr.[/autotag] rose to the occasion with 15 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 forced turnovers. Penn State needed that effort as they were without leading scorer [autotag]Kanye Clary[/autotag] due to injury. The defense forced 20 turnovers by Rutgers and [autotag]D’Marco Dunn[/autotag] filled in for the injured Clary with a 14-point effort in a starting role. [autotag]Quduus Wahab[/autotag] had 11 rebounds on the night as Penn State took care of the basketball.

Penn State basketball wins tough road test against Rutgers

Penn State picks up first road win of the season with a tough effort at Rutgers.

Heading into Penn State’s matchup against Rutgers, they knew they were down a man with [autotag]Kanye Clary[/autotag] not making the trip due to an injury he suffered against Minnesota in their last game.

His absence in the second half against the Golden Gophers was a major reason why they blew big halftime lead.

Traveling to face Rutgers is a hard task, even with one of their best players.

The Nittany Lions quickly got into a 6-0 hole to start the game after missing four shots in a row. From the start this had all the telltale signs that this was going to be a slugfest.

10 minutes into the game Rutgers had a 14-7 lead.

But seven was the most points they ever led by throughout the rest of the contest.

Penn State took their first lead with six-and-a-half minutes left in the half after [autotag]Ace Baldwin[/autotag] stole the ball and laid it in. The Nittany Lions didn’t trail the rest of the way once that shot went through the net.

What won them the game was their defense.

This has been a major issue for Penn State throughout the season, something that is the antithesis of [autotag]Mike Rhoades[/autotag] coached teams.

However, they forced 20 turnovers, had 13 steals, held Rutgers to 34% shooting from the field and 1-17 from three-point range. They also held the Scarlet Knights without a field goal for a roughly 16 minutes of game time.

The Nittany Lions extended their two point halftime lead and really dominated the second half to win 61-46.

Without his backcourt mate Clary, Baldwin was tremendous, finishing with 15 points on 5-11 shooting while adding seven assists, five rebounds and five steals.

After getting pulled early in the game for lack of intensity, [autotag]Qudus Wahab[/autotag] also put together a great game with nine points, 11 big rebounds and two blocks.

Stepping in for Clary, [autotag]D’Marco Dunn[/autotag] showcased what he can do, hitting two threes on 50% shooting from that range to help him get to 14 points while pulling down seven rebounds.

Winning on the road is difficult in Big Ten play and Penn State was able to walk out of this physical, gritty contest with a victory.

Hopefully this builds some confidence for their second consecutive road game this Saturday against Indiana.

Rutgers men’s basketball closes out January with loss to Penn State

Rutgers men’s basketball lost a brutal one at home on Wednesday.

On Wednesday night, January came to an end for Rutgers men’s basketball in a disappointing fashion. The Scarlet Knights welcomed Penn State to Jersey Mike’s Arena but collapsed in the second half during a 61-46 loss.

After the first half ended with Penn State leading 26-24, the Nittany Lions took over. Ace Baldwin Jr. led the way offensively with 15 points and seven assists. D’Marco Dunn also made an impact with 14 points. It marked the second time in January that Dunn scored more than ten points.

While Rutgers struggled offensively, they did get some encouraging performances from their freshmen. That includes Gavin Griffiths and Jamichael Davis. Griffiths led the team in scoring with 11 points and Davis added 10 of his own. They were the only Rutgers players who scored double digits.

In this matchup, Penn State dominated the boards. They scored 28 points in the paint and hauled in 40 rebounds. As a result, Penn State put the game out of reach in the second half.

As Rutgers turns their attention to February, they will happily leave January in the rearview mirror. Over the last month, Rutgers posted a 2-6 record, losing their last three games. With only 11 games left in the regular season, they will need to turn things around quickly.
