Report: More trade talks swirl with Jamal Adams, Jets at contract stalemate

The New York Jets and Jamal Adams are yet again at another impasse, as the All-Pro safety seeks a new deal.

The New York Jets and  Jamal Adams have hit another bump in the road as the All-Pro safety continues to seek a new deal.

According to longtime NFL writer Gary Myers, the Jets have given no indication that they will sign Adams to a long-term contract extension this offseason. Myers reports that New York would rather wait to make a deal, while Adams has grown impatient and wants an immediate resolution. As the friction builds up, a trade is still possible, per Myers, but New York doesn’t seem inclined to move the needle one way or another.

While Joe Douglas has sung Adams’ praises and indicated that the Jets would like to sign him to a long-term extension, actions speak a lot louder than words. The Jets picked up Adams’ fifth-year option, which means he is scheduled to make $3.5 million in 2020.

Adams’ growing displeasure could be seen when he elected to skip the team’s voluntary virtual offseason program. While the Jets brass has emphasized the word voluntary, it seemed like Adams was attempting to send a message to the front office.

The two sides will have to find a solution to this problem sooner than later. As Myers suggests. a trade could be what ends the contract stalemate. Unfortunately for New York, a team like the Dallas Cowboys is not going to part with significant draft compensation unless Adams is signed to a long-term deal.

The Jets have to take care of this ongoing Adams situation before it becomes a distraction. Extending Adams would be the cherry on top for Douglas’ first offseason at the helm of New York’s front office, but it doesn’t sound like a new deal is happening right away.

Jamal Adams appreciative of Joe Douglas’ ‘Jet for life’ comment

Jamal Adams was really appreciative of Joe Douglas saying he wants Adams to be a ‘Jet for life.’

Jamal Adams couldn’t be happier with Joe Douglas.

Adams appeared as a guest analyst during NFL Network’s coverage of the defensive back drills for the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on Sunday. There has been a lot of chatter at the combine about signing Adams to an extension and Douglas made it clear that he wants Adams to be a “Jet for life.” Adams was very appreciative of Douglas’ comments and said it should benefit him heading into next season.

“It feels good, man,” Adams said. “It gives me confidence going into next season, but, you know, we’ll see where everything ends.”

Fans should be encouraged to see these two seeing eye-to-eye after the fiasco prior to the trade deadline back in October. Douglas listened in on calls for Adams, much to the safety’s dismay. Adams then spent a few weeks avoiding the general manager.

As for Adams’ potential contract extension, there’s no rush to get it done. The Jets have him under team control for at least the next two seasons. But if the Jets want to avoid having any issues down the road, they’d be wise to accelerate the process to try to get it done as soon as possible.

The 24-year-old Adams put together another fabulous season for Gang Green, as he was named a first-team All-Pro member and made his second consecutive Pro Bowl. In 14 games, Adams had 61 total tackles, 6.5 sacks, seven pass breakups, one interception, one fumble recovery and two touchdowns.

With those numbers, Adams could potentially be the highest-paid player at his position once a deal gets done. If the two sides can come to a figure that satisfies both parties, then there’s no reason to believe Adams won’t be a “Jet for life.”

Joe Douglas wants Jamal Adams to be a ‘Jet for life’

Jets general manager Joe Douglas wants Jamal Adams to be a Jet for life.

Joe Douglas wants Jamal Adams to be a New York Jet forever.

Douglas spoke to the media at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday and was asked about where the Jets are at with Adams and a contract extension. Douglas said he has had preliminary talks with Adams’ agent, but wouldn’t get into specifics. But Douglas wants Adam in New York for the long-term.

“The plan is for Jamal to be a Jet for life,” Douglas told reporters.

Ever since Douglas discussed Adams in trade talks prior to the 2019 in-season deadline, the GM has made it known that he wants the safety to stay with the Jets. Prior to the trade deadline, teams called about Adams, only to discover Douglas was asking for an exorbitant return. However, Adams didn’t appreciate having his name discussed at all and he avoided Douglas and Adam Gase for a couple of weeks.

The trio has since cleared the air and seem to be on good terms. Adams has also expressed a desire to remain in New York.

The All-Pro safety had another fantastic season in 2019, as he made the Pro Bowl and was named a first team All-Pro member. Adams had 61 total tackles, 6.5 sacks, seven pass defenses, one interception, a fumble recovery and two touchdowns in 14 games.

As for Robby Anderson, Douglas said he will speak to his agent this week at the combine about potentially re-signing the receiver. He called Anderson a “dynamic wide receiver who can take the top off any defense.” What the GM is willing to pay for that skill set remains to be seen.

The Jets also stated that they have no plans to trade Le’Veon Bell and Douglas is looking forward to having him back next season.

Jamal Adams says he’s had extension talks with Jets: ‘I want to be in New York’

The Jets and All-Pro safety Jamal Adams are in the beginning stages of extending the 24-year-old.

Down in Miami for the Super Bowl LIV, Jamal Adams told the New York Post and Newsday that the Jets and his representatives have begun talks on a contract extension.

“They’ve talked about it, no numbers yet,” Adams said after making the rounds at Radio Row on Wednesday. “I’d be lying if I said I don’t expect to be extended. I do because of not for what I’ve just done on the field, but even off the field for what I’ve done for the organization. I’ve done everything they’ve asked me to do. I’ve done it at a high level each and every year. I’ve proven that I’m the best safety doing it right now.”

Adams confirmed on his Twitter account this afternoon that while the discussions have been small, he fully expects to be extended this offseason.

Adams’ short feud with Joe Douglas and the Jets front office seems to be a thing of the past. After listening to offers for the All-Pro safety before the 2019 trading deadline, New York is now in the beginning stages of extending the face of the franchise.

The 24-year-old Adams is eligible for a contract extension and the Jets seem willing to take advantage of that. With the uncertainty surrounding his future, the Jets seem prepared to keep him in green and white on a long-term basis.

“I’m not trying to be paid just to be the highest-paid whatever,” Adams said. “I’m trying to get paid for my status and what I’ve done. That’s what I’m about.”

Earlier this month, the Bears extended their All-Pro safety, Eddie Jackson, thus setting the market for the position’s elite. Chicago inked Jackson to a four-year, $58.4 million deal with up to $33 million guaranteed.

“I’m happy for him,” Adams said of Jackson’s extension. “I told him after the Pro Bowl he deserved it. Like I said, I’m not competing to be the highest-paid safety. I’m competing within myself to get what I’m worth, my status. That’s what I’m about.”

Adams just wants a fair contract. He’s not looking to make a record-breaking deal, but at the same time, he wants to be paid what he’s worth. A contract in the neighborhood of Jackson’s sounds about right.

As of now, Adams is set to earn $3.5 million in 2020.
