Prez Out: Jamal Adams says goodbye to Jets fans after 3 seasons in New York

Jamal Adams says goodbye to Jets fans after getting traded to the Seahawks.

Jamal Adams has said farewell to Jets fans after being traded to the Seattle Seahawks.

Adams, who was traded to Seattle on Saturday, took to Twitter to thank New York and Jets fans for all the love over the last three years. While tensions grew between him and the Jets this offseason, Adams said Gang Green’s faithful will always hold a special place in his heart.

The 24-year-old safety and a 2022 fourth-round pick were sent to Seattle in exchange for two first-round picks (2021 & 2022), a 2021 third-round pick and Bradley McDougald.

Adams looked well on his way to becoming an all-time Jet after he was picked sixth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. In just three seasons in New York, Adams was a two-time Pro Bowler and All-Pro. For his Jets career, Adams recorded 266 total tackles, 12 sacks, 25 pass defenses, two interceptions, six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and two touchdowns.

However, the relationship between Adams and the organization deteriorated to the point where the Jets felt it was time to move on. Adams was disgruntled with the team for not rewarding him with a contract extension even though Adams had two years left on his rookie contract.

Nonetheless, Jets GM Joe Douglas was able to land a monstrous package for a player who had become a vocal distraction. The Jets and their fans will undoubtedly miss Adams on the field, but the organization got an offer it couldn’t refuse and decided it was best to move on

The 49ers were one of eight teams on Adams’ wishlist of teams to be traded too. Adams also included the Ravens, Cowboys, Eagles, Buccaneers, Seahawks, Chiefs and Texans.

San Francisco can fit Adams into its budget. The 49ers have about $15.6 million in cap space left, which is plenty for Adams’ $3.5 million 2020 salary. Adding Adams to an already stacked defense could put the 49ers over the top after making the Super Bowl last season.

The Jets, though, have no intentions of trading Adams at the moment. They still want to try and work out an extension, just not right now. Adams still has two years left on his rookie contract with the potential of reaching four years with two franchise tags.

Adams has made it known that he wants out of New York. Based on his list of preferred teams, he wants to join a Super Bowl contender. He hasn’t done a whole lot of winning with the Jets, as they’ve gone 16-32 in Adams’ three years.

The Jets play the 49ers in Week 2 of the regular season at MetLife Stadium, but it would come as a surprise if Adams was lining up for the opposition in that game.

Report: Jamal Adams wants to be among NFL’s highest-paid defensive players

According to an ESPN report, Jets All-Pro safety Jamal Adams is seeking to be among the highest-paid dfesnive players in the NFL.

Jamal Adams’ future contract demands will be a big factor in any potential trade talks, even if the Jets All-Pro safety wouldn’t request an extension right away if he is traded to certain teams.

It’s believed that Adams is looking to be one of the highest-paid defensive players in the league, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Fowler reports that a team that has looked into acquiring Adams believes he is looking for such a deal, which would pay him well above $20 million per year.

Right now, the elite safety market is below $15 million. The highest-paid safety in the NFL is the Bears’ Eddie Jackson, who is making $14.6 million per season. It was clear after Adams’ All-Pro season that he would be commanding a contract in the neighborhood of Jackson’s extension while most likely surpassing the money per year. What wasn’t clear is that Adams wanted to be among the highest ocmpensated defenders in the league, including on his own team.

According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Adams was looking to outearn Jets LB C.J. Mosley, who is making $17 million per year. While Adams deserves to be paid, that price-tag doesn’t match up with his positional value.

Adams requested permission to seek a trade and has a list of teams — all playoff contenders — in mind. The problem? The Jets aren’t exactly looking to grant Adams’ trade request. The team has said it has every intention of extending him but with the current NFL economy, New York is looking for Adams to be patient. With Adams’ reported contract demands, it makes it that much harder for the Jets to trade him or even extend him, for that matter.

Jamal Adams adds Todd Bowles’ Bucs to list of preferred landing spots

Jamal Adams has added the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to his wishlist of teams to be traded too.

Jamal Adams is open to a reunion with his former head coach and current Buccaneers defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.

Adams has added Tampa Bay to his list of teams that he’d prefer to be traded too, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. Adams’ wishlist already included the San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs, Houston Texans and Seattle Seahawks.

Bowles coached Adams for the first two years of his career before the Jets moved on from Bowles after the 2018 season. The two have a very close relationship and Adams was vocal in his support for the coach following what ultimately became Bowles’ last game with the Jets in 2018.

The issue with a reunion is that the Bucs have less than $5 million in available cap space. So if Adams did end up in Tampa Bay, he wouldn’t be able to get an extension right away. However, there are certain teams Adams wouldn’t ask for an extension from upon arrival, according to the Dallas News’ Calvin Watkins. It is unknown if the Buccaneers could be one of those teams.

The Jets have made it clear that they do not intend to trade Adams and want him to be part of their future. Yet, the Jets feel now is not the time to pay Adams given that he has two years left on his rookie deal and up to four more years of team control. There’s also the possibility that the salary cap number takes a hit next offseason due to COVID-19.

Adams, however, wants his contract extension now. He has certainly out-performed his rookie deal with two Pro Bowl appearances and a first-team All-Pro selection. Adams is seeking to be the highest-paid safety in the league and possibly one of the highest-paid defensive players as well.

Ultimately, it’s up to general manager Joe Douglas. If Douglas trades Adams, he’s not going to get a bag of balls in return. So if Tampa Bay wants Adams, its going to have to pay a hefty price to get him.

Report: Jamal Adams wanted to be Jets’ highest-paid player

Jamal Adams wants to be the highest-paid player on the New York Jets.

Before Jamal Adams asked to be traded by the Jets, he was looking to be the team’s highest-paid player, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini.

It was clear that he wanted to surpass Bears safety Eddie Jackson as the highest-paid safety in the league at $14.6 million per year. But it also appears he was looking to out-earn teammate C.J. Mosley, who makes $17 million annually.

Adams asked the Jets for a trade on Thursday. Per ESPN, he has a list of seven teams that he prefers to be dealt to. The list includes six playoff teams from last season and his hometown Dallas Cowboys.

However, the Jets have no intention of trading their star safety at this time. General manager Joe Douglas has publicly stated that he wants to make Adams a “Jet for life”. But with two years left on Adams’ rookie deal and the salary cap possibly plummeting next offseason, the Jets feel no rush to sign Adams right away.

It’s a tricky situation between the two sides. Adams has established himself as one of the best safeties in the league and deserves to be paid like one. The Jets, however, still have many holes on the roster and are better off not making a long-term financial commitment just yet. That’s why Douglas has been handing out short-term deals this offseason.

Eventually, Adams is going to be paid top dollar whether it’s from the Jets or some other team. But for right now, unless the Jets give in and decide to pay Adams or honor his trade request, he’s set to make $3.5 million in 2020.

Report: Jamal Adams wouldn’t request extension right away if traded to certain teams

Jets All-Pro safety Jamal Adams wouldn’t request an extension right away if traded to certain teams, which includes the Cowboys.

Jets All-Pro safety Jamal Adams formally requested a trade from the team on Thursday afternoon.

Adams had been seeking a contract extension from the Jets and has grown increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress. However, there are certain teams that he is willing to be traded to that he wouldn’t immediately request a new deal from, according to Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins.

There is a list of seven teams that Adams would welcome a trade to, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Those seven teams are the Cowboys, Ravens, Texans, Chiefs, Eagles, 49ers and Seahawks. One thing those teams have in common? They all made the playoffs last season.

Adams’ willingness to be traded without the promise of a contract extension contrasts from the premise of his trade request. The Jets have made every indication that they want to extend him, including Joe Douglas’s comments about wanting to make Adams a “Jet for life.” However, the team is in no rush to ink a deal right now, as Adams is entering just his fourth NFL season.

The Jets can control Adams for up to four more seasons, so don’t expect the team to make any sort of move just yet.

Report: Jets have no intention of trading Jamal Adams

According to SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano, the Jets have no intention of trading All-Pro safety Jamal Adams anytime soon.

Contract negotiations between the Jets and Jamal Adams may not be going as smoothly as both sides would like, but that does not mean New York is preparing to ship away its All-Pro safety.

According to SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano, the Jets have no intention of trading Adams and are committed to making a long-term extension with him happen. The expectation is that New York and Adams will eventually come to terms on a contract that will make him a “Jet for life.”

Adams is entering the fourth year of his four-year, $22.2 million rookie contract and wants to get paid before his rookie deal expires. More specifically, all signs point to Adams wanting to get paid this offseason. Jets general manager Joe Douglas and CEO Christopher Johnson have maintained that they want to keep Adams in the Big Apple, but it appears the organization is not in a rush to do anything right away.

Douglas reached out to Adams’ representation shorty after the 2020 NFL Draft to open initial discussions regarding a contract extension. However, the Jets’ preference is to wait before extending Adams long-term.

New York’s reluctance to aggressively pursue an extension with Adams has led to rampant trade rumors throughout the last couple of weeks. According to Vacchiano, the Jets have not had any meaningful trade discussions involving Adams since October’s trade deadline, when the Cowboys and numerous other teams inquired about the 24-year-old’s availability.

Adams wants a contract that would make him the highest-paid safety in football. That means any deal would have to surpass Eddie Jackson’s $14.6 million per year salary. Timing, not money, is the reason why the two sides currently find themselves at an impasse.

The Jets want to wait to extend Adams, largely because they hold all of the leverage in contract negotiations. He is signed through 2021 and New York could use the franchise tag on him once, or even twice. With that kind of financial control working in their favor, it makes sense that the Jets want to save some money and wait as long as possible to extend the LSU product.

Adams is currently refusing to participate in the Jets’ virtual offseason program. Could a training camp holdout be in store once New York returns to its facilities? That remains to be seen. It doesn’t look like contract negotiations between the Jets and Adams are going anywhere anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be donning the Green and White next season.

In other words, don’t expect Adams to be anywhere but at One Jets Drive in 2020.

Report: More trade talks swirl with Jamal Adams, Jets at contract stalemate

The New York Jets and Jamal Adams are yet again at another impasse, as the All-Pro safety seeks a new deal.

The New York Jets and  Jamal Adams have hit another bump in the road as the All-Pro safety continues to seek a new deal.

According to longtime NFL writer Gary Myers, the Jets have given no indication that they will sign Adams to a long-term contract extension this offseason. Myers reports that New York would rather wait to make a deal, while Adams has grown impatient and wants an immediate resolution. As the friction builds up, a trade is still possible, per Myers, but New York doesn’t seem inclined to move the needle one way or another.

While Joe Douglas has sung Adams’ praises and indicated that the Jets would like to sign him to a long-term extension, actions speak a lot louder than words. The Jets picked up Adams’ fifth-year option, which means he is scheduled to make $3.5 million in 2020.

Adams’ growing displeasure could be seen when he elected to skip the team’s voluntary virtual offseason program. While the Jets brass has emphasized the word voluntary, it seemed like Adams was attempting to send a message to the front office.

The two sides will have to find a solution to this problem sooner than later. As Myers suggests. a trade could be what ends the contract stalemate. Unfortunately for New York, a team like the Dallas Cowboys is not going to part with significant draft compensation unless Adams is signed to a long-term deal.

The Jets have to take care of this ongoing Adams situation before it becomes a distraction. Extending Adams would be the cherry on top for Douglas’ first offseason at the helm of New York’s front office, but it doesn’t sound like a new deal is happening right away.

Joe Douglas steps up his praise for Jamal Adams on the radio

Despite stalling contract extension talks with Jamal Adams until after the draft, Joe Douglas went out of his way to praise the Jets safety.

Just in case any more damage control was needed, Joe Douglas went out of his way to praise Jamal Adams with the two sides expected to re-enter extension negotiations after the NFL draft.

Douglas appeared on the Bart and Hahn Show on ESPN NY 98.7 on Tuesday. There, the general manager said that the 24-year-old All-Pro safety was among the selling points that convinced Douglas to take the Jets job in the first place.

“He was a big reason I was excited about coming here,” Douglas said. “I feel this guy is a core player.”

While Douglas has said that he wants Adams to remain a “Jet for life,” extension talks have taken a backseat to the exec’s preparation for the first draft that he’ll be fully in charge of. With Adams set to skip the Jets’ voluntary virtual offseason program, Douglas plans on connecting with the safety after the draft.

Until then, Douglas is hoping to find more players with a similar mindset.

“The main goal that I’m trying to do right now is to surround him with like-minded players because we know Jamal is a dog,” Douglas said. “We have to surround him with guys that play as hard as he does, that love football as much as he does and can match his intensity.”

Jamal Adams to skip voluntary virtual offseason program

Jets safety Jamal Adams is not expected to participate in the NFL’s voluntary virtual offseason program.

The Jamal Adams drama that was put to bed during the regular season has awoken right before the 2020 NFL Draft.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Adams is not expected to participate in the NFL’s voluntary virtual offseason program next month. Schefter noted that the Jets haven’t expressed any official interest in extending Adams this offseason. ESPN’s Rich Cimini went on to say that the Jets and Adams had very preliminary talks before the NFL Combine in February. After that, however, general manager Joe Douglas said that the draft was a priority before extending Adams.

This latest news has opened up the possibility for Adams to be traded on draft night. The Jets have multiple holes on their roster and trading Adams would bring them back a ton of extra draft picks.

Douglas was taking calls on Adams right before the trade deadline last season, but he made the price too steep for any team to acquire him. That led to a feud between Douglas and Adams, but that was resolved a couple of weeks later.

At the combine, Douglas made it known that he wants Adams to be a “Jet for life.” However, as we’ve seen with free agency, Douglas is very conservative when it comes to how he hands out money. He sets a certain value on a player and doesn’t go past that number.

Adams, meanwhile, is looking to be one of, if not the, highest-paid safeties in the league. He’s been a Pro Bowler twice and was First-Team All-Pro this past season. He’s been a vocal leader for the Jets since his first day as a rookie. Douglas has said he wants to build a good culture with the Jets and Adams was trying to do the same before the general manager arrived.

The Jets have an interesting decision on their hands. They don’t have to give Adams his extension or trade him right now. They still have his fifth-year option for 2021 and they could always franchise tag him after that.

That scenario, however, could lead to Adams holding out from a lot more than just a virtual offseason program.
