Despite gruesome optics, Jamahal Hill avoids arm break in UFC 263 defeat: ‘This is part of the game’

The outcome wasn’t ideal, but Jamahal Hill avoided the worst.

UFC 263 didn’t play out the way [autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag] wanted, but he also avoided the worst-case scenario.

At UFC 263, Hill (8-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) was lost to [autotag]Paul Craig[/autotag] (15-4-1 MMA, 7-4-1 UFC) after he was caught in a nastily torqued triangle and pummeled with a variety of punches and elbows as his arm flopped around. The injury was graphic in nature and Hill’s arm stayed limp throughout the official decision and as he walked into the locker rooms.

Saturday, Hill’s management SuckerPunch Entertainment informed MMA Junkie that its fighter did not suffer a broken bone, but rather a severe dislocation. Shortly thereafter, UFC president Dana White confirmed as much on the pay-per-view broadcast.

Minutes prior, Hill released a statement on Twitter. Though he didn’t discuss the injury specifics himself, he expressed positivity and determination as he deals with a professional loss for the first time.

I’m ok!!! To the ppl that support me I love u all!! @PCraigmma thank u for the lesson I will be back and stronger because of it!!! This is part of the game an I will accept it and keep moving forward!!!”

UFC 263 took place Saturday at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona. The main card streamed on pay-per-view after prelims on ESPN/ESPN+.

UFC 263 results: Paul Craig snaps Jamahal Hill’s arm, pummels him until referee steps in

Jamahal Hill’s arm was flopping around as Paul Craig pummeled away.

A bad-blood matchup ended in a grotesque fashion, which left one fighter with a severely injured arm at UFC 263.

[autotag]Paul Craig[/autotag] and [autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag] finally got their hands on one another in Saturday’s pay-per-view main card opener. Craig (15-4-1 MMA, 7-4-1 UFC) stopped Hill (8-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) after he snapped the American’s arm in a triangle and pummeled him with strikes. The stoppage came at 1:59 of Round 1 and was deemed a TKO due to injury.

After a feeling-out process on the feet, the fight hit the mat when Craig pulled guard. Hill escaped a few submission attempts, he was unable to dodge the final triangle. Craig torqued the arm in a nasty direction the back in a normal one. The flopping arm, paired with a series of punches and elbows by Craig, got a big pop out of those in attendance – and ultimately referee Al Guinee stepped in.

The bad blood boiled over on numerous occasions in the lead-up to their fight in interviews and on social media. When the two fighters arrived at the host hotel for UFC 263 fight week, they had to be separated by security and staff.

With the win, Craig has not lost in his most recent five outings with four wins and a draw in that stretch. The victory over Hill is his third in a row and his 13th career win by submission.

Meanwhile, Hill suffers his first professional loss. UFC 263 was only his fourth promotional appearance since his debut in January 2020.

The event took place at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Ariz. It aired on ESPN following early prelims on ESPN+ and ahead of the main card on pay-per-view.

As a result, Craig said, the fight has been canceled.

Craig (14-4-1 MMA, 6-4-1 UFC) shared the news via his Instagram page and revealed that the pair have already agreed to rebook the fight, though “Bearjew” did not disclose the new bout date.

UFC on ESPN 19’s Jamahal Hill liked Jon Jones’ compliment, but hints not to get too friendly

Jamahal Hill appreciated Jon Jones’ shout out following his big win, but slyly let him know not to get too friendly.

[autotag]Jamahal Hill[/autotag] liked Jon Jones’ shout out, but that won’t change anything.

The rising prospect received praise from the former UFC light heavyweight champion and arguably the greatest fighter in MMA history after Hill stopped [autotag]Ovince Saint Preux[/autotag] in the co-main event of UFC on ESPN 19. The event went down on Saturday night at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

Hill (9-0 MMA, 2-0 UFC) defeated Saint Preux via TKO at the 3:37 mark of the second round.

Jones tweeted that he liked Hill’s style and said he “looked amazing,” among a few other comments. Hill definitely enjoyed getting a thumbs up from an all-time great but also warned Jones not to get too friendly.

“That’s appreciated,” Hill said speaking to reporters at the post-fight news conference. “I respect Jon regardless of anything anybody says about Jon. He’s great; he came in this game and dominated. He lit the way for a lot of people.

“It was that change of the guard from the well-rounded, be able to do everything, as opposed to just tough guys. So I appreciate that, but it don’t change the fact that one day – one day.”

[lawrence-related id=571766,571763]

With the win over Saint Preux, Hill remains undefeated in his MMA career. The 29-year-old is making plenty of noise at light heavyweight since joining the roster late last year following an impressive victory at Dana White’s Contender Series. It’s been a wild ride for Hill, to say the least.

“It’s been a dream come true,” Hill said. “I’ve been wanting to be here for a long time. I’ve worked hard to get here. On the Contender Series, after I got the finish, I was like, ‘All right, just keep it going.’

“Then fighting in Raleigh, I know I didn’t quite get the finish, but I had actually broke my hand a few days before the fight, so I was fighting with my hand injured, not the full power in my hand. Otherwise, I would’ve probably got the job done with a finish there. But it’s just been a roller coaster with the things I’ve had to deal with outside of the cage to the success inside the cage. I just appreciate it all; that’s my story. You have to be grateful for my story however it is, and I’m just ready for what’s next.”
