Eagles select Jalyx Hunt with the No. 94 overall pick

Howie Roseman is restocking the Eagles’ defense and landed an under the radar linebacker who started his collegiate career at the safety position.

After making multiple Day 2 trades, Philadelphia selected Houston Christian University Jalyx Hunt with the 94th pick.

A converted safety that transferred to Houston Christian from Cornell, Hunt stands 6-foot-4, 252 pounds, and runs a 4.64 40-yard dash.

With Brandon Graham retiring next off-season, and Josh Sweat a free agent, Hunt gives the Eagles athletic and versatile prospect.

Broncos host OLB Jalyx Hunt on pre-draft visit

The Broncos brought in Houston Christian pass rusher Jalyx Hunt for a pre-draft visit. He’s a late-round sleeper.

The Denver Broncos brought in Houston Christian edge defender Jalyx Hunt for a pre-draft visit earlier this month, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Hunt (6-4, 252 pounds) ran a 40-yard dash in 4.64 seconds at the NFL combine. His 10-foot, 8-inch broad jump was the best recorded among edge defenders at the combine.

Hunt started his college career as a safety at Cornell in 2019. Cornell did not play in 2020 due to COVID-19, but Hunt returned to play 10 games in 2021.

Hunt then transferred to Houston Christian ahead of the 2022 season and moved to defensive end. He had a breakout year in 2023, winning Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year honors after totaling 6.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and an interception returned for a touchdown.

Although he played defensive end from 2022-2023, Hunt would likely transition to outside linebacker if drafted by a team that runs a base 3-4 defense like the Broncos. He’s projected to be a late-round pick.

The 2024 NFL draft will be held in Detroit from April 25-27. We are tracking all of Denver’s pre-draft prospect visits on Broncos Wire.

Titans hosted Houston Christian EDGE Jalyx Hunt on pre-draft visit

The Titans reportedly hosted Houston Christian EDGE Jalyx Hunt on a pre-draft visit ahead of the 2024 NFL draft.

The Tennessee Titans are doing their homework on edge rushers ahead of the 2024 NFL draft, with the team reportedly bringing in Houston Christian edge rusher, Jalyx Hunt.

The news comes from Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com, who adds that Hunt has also visited the Houston Texans, New England Patriots, Denver Broncos and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Here’s more on Hunt, per Lance Zierlein of NFL.com:

Hunt is a small-school edge defender possessing notable athletic traits and the potential to get bigger and stronger. He currently lacks the lower-body anchor and general play strength to go up against NFL opponents, but the team drafting him is likely to view him as a developmental prospect in need of time to build his frame and his game. Hunt’s speed is obvious as a pass rusher and in run pursuit, but proving he can survive against a downhill running attack could be the difference between challenging for a rotational role or hoping to become a designated pass rusher.

The 6-foot-4, 252-pound edge rusher figures to be on the board when the Titans have their first pick on Day 3.

Tennessee could use more help on the edge after the departure of Denico Autry in free agency, and with the team not having much behind Harold Landry and Arden Key.

Houston Christian edge rusher Jalyx Hunt visits Houston Texans

Jalyx Hunt, one of the top breakout performers at the NFL combine, recently visited NRG Stadium.

Jalyx Hunt has been one of the biggest risers in the draft class since his stellar outing at the NFL combine last month. Now, multiple franchises are looking to find out more information on the Houston Christian pass-rusher.

One of those teams? The Houston Texans.

The Texans hosted Hunt for a pre-draft visit on Monday, according to KPRC2 Sports Aaron Wilson. Since Hunt played up the road for the Huskies, the meeting will not count against Houston as a top-30 visit.

Initially a defensive back at Cornell, Hunt transferred schools and positions to better his chances of going pro. In two seasons with HCU, he recorded 110 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, five forced fumbles and an interception.

Interest around Hunt peaking following a stellar outing at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., back in February. Scouts raved about his flexibility, violent hand usage and explosive first step, thus giving him the edge over tackles coming out of breaks.

“I am one of the big boys,” Hunt said in an interview with KPRC2 Houston. “I guess it did validate some things, not only for me but for some other people that I can play at the next level and I can play with the guys at the next level. I’ve always felt I had the ability to do so. I just knew what I needed to show and showcase.”

Hunt backed up his on-field highlights from Mobile with a combine outing to remember. Hunt finished with 4.64 40-time and posted the top broad jump among defensive linemen at 10-foot-9.

Hunt also posted a 37.5-inch vertical leap and totaled 19 reps on the bench press.

Houston is expecting a step forward from its front seven after totaling a franchise-high 46 sacks in 2023. Defensive Rookie of the Year Will Anderson Jr. should only build off his impressive first season. Meanwhile, Houston swung big to land four-time Pro Bowler Danielle Hunter from the Minnesota Vikings.

Hunter, who inked a two-year deal worth up to $51 million, is coming off a career season, when he led the league in tackles for loss (23.5) and finished with a team-leading 16.5 sacks. The Houston native is coming off back-to-back 10-plus sack seasons for the second time in his career.

Hunt likely would serve as the No. 4 or No. 5 pass-rusher depending on his performance in training camp. The Texans re-signed Derek Barnett to a one-year deal and drafted Dylan Horton out of TCU last season.

That doesn’t mean Hunt can’t be an essential part of the pass rush in a limited role. Teams are always looking to fortify the trench play in hopes of bettering their chances for a quick three-and-out.

As a Day 3 pick, Hunt should be one of the top-name Houston monitors. The Texans currently have nine picks in April’s draft, including a pair of fourth-round selections.

List of linebackers and edges at 2024 Senior Bowl

With the NFL as pass-happy as it is, pass-rushers are extremely valuable. Having a good week in Mobile can also help such players. Just ask the Jets. They have selected an edge that was at the Senior Bowl in the first round in each of the last two drafts — Jermaine Johnson, 2022; Will McDonald, 2023.

Could the Jets add another this year? Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will get a close eye on some of these players as the American team head coach. Not just Ulbrich, but linebackers coach Nathaniel Willingham as well, as he will be on the coaching staff. Joining Willingham is Imarjaye Albury of the Vikings, Rob Leonard of the Raiders and Cato June of the Colts.
