Eric Musselman and USC basketball land top-60 recruit Jalen Shelley

Eric Musselman brings in another recruit with a lot of upside.

The Muss Bus is picking up momentum. Eric Musselman and USC basketball have landed top-60 2024 recruit Jalen Shelley, filling another roster spot with a high-end talent. It’s true that USC has roster spots which need to be filled, but the Trojans needed to address those roster holes by getting legitimate upgrades and not merely settling for lower-tier players. Shelley gives USC a real chance to raise its ceiling. He provides Musselman with a level of dynamism and explosiveness which could help USC become a legitimate force at the offensive end of the floor.

Musselman’s remaking of the USC basketball roster, after the 2024 group scattered in the wake of Andy Enfield’s departure to SMU, has been substantial. One notable dimension of this transformation is that Musselman has looked to the mid-major ranks for seasoned transfers. Most college basketball analysts felt Muss needed a big-time recruit to add upside to the 2024-2025 roster. Shelley gives Musselman and USC a real opportunity to become something special. There is now a much better balance between portal pickups and incoming recruits on the USC basketball roster.

Down goes another one: Top-100 recruit Shelley asks for release from Arkansas letter of intent

Arkansas now down to three players for next year’s roster.

And they were down to three.

Jalen Shelley, a Top-100 recruit who had signed a letter of intent to play for Arkansas basketball next season, asked on Saturday for a release from that letter so he can re-open his recruitment.

Eric Musselman, the coach who recruited him to Arkansas, left the Razorbacks program to become USC’s head basketball coach earlier in the week. Arkansas has yet to tab a replacement, though reports had the Hogs zeroing in on McNeese State coach Will Wade after Ole Miss’ Chris Beard stated his intention to stay with the Rebels and Kansas State offered coach Jerome Tang an extension.

Shelley, who played his basketball two hours from campus in Branson, Mo., chose Arkansas over Texas, LSU, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Oklahoma State and others. He is a four-star recruit who is ranked as the 59th best player in the Class of 2024, per 247Sports.

Shelley’s exit, if granted (which is likely), would leave Arkansas with three players on the roster for next season. Forward Trevon Brazile and wing Tramon Mark have not yet announced their intentions and Shelley’s classmate, Isaiah Elohim, has not chosen the same course of action as Shelley. Yet.

Arkansas is coming off a 16-17 season, its worst 2009-10 when John Pelphrey was coach.

Despite Hogs’ lackluster season, national exposure helps recruiting

Coach Musselman says basketball recruiting still going strong, despite subpar season on the court.

Although the season has not gone as planned, Arkansas basketball coach Eric Musselman said the vibes of recruiting are still strong, particularly after ESPN GameDay hosted their popular weekly show from the confines of Bud Walton Arena on Saturday.

Although the Razorbacks (10-10, 1-6 SEC) lost for the sixth time in seven SEC games, with a 63-57 defeat at the hands of No. 6 Kentucky later in the day, Musselman said the recruits on hand Saturday were thrilled with the experience of the pre-game show, as well as the raucous environment during the game.

“We can’t comment on any particular recruits, so what I can say is that we have two recruits that are going to come to campus pretty soon,” he said during his weekly radio show, Eric Musselman Live, Monday night at Sassy’s Bar & Grille. “They were extremely excited, and their families were excited.”

Of course, he was referring to Arkansas signees Isaiah Elohim and Jalen Shelley, who were both nominated last week for the 2024 McDonald’s All-American Game. They were two of 44 nominees, nationally, who were vying for 24 spots to play in the April 2 game at Houston’s Toyota Center.

Elohim, a 6-foot-5 wing from Northridge (Calif.) Sierra Canyon, is the No. 41 ranked player in the class of ’24. He signed with Arkansas on Nov. 8, after choosing the Hogs over Kansas, Villanova, Kentucky, Duke and Arizona, among others.

He was was rated a 5-star recruit going into his junior season  – the No. 2 overall prospect and the No. 2 small forward – before a knee injury limited his playing time last season.

Shelley, a 6-foot-8 forward who plays up the road at Link Academy in Branson, Mo., is the No. 53 player, nationally, and projects as a stretch-4 or small forward. He also signed with the Hogs over Louisville, on Nov. 8, the first day of the national signing period.

There are also a handful of other prime recruits the Razorbacks are targeting, who also liked what they saw this past weekend.

“Just the general feedback of guys that are out there in the recruiting landscape, it was super, super positive,” Musselman said. “I can always kind of gauge the interest level or the exposure, based on how many text messages I get. Whether it’s after a game or whatever, and I can tell you that before noon on Saturday it was like we had won a big game, even before we played the game.

After three straight trips to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, which includes a pair of Elite 8 appearances, the fifth-year head coach has created quite a buzz for the program since arriving in 2019. Despite this lackluster season, the future still looks bright.

“That was based on the national exposure and how many people sent texts – people that I hadn’t heard from in years, were texting, at that time of day,” Musselman said. “A lot of people watched it. I think there were nothing but positives as you look into the future of what it can do for recruiting and stuff like that.”

After a stronger showing against the Wildcats, which included a lead at halftime, the Hogs are hoping to finally get off the schneid when they visit Missouri on Wednesday night. That game will tipoff at 7:30 on the SEC Network.

Arkansas hoops’ two freshmen next year looking toward McDonald’s All-American honors

Jalen Shelley and Isaiah Elohim may be McDonald’s All-Americans by the time they get to campus next year.

The Arkansas basketball team needs help.

If that help is to come via personnel, the Razorbacks could do a lot worse than Jalen Shelley and Isaiah Elohim.

The two signees in Arkansas’ recruiting Class of 2024 were nominated as McDonald’s All-Americans on Wednesday. They are two of 44 nominees nationally from which 24 will be selected.

Elohim, a 6-foot-5 wing from California, is the 41st-ranked player in the class.  He picked Arkansas over Kansas, Villanova, Kentucky, Duke and Arizona among others.

Shelley, who plays just up the road at Link Academy, is a bit bigger at 6-foot-8, but projects as a stretch-4 or small forward. He is the 53rd-ranked player in nation.

The Razorbacks had three McDonald’s All-Americans in last year’s class: guard Anthony Black, guard Nick Smith Jr. and wing Jordan Wing. All three went to the NBA after one season.

Arkansas basketball lands commitment from Top 40 prospect

Arkansas basketball has landed their second commitment of the 2024 recruiting class, and it’s a big get for Eric Musselman.

[autotag]Arkansas basketball[/autotag] has landed their second commitment of the 2024 recruiting class.

[autotag]Isaiah Elohim[/autotag], a consensus top 40 four-star recruit, committed to the Hogs on Thursday morning. The 6-5, 190-pound wing chose Arkansas over Kansas and Villanova.

Elohim is from Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, California and early on in the recruiting process was considered a top five prospect in the country. Injury issues caused him to fall in recent rankings, but he’s an extremely talented player and priority target for Arkansas basketball.

He has the frame and athleticism that typically translate really well from high school to college, and that [autotag]Eric Musselman[/autotag] has loved to target at Arkansas. Elohim is very aggressive when going downhill to the basket and has above average finishing ability. He will need to continue to work on his jumpshot and ball handling, but he’s shown flashes of being able to get to his spots on the floor and knock down tough shots.

Elohim is the second commitment for the Razorbacks in the 2024 recruiting class. He joins consensus four-star forward [autotag]Jalen Shelley[/autotag] as the other commit for next year.

Arkansas basketball lands Top 50 recruit Jalen Shelley

Eric Musselman and Arkansas basketball have their first commit of the 2024 recruiting class.

[autotag]Eric Musselman[/autotag] and [autotag]Arkansas basketball[/autotag] have their first commit for the 2024 recruiting class.

Four-star, Top 50 prospect [autotag]Jalen Shelley[/autotag] announced his commitment to the Hogs on Monday after taking an official visit to campus over the weekend. He’s the first pledge for the 2024 class and on of the top prospects from the state of Texas.

The 6-8 forward is currently playing for Link Academy in Branson, Missouri, which fans may recognize as the same place that former Razorback Jordan Walsh was recruited from. Like Walsh, Shelley is a long and lean wing who has great athleticism. He can guard multiple positions at the defensive end and is a major threat when he gets out in transition.

Shelley’s commitment is big for the 2024 class as Musselman continues his streak of adding high-level high school talent to complement his experienced returners and transfer classes.

Basketball team hosting 4-star target this weekend

4-star Jalen Shelley is officially visiting Fayetteville this weekend, and is an important target for Eric Musselman and his staff.

Jalen Shelley, a 4-star forward from Link Academy in Branson, Mo., is visiting Fayetteville this weekend.

The 6’9, 185-pounder took an unofficial visit last year for the Missouri State football game and is taking an official this time.

Shelley spent last year at Prestonwood Christian in Texas, helping them win the TAPPS (private school) 6A state championship.

Now he is in Branson, where Jordan Walsh spent his final year of school after transferring in from the DFW metroplex while committed to the Razorbacks.

He has taken official visits to Louisville already and also has ones planned for Colorado and Ohio State.

If he were to decide to commit, he would be the first of the 2024 high school class for Eric Musselman & Co, although they are in the mix for a handful of other targets.

Ohio State basketball makes cut for another top-50 prospect at center

We’ll know soon with a commitment date of August 13. #GoBucks

The Ohio State basketball team continues to make noise among recruits this offseason. Last week we told you about Jalen Shelley putting Ohio State in his top-five, and now another top-50 prospect has also included the Buckeyes on his shortlist.

Aiden Sherrell is the No. 6 center in the 2024 class according to 247Sports composite rankings. He stands at 6-foot, 10-inches, and hails from Norcross, Georgia, but currently lives in Napa, California where he attends Prolific Prep.

The scouting report from 247Sports Adam Finkelstein is very promising.

“Sherrell is one of the most naturally talented big men in the class with a versatile collection of tools,” says Finkelstein. “First, he’s an athletic big man who is approaching seven feet and yet is a fluid mover, runner, and explosive leaper. He can change ends, catch lobs well above the rim, hammer big dunks, and play above the rim on the defensive end. He also possesses some natural skill. He has a soft touch, not just around the rim but facing up. He can make some high released mid-range jumpers and can even make an occasional three, showing long-term potential to space the floor both vertically and to the arc.”

Joining Ohio State in Sherrell’s trimmed list are Alabama, Michigan State, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Along with Sherrell naming his finalists, the young man has also set a commitment date of August 13. The Bucks were the last to get a visit from the young man just over a month ago in June and are rumored to be in good position with the star center.

Ohio State basketball makes cut for top-50 prospect

Ohio State in good position with another top prospect. #GoBucks

With football season around the corner, all eyes are on the gridiron.

That doesn’t mean other sports aren’t working just as hard. Chris Holtmann has put together some solid recruiting classes in his tenure as the Ohio State head coach. Now he’s hoping to add another highly touted player, four-star small forward Jalen Shelley.

Shelley is a 6-foot, 8-inch wing hailing from Branson, Missouri. Ohio State was a little late to the game with the top-50 prospect offering a scholarship just last month. However, Shelley must like what he’s hearing about OSU because he just released his top eight schools and the Buckeyes have made the cut.

Joining Ohio State on the short list are Arkansas, Colorado, Houston, LSU, Louisville, Marquette and Texas A&M.

At this point, Ohio State has one commitment in the 2024 class, but it’s a good one. John Mobley Jr. attends Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, and is the No. 43 prospect in the class according to 247Sports composite.

After bringing in the No. 12 class last season and sending back-to-back freshmen to NBA via the first round of the draft, Holtmann looks to continue building on his recent recruiting success.
